How to customize the SharePoint 2010 search query string parameters

Hi All,
I am trying to redirect default SharePoint search to a custom search results page.
I modified the Search Settings to redirect to the URL that I want.
But my custom search page takes different query string parameters to provide the results.
Eg: SharePoint search passes k=search term when we perform a search. But my custom page needs
test=search term
I would like to pass 'test' instead of 'k' as a query string. Is this possible?
Thanks
Carol

There is no way out of the box to change it.  You could always write your own control that passes the value or inherit from SearchBoxEx web part (if you are using a search center) to pass a different value.  Query String Filter web part won't
help you here I am afraid.  However, wouldn't it be easier just to change your code to take the value that SharePoint passes you?

I don't think there is option for specific site collection or web application, but there is option of enabling developer dashboard on specific master pages and that is one on of the way you could do it.

  • Sharepoint 2010 designer query string parameter

I need detail instructions on creating a customize new form to take parameters from Query string in SP designer 2010.  I follow the direction below but I am not able to edit the new form I created by deleting the list view and delete the controls by
selecting the area in the design view.
    Open SP Designer
go to the list and libraries and open the list
Click on the new form and create a new insert view by creating the name of the form
Open the new form I created
I am not sure how to delete the list view and make that empty, delete the control by selecting the area in the design view
I am not sure how to go to SharePoint control and add the custom list
I am not sure how to add the parameter field to get the comments form the query string.
    Renee W

    Hi Renee,
Using SharePoint designer 2010 to create new form for a list, it would be more convenient to use Design view. We can directly select and modify the control in the form UI.
To delete anything in the form, you just need to place your cursor to make it selected, then use right-click menu or Backspace button on keyboard to remove it. As well as control in the form
To add control, go to Design tab under Data View Tools > Actions > Insert Control.
To add data view based on other lists, you could place your cursor to somewhere blank the area, then go to Insert tab > Data View.
To use Parameter field, please go to Options tab under Data View Tools > Parameters.
If you cannot see the Data View Tools, try click Save button and then place your cursor somewhere in the list web part.

  • SharePoint 2010 Search "Did You Mean" | How does it work?

My customer has raised a concern that "Did you mean" functionality works inconsistently and issue is explained as below:
    1. When I search for misspelled word such as "Maketting" , search page displays the option "Did you mean ""Marketting"?
    2. When I search for another misspelled word "Marktng", I get no result and no "Did you mean" option.
I believe there is a dictionary which maintains the mapping between misspelled word and the correct words but I was unable to track the location whether it is in database or a file system. Has anyone faced this issue and know the solution? Below article
talks about a "Dictionary lexicon" but not sure about the location in SharePoint 2010 farm.

    Hi Deepak,
“Do you mean” functionality is enabled by selecting Query Suggestions in Search Box web part.
Suggestions are automatically built based on what search results are actually clicked on. It takes 6 clicks within a year for SharePoint to add a suggestion.
However, if an administrator needs to add a suggestion manually this can be done using the SharePoint 2010 Management Shell (PowerShell).
I recommend to use PowerShell to check all the suggestions in the Search Service Application, and then remove the one that you do not need.
    $ssa=Get-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication
    Get-SPEnterpriseSearchQuerySuggestionCandidates -SearchApp $ssa
Remove a suggestion, such as “Marketting”:
    $ssa=Get-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication
    Remove-SPEnterpriseSearchLanguageResourcePhrase -SearchApplication $ssa -Language En-Us -Type QuerySuggestionAlwaysSuggest -Identity "
    Marketting "

    Hi Raghuramk,
is the web service is a search query web service? if yes, i suppose sharepoint 2013 already deprecated,
    Search Query web service
Description: The Search Query web service is deprecated in SharePoint 2013.
In SharePoint Server 2010, the Search Query web service exposes the SharePoint Enterprise Search capabilities to client applications. This enables you to access search results from client and web applications outside the context of a SharePoint site.
Reason for change: The Search Query web service is deprecated because the client object model (CSOM) and a new REST-based web service are available for developing Office-wide extensibility scenarios. The CSOM exposes the same functionality
as the Search Query web service, and a larger set of functionality for stand-alone client applications.

