How to control the number of running thread

I need to maintain the number of running thread in the system or in a threadgroup, as too many running thread will make the system throughput drop tremendously because of the context swtich and memory problem. The threadgroup is not a solution as its active count is the number of the threads that are alive, it includes the thread being blocked as well. I don't know whether there is any way to control it without the use of an expensive monitor?
Thanks for any help

If you create a pool of any sort you will need a point where all requests for a resource from the pool must go via, and that piece of code could potentially become a bottle neck. But if you develop it well there will be a very small piece of code that is sychrnonized that will either put a request in a queue as there are no resources available, or it will provide the requested resource. As far as i am aware there is no safe way around this as you will have multiple threads requesting the resource.

  • How to control the number of fields in the Advanced mode in af:query

    Hi,
    How to control the number of fields in the Advanced mode in <af:query>?
    Say i have 20 fields in my table and i created a view criteria with 2 fields. It would work perfectly in Basic mode. But in the Advanced mode all other fields selection is possible on clicking the ADD Fields button. I did not want the client to make a search with all 20 fields. Only 10 fields are to be listed in the Advanced Mode even though there are 20 fields in my table.
    How do i control the list of fields in ADDFields button?
    Any ideas?

    You can uncheck the Querable property of the attributes which you need not show up in the Advanced Mode (but they will not show up in other modes too !) or programatically set the same as mentioned here -
    http://adfcodebits.blogspot.com/2010/11/bit-27-setting-view-object-attributes.htmlAlso you can hide the AddFields button as suggested here - http://www.notjustjava.com/2011/12/cool-tips-to-showhide-components-of-the-query-control-of-adf/

    Hi all,
    Can anybody answer, How to control the number of instances of an object being created?
    suppose at any point of time, if i would like to have 5 instances at the maximum, how can i disable the further requests?
    Thanks in advance

    write a factory method that controls the number of instances for you:
    import java.util.List;
    import java.util.Arrays;
    public class Bar
       private static final int MAX_BARS = 5;
       private static int numBars = 0;
       private int id;
       public static void main(String [] args)
          try
             int numBars = ((args.length > 0) ? Integer.parseInt(args[0]) : MAX_BARS+1);
             Bar [] bars = new Bar[numBars];
             for (int i = 0; i < bars.length; ++i)
                bars[i] = Bar.create();
             System.out.println(Arrays.asList(bars));
          catch (Exception e)
             e.printStackTrace();
       private Bar() { this.id = numBars++; }
       public String toString() { return "I am bar number " + this.id; }
       public static Bar create()

  • Bode Analyzer: How to control the number of points per decade?

    Total newbie here. I cannot control the number of points per decade in the Bode VI. It's always 5 points per decade.
    Don't even know how to get the Elvis Version #, but it's at least 4.1, cuz the Elvis installer won't install 4.1 (says current version is newer). Running WinXP.
    How can I get Elvis to respond to my request for more points per decade?

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Mike,
    If you're ever curious about what drivers that you have installed, you can view it using Measurement & Automation Explorer (Start » All Programs » National Instruments » Measurement & Automation Explorer).  Once their, navigate to My System » Software, and you'll find NI ELVISmx along with it's version.
    This behavior that you're seeing is a known issue, filed under Corrective Action Request (CAR) #373017.  For now, the number of points per decade will remain at 5.  Please wait for the next update of NI-ELVISmx to see if this is fixed.

  • How to control the number precision???

    Hi guys,

    How to do that on LV8.6?
    thanks in advance.

    However it is very bad that LabVIEW does not have NUMBER precision control (decimal point)!!! shame!
    Well, you can always write your own subVI with a few strokes of the mouse.
    If you are talking about truncation (a data operation) and not formatting (a cosmetic issues), be aware that many nice and round decimal digits cannot be correctly represented in binary, so you might still be slightly off when you would display e.g. 16 decimal digits.

  • How to control the number of rows selected from a sybase database table?

    Hi, JDBC guru,
    I'm working on project using Sybase 11.9.x database.We need to process a record in a table,first select it from the table,then do some computing,finally write it to a dbf file, if the above steps succeed,remove the original row in the table.Quite evidently, all these operation should be put into one transaction. But how can I select just a number of rows from the sybase database table?
    Any hints?
    Thank you in advance.

  • How to set the number of seconds a servlet is allowed to run

    I use JSP to generate a report, but it will take about 10 minutes to search.
    IE Client screen displays an error message what is "Cannot find out your page" after 8 minutes. How to set the number of seconds a servlet is allowed to run.

    It's not a matter of how long the servlet is running... it's the browser timing out because the servlet hasn't responded to its request.
    You have several options:
    1) "Browser Pinging"
    Your servlet sends some small data which can be either seen or unseen (html comments, hidden chars, etc) by the user at short intervals while your report is running. When the report is finished, the browser will not have timed out because it has been "snacking" on those small bits of data which tell the browser its original request was both heard and being handled. I don't think there is any timeout in IE as long as it receives data continually (or at least before its own timeout mark over and over again...)
    2) Multithreaded processing
    This would probably be a better approach. Have the report run in a separate thread running on the server. You'd want to store a reference to this executing report in the user's session. Instead of making the browser wait for the report to be finished, have the servlet check the user's session to see if a report exists and is running. If one does not exist, create one and start its execution. If one does exist, and is still running, print a "please wait" type of message OR an animation, etc... along with some javascript which will reload the page every few seconds. If the page reloads and the servlet sees that the report is finished, it can then display it to the user.
    Hope this helps,

  • How to limit the number of items that a list control can hold?

    Hi,
    I am using a Flex3 List control for one of my projects.
    I add drag & drop functionality to it, so that i can drag & drop elements from one control to another.
    How to limit the number of items that a list control can hold / can be dropped in a list control ?
    - Sen.

    1. Listen for the dragdrop event on the control you are dragging onto.
    2. check the length of the items in the dataprovider - if it exceeds your maximum override the default drop action with e.preventDefault(); (assuming you used e for the event on the handler).

  • How to set the number of records displayed at run time

    Is it possible to set the number of records displayed block property at run time? The built-in 'GET_BLOCK_PROPERTY' can retrieve the number of RECORDS_DISPLAYED. But I can't find SET_BLOCK_PROPERTY to set this property. Is there anyway I can set this property programmatically? Thanks for any suggestions!

    Bookmark Go to End
    goal: How to vary the number of records displayed in a block
    programmatically
    fact: Oracle Forms Developer
    fix:
    Block property 'Number of Records Displayed' can not be changed during runtime
    using SET_BLOCK_PROPERTY. However, it is still possible programmatically change
    the visual appearance of the form so that it creates effect of changing this
    property. To achieve such an effect follow these steps:
    1. in Forms Builder, in the multirecord block define the new set of items.
    The simplest way is to copy/paste the original item and rename created item.
    2. set properties of these new items so that they are the same as the properties
    of the original items. If these new items were copied from original items
    then properties are already the same. Modify following properties
    'Database item' on new items to value 'No'
    'Synchronize with item' to the value of the original item
    'Number of Items Displayed' to desired value.
    'Visible' to 'No'
    In other words, these new items are mirrors of original items.
    3. code event, which is meant to trigger the change in block appearance.
    This code should use SET_ITEM_PROPERTY built-in to set properties
    like 'VISIBLE', 'ENABLED', 'NAVIGABLE', 'UPDATE_ALLOWED' and others
    to desired value for items which are about to be displayed, then
    move cursor to one of these just displayed items with GO_ITEM built-in
    and then hide the previously displayed items.
    Example:
    Assume that the block is built on SCOTT.DEPT schema. Following will
    change the set of displayed items
    set_item_property('dept.mdeptno',visible,property_true);
    set_item_property('dept.mdname',visible,property_true);
    set_item_property('dept.mloc',visible,property_true);
    set_item_property('dept.mdeptno',enabled,property_true);
    set_item_property('dept.mdname',enabled,property_true);
    set_item_property('dept.mloc',enabled,property_true);
    set_item_property('dept.mdeptno',update_allowed,property_true);
    set_item_property('dept.mdname',update_allowed,property_true);
    set_item_property('dept.mloc',update_allowed,property_true);
    set_item_property('dept.mdeptno',navigable,property_true);
    set_item_property('dept.mdname',navigable,property_true);
    set_item_property('dept.mloc',navigable,property_true);
    go_item('dept.mdeptno');
    set_item_property('dept.deptno',visible,property_false);
    set_item_property('dept.dname',visible,property_false);
    set_item_property('dept.loc',visible,property_false);

  • How to control the rounding rule at answer?

