How to access XML packages in Applet?

Hi all,
I am new to XML.
I just found, in any Java Applet program, if I include a declartion from Java XML packages, like this.
DocumentBuilderFactory factory = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
Java will comiple, but when I try to run that java applet, I got an error message like this:
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: javax/xml/parsers/DocumentBuilderFactory
at LogoBounce.init(LogoBounce.java:23)
at sun.applet.AppletPanel.run(AppletPanel.java:344)
at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:484)
I searched all the related posts in this forum and found two solutions.
1 One suggest to use
DocumentBuilderFactory factory = new com.sun.xml.parser.DocumentBuilderFactoryImpl();
but I suspect DocumentBuilderFactoryImpl() method is in old version Java XML. Because I can't find it in the lates API document.
2 Change the .Policy file
grant {
permission java.util.PropertyPermission "javax.xml.parsers.DocumentBuilderFactory", "read";
I tried this, but it dosen't work.
I am very sure my .jar file is installed correctly and my Classpath is correct. Because I can run sample examples provided by Sun. (they are all Appliction programs).
Can anyone give me a suggestion on this issue?
Thanks.

Say, doesn't this sound like the question in http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?thread=194313&forum=4&message=636602

• How to access XML elements by name in Extendscript??

I'm almost done the script that I've been working on, but something has been nagging me since I started. When I did start, I looked at the JS Tools Guide CS5 that comes with the extendscript ide to check how to access XML elements, children, attributes etc. It says this:
The XML object represents an XML element node in an XML tree. The topmost XML object for an XML file
represents the root node. It acts as a list, which contains additional XML objects for each element. These in
turn contain XML objects for their own member elements, and so on.
The child elements of an element tree are available as properties of the XML object for the parent. The
name of the property corresponds to the name of the element. Each property contains an array of XML
objects, each of which represents one element of the named type.
So basically it converts the XML into JSON. And you can access the properties like so:
<book category="COOKING">

The Boston Cooking-School Cookbook

<year>1896</year>
<price>49.99</price>
</book>
The Javascript statement bookstoreXML.book; returns the entire list of books.
The statement bookstoreXML.book[0]; returns the XML object for the first book.
The statement bookstoreXML.book[0].author; returns all authors of the first book.
A couple pages down it talks about Retrieving contained elements using children(), elements(), descendants().
So now I look through the XML Object properties and I see that I can use:
xmlObj.child (which) which A String, the element name, or a Number, a 0-based index into this node’s child array.
or
xmlObj.descendants ([name])
name Optional. A String, the element name to match. If not provided, matches all
elements.
or
xmlObj.elements (name);
name Optional. A String, the element name to match. If not provided, matches all
elements.
This is an excerpt of an XML I was working with:
<ROW xmlns="http://www.filemaker.com/fmpdsoresult"
MODID="16"
RECORDID="11128">
<Sign_Type>251.dr</Sign_Type>
<fm:Location xmlns:fm="http://www.filemaker.com/fmpdsoresult" xmlns="">5-5024</fm:Location>
<Line1>Zone
Floor
3
Patient Rooms
R532 - R436 even
Patient Rooms
R522 - R446 even
Xavier Elevators
Zone
Patient Rooms
R537 - 5757 odd
Main Elevators
Zone</Line1>
</ROW>
Extendscript will not give me an anything when I try to access elements by name. Instead I have to access by index, which works, but I'd rather search for names!
Actually the console log returns:
What am I doing wrong!?

First, those E4X XML objects are definitely no JSON (plain data) - they have a multitude of methods, even for tasks that would easily be implemented as property (e.g. the length() function), and they also bind xml element and attribute names onto the objects, allowing to target a multitude of XML nodes with a single statement. Or did you mean your script with that "it"?
Anyway, as you found out the ExtendScript XML object handles namespaces mostly by hiding them from you.
You could play around with global namespace settings, see the JavaScript tools guide.
You could also explicitly specify a namespace. This works for me:
$.writeln(myXML["fm:Location"]);
For simple use I had most success with a brute force approach that just strips the namespaces.
function removeAllNamespace(xml)
var ns =new Namespace();
var d=xml.descendants();
for (var i=0;i<d.length();i++)
d[i].setNamespace(ns);

• How to access remote database using applet

hi all,
I want to know how to access remote database using applet,
Please help me anybody.
Regards
Jesu

If the database is on a public server, you probably can't access it directly (security wise). You can make your applet talk to a server-side application, which makes the database calls on behalf of the applet. But even in an intranet environment this setup is often preferable, because you don't need to distribute a JDBC driver to all your clients.

• How to use DOMParser from an Applet / Or, how to parse XML from an Applet?