  • How to populate a sharepoint 2010 list from the active directory. How to populate a sharepoint 2010 list with all sharepoint user profiles

How to populate a sharepoint 2010 from the active directory.
I want a list of all the computers in the active directory,
    another one with all users.
I want also to populate a sharepoint 2010 list from the sharepoint user profiles.
    Thanks
    sz

    While
the contacts list is usually filled out for contacts that are outside the company, there are times when you would use a contacts list to store internal and external resources.  Wouldn’t it be nice if you didn’t have to re-type your internal contacts’
information that are already in the system?  Now you can with a little InfoPath customization on the contacts list.
    Here’s our plan:
Create the contacts list, and open in InfoPath
Create a data connection to the User Profile web service
Customize the form adding some text, a people picker and a button
Create InfoPath rules that will populate the contact fields from the user fields in the User Profile store
Let’s get going!  Before we begin, make sure you have InfoPath 2010 installed locally on your computer.  I also want to give credit Laura
Rogers and Darvish Shadravan’s book Using
Microsoft InfoPath 2010 with Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Step by Step.  I know it looks like a lot of steps, but it’s easy once you get the hang of it.
So obviously we need a contacts list.  If you don’t already have one, go to the SharePoint site where it will live, and create a contacts list.
From the list, click the List tab on the ribbon, then click Customize form:
So now we have our form open in InfoPath 2010.  Let’s add our elements to the form.
Above all the fields, let’s add some text instructing users what to do with the the field we’re about to add (.e.g To enter an existing user’s information, choose the user below).
Insert a people picker control by clicking the Person/Group Picker control in the Controls section of the ribbon.  This will add a column to the contacts list called group.
Below the people picker, insert a button control from the same section of the ribbon as above.  With the button still highlighted, click the Control Tools|Properties tab on the ribbon.
Then in the Label box, change the text to something more appropriate to our task (e.g. Click here to load user data!).
You can drag the button control a little larger to account for the text.
We should end up with something like this:
Before we can populate the fields with user data, we need to create a connection to the User Profile Service.
Add a data connection to the User Profile Service
Click the Data tab on the ribbon, and click the option From Web Service, and From SOAP Web Service.
For the location, enter the URL of your SharePoint site in the following format – http://<site url>/_vti_bin/UserProfileService.asmx?WSDL.  Click Next.
Note - for the URL, it can be any SharePoint site URL, not just to the site where your list is.
For the operation, choose GetUserProfileByName.  Click Next.
Click Next on the next two screens.
On the final screen, uncheck the box for “Automatically retrieve data when form is opened”. This is because we are going to retrieve the data when the button is clicked, also for performance reasons.
Now we need to wire up the actions on our button to populate the fields with the information for the user in the people picker control.
Tell the form to read the user from the people picker control
Click the Home tab on the ribbon.
Click the button control we created, and under the Rules section of the ribbon, click Manage Rules. Notice the pane appear on the far right.
In the Rules pane, click New –> Action. Change the name to something like “Query and load user data”.
Leave the condition to default (none – rule runs when button is clicked).
Click the Add button next to “Run these actions:”, and choose “Set a field’s value”.
For Field, click the button on the right to load the select a field dialog.  Click the Show advanced view on the bottom.  At the top, click the drop down and choose the GetUserProfileByName
(Secondary) option.  Expand myFields and queryFields to the last option and highlightAccountName.  Click ok.
For Value, click the formula icon. On the formula screen, click the Insert Field or Group button. Again click the show advanced view link, but this time leave the data
connection as Main. Expand dataFields, then mySharePointListItem_RW.  At the bottom you should see a folder called group (the people picker control we just added to the form).  Expand this, then pc:Person,
and highlightAccountId.  Click Ok twice to get back to the Rules pane.
If we didn’t do this and just queried the user profile service, it would load the data of the currently logged in user.  So we need to tell the form what user to load the data for.  We take the AccountID field from the people
picker control and inject into the AccountName query field of the User Profile Service data connection.
Load the user profile service information for the chosen user
Click the Add button next to “Run these actions:”, and choose Query for data.
In the popup, for Data connection, click the one we created earlier – GetUserProfileByName and clickOk.
We’re closing in on our goal.  Let’s see our progress.  We should see something like this:
Now that we have the user’s data read into the form, we can populate the fields in the contact form.  The number of steps to complete will depend on how many fields you want to populate.  We need to add an action step for
each field.  I’ll show you one example and then you will just repeat the steps for the other fields.  Let’s update the Job Title field.
Populate the contact form fields with existing user’s data
Click the Add button next to “Run these actions:”, and choose “Set a field’s value”.
For Field, click the button on the right to load the select a field dialog.  Highlight the field Job Title.
For Value, click the formula icon. On the formula screen, click the Insert Field or Group button.  Click the Show advanced view on the bottom. At the top, click the
drop down and choose theGetUserProfileByName (Secondary) option.  Expand the fields all the way down until you see the Value field.  Highlight it but don’t click ok, but click the Filter
    Data button, then Add.
For the first dropdown that says Value, choose Select a field or group.   The value field will be highlighted, but click the field Name field
    under PropertyData.  Click Ok.
In the blank field after “is equal to”, click in the box and choose Type text.  Then type the text Title.
Click ok until you get back to the Manage Rules pane.  The last previous screen will look like this.
We’re going to update common fields that are in the user’s profile, and likely from Active Directory.  You can update fields like first and last name, company, mobile and work phone number, etc.  For the other fields, the
steps are the same except the Field you choose to update from the form, and the very last step where you enter the text will change.  Here’s what the rules look like when we’re done:
We’re all done, good work!  You can preview the form and try it now.  Click Ctrl+Shift+B to preview the form.  Once you’re satisfied, you can publish the form back to the library.  Click File –> Quick
Publish.  Once it’s done, you will get confirmation:
Now open your form in SharePoint.  From the contact list, click Add new item.  Type in a name, and click the button and watch the magic happen!

