How to control or know Fan Speed of the TBD

Hi, I Need to know how to control the Fan Speed of the Thunderbolt Display.
And the current temperature and the fan speed of the TBD.

Not sure you can.  I have never seen any app that would do that.

    I think I narrowed it down to a temp senor issue. But I don't know where the sensor is that controls the Fan speed of the power supply?

    I'm not a tech but if the Ambient Temperature board was providing faulty indication then I would expect all fan speeds to run higher, not just the Power Supply fan. If the fan is running fast it is probably either the fan itself or a faulty temperature sensor in the power supply. Also since the Ambient Temperature indicates 72 degrees that is a pretty good indication the board is functioning normally, if it were reporting a ridiculously high value such as 20 degrees warmer than room temperature than that would be an indication it was bad.
    I'm confused here. You've stated that you moved to a new office and the computer there is annoyingly loud. You seem to be trouble shooting the computer yourself. Does your company have an IT department? Have you let your boss know the computer reports an error code and needs to be fixed? Have you asked your boss if you could swap your current computer with your old one because this one is loud and makes it hard to concentrate on work?

  • About the rules (logic) between the fan speed and the temperatures?

    Hello All,
    Well, I've had a bad experience with my MBP last week: my motherboard busted and had to replace it... Expensive part to replace!
    After thinking about the reasons why it failed, my attention has been directed toward a possible motherboard overheating, which might have damaged the motherboard.
    I've installed the iStat Pro widget and regularly monitor temperatures displayed vs. fan speed. I do get a bit nervous when I see a 84 oC CPU temperature and idle (2000 rpm) fan speeds. My GPU temperature is also sometimes in that range.
    My questions are:
    1) does anybody know the rules (logic) between the various temperatures (CPU, CPU heatsink, GPU, GPU heatsink, enclosure, HD, etc.) and the fan speeds?
    2) other than with the fews apps out there, is there a way to customize the rules? Is there a text file or a plist file somewhere where I can change the rules?

    If your idle speeds are 2000 rpm, you have one of the original Core Duo MBPs. For me, I see fans on my 17" CD MBP speeding up once temps get into the upper 70s °C.
    Apps like smcFanControl allow you to alter the setpoints. Note that some users who installed smcFanControl, then uninstalled it, report symptoms like yours - namely, the fans remain at idle no matter how hight the temps get, until a thermal shutdown is triggered (somewhere close to 100 °C).

  • Fan Speed off the Charts

    I'm running a 15.4" 2.16 core 2 duo with 10.6.6.
    Last week my fan(s) decided to start being really loud. Right now my CPU is 92% idle and I have 1.14 gb free of my 2gb of ram (according to activity monitor), but my fans are going an average of 6000rpm (according to SMC fan control). The computer is at 43 degrees celsius.
    I have nothing set to turn up my fan speed. Any ideas?

    First thing is to see if a sensor has failed. Find your original system disk/s and use the one that is marked as bearing Apple Hardware Test. Instructions are here:

    Note that the fans will run high (6000 rpm max) while running AHT. That's normal. I set my MBP up on little spacers to allow air underneath during the test.
    Most people don't have the translator for any error codes that might appear, but if you post the errors here, some may look familiar enough that one of us can take an educated guess. Errors with "SNS" embedded in the code are generally sensor codes.
    There are several things you can do to investigate heat/fan issues:
    1) See if any background processes are eating up CPU cycles. Quit all running user applications so the computer is at normal idle. Find Activity Monitor and launch it. IMPORTANT: change the "Show" pulldown at the top of the AM window from its default of "My Processes" to "All Processes." Some of the real culprits may not show if AM only checks user processes. There is a column for "%CPU." Click that column header to sort by CPU usage.
    If any process is using more than about 25 percent of the CPU cycles while the computer is idling, post the names of the processes and we can see if they can be eliminated.
    2) Make certain your physical arrangement of the computer and your usage patterns are not contributing to overheating. Apple recommends against using the MBP on your lap or any surface that contacts the case bottom. The case bottom is part of the heat dissipation system and needs air. If you need to use the computer in your lap, make a simple lap board from scrap plywood. The height of the rubber feet is usually enough to let the air move but, if you are playing graphics-intensive games, you may want to insert some 1/2-inch (13mm) spacers, or get a powered chill pad to help move heat away.
    The main exhaust vent is under the display hinge on the back panel of the case. It must not be obstructed.

