How does Calendar.setFirstDayOfWeek really work?

If you run the following program you get the same output from both calendars. Is that really how it should work or is it a bug?
import java.util.Calendar;
import java.util.GregorianCalendar;
public class CalendarTest {
public static void main(String[] args) {
Calendar europeanCalendar = new GregorianCalendar();
europeanCalendar.setFirstDayOfWeek(Calendar.MONDAY);
Calendar americanCalendar = new GregorianCalendar();
System.out.println(americanCalendar.get(Calendar.DAY_OF_WEEK));
System.out.println(europeanCalendar.get(Calendar.DAY_OF_WEEK));
}

Hmm, maybe. So the only way to actually use
setFirstDayOfWeek is via the getFirstDayOfWeek
method?
I was under the impression that
setFirstDayOfWeek(MONDAY) would re-number the day
constants (MONDAY, TUESDAY etc.) so that MONDAY would
have the value 1 instead of SUNDAY.Er, no. They're constants. They can't be renumbered. That's what the "final" in their declarations mean.