  • Sharepoint 2010 search service from C# web service and Powershell - passing credentials to search

    Good morning everyone,
I really need your expert help about the following issue. I ve developed a web service in C#. Its core code has a Powershell script inside which makes a call to SharePoint 2010 search service to make some search queries, and returns some URL of some files.
In Powershell code I make connection to SharePoint search service using the Farm Admin account. This system works, but given results are not filetered by the user using the web service (I remember you I m using the Farm admin account in PS code)
How can I use user account to make some queries ? How can I filter search results by user ? In Powershell code I put username and password of Farm Admin account and I know them because I m the farm administrator, but
what about if I want to pass Powershell code some other user credentials ? Of course I cannot know his credential ..  Can I do it , in which way ?
Any help is really appreciated !
    Gae

Hi Gae, if you are using web services, you shouldn't need to add a SharePoint DLL to your project. I would advise against using C# -> PS -> Web Service Call -> PS -> C# if you could go straight C# -> Web Service -> C#.
Anyways, back to the matter at hand. Do you know what type of authentication your SharePoint server is running? Is it direct NTLM, NTLM over Kerberos, Claims, or something different?
The following article provides the various types of impersonation available in SharePoint:

  • How to Customize the Message "No Row Returned" from a Report

    Hi,
I've been trying to customize the Message "No Row Returned" from a Report.
First i followed the instructions in Note:183131.1 -
How to Customize the Message "No Row Returned" from a Report
But of course the OWA_UTIL.REDIRECT_URL in this solution did not work (in a portlet) and i found the metalink document 228620.1 which described how to fix it.
So i followed the "fix" in the document above and now my output is,..
"Portlet 38,70711 responded with content-type text/plain when the client was requesting content-type text/html"
So i search in Metalink for the above and come up with,...
    Bug 3548276 PORTLET X,Y RESPONDED WITH CONTENT-TYPE TEXT/PLAIN INSTEAD OF TEXT/HTML
And i've read it and read it and read it and read it and can't make heads or tails of what it's saying.
Every "solution" seems to cause another problem that i have to fix. And all i want to do is customize the Message "No Row Returned" from a Report. Please,...does anyone know how to do this?

My guess is that it only shows the number of rows it has retrieved. I believe the defailt is for it to only retrieve 50 rows and as you page through your report it retrieves more. So this would just tell you how many rows was retireved, but probably not how many rows the report would contain if you pages to the end. Oracle doesn't really have a notion of total number of rows until the whole result set has been materialized.

