How I managed to Bootcamp my Imac without internal CD

Problem: Bootcamp utility seemed ok, computer reboot but refuse to load the cd.
Instead I get white screen with "?". rEFlt did not help either.
In fact it refuse to boot from USB keys and I even put the win7 installation on my firewire disk (yes all of the above boot fine on pc:s). The only thing that would boot from external cd is the mac install disk.
Solution:
1. Run bootcamp and set the partition as you would like to have it. In my case I have replaced my superdrive for a 256gb SSD since I thought my imac would work perfect with an external cd instead.
I know, I am mad. Why would it just because the mac install cd worked like a charm?
When created the partition - exit bootcamp. Do not continue, reboot or anything. Just kill it.
2. Install Parallels Desktop 6 for mac trial. Its free for 10 days.
3. With Parallels, create a virtual machine, replace the harddisk in it with YOUR bootcamp disk.
Mount a win7 ISO or cd, does not matter which but ISO is about 20 times faster
4. Install win7 in your brand new virtual environment but after first step in the installation where it will reboot after unpacking the files - TURN OFF YOUR VIRTUAL MACHINE. You got 10 seconds to do that.
Failure to do so will mess up the install and you must start over.
5. Now, your win7 installation is ready except for a small problem - it is missing its MBR. Virtual machines are not allowed to write that to the disk so it writes it in a virtual file instead so IF you would boot it in parallels it would work but booting it "for real" will still not work.
6. Find your virtual machine file. Its most likely in documents/parallels directory. Choose "show package contents. In there you will find a file named after your harddrive. Choose "show package contents" on that as well and you will find a file called PhysicalMbr.hds. Copy that file to a USB stick.
7. Now we must write the MBR to our disk... This is simple however doing it wrong will end up badly for you
Open up Utilities and Disk Utility - Unmount your Bootcamp partition. Close Disk utility
Open up Utilities and Terminal
in Terminal please go to your usb stick (example: cd /Volumes/Usbkey (if its named Usbkey)
To find out what our disk is called type diskutil list
Your bootcamp disk will be shown in the list. For me it is /dev/disk1
to write your brand new MBR to the boot camp disk just type:
sudo dd if=PhysicalMbr.hds of=/dev/disk1 bs=512 count=1
Quadruple check that your bootcamp really is on /dev/disk1 before you do this.
If it fails (was ok for me but your boot camp may be locked etc) you can boot your mac install cd and do it from that terminal. That will bypass any locks but your able to really mess up your installation
You are now ready. Reboot your computer and be ready to press Option key really fast (or if you have refit you got 15 seconds) then just choose your boot camp partition. The win7 installation will continue without cd:s etc.
I would recommend installing refit since win7 will reboot a lot and its nice to have the extra 15 secs to choose partition.
Let me know if this was useful. It took me almost a day to overcome this problem.
I got Vmware fusion but it will not let me use a raw harddisk to work with so dont bother trying that. Use Parallels.
Again, the example above is with an 2009 Imac 27" with superdrive replaced with a 256gb SSD.
It may not work on your computer at all.
If you guys give me a mba or mbpro I will be happy to help out :P

I'm not sure if I should take a chance... Could you please explain step 4 a bit more detailed? Do I have to click on "reboot" (where?) and then within 10 seconds turn off the virtual machine? HOW would I do that? THANKS!

  • How to restore files to crashed iMac without Time Machine.

My iMac crashed and I am about to try and recover it with the Recovery partition.  A month ago a pet somehow knocked my Time Machine disk off my desk and I hadn't replaced it.  I have my files back up via BackBlaze as well, but don't know how I am going to incorporate (restore) those files in the proper places later.
Best practices or a utility is what I am looking for.
    Thanks,
    John

Reinstalling OS X is easy. But unless you have a restorable backup of your files there's little you can do to restore them. Read your BackBlaze documentation to find out how you restore a backup made with it.
Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

  • How to transfer files from an iMac without upgraded Migration Assistant to a new iMac that doesn't have a firewire port?

    Hello.
I just purchased a new iMac. He's awesome. However, he didn't come with a Firewire port. (Bummer, because I have one from the last time (2007) I had to transfer stuff from my iBook...)
When I turned him on, he wanted to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from the older iMac; she doesn't have the most updated Migration Assistant, though. (She works just fine, but she only has Snow Leopard.)
Okay, so what I'm wondering is if I just have to use a huge external hardrive to move everything? If I do that, will my programs (Microsoft Office) move? I fear they won't move/transfer that way. Ugh.
    PLEASE HELP.
    Ideas? Advice?
    Thank you in advance!

Firewire 800 (what the new iMac has) is 9 pin. FireWire 400 is 6 pin (what your old iMac has).  Hopefully you didn't damage your new iMac by trying to insert a FW400 cable into its FW800 connector. The numbers are important in the case of the ports. They don't interchange!!! Get the proper cable or risk damaging your new iMac.

  • Want to purchase new mac mini but I do not know how I would install programs from dvd without internal optical drive

I am planning to purchase new mac mini that just came out today but I do not know how I will be able to install programs or save stuff to disk when there is now internal optical drive.  I know I could purchase an external drive but is that necesary. Thanks.

If you have access to another Mac with an DVD drive you should be able to share it using Apple's drive sharing feature in the OS or at the very least if you have a firewire cable boot into firewire disk mode...

