How to avoid seriously bad behaviour in 11g ODBC reading TIMESTAMP fields?

Hi everyone.
I thought that we'd got past all the TIMESTAMP related problems in the ODBC driver, but here is another one!
I have a problem which I'd like to share, hoping that someone has an idea why this happens... I have an expensive workaround, but maybe someone has a better idea.
It might also help any people who are looking for otherwise unexplained crashes (Microsoft Visual C++ just terminates a program without comment if the described behaviour happens to overwrite a buffer overrun marker on the stack, for example).
Using 11g ODBC driver, client and server 11.2.0.1 ...
with table definitions like...
create table X (A TIMESTAMP);
session settings like:
alter session set NLS_TIMESTAMP_FORMAT='RRRR-MM-DD HH24.MI.SS.FF6' NLS_DATE_FORMAT='RRRR-MM-DD HH24.MI.SS'";
and an application select statement like:
select A from X;
(Notice that "select CURRENT_TIMESTAMP from DUAL" does NOT exhibit this behaviour - it ignores the NLS_TIMESTAMP_FORMAT, that's another story).
An ODBC application with the following column bind
SQLCHAR chTS[27];
long cbTS;
odbcrc = SQLBindCol(hstmt, 1, SQL_C_CHAR, chTS, 27, &cbTS);
odbcrc = SQLExecute(hstmt);
odbcrc = SQLFetch(hstmt);
will ** OVERWRITE ** memory outside of the 27 character buffer.
Observed in a debugger and checked again using a structure with prefix and suffix fields around the the chTS field can prove that the OCI is actually writing the full 30 character (29 plus terminator) time stamp with 9 decimal place seconds value into the user provided (27 byte!) field and then truncating it to the requested 26 bytes.
We have a workaround in that a statement with "select to_char(A)" does not display this behaviour but it means that we need to replace all our (currently mostly database non-specific) SQL with Oracle specific SQL just to handle this. Anyone have a better idea?
I'd open a bug for this, but just at the moment I don't have access to our full support identifier, one of my colleagues has this and is not available. Whatever else it does, the ODBC driver should not write outside the provided buffer.

You need to specify the characterset in the CREATE TABLE statement. See this MOS Doc

    Andrew, sorry, but that's not correct. That was true with the iBook, but the MacBook and MacBook Pro are designed to be able to run with the screen closed. It takes a hack (used at the owner's risk) to keep the MB or MBP from sleeping when the lid is closed, but both systems are engineered such that once the lid is closed and the system goes to sleep, it can be then awakened and run if an external monitor, keyboard and mouse are connected. This is by design and fully supported by Apple. Of course the MB/MBP needs to be in a setting where it gets full cooling; on a solid surface, nothing blanketing the top and nothing blocking the rear vents.

  • How to avoid "The local variable ___ is never read" warnings

    If you create an instance of a class using something like:
    MyClass myClassInstance = new MyClass(param1, param2, ...);
    And everything you require this class to do is done from within it's constructor then you always get a warning saying "The local variable myClassInstance is never read" with the class you're making this initialization from.
    Is there a good practice technique to avoid these warnings?
    On a large project this type of warning can become numerous and it would be cleaner to avoid them.
    Thanks

    TimThe.., I disagree about the result of a bad design
    comment. In simple cases it can be beneficial to
    only require an object's constructor, then that
    object's actions are self contained and its methods
    can then be called from its own constructor. In the
    right situations this can help to loosen coupling
    between classes and increase encapsulation.I disagree with that. If your code depends on behaviour that is carried out by a constructor, you have a dependency on a concrete class, which is a nice quick way to tightly couple classes. You'd achieve looser coupling if the desired behaviour was inside a method, which was in turn declared on an interface

  • How to get the time difference (in seconds) between two timestamp fields?

    Hi All,
    I'm exploring validation expressions in SAP MDM Data Manager version 7.1.07.245
    I have two timestamp fields, suppose Update Date and Update-GDS.
    What I'm trying to do is prompt a warning when:
    (Update Date minus Update-GDS) is greater than or equal to zero seconds
    AND
    (Update Date minus Update-GDS) is less than or equal to 900 seconds
    the bottomline is, Update Date must be equal or greater than to Update-GDS but Update Date must not exceed 900 seconds difference.
    my initial try was:
    (Update Date - Update-GDS)>=0 s AND (Update Date - Update-GDS)<=900 s
    But it always returns true even the time difference between update date and update-gds is beyond the condition.
    Can you please guide me through this?
    Thank you very much in advance.
    Regards,
    ~erwin

    Hi Abhishek,
    I tried your code but it always returns true.
    It seems subtraction of timestamp fields do not actually get the time difference... (in seconds)
    Is this possible anyway? Or is there any other better approach on this?
    Thanks,
    ~erwin

  • How to Assign Customized BADI to Standard T.Code  Example ME51N

    Dear all,
    It would be really appriciate if you provide me a solutions.
    I have Created Customized BADI using SE18,SE19. But I am not aware How to Use those BADI in Standard Transaction.
    Example : I have Created PR Related BADI (ZPURREQ_ACC_CHK). How to utilize this BADI In ME51N,ME52N.
    Please advice me.
    Thanks
    Best Regards,
    KSK

    I think what you need to do is find what exits or existing BAdIs are available for the transaction.  Then in the user exit you can call your customized code.  That way you avoid changing SAP's code for the transaction.  You can find BAdIs related to purchasing by going to transaction SPRO and then following this path:
    Materials Management -> Purchasing -> Business Add-Ins for Purchasing
    I hope this helps.

  • How to avoid Moire Effects (jiggered still pictures) using iM and iDVD.

    This is a discussion going on forever and forever in this forum. I had the problem of bad looking slideshows myself, and I am hearing the same tips over and over again that just don't work. This is what I found out on how to avoid moire effects in your still images, when you want to edit a slideshow using iMovie - and I personally think, this explanation makes a lot of sense.
    Try it on your own and you will have had the last bad looking still image slidehow on the TV screen ever!! Here we go:
    Like everybody here I am talking about the process of creating a slideshow incuding movie strips in iMovie to get as a final result a DVD with menus and such using iDVD.
    And the common problem with stills and iMovie 5.02 are the so called jiggered pictures iMovie creates. Call it a moire effect, if you'd like.
    Whenever full resolution still images are importet from iPhoto into iMovie, the quality that iMovie will spit out in the end is disgusting. Period. Just disgusting.
    It has nothing to do with that iMovie does not display it properly on the Monitor or we are just in preview mode - the results are bad there and will be bad (maybe even worse) on the TV screen.
    There is no SIGNIFICANT difference between wether the pictures are imported with KB on or off, whether they are imported as still frames or as video clips using iMovie "import" function. iMovie can treat the color fairly bad, overprocesses the pictures and - worst of all, the moiree effects you will see in the endresult are just very very bad. It is worse when the pictures are panning a lot (KB).. This is true for every picture containing a lot of detail (Trees, Forests, horizontol lines (stairs) etc.) - not so bad for closeup face shots, unless that person is really old
    There is no SIGNIFICANT difference on the result by how the iMovie project is fed into iDVD. When the movie is sent to iDVD using the iM command "send to..." the quality is worse (and you let iM render when it asks) than if the movie is dragged into the iDVD window - but again, the difference is not significant. The result will suck. The DVD will also look bad, when the iMovie is exported has high res quicktime first, before imported into iDVD. Again, its slightly better that way, but not significant.
    Whenever a slideshow is created in iPhoto and than exported to iDVD (or via being a quicktime movie through iMovie into iDVD) the result will be however stunning. But that totally defeats the purpose of iMovie and the degree of freedom of designing slidehows in a very appealing manner.....
    The problem I think lies in how iMovie processes still images. And this is not a bug, but more of a mathematical/programmatical problem. iMovie has to REDUCE THE RESOLUTION of your still. A 2000x3000 pixel image @ 300 dpi(roughly the dimensions of a 6 MP image) has to be downsized to a TV image (NTSC or PAL, whichever) which has a resolution of approximately 480x640. HD is accordingly higher. The amount of pixels has to be reduced. iMovie can do that. NOT GOOD. But it can. The problem starts when the picture is panning around (KB). iMovie makes a let us say 5 second movie @ 30 fps out of one still image. Almost every frame will be slightly different from the previous one due to the used KB effect. So, the routine of iMovie does this downsize calculation for each single frame - and it removes each time different pixels from the still image, due to a slightly different source still image. Got it?
    Now, when you look on how moiree effects occur (which is some weired math in it's own) than it makes sense, that we see all this jiggereing in horizontol lines of high res. patterns.
    I found that if I reduce the size of each image in Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) prior to importing it into iMovie, the quality of the final product that iMovie and subsequently iDVD spits out in the end is AMAZING (reduce the dpi to approx. 72, so the image resolution is roughly 480x640). This is not a difficult process, because both programms (PS and PSE) handle BATCH PROCESSING. Just let the Mac work for a couple of hours or so.... its WORTH IT (and don't forget to make copies of the high res originals beforehand... :D).
    (before you resize, find out about how to properly resize and rescale an image!!!!)
    I am slightly annoyed that I found that out after producing a long long long long and really good slightshow, that is watchable but looks REALLY cheasy and cheap).
    I hope this helps out.
    Waenni
    Mini G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    I agree that iMovie's still image quality is embarassingly bad and has many bugs.
    Even with no Ken Burns, the sharp images tend to flicker on a TV because iMovie doesn't blur them properly.
    And as you very well described, iMovie's Ken Burns produces uneasy zooms/pans because the subpixel rendering is, uh, suboptimal.
    iMovie's immortal rendering bug when exporting non-Ken Burns'ed images to iDVD/tape doesn't make things any better.
    Yes, bicubically downsampling the input images to 640x480 or adding gaussian blur to the megapixel input images takes care of the flicker and uneasy zooms/pans, but as a side-effect the maximal zoom-ins are then TOO blurry.
    The best workaround is to use Photo To Movie's higher quality export setting. It has the best quality rendering engine (I recently compared it to Still Life and FotoMagico). Disclaimer: I'm just a satisfied customer of Photo To Movie.

