How to blur an image in my video?

Hello,
I would like to blur someone's face in a video clip and I'm not sure the steps to do this. Could someone lead me in the right direction?

    Hi - I've been trying for 2 hours to just blur something out of a video to no avail, using rectangle mask, then 'gaussient' filter. All I see on the screen, even after increasing the "amount" of blur to maximum setting, is a red rectangle. The blur effect is barely noticeable. I can't see what I'm doing wrong? Additional questions:
    1) How do I get the layer to "stick?" Just save or export the project as an mp4?
    2) How do set the start and stop of the filter? (I can change the start with the 'handle bars' on the purple bar, but not the end).
    OS/X 10.9.5 (although updating to Yosemite shortly!).

    If I'm understanding what you're looking to do, to blur a portion of footage:
    Add your footage
    Duplicate it
    Add your shape mask to the duplicate footage
    Add the blur filter to the duplicate footage*
    *Be sure to add the filter to the footage and not the mask, otherwise you'll be blurring the shape mask (making it appear feathered, instead of blurring the footage).
    Your Layers List should look like this:
         Group
              Footage copy
                   Rectangle mask
                   Gaussian Blur
              Footage
    Not this:
         Group
              Footage copy
                   Rectangle mask
                        Gaussian Blur
              Footage
    Additional questions:
    1) How do I get the layer to "stick?" Just save or export the project as an mp4?

    1) I'm not sure I follow what you're looking for here. Saving the project will allow you to open it in the future to modify or export it again. Once your project is finished, you can export it as a movie or image sequence or directly to a web service. It all depends on your delivery needs.
    2) You've got it right, just like how you change the start, you can do that with the end.
    It sounds like either you don't have your entire project visible so you're not seeing the end of the filter. Try zooming out of the Timeline. (lower right corner is a slider, or click the Timeline area and hit shift+z).
    Or the filter is applied to an object that is bigger than your project. Set the playhead to where you want the filter to end and with it selected, hit o. This sets an outpoint for the selected object.  You can also adjust the timing for any object in the Properties tab in the Inspector. Twirl open the Timing brick and you'll see scrubbers for In, Out and Duration.
    Hope that gets you going.

    If you change the data[] array to something like this
    float[] data = {1/9f,1/9f,1/9f,
                    1/9f,1/9f,1/9f,
                    1/9f,1/9f,1/9f}; then you would have stumbled upon one of the easiest ways to blur an image. A convolution just basically takes the above array and "places" it on the image. In the above case I have a 3x3 "window" that is moved across the image. At every point the pixels are multiplied with the corresponding value in the window and then added together. The sum becomes the new value for the center pixel.
    So in the above case, I'm taking 1/9 of every pixel, summing them, and making the sum the center pixel. For a colored image this is done on all three channels (red, green, blue). The resulting image then has the property that every pixel has a little bit of its neighbors' colors. This achieves a blurring effect. Of course, there are more accurate (and still fast) ways to go about blurring, but a box-convolution where each array element is +1/size+ is probably the easiest.
    Now as far as convolutions go, you can manipulate the values in the window or the dimensions of window to achieve various effects (median filter, primitive edge detection, sharpening, embossing, ect..). In fact, convolutions are so important to image processing that most computers have built in hardware to speed up the calculations. The ConvolveOp in core java tries to utilize this acceleration, but has certain annoying limitations.

    How to insert flying images  in a video...someone it's speaking in the left side and in the right side some flying pictures are coming, staying for 2-3 seconds one by one....some ideas???
    Like the weather forecast...you have someone in the left side speaking and she is showing some images in the right side.

    It can be done in either. There are 3 steps.
    Learn about greenscreen (keying) including lighting, filming, best formats for video (the way they do it in the weather segment) or masking and roto.
    learn about image editing including sizing images, color correcting, applying effects
    learn about controlling motion and editing duration of stills in a NLE or After Effects
    When you have a few of these basics down and have designed your production you then load up the video and the stills, key out the background or mask around your talent to separate the talent from the background, add your photos to the time line and animate their duration and position.
    This is extremely basic stuff that can be accomplished in a NLE or in AE. You can basically reproduce just about any effect you've ever seen in a movie in AE with the right planning and plug-ins. You can do just about anything you've ever seen in a news broadcast in any modern NLE.

    I'm not sure of his/her reasoning behind this, but I have yet to find a way to record video with mmapi on j2me. So with that restriction, I can see how one could make it so that it just records a lot of jpegs, and then makes it a movie.
    I would be interested finding a workaround for this too. Either if someone would explain how to record video with mmapi or how to make recorded images into a video. Thanks!

    This is not Adobe. Rather user to user. We are all visitors here.
    Just a bit of history....back in the days of Premiere Elements 4, you could set a "poster frame" in what was called the Project area. You did this by right clicking a blank area there and, from the drop down menu that appeared, selecting View/Preview Area, and using the poster frame feature there.
    As I said, when a video imports into Premiere Elements, the thumbnail of the import has been presenting as the first frame of the video. With this Preview area "poster frame" option, you could set the video's thumbnail in the Project area so that the first frame was another frame in the video. But, this "perk" was restricted to thumbnails of the video in Project area.
    If you exported to file with the first frame modified video, the export's thumbnail in Windows Explorer would present with other than the real first frame or the poster frame as the first frame.
    Also, in more recent versions, I have observed that the export to file does not display the real first frame of the video in Windows Explorer. Seems random, but I have not kept track.
    And, remember, at the onset I wrote
    As far as I have ever seen, Premiere Elements Windows uses the first frame of the video for its thumbnail in the program.
    I know of no way within Premiere Elements to control what the program opts to do in this matter. In some compatibility
    issues, it opts to give no image but a generic one.
    I did not say that you can expect to have the Premiere Elements' export file's thumbnail in Windows displaying with its real first frame. And, the more you get into this, depending on the versions, more details need to be added to my comment about "...first frame of video for its thumbnail in the program..."
    I would have to look into all this further to get perspective on the contributing factors.

    I have changed the desktop image on all of my users, as well as the screen savers.  However, when I logout of one user and the screen where you select another user comes up, there is an image on the background of this particular screen that I cannot figure out how to change.
    This is crucial because I do not want to see my crazy, abusive ex-wife every time I select a different user...even if it is a blurred image.
    This blurred out image does not appear anywhere else on any of the different user accounts as a background/desktop image.

    I'll assume you want to create a still to use outside FCPX, not a still frame within FCPX.  It's kinda hidden in the "share."  Go File/Share/Add Destination.  You want "Save Current Frame."  After you've created that destination, it'll be there for you in the future under Share.

    You are not really in the right place.  I don't think you can edit video with Photoshop CS5, but Premier Pro CS5 can definitely do it.  Off the top of my head, copy the video track on the timeline, (hold down the Alt/Opt key and drag).
    Then Effects > Video Effects > Stylize > Mosaic.
    Adjust number of blocks in Effects controls.
    Then add Video effects > Keying > Four point matte
    Adjust position of matte in effects controls.
    If you want the matte to track with the video, move to start point on time line and adjust position.  Move to end point and edit position.  Matte will now move from one point to the other.
