How much "snappier" is 2x23" compared to 2x30" ?

Regarding speed and "overall snappi-ness" of Aperture, running on a Macpro:
Theoretically, 2 x 30" is a total of 8.192.000 pixels in max solution, where as 2 x 23 is "only" 4.608.000.
The GPU will have to deliver 78% more pixels on 2x30s.
Will a 2 x 30" system be noticeable slower than 2 x 23" when working with RAW-images in Aperture?

I was given the understanding by Apple at PhotoPlus expo that you can expect a difference if both displays are hooked off one video card esp. if you process pretty big RAW's with plenty of adjustments.
One consideration is the VRAM. For 2 x monitors, given the same GPU, 512Mb is better than 256Mb, and 256Mb is better than 128Mb.
OS X doesn't support SLI, but the Apple guys suggested I try holding onto my old 6600 nVidia card and hooking one monitor off that (using it for the tools or non-imaging apps., like Safari, Word) and hang the other monitor off the new X1900. I can't test this for a couple of weeks (2nd monitor is a pressie!!!), but if I find anything out, I'll update the thread.

  • How much slower is wireless compared to wired?

how much slower is a wireless connection compared to a wired.  for like a regular desktop computer.  i know its probably slower but is it going to be something thats noticeable? or like slower but not noticeable most of the time.  also would using a wireless router & wireless adapter that are both 'ac' help with the speed.  the distance would be going from router on ground floor, to up one floor for the computer with adapter.
    thanks.

It depends on the maximum speed of the wireless/wired speed of the adapter and the router. The Gigabit Ethernet adapter with Gigabit router can reach 1 gig of file transfer speed. With internet speed, it is different story. Internet speed is dependent on the subscription of your service provider. For wireless AC network speed can reach up to 1.3 Gbps if you are using AC adapter in 5 ghz and 10 feet distance.  For wireless internet speed, the download speed can reach to 200 mbps and upload to 50mbps.

  • Why do I have to guess how much data I might use in a month when I select a plan?

When I sign up for water service, I don't guess that I might use 1,000 gallons a month, and then pay three times the going rate for water if I take a few extra showers. I get charged for how much water I use that month.
When I sign up for electricity service, I don't guess that I might use some set number of kilowatt hours, and then pay three times the going rate if we have a heat wave and I run my air conditioner for a few extra hours.
Why do I have to guess how much data I might use, and then spend three times the going rate if I stay up watching youtube videos for a few extra nights?
It is stressful to have to constantly monitor usage, and figure out ratios of how much I've used compared to how much time is left in the billing cycle to see if I need to curb my usage. It is not a good customer experience. I would prefer that data be charged a flat rate based on actual usage, perhaps with an option to throttle speeds at certain levels to prevent cases where a minor lapse in judgment could ruin my monthly budget, like forgetting to check data usage religiously on a device meant to simplify my life.
    Thank you for your consideration.

Simple answer is Verizon is offering a block of data for usage.
Where I live the water bill states my wife and I are being charged for 30,000 gallons per quarter/half and the price is say $60 however we never use any where near that amount. I send the meter reading in and it shows the amount we use. But the hamlet we are in has a set amount of gallons. Not fair but we live with it.
For your data outside of the unlimited which is not available any more to new customers you may be a light user and never go over the 2GB for $30 dollars a month. If you do you will pay through the nose for data. If you pay for more data say 4GB and I don't have the price for it so lets say its $70 then you don't have to watch as much for overage fees. But you are paying for the data in advance so as not go over and get hit with whopping fees.
It is just the way it is.

  • How much memory for the G5 2.7?