    For the silver-key MBPs, the safety shutdown to prevent heat damage is aout 100C/212F. Your 43C is well within the normal range and should no be making the fans go all out unless SMC Fan Control is set to do so.

  • How can I maximize my wifi speed using the Time Capsule?

    I do not feel that my wifi speed is as fast as it should be.  I have a 2 TB Time Capsule and connect wirelessly with an Apple MacBook Air, an iPhone 5s, an iPad 4, and iPad mini.  The online manual just tells how to do the initial setup but not how to tweak the settings.  Any idea how I can check my settings?

    There's little if anything to tweak. Your wireless speed will depend upon how many devices are using it at the same time since it is shared bandwidth. Wireless is also affected by what's between the device and the router like walls, ceilings, and other obstructions. If you have two devices connected at the same time one of which only supports 802.11a/b connections and one that supports and another that uses 802.11a/b/n (faster), then your network speed will drop down to the speed of the slowest device connected.
    Just use it. There's little you can do unless you have defective hardware.

    I am running a web template in the BI7.0 Broadcaster. The output prints in the PDF format. In the precalculation tab I have set up 4 variables(VAR1,VAR2 .. etc) . The main folder where these PDF files get stored I can control the text but dont know how to change the PDF file names which fall into this folder. All the PDF files have the technical name and number(like XXX_00000,XXX_00001 etc.) How can I control the text for these files.

    it is not possible to get any influence on the filenames. If you use Filternavigation the filename is generated to be unique.

    NI does not have a LabVIEW driver for that instrument but you might want to check with Keithley.
    On the main Instrument Driver Network page are links on developing an instrument driver. There is a wizard (Tools>Instrumentation>Create Instrument Driver Project) as well as the Instrument I/O Assistant. You will need the instrument manual to look up the programming commands. There are example VIs for serial communication.

    I am using a USB 6251 DAQ board and would like to control a switch. I am gathering airflow, pressure, and acoustic data on the same board (analog input) and would like the switch to trigger when the airflow value is within a pre-determined range. Finally, I would like to reverse the polarity of the switch (to off) about a second after the initial digital signal, all of which is during continuous data acquisition.
    I am able to actuate the switch only when pressing the "run" button in the DAQ assistant window. I am proficient with data acquisition but have never tried programming an output... Please help!

    You probably won't get the control of the digital port on your card by only using the DAQ Assistant. One of the following examples should provide you the functionality that you would like out of the box:
    Digital - SW - Timed Output (Simple)
    Digital - Continuous Output (More Complex)
    Continuous Write Digital Port - External Clock - Non Regeneration (Most Complex)

  • How can I control my fan speed?

    How can I control my fan speed on my macbook pro? I use SMC for gaming and streaming video from the internet when using my Mac OS, but I partitioned my drive and installed Windows 8 in order to play a different game (not a huge game) and the computer heats up dramatically when playing on Windows through Boot Camp to the point that it freezes every time (it never does this when playing a mac game or streaming on the normal partition Mac OS).
    Any suggestions or programs to control fan speed of the mac from windows?

    Get a cooling pad.  That will much better than trying to constantly adjust fan speeds.

  • [Solved] Asus L1366 mobo, cpu fan speed control

    Hi, everyone,
    I finally have this new core i7 system, to replace my old AMD athlonx2.  I have one question about the CPU fan speed control.
    I remember that in my old system, the cpu fan speed control works out of box, no configuration is needed.
    But when I install arch 64 on this new i7 system, the cpu fan is running at its maximum speed constantly while the CPU temperature is modestly low. I know there is a wiki teaching how to do it.
    However, I am just curious why it doens't work out of box any more? Does CPU fan control work for you guys out of box normally? especially the new Core i7 cpu users?
    Please let me know, really appreciated it.

    First off, it would be useful to know what the sensors-detect script actually reports.
    Okay. How fan control works on Linux: First, navigate to /sys/class/hwmon
    Each of these folders, i.e. hwmon0, stands for a sensors monitor / fan controller on your mainboard that may control one or several fans. Inside hwmonN, there should be a subfolder called device, which contains several interfaces if your BIOS allows software-side fan control. You can read them with cat and write to them with echo.
    Examples:
    pwm1_enable shows if OS-level fan control is enabled (1) or disabled and in BIOS control (0). Changing fan speed won't work if this is disabled. (i.e. cat /sys/class/hwmon0/device/pwm1_enable reports 0 -> disabled; you could enable it with echo 1 > /sys/class/hwmon0/device/pwm1_enable).
    pwm1 allows to change fan speed. The values range from 0 (fan off) to 255 (full speed, 12V).
    fan1_input shows the current RPM if a fan is connected. You can only read from this interface. Its useful to check all of these in the each of the hwmon folders to find out if there is actually a fan connected to the fan controller (they often have more ports than mainboard manufacturers use).
    There might be a fan1_div, this is somehow related to how the kernel reads the RPM, I don't know how it works.
    temp1_input interfaces can appeare too, if some of the chips have temperature sensors located somewhere. I *think* lm_sensors places the core temperatures it reads from CPU (the coretemp-isa-000X thingies) in one of the hwmon-folders too.
    There might be interfaces for different fans in the same hwmon folder, i.e. pwm2_enable, pwm2, fan2_input, etc., all interfaces with the same index belong to the same physical fan connector, and all in the same hwmonN are managed by the same IC on your mainboard.
    Warning: These interfaces, if they work, control the fans directly without any kind of security measure. If you shut some essential fan down, it will stay off until you reboot your CPU shuts down.
    (If you see something likein0_alarm, in0_input, in0_max, etc. it's a voltage monitoring chip.)
    If one of those interfaces can do something, OS-level fan control does work, if none of those folders contain a working pwm interface, fan control seems to be unavailable.
    Sometimes there is an option in the BIOS to enable it, and for some BIOSs software-side fan control only works if dynamic fan control is disabled in the BIOS and fan speed is set to a static value - or vice versa.
    I don't know what you are using to control fan speed, there are many applications that use these interfaces, i.e. GNOME or KDE power managers, so I'm not sure what is happening:
    IF: Windows 7 enables OS-level fan control and sets it the RPM to those you observed and you have nothing that provides fan control in Arch and so fan control stays at BIOS-level, which might also read out a different sensor / the same sensor differently or it might be more conservative in setting fan speeds altogether;
    OR: You have something that provides fan control installed in Arch and it reads out a the wrong value supplied by lm_sensors and thus sets a higher fan speed.
    Anyway, possible solutions I can think of:
    Find out if you have some kind of fan control software and what it does. For example, I use the fancontrol daemon, I can't help you if you use something else.
    The wiki mentions how to assign a fan speed to a certain temperature sensors. You might assign it to a different one. For example, there are no sensor chips on the mainboard of my EEE (no temp1 etc.) so I assigned the fan speed to the temperature reported by the BIOS via ACPI (those are in /sys/class/thermal, also no "device" subfolder on EEEs):
    FCTEMPS=/sys/class/hwmon/hwmon0/pwm1=/sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp
    You could also change the MINTEMP/MAXTEMP values to one higher than those you actually want to compensate for the effect of lm_sensors reporting temperatures that are too high.
    It is currently not possible for a mortal user to change the coretemps lm_sensors reads, see this post, last paragraph.
    There is a configuration file, /etc/sensors3.conf, you can change sensor names and adjust offsets here, but only for the monitoring chips and their sensors that are on the mainboard.

  • How to reduce cpu fan speed just by hardware?