  • Satellite A25-S279: How to reinstall XP with Ghost DVD without internal drive

I have tosbhia satellite a25-s279 and the toshiba ghost dvd.
My internal dvd drive is broken (w/ some difficult, it can play some audio cd's some of the time. it doesn't recognize any cd-rom nor dvd). I also have external pioneer dvd writer dvr-s606 (connect to satellite via usb). I want to reinstall xp.
The Bios is 1.10, the chipset is ALi M1672 rev 0. You have option of booting off HDD, FDD, CD-ROM, and LAN.
I think you also have option of bootin off pc-card, but this is not in Bios.
It appears (from reading these forums) that my satellite does not support booting off the external drive, so i can't use the ghost disc?
I found another website suggesting make usb stick bootable and load xp from the memory stick.
However, reading these forums, it also appears that this is not possible w/ my satellite?
I guess I can buy a replacement internal dvd drive, but these seem extremely unreliable, and i already have functioning external drive.
any other advice would be appreciated.
    thanks.

    >It appears (from reading these forums) that my satellite does not support booting off the external drive, so i can't use the ghost disc?
That's correct. The external USB CD/DVD drive is not bootable and you will be not able to boot from the CD
    > I found another website suggesting make USB stick bootable and load Xp from the memory stick
No, its not possible to boot from the USB stick. BIOS does not support this boot option
I think the only way is to buy an internal supported drive and then to boot from the CD.
You could also try to boot from the LAN but this is not easy and you will need an RIS server.
I think this is not a really solution.

  • How do I install Bootcamp on 2nd internal iMac drive?

Have a new iMac with a 1TB internal HD in addition to the SSD startup drive.
Can I, and if so how do I, install Bootcamp on the 1TB internal HD? Will the Bootcamp Assistant point out the 2nd internal drive and proper location during the install process?
I purchased this iMac w/wireless keyboard, mouse, and trackpad...is that going to be a problem during the Windows install?
    Thanks,
    David

Bootcamp actually gave me an option to install on the 2nd internal iMac drive and it's working like a champ!
Thinking I was relegated to a Bootcamp partition on my SSD startup drive, I went ahead and delved into the Bootcamp install, only to find an option to install on either my SSD startup drive or my 2nd internal iMac drive. I simply chose the 2nd drive and lo, and behold, as I hold the Option button down on startup, both of my operating systems (OS X and Windows) available for selection.
Thanks for all the help, but it looks as though the latest edition of Bootcamp has addressed this issue, I am quite pleased.

  • Can i fax direct from iMac without buying a fax machine?

how do I fax from my imac without having to buy a separate fax machine

To send a fax, you need to have a fax modem (not found in any modern Mac or PC anymore) or to use an internet fax service like this.
    http://www.myfax.com/chp/
Or if you have a multy function printer/scanner/fax machine, you can scan a document and fax it.
Or you can buy a USB modem.

  • I am confused about how to manage photos between my iPhone, iMac and iPad.  How do I avoid using all the storage pace on my various devices?

How do I manage photos between my ipad, iphone and imac without using all the storage on the various devices?

If enabled, iCloud Photo Stream ensures all new photos are sent to all your devices. Then you can simply add the ones you want to each one's Library, and delete any photos you don't want.
One technique is to designate one device as the "master" containing all your photos - probably your iMac, since it is likely to have the greatest available storage - and make sure you have a backup strategy for it. That way, any photos you choose to keep on your iPad and iPhone are redundant copies that can be deleted as you wish, or as required should you need to restore your iOS device. If your iMac breaks and its Library irretrievably lost, the importance of its backup becomes critical. Therefore, consider having more than one backup, and more than one geographical location for them.

  • How I Managed to Install Windows 8.1 Pro on an iMac 27-inch, Late 2013

As is typical with many of my Boot Camp installs, this one did *not* goes as smoothly as planned. This installation was particularly troublesome, so I thought I would share how I managed to set up Boot Camp on a brand new iMac (27-inch, Late 2013) using a Windows 8.1 Pro DVD and an external Apple SuperDrive. These are the steps I took:
Download Boot Camp Support Software 5.1.5640 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1721)
Copy Boot Camp Support Software to empty MS-DOS (FAT)-formatted USB key
Run Boot Camp Assistant and select third option only (Install Windows 7 or later version)
Computer would reboot after Boot Camp Assistant finished but would boot back into Mac environment and not continue Windows installation
Boot computer holding down option key and select Windows (with DVD icon) and go through initial setup process (could go as  far as trying to format Boot Camp partition as NTFS and then got stuck)
Quit Windows installer and reboot computer holding down option key and select EFI Boot
    Run Windows installer
These same steps worked for another iMac (same model) that I set up later the same day.

Note: These types of discs or activities are not supported by DVD or CD sharing:
    DVD movies.
    Audio CDs.
Copy protected discs such as game discs.
Install discs for an operating system such as Microsoft Windows (for use with Boot Camp), or Mac OS X.
    Burn a CD or DVD

  • How do I install CS5 on new iMac without a disc drive, if remote installation isn't working?

I purchased CS5 for my laptop (Macbook Pro 2007 I believe) and now have the newest iMac without a disc drive.  I have tried remote installation, but it did not work.  I attempted to copy the installation files onto a USB and then transfer them, however, the iMac then prompts me to insert the installation cd.  How can I install it?  Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I was signed in with download assistant, no just in at adobe.com... I've tried different perferences and settings but when I click on the links nothing seems to happen. I've been messing around with this for a few hours now and it dawned on me that it may have something to do with my internet. I live outside the city- totally nice for gardening, totally terriable for internet thus I have a verizon data plan and not unlimited internet, I think possibly verizon is shutting it down because of restrictions I have on my data. This type of thing also happened when I upgraded to Mavericks. The file itself was larger than my month's data so it seemed like it wouldn't initiate the download... I don't know for sure if it is the same problem here but if you're telling me that you are having more successful results than I am that might be the reason.
I'll take my computer to work or to my mom's house or somewhere where I can have unlimited access and see if I have any better success.
Thanks so much for all your help!

Brick and mortar stores will not carry the disc, you can get it online on Apple's online store. If you are in the USA the link is:
