I wonder how sql developer connects to a oracle database. does it use oracle client like Toad?
How does it make the connection with oracle server?

From Left side Tab click on (+) New Connection. Then at the window give a connection name,User name,Password.
Then provide Host Name, Port and SID
Click on Test button and then save or connect.

I'm new in oracle developer yesterday i setup in my laptop database 11g the last version (11.2.0.1.0), well i follow steps still i got succeed to install, and i got my local host URL and i test my user name and password work very well, my problem now is i try to connect database 11g using Oracle SQL Developer 3.0 (3.0.04.34) but always filed and with my little experience i don't know where the wrong. as i said i test database after finish install is work fine the my URL is https://Ahmed-HP:1158/em and i test my username and password that i already set before is enter normal in my local database, please i need help to know how i connect database with Oracle SQL Developer 3.0 (3.0.04.34).

because the message when i test connection always is filed and I'm sure i typing username and password and SID:orcl as i set when install database.port 1158 is what the dbcontrol (Oracle Enterprise Manager) is listening on. OEM is NOT the database. As far as the database is concerned, OEM is "just another client".
Actually, the database doesn't listen for requests on any port. There is another process, the "listener" that listens for requests to connect to the database. Typically, it listens on port 1521. I need to query an oracle database on a remote server and store the result back in DIAdem. Does anyone know how to telnet through diadem and return the result?

DIAdem provides you with tools to connect to databases using SQL. Specifically, you can use SQL_Connect to open a connection to a database through a DSN (Data Source Name). The DSN has to be configured on the local machine (Control Panel -> Administrative Tools - > Data Sources) and has to point to the remote Database. You can map a network drive in the local machine so you can browse to your remote Database. The DSN will provide the link between DIAdem and the remote Database.
If your communication has to be throught telnet, then I suggest you try to use an ActiveX control. VBScript doesn't support Telnet natively, but it does support ActiveX controls. You can create one from Visual Basic or try to find a telnet client that has one already.

Two user accounts are automatically created with the database:
SYS (default password: CHANGE_ON_INSTALL)
SYSTEM (default password: MANAGER)

Both these accounts are database adminstrators. You can use either of these to connect to your database and create more users.
To create new users use this SQL command after connecting to your database
SQL> CREATE USER <username> IDENTIFIED BY <password>
SQL> GRANT CREATE SESSION TO <username>

ADF mobile supports SOAP and REST services for business services access. This means that for you to work against an Oracle database, you need to create a business services that can be exposed as a service for WS DC consumption as explained in the ADF Mobile documentation. Your options are
1. EJB / JPA : Create entities from database table and then create a session facade on top. This then can be declaratively exposed as a WebService. Use the WSDL reference and start New --> WebService -> WS Data Control in your ADF Mobile project
2. ADF BC can be exposed as a Service Interface and this to ADF Mobile. To create an ADF BC service you can read the product documentation or this: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/issue-archive/2012/12-sep/o52adf-1735897.html

My OS is Linux and connects to internet successfully.
In order to run SQL statements. we need to use Oracle SQL Developer. I connect Oracle SQL Developer in the following way:
Connection Name: DB1 (this is my database name as well)
Username: SYS (this is the user name I used to login to the Console)
Password: SYS (this the password used to login to the Console)
Connection Type: Basic
Host Name: localhost
Port: 1158
SID: DB1 (this is created during installing the Database)
But the error message comes up: "Status: Failure - IO exception Connection Reset."
Can any folk tell me how to solve Oracle SQL Developer connection problem ?

password: enter_your_correct_password given at the time of oracle installation
role: select sysdba if you would connect as sysdba else select normal for users other than sys
hostname: enter your oracle server hostname or ip address eg:- 192.168.11.12
to find the hostname open terminal/command prompt in oracle installed machine
type ---> hostname
type ---->ping hostname
you can find the ipaddress of the server
port number: 1521 (default) ----> i guess , else check the port number in the tnsnames.ora file under your ORACLE_HOME/network/admin folder
SID: DB1

Howdy all.
Can/Will anybody tell me how to view the current connections to an Oracle database? I would like to be able to see what connections are happening, what username the connection is under, what the hostname is (the machine the connection is coming from), and also what SQL or PL/SQL is currenlty being executed (if any).

How to get connectivity between Personal Oracle 8.0.0.3 & Developer 2000 (Any Version

Can anybody tell me how to get connectivity between Personal Oracle 8.0.3 and Developer 2000 Rel 2.1 in Win 98 Environment.
I am able to install either Oracle 8 or Developer 2000 but not both, even if I use different Oracle Homes.
When I posted the same question to www.xperts.com someone wrote to me saying that a patch has to be used to get the connectivity.
I have been trying to solve the problem for last 6 months, but could not do it.
Can you please tell me how to get the connectivity or atleast tell me which version will facilitate connectivity in a stand alone PC.

For Windows98. Worked for me, but no guarantee it will solve your problem.
1) Install Dev2K.
2) Install PO8i in a separate Oracle home.

Our current solution to connecting to our oracle database uses the following code: ReportClientDocument clientDoc = new ReportClientDocument; java.sql.ResultSet rs = fetchResultSet(driverName, connectStr, userName, password, query); clientDoc.getDatabaseController().setDataSource(rs, tableName,tableName+"_ResultSet"); The code for subreports is very similar, but isn't necessary for my question. The problem w/ this approach is we have to define the SQL query and the table name in the JSP, which we shouldn't have to do considering both of these are stored in the report. Any changes to the reports' sql would then require someone to edit the jsp, which is just bad. I have been reading up on the ConnectionInfo and ConnectionInfos classes (nice naming convention btw) and the CrystalReportViewer.setDataBaseLogonInfos() method, and I believe a solution may lie here. The problem is the tutorials on using the ConnectionInfo class assume the database name is stored in the report, and we do not want to assume this. We are developing our reports to be used by our customers, who may name their database whatever they want so long as the tables inside it are what we specify. Because of this assumption, I have yet to find a good explanation of how to use the setAttributes(PropertyBag) method which is the only I have seen to specify the database name (within a connection string). I have examples of it, but nothing that defines the key/value pairs required in the PropertyBag to create a connection to an oracle database. Is there some documentation on the key/value pairs needed by the PropertyBag? Also, if there is another (easier) solution I am overlooking then please let me know, thanks.-Sam MorehouseHBF Group, Inc

asktom.oracle.com has an excellent article on writing a PL/SQL procedure that dumps data to an Excel spreadsheet-- search for 'Excel' and it'll come up.
You can also use your favorite connection protocol (ODBC, OLE DB, etc) to connect from Excel to Oracle and pull the data out that way.

SQL Developer version 1.2.1 is able to connect to 8.1.7 with limited functionality (prepared reports and browser for objects could not work)..
Next version (tested with 3.2 64-bit) of SQL developer could be "hacked" to connect to 8.1.7 by simply copy file C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\client_1\jdbc\lib\classes12.zip from Oracle client prior 11
into appropriate jdk\jre\lib\ext folder.