    I am buying a refurbished G5 2.7 from Apple.
The primary application will be Pro Tools HD2 for audio mixing.
    QUESTIONS:
    (1) How much memory will I likely need? 2GB? 4GB?
    (2) I will buy the memory from Crucial. Should I remove the original memory and use only the Crucial 1GB pairs, so they are matched?
    Powermac G5 2.7   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

No need to remove the original RAM.
How much to install depends on how you'll be using ProTools. If it's only audio (no sample players), 2GB would probably work perfectly. If you're using samplers heavily, with lots of large samples, you might want to go to 5-6GB.
I'd start with 4GB, RAM for these is cheap (compared to RAM for the Mac Pro.)

  • How much ram and processing power in my imac will meet my graphic design needs?

    Hi,
I'm in the market for a new imac. I'm trying to figure out how much ram I'll need and which processor will be sufficient for my graphic design needs.
I'm gonna need it to be robust enough to have InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator open at once along with spotify, safari with many tabs open, and a couple other apps including evernote and game from time to time. Also, I'm gonna be managing a good deal of fonts in font explorer. How much ram and processing power will I need in my imac to keep everything snappy with all these apps going at the same time?
Any advice on this would be much appreciated. Feel free to include any other relevant information you think I should know.
    Thanks, Nick

Computers are out of date when you open the box
Ok, getting serious, that iMac should be a viable workhorse for what you want for a good five years, and taht depends on how much ram you put in it, add really fast external storage, and so on.
Didn't throw this in earlier so as to not influence the discussion: my daughter is the senior art director, VP, at a graphics design firm in NYC.  Has been in the business for a number of years.  When she changed out her Mac at work, bought, or company bought, the 27" iMac model just before the latest, with maxed out CPU/GPU, and storage.  They maxed the memory to 32 GB for her, then added a 30" Apple cinema display so she has almost 5' of display in front of her.  There is nothing she cannot have open all spread across that display area.  She works almost exclusively in print media, occassionally condescends to do web stuff.  And has a massive array of RAID drives hanging on it.  But that is a setup an individual would be hard pressed to go with.
At home she uses a MacBook Pro with top cpu and display but that is all.
The point, just how massive do you want to go depends on how fast you have to work; in the office where time is money you need tons of horsepower.  At home, you scale it to your abilitty to juggle other tasks at the same time.
I think your choices have been great, the discussion has focused on what is important and especially what can and cannot be changed in the future.
Best of luck setting this up.

  • How much performance can I get from my macbook?

It's older then 2,5 years but still quite good for my needs. It has a 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo and I never use all the CPU, it has 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM and I use it all. I am not using all the 120 GB of 5400 rpm HDD but I use it often and I feel how much it is slow. Intel GMA950 is slow also, but it seems to be enough for me and is able to manage my external LCD at 1920x1200 resolution.
So I am thinking about two possible ways to have more performance:
    1. get a new macbook pro of 13" with 4GB RAM, newer disk (may be faster);
    2. upgrade my RAM, my Disk and may be my OS.
I know that I can use only 3.3 GB of RAM if I place 2 x 2GB 667MHz so-dimms: one more GB free could make difference for me.
About the disk, I know that my SATA is limited to 1.5 Gigabits but, using AJA System Test, I see that my internal drive is able to read and write about 29 MB/s, that seems to be even slower of my external 7200 drive that is using a Firewire 400 connection (39 MB/s).
It seems to me that newer HDDs on market, eg. Seagate Momentus.4 5400 rpm, are able to give much better transfer rate. My SATA should be able to manage transfer rates till 180MB/s so SATA II HDD should not suffer of it. Is it right?
Finally I could upgrade to Snow Leopard that should be a little bit faster then Leopard and with a completely new better finder.
    So my questions are:
    1. current 5400 HDD, like seagate Momentus.4, are really double or triple faster then my 2 years old hitachi? Even on my SATA controller?
    2. 667 MHz RAM compared to the new 1066MHz could be a bottleneck even at 3.3 GB?
    3. if I buy a new macbook pro, 2.53 GHz, 4GB RAM, 250GB HDD, how much performance difference will I notice between this new machine and mine with upgraded RAM, HDD & Os?
It's a difference of about 1.280$ (1.499$ - 220$), so I would be really pleased to listen what you think and know about this kind of upgrade.
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    Fabio.