Hey,
As stating in the subject line, I wonder how to do it without getting an Access Denied error.
I would like to parse a XML file that has external DTD pointing to a SYSTEM location. Yes, I can change it to a public location. However, in either way, I have problems to use DOMBuilder to parse the xml file. The application always throws the security exception.
I tried to use the DOMParser from org.apache.xerces.parsers to parse the xml file. I set the DOMParser to ignore parsing the external DTD, and use the DOMParser.parse(InputSource) to parse the xml file from a giving URL. However, I get null of the result document.
Does anyone know how to parse the XML from an Applet? Or, does anyone know how to use the DOMParser from an Applet?
Thank you very much,

If the document resides on the local filesystem, you will need to sign a CAB or JAR for the applet to circumvent the sandbox's security restrictions. There are dozens of posts on how to do this. Basically, that will turn the applet into an application, from a Java security perspective.

• How to access XML files inside IDML?

Hi All,
How to access the different XML files like designmap, story, masterspread, etc. found inside the IDML files?
Pl. help.

An External Library DC is only intended to include jars. Using a Java DC may be a better idea, unless you put your xml files into a jar first (but you'd need a Java DC for that...).

• How to parse XML in an applet

Hi all,
I am using a webrowset that gets an xml file form the server. The webrowset object has to parse this file. I have serveral questions about this and how the web browser will use an xml parser in general.
1) I need to set a whole bunch of permission just to use the parser (read/write permissions) Why do I need to do this as I am not trying to access the local resources in any way.
2) I get the following error in ie6.
ReadXml : com.sun.parser.Resolver error
In the debugger, using appletviewer, I get "no value set for parser property"
I assume that the browser is having problems locating and using the parser but cannot figure out how to solve this. I am using the java plugin so I have access to the latest version on the jvm.
Any help appreciated!
Tia

Specify the jar file containing the parser in the archive attribute
of the applet tag.
<applet
archive = "xerces.jar"
>
</applet>

• How to access a file via Applet and JavaScript

I want to copy one file on the client machine from one place to another place from a Java Bean.
To do this I created an applet and a Java Bean as follows:
import java.applet.*;
public class FileUtils extends Applet {
public void copyFile(String src, String dest) {
private String source, destination; // setters/getters are there of course
public void copyFile(ActionEvent actionEvent) { // Bean
FacesContext fctx = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
ExtendedRenderKitService erks = Service.getRenderKitService(fctx, ExtendedRenderKitService.class);
String command = "var s = '"+ source +"'; var d ='" + destination +"'; " + " document.fileUtilsApplet.copyFile(s, d); ";
erks.addScript(fctx, command);
}Then I added the APPLET tag referencing the above class in the page fragment:
<f:verbatim>
<applet code="FileUtils.class" name="fileUtilsApplet" height="30"
archive="/context-root/Applet.jar"
width="200">
</applet>
</f:verbatim>From the Java console I can see the jar is successfully downloaded, but when the code in the bean is executed, the JavaScript code does not seem to do anything, as if the "copyFile" public method was not called at all and no output in the Java Console as well.
Note that I already followed the guidelines at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/adf/learnmore/71-adf-to-applet-communication-307672.pdf .
Do you have any ideas?

Ok, I can see the permission problem now:
java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.io.FilePermission c:\myfile.txt read)
at java.security.AccessControlContext.checkPermission(Unknown Source)
at java.security.AccessController.checkPermission(Unknown Source)
at java.lang.SecurityManager.checkPermission(Unknown Source)
at java.lang.SecurityManager.checkRead(Unknown Source)
at java.io.FileInputStream.<init>(Unknown Source)

signing the Jar and downloading the certificate permanently does not change anything in Firefox. The Java console keeps giving the above exception.
Any idea?

• How to access XML files on public part of an external library DC?

Hi,
I would like to put xml and xsd files into a public part of an external library DC, so that I can access these files within other DCs. But I don't know the path which I have to use in the other DCs, e.g. for creating a File object from such xml or xsd files. What do I have to do to get this running?
I'm using NetWeaver CE 7.2 for Java.

• How to access a file using Applet?

Dear all,
I would like to use an applet to read and display information on server side, but there still a fileaccess permission denied, what can i do?
The idea of the web service is like that::
1.User connected to a webpage, than they can choose the file and then,
2. the file name will be transfered into the applet (using applet> tags etc.)
3. THe applet read and displays information.
In addition, the file is placed at server side, should I set the "./hotjava/ properties "

Maybe you should sign your applet.
You'll find further information in the Signed Applets Forum:

• Access a file using applets

hello friends,
i'm trying to access a file using applets but i'm getting security error.
similar error for accessing the data base also so pls if you know help me how to access file/database using applets.

You need to use a signed applet and know where the file is and in an accessable area; signing an applet will not allow you to go on a "fishing expedition" through the file system.

• How can I access xml document from javascript whithin a JSP page

how can I access xml document from javascript whithin a JSP page?
I have a JSP that receives an XML document from a JavaBean, so I can access it within the entire JSP, but I need to access it from the javascript inside the JSP... and I have no idea how i can do this.
Thanks in advance!

The solution would only work on MS IE browsers, as other browsers do not support an XML DOM.
It can be done, but you would be stuck with using the Microsoft broswer. If that is acceptable, I have some example code, and a book recommendation.
