How keep URL in Dock without a webloc icon on the Desktop?

The instructions in the article cited below explain +how to put a URL in the Dock+.
For browsers which don't support simple 'drag and drop' it's noted that the URL can be dropped onto the Desktop and then dragged from there onto the Dock.
That works in, e.g., Firefox. However, when I then trash the Desktop icon the Dock item no longer works.
*How does one keep the URL in the Dock but remove it from the Desktop?*
Thanks.

Create a new Folder called URLs, drag that to the Doc between Applications and Trash.
Open that folder on the Desktop, now drag all your desired urls to that folder instead of the desktop.
Now, instead of clicking on the URL in the Dock, click on the URLs folder, hold a bit, you've got a popup menu of urls.
I see the value of what you're suggesting, but if I understand it correctly it's primarily a way of saving space while having access to multiple URLs from the Dock.
Doesn't it still require the user to keep that URLs folder on the Desktop?
What I was looking for was a way to have the URL (or folder of URLs) in the Dock without also having an icon for it on the Desktop.