    Hi Madhu,
It isn't possible (out of the box) to restore a production to a development site without the content.
If you're happy with restoring the content, it's quite easy to backup a SharePoint farm and then restore only a site (form the farm backup) to a development farm.
Have a look at these forum posts for more info (in the first link, I gave an example script):

    Hi Siva,
We could execute the command below to view Administrator Audit Logging settings:
    Get-AdminAuditLogConfig
If it is not enabled, please run the command below:
    Set-AdminAuditLogConfig -AdminAuditLogEnabled $True
In addition, here are some references for you to utilize this feature:

  • Preset default value of DropDown based on Content Type selection in the SharePoint 2010 library

    Hi,
I have three site content types (Admin, Technical & Well) derived from base content type "Base" and added this content types to "Documents" library. I also have one site column "Category"(Dropdown) with values (Admin, Technical
& Well) which is available in all the content types.
Now, when i try to create a document based on "Admin" content type then "Category" value should be preset to "Admin", similarly when i select "Technical" content type then "Category" should be preset to "Technical"
    and same with "well".
Can some one provide me how i can achieve this?
I am working in the SharePoint 2010 environment.
    Regards,
                                          Chakradhar

My understanding is that , you have to display the category in all the content types.
So in that case create a content type like
Create a base content type -- with column category.
Create a Admin content type based on base content type as parent. By default ,the category column is available in admin content.
Create a Technical content type based on base content type as parent. By default ,the category column is available in Technical content type.
Create a Well content type based on base content type as parent. By default ,the category column is available in Well content type.
Do you want to create using sharepoint ui or code(visual studio)?

  • How to limit the number of search results returned by oracle text

    Hello All,
I am running an oracle text search which returned the following error to my java program.
    ORA-20000: Oracle Text error:
DRG-51030: wildcard query expansion resulted in too many terms
    #### ORA-29902: Fehler bei der Ausführung von Routine ODCIIndexStart()
    ORA-20000: Oracle Text error:
DRG-51030: wildcard query expansion resulted in too many terms
java.sql.SQLException: ORA-29902: Fehler bei der Ausführung von Routine ODCIIndexStart()
    ORA-20000: Oracle Text error:
DRG-51030: wildcard query expansion resulted in too many terms
    at oracle.jdbc.dbaccess.DBError.throwSqlException(DBError.java:169)
When i looked up the net, one suggestion that was given is to narrow the wildcard query, which i cannot in my search page. Hence I am left with the only alternative of limiting the number of results returned by oracle text search query.
Please let me know how to limit the number of search results returned by oracle text so that this error can be avoided.
    Thanks in advance
    krk

    Hi,
If not set explicitly, the default value for WILDCARD_MAXTERMS is 5000. This is set as a wordlist preference. This means that if your wildcard query matches more than 5000 terms the message is returned. Exceeding that would give the user a lot to sift through.
My suggestion: trap the error and return a meaningful message to the user indicating that the search needs to be refined. Although it is possible to increase the number of terms before hitting maxterms (increase wildcard_maxterms preference value for your wordlist), 5000 records is generally too much for a user to deal with anyway. The search is not a good one since it is not restricting rows adequately. If it happens frequently, get the query log and see the terms that are being searched that generate this message. It may be necessary to add one or more words to a stoplist if they are too generic.
Example: The word mortgage might be a great search term for a local business directory. It might be a terrible search term for a national directory of mortgage lenders though (since 99% of them have the term in their name). In the case of the national directory, that term would be a candidate for inclusion in the stoplist.
Also remember that full terms do not need a wildcard. Search for "car %" is not necessary and will give you the error you mentioned. A search for "car" will yield the results you need even if it is only part of a bigger sentence because everything is based on the token. You may already know all of this, but without an example query I figured I'd mention it to be sure.
As for limiting the results - the best way to do that is to allow the user to limit the results through their query. This will ensure accurate and more meaningful results for them.

  • Content parsing of the sharepoint 2010 doc library documents

Can we parse the content of document(word, excel, ppt, pdf) which is uploaded to the SharePoint 2010 library.
My requirement is to check that if there is any word (which is sensitive) and matches to my regexp should be blocked while adding the item or updating the item in the library.
Is there any out of the box feature available to parse the content or how can we do it pro-grammatically.

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you want to check the document content when item adding or updating.
We can create an Event Receiver for the document library and we can use Open XML framework to read documents in
    ItemAdding and ItemUpdating methods.