Ok, I'll chime in with an opinion at least.
Wait on the new book. Do a $90 ram/$29 OS upgrade and give up on spending money on a HDD.
Ive been looking at upgrades to speed up my laptop till I can afford a new one and have decided to wait 12months till SSD prices drop to $1.75-$2.50/GB. I think I will windup with a faster computer than anything that will come out for another 12 more months. I love getting the latest and greatest, but since I wont be able to afford a whole new computer next year I will be happy with a much faster book.
I am using 65% of my upgraded ram(4/3.3whatever), never all of my cpu and only 35% of my drive space. Also happy with my external LCD monitor.
If this http://www.amazon.com/Intel-160GB-Mainstream-Retail-SSDSA2MH160G2R5/dp/B002IJA1E Q/ref=sr12?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1262409156&sr=8-2 hits $360 it will be a no brainer for me. The 'new computer' option will be right out the window.

  • How much time it take to rebuild an index for a table with 20 millions rows

    Hi all,
i need to rebuild the index of a table containing 20 000 000 row (i don't know why the other people working on this didn't think of rebuilding the index regularly, because i asked and apparently it has never been done  ) i am not a sql developper nor a DBA so i can't mesure how long it take to rebuild the index, does any one have an idea (aproximativly of course :aie:), the other question is there any formula to use in order to calculate how often to rebuild the indexes (i can for example retieve how much rows are delated or inserted daily ...)
    Thanks again
    Taha

    taha wrote:
:aie: that's why i am asking because i don't know (and to be sure which solution is best)
so the table is like this (the columns) :
45 varchar2, 5 timestamp, 30 Number no LOB columns, (15 indexes : 5 unique indexes and that those indexes uses at a maximum 4 columns)15 indexes - 100,000 deletes: this could mean 1,500,000 block visits to maintain index leaf blocks as the table rows are deleted. If you're unlucky this could turn into 1,500,000 physical block read requests; if you're lucky, or the system is well engineered this could be virtually no physical I/O. The difference in time could be huge. At any rate it is likely to be 1,500,000 redo entries at 250 - 300 bytes per entry for a total of about 400MB of redo (so how large are your redo logs and how many log switches are you going to cause).
yes the tables is used by an application so (update, insert ) can take place at any time
for the deletion , there is the batch which does a mass delete on the table ( 4 or 5 time each day)
You haven't answered the question - how long does it take to do a sample batch delete.
If you can enable SQL tracing, or take a before/after snapshot of v$sesstat or v$session_event for the session as it does the delete then you can get some idea of where the time is going - for all you know it might be spending most of its time waiting for a lock to do away.
    >
"How many leaf blocks are currently allocated to the index(es) ?" how can i answer to this question ? may be if i check the all_objects table ?
If you keep your statistics up to date then dba_indexes is a good place, cross-checked with dba_segments, and you can use the dbms_space package for more detail. I have a code sample on my blog which allows you to compare the current size of your indexes with the size they would be if rebuilt at some specific percentage: http://jonathanlewis.wordpress.com/index-sizing/ (It's such good code that Oracle Corp. has copied it into MOS note 989186.1)

  • Has anyone upgraded to MBP from Macbook..how much better is it?

I currently have a Macbook..1st generation Core Duo, I am very happy with it, has been relatively problem free apart from the RSS (Apple Service fixed this so no complaints). When I bought this it was supposed to be an interim measure that would do until I returned home to the UK after working abroad for a few years afterwhich I intended to then buy either an iMac or Mac Pro. I am doing a lot of video editing (hours and hours of DV tapes to get through!) and was hoping to use Final Cut Express. I have now just found out that I may be posted abroad again so I am now rethinking and considering a Macbook Pro. I really want a good upgrade from the Macbook as although it is a great little laptop for most things I feel that I need a lot more speed, better graphics and screen for the video work. How does a MBP compare to say an iMac, and how much of an improvement can I expect after the Macbook? It would not be impossible to have a desktop shipped to my next post but I am not sure I want to trust the movers not to break it and feel better taking a portable with me, but I have so been looking forward to getting a better spec'd Mac.
What to do...? Will I be happy with a MBP as an alternative to an iMac?