  • How to Avoid wrong spell MD values at Qry selection

    Hi all,
    The issue is at Query Selection:
    We set:
    Query def. Filter value selection = Only values in infoprovider
    Query Execution Filter Val. Selectn = Only values in InfoProvider
    I want to see only Info provider(TD) values not Master values @ Qry selection for the info object (customer)
    Example
    Customer MD:
    CID:
    John - correct name
    JOKN - Wrong spell
    We Don't want to delete these values.
    - NO records there in cube for (CID = JOKN) and in reports with the name JOKN
    I want to see only JOHN in selection not JOKN(Wrong spell).
    Please tell me how to avoid wrong spell values at Qry selection level without deleting Master data.
    Thanks in advance

    Hello Nara,
    One solution is to write customer-exit variable that will be populated only by correct values. You can archieve this by joining master data table with DSO active table
    or master data table with dimension table and fact table(s).
    Now restrict query with this non-input variable in restrictions and create input variable that will take place in default values.
    But since it's customer master data you may encounter serious performance problems. I guess that's the reason why BEx doesn't do this by default.

    The logic of this select is completely weird. Whcih order of the db-tables should be used, which indexes?
    On RESB matnr, werks and xloek are in one index, but rsnum not.
    Are the conditions in fs_plan_order and it_tal connected or independent?
    It is probably much faster, to leave the  fs_plan_order condition away and check it on the result.

  • Estimated Row Count Query. How to avoid?

    Attention development team. Plase pay attention that the statement is badly formed as
    Hints entered into "Query Hint" field of the VO is placed in outer query but intended to use in sub query and will not be taken into account by optimizer!
    My question is how to avoid this query and/or how can I replace a functionality for estimating dataset cardinality by user defined function or so?
    Best regards,
    Vyacheslav

    I tried the suggested solution but could not figure
    out how to get the current query string to extract
    the WHERE clause to use in my own query or to get the
    parameters to build my own WHERE. How about a more
    explicit code example?
    Joe:
    A few different ways to do this. First, note that getQueryHitCount()
    method receives the following parameter:
    ViewRowSetImpl viewRowSet
    To get the entire query statement, you can call
    String entireQuery = vo.getQuery();
    For each row set (identified by the viewRowSet parameter), you have a
    set of where-clause parameters. Some of these are user provided
    (through setWhereClauseParam calls) and some of these are system
    provided (system provided params are primarily for view links).
    To get all where-clause params (both user and system params), you
    call:
    Object[] paramVals = viewRowSet.getParametersAsStorageTypes();
    Again, paramVals include both user and system param vals.
    If you do
    int noUserParams = viewRowSet.getWhereClauseParams().length;
    noUserParams will tell how many of these are user supplied:
    paramVals[0] .. paramVals[noUserParams-1] are user supplied and the
    rest are system supplied.
    If you want to get the Long postings are being truncated to ~1 kB at this time.

    I believe that BADIs could possibly be used for screen enhancements, but have not had any previous exposure to BADIs, so I'm really not sure whether it's possible to use BADIs for our specific requirement.  For example, using the advice given in the 2nd post in thread BADI for contract, I've searched SAPMF05A for all 'CALL METHOD cl_exithandler=>get_instance' statements, and have found that a single BADI (FBAS_CIN_MF05AFA0 - EWT - Downpayment Clearing - Tax transfer for CIN) seems to exist for FB01.  The description of this BADI sounds completely inappropriate for our requirement.  However, subsequent posts in that thread suggest far more BADIs for the relevant transaction than were given when searching the ABAP for all 'CALL METHOD cl_exithandler=>get_instance' statements, so I'm not convinced that the procedure I'm following will provide me with all the relevant BADIs for the transaction.
    Please can you advise me how to identify which BADIs - if any - can be used to control screens before output for FB01 screen SAPMF05A/332 (SAP R/3 4.6C)?
    Many thanks in anticipation,
    Jules

    Hi Kuntal,
    Thank you very, very much for your prompt response and very useful alternative suggestion.
    The screen variant solution would be invaluable under different circumstances, but would be too complex to administer for this particular issue because we're trying to hide the field from unauthorised users in over 100 invoice entry/maintenance/display transactions.
    We can make a Process Before Output modification to 4 SAP standard programs (LF040O00, LFDCBFM0, MF05AO00_DYNPRO_MODIFIZIEREN, MF05LO00) to make the field invisible for unauthorised users (i.e. whose user-ids are not in a Z* table), but would prefer to avoid modification if we could use BADIs instead.  You've said that you're not sure how we can identify the relevant BADIs, but I very much appreciate the suggestion you've made anyway - it might be useful to others who find themselves in a similar situation for a more limited number of transactions.
    Please can someone advise me how to identify which BADIs - if any - can be used to control screens before output for FB01 screen SAPMF05A/332 (SAP R/3 4.6C)?
    Many thanks,
    Jules
