Why won't my mac book pro recognize my external hard drive?

I'm having a battery issue with my computer, and need to bring it to the nearby Apple Store to have the battery looked at and possibly changed. I wanted to back up my computer in preparation for my visit, but for whatever reason, my Mac Book Pro is not recognizing my trusty LaCie external hard drive, a device I have used with this computer for two years now and performed countless backups with. I am not sure why this is happening. I have already tried restarting the computer multiple times, and unplugging and replugging the hard drive, both to no avail. Are there any ways I can get my computer to recognize my hard drive in order to perform the backup? Thanks.

Hi all -
I cannot view my flash drive OR my office server, which I should be able to connect to via VPN. VPN was installed on my Macbook Pro at my office on Friday. It worked fine. Now I bring it home, and I connect using VPN, and it shows that I am connected, yet the server hard drive icon does not appear on my desktop (as it usually did) and I can't see how to access the server at work.
I also cannot view flash drives when I plug them in - they just don't show up.
I had Norton installed; I read online I should disable that. I did this, and no luck. I also have already done all the things suggested on this post and have all the boxes checked, and yet, still cannot use a flash drive or access my work server.
I am stuck? Do I have to bring my Macbook pro in for service? I have NOT upgraded to Mavericks.

Simply start a new catalog:
File >> New Catalog
Choose a new name and save.
When the empty catalog launches you are ready to start over.

WHile you can do it that way, the next time you back up you'll end up copying the entire library again, and,as you'l see, once a library gets bigger that can take a considerable amount of time.
Try using an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

Set up your iTunes to utilize the music files on your external Hard Drive.
On iTunes pull down menu select Preferences.
Click on the advanced tab and set the iTunes Media Folder location to your External HD
Click on the File pull down menu and import the folder containing your music into iTunes.
Turn on Home Sharing on your computer - Click on the File pull down menu and click on Home Sharing.
Turn on Home Sharing on your other device(s)
On Music on iPad or iPhone, tap on the More tab and if you set things up right, you will see your Library name. Click on this and if things go as they should, it will connect to your library and you will see your albums, artists, playlists, sogs etc.

Hi. I have a 2007 MacBook Pro. I decided to reinstall the operating system and it failed. It got so far into the installation that it erased my hard drive. So I tried to boot it from the disk again but it just ejects it. I tried using the "C" key and that didn't work. I also tried holding down the "Option" key and selected the Mac OS Snow Leopard Install Disk, but it still just ejects it. I even tried to reset the PRAM and SMC, but it still didn't work. So how do I boot from the disk to reinstall the operating system on it?

Is this the original disc which came with the MBP? If not, that is likely the issue.
If it is the original disc, is it in good condition and clean?
If yes to both of the above questions, you may have a bad optical drive.
Were both the MBP and the optical drive working fine before this?

If you know the name of the photo, search for it using the name. If you don't and have Time Machine or other backup, locate the photo and you should be able to get the name.

Are the files you want to access stored on the Time Capsule as regular files or as part of a Time Machine backup? If they are regular files, first mount the TC disk:
