How to close a open file at OS level using Java program

I want to find a way to close a file connection at operating system (Windows 2000) level so that another program can overwrite the file. Here is the background information:
I need to schedule a job to automatically update certain files. But, when someone is accessing the file, the update will fail until I manually close the file connection at file server ( I have the system administrator privilege). I want to write a Java program that can automatically close the open file like I do manually at file server. This program can be placed on the file server in order to the job.
Does anyone know if there is any way in Java that can do the job?

It's up to the application that opened the files to close them. There are utilities you can use to list/kill process on the machine..but you have to ask yourself WHY is this happening in the first place? It's more correct to fix the REAL problem - having your apps shut down properly - than to write a utility to close files.
That said...java alone cannot do this. You would either have to use JNI to get native access to the system or use System.Runtime to call an executable that does the job for you.

In our current BDB environment,at runtime we switch Berkeley DB directories so that application reads data from new directory.
We ran into File Descriptors issue when we switch to newer version of data as system was exceeding allowed number of File Descriptors. And had to restart the machine.
1) I wanted to confirm that would Closing BDB Environment using env.close() , fix this issue ? Meaning does closing of environment, closes BDB file descriptors ?
2) Also is there any way to test this functionality of closing of BDB File Descriptors ? We tried with "lsof" command which lists open file descriptors but could not see anything related jdb files or similar ? So how do we make sure that, File Descriptors are indeed getting closed or not ?
Please let me know if there is any other way to get around File Descriptor problem.

Use a URLConnection to make the connection to the page at the needed URL. From the URLConnection, you can get an InputStream that is the stream of data from that page. Just search through the stream and find the <title> tags (don't forget to check for case sensitivity).

Alt+F4 in Windows only closes the active program.
Command+Q does the same thing for Mac. Just keep hitting that key combo untill all are closed.

I did the below steps.
1. Created New OAWorkspace
2. Created New project
3. Imported the page .xml file
4. Added new .java file by extending the controller class
5. Added code in the .java file.
6. Ran the .xml file
As I copied all the folders from Unix box, the page was opened.
But My question was where can I see the .class file the extended controller. It's a .java file. How to compile and get the .class file for this .java file. If I get this .class file, I can go to the page and click the personlize page. and change the Controller name to the new path by ftp ing the new class to the cust.oracle.apps.pos.changeorder.webiui.
Please let me know how to create the .class file.

All are Java files are stored in JDEV_INSTALL_DIR:\jdevhome\jdev\myprojects\
In your case the path java would be
JDEV_INSTALL_DIR:\jdevhome\jdev\ myprojects \cust\oracle\apps\pos\changeorder\webui\
AND
Once you compile the java file in Jdeveloper, Class files get generated @ below path
In your case the path of class would be
JDEV_INSTALL_DIR:\jdevhome\jdev\ myclasses \cust\oracle\apps\pos\changeorder\webui\

Do you mean "how to add a jar to the classpath at runtime"? Can't be done without using a classloader, typically URLClassLoader or a subclass thereof. Why you want to not use the proven method is beyond me. Presumably because you don't understand classloading. In which case, forget it.

Can you drag and drop the attachments visible in the email to the Desktop OK or does that fail ?
Re the sending: Are these recipients on Mac's or PC's as the file type could be an issue, if on Mac's then try setting the Mail Preferences Composing setting to Plain Text not Rich Text and see if that improves things.