    I have a K8N Neo4-F, AMD3200+ and "arctic cooling freezer 64 pro" as cpu fan. The rpm range of this fan is from 300 to 2200. I use "cool n' quiet" and "Smart CPU Fan Target with 40°C" as bios setting. When the cpu is idle ( ... just doing some typing or so on ...) it has a temperature of 32°C and the fan has ~950 RPM.
    I think the fan speed is to high for this cpu load (< 5% and 1000Mhz CPU Clock). My expectation in this szenario is to have the cpu fan speed near the lower bound (300 rpm), but I don't know how to manage this (with just bios settings)  ... any hints?

  • Is it possible to control CPU fan speed (lower) with K8T NEO2-FIS2R (MS-6702)?

    I have:
    MSI K8T NEO2-F motherboard
    AMD Athlon 64 3000+ processor
    Bios is latest I found, AMI BIOS 9.20
    Operating system is Windows XP pro.
    Processor was boxed and with the normal amd fan.
    Processor fan is plugged in CFAN slot.
    My problem is that the cpu fan spins a bit too fast. Cpu temp stays at 25C and fan is spinning at 1800 rpm.
    Setting manual mode from corecenter didn't change the fan speed at all. Not up or down. Neither can SpeedFan program. But if I stress the cpu, the fan starts spinning faster.
    What is controlling the fan speed and can I manually control it?
    There are no control options in bios.
    If I missed any information, please do ask more.

    Core Center is crap, you can't do anything else with that than uninstall.
    Speedfan works. You'll have to set "PWM 2" from "thermal cruise" to "manual control" somewhere in the advanced configuration menu, I don't remember where you can find that. The help file provided with speedfan is quite good, I strongly recommend reading it carefully. Using speedfan you can also control a second fan connected to the SFAN-connectors.
    The built-in fan control sets the speed of the CPU fan to 2/3 of its nominal RPM value (my fan starts at 2100/min, max is something about 3300/min or so). Its speed increases quite late, on my system at temperatures above 50°C. And it increases quite slowly.

  • Hot MBP and fan speeds - what are optimal values?

    My MBP (late 2006 17" version) seems to be running hot in the afternoons, even though I have air-conditioning on.
    I just ran Fan Control (very nice by the way!) and saw the temperature was up around 70 C and the left and right fan speeds were about 2000 rpm.

    I selected the "Higher RPM" setting, which sets the minimum speeds to 4000 rpm. After changing the setting, the two fan speeds were initially showing 4525 and 4531.
    After about 10 minutes my temperature dropped to 57-59 C and the rpms for both fans went down to about 4000 rpm. And my MBP is obviously cooler to the touch. So I guess the app works.
    My questions are:
    (1) What are good, safe temperatures for the MBP?
    (2) If the temperature was so high, why wouldn't the MBP automatically increase the fan speed beyond the 2000 level automatically? Is 70 C not considered high enough to make the fan run quicker?
    (3) How fast is it safe to run the fans at? I am guessing they will die sooner if run faster?
    (4) Is making the fans run as fast as possible to first cool off the machine and then reducing the fan speed a good idea?
    (5) When it is cold, do the fans stop entirely?
    I have actually never heard my MBP fans at all. I guess they are either quiet or my room is so noisy it drowns out the fan noise.