I've just done the same thing you're thinking about doing. I have a first gen Core Duo BlackBook. I absolutely love it. I was in the market for something with the Santa Rosa chipset and beefier graphics capabilities. I was looking at PC notebooks... but I couldn't find anything in the price range of the MacBook Pro that was similarly spec'd and with a similar form factor. The days of Apple notebooks being overpriced are long gone with their move to Intel. Unfortunately... many people still equate Apple products with being over priced. Anyway... I almost "settled" for an HP notebook that was about $500 less than the MacBook Pro. It didn't have nearly the MacBook Pros beautiful svelte form factor... it had an Intel Core 2 Duo 7300 (which is in the high end of PC notebooks sporting the Santa Rosa chipset), it had an integrated GPU (albeit the newer one that is part of the Santa Rosa chipset... better than the GMA950... but not as good as a dedicated solution... especially the bleeding edge nVidia GPU in the MacBook Pro)... I think I almost ordered the thing about a half dozen times but kept talking myself out of it. I finally decided to go with the MacBook Pro. It just seemed silly to go with a PC. With either a MacBook or a MacBook Pro... you're basically getting two computers for the price of one... a Mac and a PC. Getting a PC notebook seemed like a waste of money. I ended up getting the base model MacBook Pro. It was a little more expensive than I was looking to spend at about $2,000... but dollar for dollar, it was the best value out there. Using the Migration Assistant to move my data over from my MacBook was a snap (I was actually surprised at how well it worked). It's faster and cooler. The one issue I always had with my MacBook is that the fans revved up to pretty loud levels when the system was under a moderate load. The MacBook Pro runs nice and quiet... only revving up the fans when the load/temp gets to a level that I would consider it normal to do so. The keyboard is a matter of preference. I like the MacBook keyboard... and I like the MacBook Pro keyboard... I can't say I prefer one over the other. The backlit keys are kinda cool on the Pro... though I don't typically find myself using my computer in an environment dark enough to have the backlighting come on. Another thing with the BlackBook was the finish... those things attract fingerprints like no ones business. The aluminum case on the Pro is great... scratch resistant and not prone to showing fingerprints at all. I also don't worry about my MacBook as much as I used to now that I have my MacBook Pro. I feel comfortable with being a little more rough with it... and I don't worry about washing my hands right before using it each and every time to avoid getting prints on it. I love my MacBook... but I love my MacBook Pro even more. It basically eliminated everything that I had an issue with on my MacBool.

  • How do you determine how much ram is on your iPad?

I can't seem to find anything that shows how much ram my iPad has.
Also, similar to releasing or clearing cookies on my desktop, does the iPad also have this as something that needs to be cleared out occasionally?

Here is one app and there are others, mostly free, similar to it on itunes.
    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/activity-monitor-top-free/id445279837?mt=8
From an ipad forums post :
If you experience your iPad running a bit slow you probably have a ton of applications running in the background. The iPad’s memory is limited, so in order to avoid performance issues you can close background applications by following the steps below.
. To close background applications press the Home button twice and when the recently used apps bar appears, tap and hold down the app you wish to close.
You will notice that after a second or two of holding down the icon, all the icons in the recently used apps bar will begin to move from side to side. You will also notice that a small red circle with a minus sign will appear on the top-left corner of the icon. Tap the red circle to close the background applications. Once you’ve closed several applications tap on the Home button again and you will return to the Home Screen or App you were using. Your iPad should feel a little snappier.

  • How can I see how much data passes through my Time Capsule?