    Hi grus,
    I use the BIEE 11.1.1.6.5.
    And I create the 2 answers(A and B) with a same column which setting is same column formula and data format(Treat Numbers As "number", Decimal places "2") on column properties.
    Then I run the answer A that the value is 3.68( this column's SQL value is 3.675, so this means rounding up the value)
    But I run the answer B with same criteria that the value is 3.67(this means truncating the value)
    Why do these difference happen?
    How to control the rounding rule?

    Hi,
                 When add the Itemcode, default warehouse and costing codes (Profit Center) are automatically asign by SAP.
    When change the warehouse for this Itemcode, the costing codes(Profit Center) are disappear. I don't want to disappear the costing codes, that's why I try to resign the default costing codes when the warehouse change.
                At SAP 2005, easily  access the screen matrix in the marketing document and add the required values in each costing codes columns. But SAP 2007, all costing codes are combined in 1 col and those have the other screen.

  • *IMPORTANT* Limiting the number of active threads

    Hi All,
    i have a few of questions so please bare with me:
    1) What is the best way to limit the number of active threads? ie i want to run 10 threads but i want there to be only 3 running at a time.
    this is how im thinking of doing it rite now:
    count = 0;
    while(...)
    thread[count].start();
    while(threadgroup.activeCount > 4){}
    count++;
    2) I have a class that extends thread how do i overide the constructor so that i can add the thread to the threadgroup?
    ok here is an example of what i mean:
    u can do this with a normal thread: Thread one = new Thread(threadgroup, "what");
    this is what i need to do tho:
    class whatever extends Thread {
    public whatever(int a, int b, ThreadGroup tg)
    { what do i put here to make this thread part of the tg threadgroup?}
    thanx for any help in advance and i kinda need a quick answer cause this is due soon , thanx youssefe2k4

    Hi,
    1) Why do you want to do that?
    2) super(tg, "a name");
    /KajIt's part of a homework assignment... I saw another post on this forum and one at JavaRanch where you need to create an application that given a directory will scan each file and report the file name and how many lines are in them... but it must be multithreaded, each thread scan a single file and updates some list and finally you can only have three of these file scanning threads running at the same time...
    Quote "To avoid having too many threads competing for the system resources when there are a lot of files in the directory, we will restrict the number of active Producer threads (active threads are started threads that have not ended yet) during the run time. For this assignment, at any time there should not be more than 3 active Producer threads. If there are already three active Producer threads during the run time, the program should wait until one of them ends to start the next Producer thread."
    I was think about working on it, so that I can strengthen my knowledge in threads...
    I still might do it, just for fun... I don't know yet...
    We will see...

    he thing is, here are three numbers in the call forwarding list, one of them were set up by mistake, and none of them can be deleted.......it brothers me all the time. i already turn it off, but the number list is still there...

    Hello dennis130915 and welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
    The image you have uploaded is unable to be displayed.
    Call Forwarding is a carrier controlled feature. Most likely, the number you see could be for the Voice Mail server.
    It's advised you call your mobile service provider to further assist with this feature.

  • How to find the number of entries in a master data table

    Hi Experts,
    I am trying to find the entries in 0CUSTOMER master data.
    BW>LISTCUBE>Data target: 0CUSTOMER and selected the fields that I need.
    I would like to know how to find the "number of entrees". I tried to run the SUM for a count field, but it is taking forever as there are huge number of records .

    Hi Dev,
    Go to the change/display mode of the info object (0CUSTOMER) in your case. Go to the Master data/Text tab. Here you will find the master data tables according to your settings (P orQ or X or Y). Double click on the table name and it will take you to the SE11 display. From there, you can check the number of records as you do in any transparent table.
    Hope this helps.