    I agree on tjk answer . To add my 2 cents:
    (2) : what is not said is that GPU shut down also the computer, but we didn't know at which temperature. It seem anyway that GPU is not designed to run at 90/100 ° C.
    at least, not the ati radeon x1600..
    Apple seem to consider that 70° is ok, but it could be also the autonomy factor which have been in mind, not the durability of your product.
    (3) the fans are brushless. so they are designed to run for very long time at high speed. But they run also with a little lubricant on they rotor axe. with time, this lubricant goes away, and the fan make noise as the axe touch more the outside. a noisy fan is coming from this.
    My Mbp was dying and becoming useless, because of fans making really big noise, and even stoping, which is synonimous of death if you don't shut up immediately the computer.
    oil on axe have cured them, for now. I can't say how long they will go, but i can play some game, or encode for 8 hours, with fans set up at 4500/5000° in smcfancontrol.
    Imo, I will try to set up fans for the macbook to not goes above 65 ° when heavily charged, and 55/57 ° when just surfing.
    So it say that I change the setting before I use some soft who need high cpu or gpu power.
    and when normal mode, safari only for instance, i have my own default setting at 2000 and my mbp is between 55 to 57°
    (my 15' mbp rev A has 1000 rpm by default, so, when doing nothing, it is at 63/65 °)
    needless to say that i didn't have any of the bugs I had since I do my manual adjust of fan's rpm. (hard reboot, glitches when playing games, computer freezing suddenly, horizontal lines while playing youtube or movies, etc..)
    (4) a better idea should be to ancipate the higher temperature, it is what i do.
    cooling fast a piece of computer is not a so good thing . as for anything (a car motor is the same..)
    so, before running a heavy game as cod4 or a crossover game, or encoding, if you start your higher rpm just before, you whole computer will not have to go up and down.
    that the same idea for letting him at 55 and not 65 . Have in mind that all composants are at the temperature, including your battery (which should be at a 30/40 ° , if we follow Apple recommendations, lol) .
    (5) no, they never stop, if they stop, your mbp burn it's intel CPU, you know.... depending on models, it is 1000, 1500 or 2000 rpm by default.
    so, a small digest of my post:
    cool down your mac, it will always be good for him .
    no need to have it at 40°, but try to have 8 to 10° less than now, in all situation.
    a fan is designed to run for a long time, not so as well as a hard disk, who can spin at 7200 or more for years, but it is designed to run for years.
    as fans are not the same on your computer than on mine, i can't give you the info, but mine have a red zone from 5000 rpm to 6000 rpm, which mean they run at their limits. it's an electrical limit, more than a rpm limit.
    A MBP cost a lot, fans don't cost much if you buy them in direct to china, or even if you bought them with apple, or if you just put some oil when they get noisy, as in your car, lol..
    if the cpu can run to 100 °, is that the case for others electronics components ?
    more than 100 peoples on that forum have a ati x1600 gpu dying..
    So my only regret is to NOT have been aware to cool better my mbp 2 years ago, because now, the damage are here, and irreversible.

  • NX7600GT Diamond Plus and fan speed with Dual Core Center

    I just got a NX 7600GT Diamond Plus for my HTPC. I noted that Riva Tuner and other utilities are not able to control the fan speed of the video card. The only way one can control the fan speed is via Dual Core Center and 3D Core Cell. The problem is that the default setting for fan speed on Dual Core Center is too high and clearly audible. How can I get Dual Core Center to start with user defined presets during windows start-up/boot-up ?
    What I want to do is to put the fan into 'SILENT' mode automatically during Dual Core Center start-up. Any ideas / suggestions ?

  • Unable to adjust fan speeds after OS X reinstall

    Hi all,
    I recently had a problem with Mac OS X on my MacBook Pro that eventually led to me reinstalling the OS from scratch. I erased the drive completely and did a clean reinstall using the Mac OS X 10.4.10 discs that came with the MacBook Pro.
    Prior to reinstalling the OS, I was able to use the smcFanControl utility to adjust the fan speeds in my MBP as I saw fit. This was a great solution to keep a good balance between noise and temperature. I kept them running at 6000 RPM most of the time because I work on the computer at my desk most of the time. However when I take it to school with me, 6000 RPM is too loud to use comfortably in my classes. I used to be able to lower my fan speed to 4500 RPM, but since reinstalling, running smcFanControl will lock my fan speeds at the max (6000 RPM) and not allow me to lower them. Attempting to enter values manually tells me that I am attempting to lower the fan speeds below the minimum allowed value, but the fans are supposed to be able to range between 2000 RPM and 6000 RPM.
    I'm not sure why an OS reinstall would break settings like these, but it appears that it has. Does anyone have any idea how I can reset the range of fan speeds back to what they're supposed to be?

    I am currently using the Fan Control application you linked to (as I have been even before I came here) but the variables in that program don't allow me great enough control over the fan speeds. It is temperature-based, which I like, but the minimum and maximum values generally keep the fan speeds too low and the machine still too hot. I am using it temporarily but I much prefer smcFanControl because it allows me to set the fan speeds directly.