I am thinking of using a cellular data plan at home. My current, rural internet provider is slow and unreliable. I use a MiFi as a backup and have 4G service which is much faster and rarely goes down. I need to see how much data is downloaded and uploaded to compare costs. All our data passes through my Time Capsule.

A similar app to what Bob mentions is peakhour.. it works on any of the newer OS.
    https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/peakhour/id468946727?mt=12
It is a good app. BUT.. fat ugly BUTT.. just the same as Bob has explained, it depends on SNMP to work.. and so due to apple removing a very useful and functional protocol from its airport range you can no longer use it. Bizarre.
I strongly recommend a Netgear WNDR3800 (older model now but you can pick up one cheaply on ebay) and a 3rd party firmware called gargoyle. Apple delete my posts if I point you to it, so you will have to search yourself.
Replace your tall TC with the Netgear as the main router.. bridge the TC to it and you can continue to use its wireless and for TM backups. The advantage is that gargoyle will not only measure everyones usage, by IP, it is able to set a quota on everyone using the net and you can set that quota for hourly, daily or weekly or monthly. It will track the usage and you can see at a glance what everyone has used.
It is simple to load.. just like a standard firmware update. The interface is as clear as anyone can make it with such of lot of tools. And the actual router is powerful enough to provide excellent QoS and parental controls on top of measurements and quota.

  • How does a g4 tower compare to an ibook?

    Hello,
can anyone tell me how a G4 400mhz tower with loads of RAM compares to my G3 iBook with 374mb of RAM in terms of speed etc? Ive got the chance to buy a few of the G4s for not much money, but will only get them if theyre as good as / better than my laptop
    Thanks

    Hi
it's difficult to say as it partly depends on which applications you use, how demanding they are in terms of memory and whether they can take advantage of AltiVec etc.
In general terms laptops tend to be slower at a given processor speed due to the performance of other components such as the hard drive, where power consumption rather than speed is important.
The G4 towers are also more expandable and the processor, graphics card etc can all be upgraded. I guess whether it's actually worth doing this or just buying a higher spec tower to begin with though partly depends on how much they're being sold for.
Also two different G4 towers were available with 400MHz processors, the Yikes!/PCI G4 and the Sawtooth/AGP G4. The second is generally better.

  • How loud is Mac Pro compared to Mac mini G4?

I use a 1,25 Ghz Mac mini G4. At normal use it is almost inaudible. I would like to know, how much louder a Mac Pro is, compared to the mini.

I have both a G4 Mac mini (the "stealth" 1.5GHz model with 64MB VRAM) and the 2.66GHz Mac Pro. Under light load or when in idle the Mac mini makes much less noise than does the Mac Pro. However, the Mac mini fan can ramp up pretty loud when it has been under heavy load for more than a minute or two and in that case the mini is louder than anything I've yet heard from my Mac Pro. If you do little more than browse the internet, write emails, use Word/iWork, run iTunes, and/or watch a few low resolution movies then the Mac mini will be quieter. However, if you encode video, run extensive filters in Photoshop, or play 3D games then the Mac Pro will probably be quieter. This assumes, of course, that you have the passively cooled NVIDIA 7300 card and not one of the higher-end video cards which require their own fan to keep them cool.
Now the Intel-based Mac mini is a different story. I've used one of the dual-core Mac minis and it always seems to be quiet, so if you want near silence then one of the current Intel Mac minis is the way to go (IMO).

  • Has anyone noticed how much slower it is to import photos from iphone to iphoto

has anyone noticed how much slower it is to import photos from iphone to iphoto in Mac OS.?

How many photos do you have in your iPhoto library? As your library grows, it will take more time to load when the app launches.Personally, I have not noticed any slowdown.
And my question was meant to find out whether you import process had gotten slower than...a year ago, a month ago, compared to other photo apps? Running Mountain Lion..since you upgraded? In the end..what? Hence, I asked.
Try being clearer next time. That way we don't have to beat around the bush when trying to help you.
