How to deal exception using try{}catch{}

I don't know which is a good way from catch a exception and throw a exception,
I means that how to use exception in java,catch ? throw?

Presumably you are not asking the same thing as here...
http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?thread=461313&forum=9&message=2114037
You catch an exception with code that looks like the following...
    try
      String s = null;
      int i = s.length();  // This throws an exception
    catch(NullPointerException e)
      // Do something
You throw an exception with the following...
    if (<some condition>)
       throw new Exception("Something bad happened");

  • How to use Try Catch Block in ABAP Like JAVA

    Hi Experts,
       I am using BAPI to post MIGO in one of my application. If the MIGO is successfully gets posted then BAPI returns no message, but if there is some error in posting then it returns an error message. Now I want to print that error message in catch block by calling method RAISE_ERROR_MESSAGE. How to use try catch block in ABAP. Please suggest with example.
    Thanks and Regards.
    Vaibhav Tiwari.

    Hi Vaibhav
    You may not catch exceptions returned by function module using try endtry block.
    It works well with the exception returned by methods.
    In case of function modules or BAPI what u can do is to check sy-subrc returned and give message accordingly. If it returns a structure like bapireturn then display message returned.
    in case of exception returned by a method,  do it like this...
    data: excep type cx_root.
    data: v_str type string.
    try.
    *any method call or division by zero (for ex)
    catch cx_root into excep.
    endtry.
    if  excep is not initial.
    CALL METHOD   excep->if_message~get_text
      receiving
        RESULT = v_str.
    endif.
    *display the value returned in v_str on screen

  • Do I always need to use try/catch? [ newbie ]

    Hi,
    I have a method called methodOne that throws ExceptionXXX, and another method called methodTwo that uses methodOne and also throws ExceptionXXX.
    public static methodOne() throws ExceptionXXX
    Does methodTwo need to use try/catch to catch ExceptionXXX from methodOne, ( like the following code )
    public static methodTwo() throws ExceptionXXX
    try
    methodOne();
    catch( ExceptionXXX theException )
    throw new ExceptionXXX;
    or it isn't necessary ( like this code )?
    public static methodTwo() throws ExceptionXXX
    methodOne();
    Thanks for the help,
    Andre

    Hi,
    if you call a mthod w/ a throws declaration you hace two possibilities:
    1. catch the Exception
    2. pass the Exception by adding a throws declaration to the calling method
    So, in your case the second example is a valid way to handle the Exception.

  • How to run exception using JSP?

    How to run exception using JSP?

    Why would you need the <%%> between the if else blocks? Even if you attempt to write some data within the blocks in java, you will still get an error. For example, this is illegal:
    if(done)
        System.out.println(true);
    System.out.println("Hello World");
    else
        System.out.println(false);
    }The compiler is expecting the 'else' to be directly after the body of the if. If it encounters anything else, it will complain. So you cannot do this in jsp either, regardless if it's a different technology, it's the same compiler.

    when i put this code inside try catch block as below , it generates error and don't accept it

    the error message is "Syntax error, PErmission vaiolation or other nonspecific error"
    do you know is there any problem using TRY catch insdie OLEDB command ?
    Thanks ,
    Ahmed Salah

    Hi Ahmed,
    According to your description, if an error raised that fails the package, then you want the package to continue execute.
    To achieve this requirement, we can use Integration Services (SSIS) Event Handlers that we can create custom event handlers for an OnError event when an error occurs to continue processing rest of the package. For more details, please refer
    to the following blog:
    http://visakhm.blogspot.in/2013/03/error-handling-in-ssis-loops.html
    If there are any other questions, please feel free to ask.

  • Doubt on try/catch exception object

    why it is not advisable to catch type exception in try catch block. Its confusing me. If i catch exception object then it will show whatever exception occured.
    btw, i was just go through duke stars how it works and saw this
    http://developers.sun.com/forums/top_10.jsp
    Congrats!

    Because there are many different kinds of Exception. If you have some specific local strategy for dealing with a particular excepion then you should be using a specific catch block.
    If you don't then you should allow the expection to end the program, and ideally you should deal with all the expceptions in one top-level handler, so you should throw, rather than catch the exceptions in your methods. Often at the outer most level of the program or thread you will actually catch Throwable (not just Exception) to deal with any unanticipated problems in a general kind of way.
    Also, you should be keeping track of what exceptions might be thrown, so that rather than using Exception in a throws clause or catch block, you should use the particular exceptions. Exceptions, generally, indicate a recoverable error that you really ought to be recovering from rather than just printing a stacktrace.
    That's why exceptions are treated differently from runtime errors.

  • Can we have try/catch in a static block in a class?

    hi All
    i have a question about put a try/catch block in a static block in a class to catch exceptions that maybe thrown from using System.xxxx(). in my custom class, i have a static block to initialize some variables using System.xxx(). in case of any error/exception, i need to be able to catch it and let the caller know about it. i tried to put a try/catch block in the static block, and tried to rethrow the exception. but it is not allowed, how would i handle situation like this? thanks for your help and advise in advance.

    You could just swallow the exception inside try/catch
    block, and instead of throwing it out, just set a
    static variable to allow checking from outside
    whether the initialization succeeded, or check within
    the constructor / methods of this class for
    successful initialization, and throw the exception
    then. You could even save that exception in a static
    variable for later.Ouch, ouch, you're hurting my brain. This would allow someone to ignore a (presumably) fatal error. Throw a RuntimeException as indicated. You can wrap a checked exception in an unchecked one if need be.

  • How to add Exception handling in Oracle Business rules Function

    Hello,
    We use to have good number of business rules in our application. So we need to have some functions in BR Composite.
    Can some one let me know how to handle exception in Oracle business rules exception( Regular try catch will not compile)
    is there any way please let me know.

    Why aren't you using por_custom_pkg.custom_validate_req_line to add extra validations.
    Ensure that profile POR: Enable Requisition Line Customization is set to Yes if you were to use po_custom_pkg for Requisition line validations.
    OAF calls por_custom_pkg at various points depending upon the values in Profile Options:-
    POR: Enable Req Distribution Customization
    POR: Enable Req Header Customization
    POR: Enable Requisition Line Customization

  • Try-catch, new to java

    Anyone know how to effectivly exit a try catch statement if the exception is thrown? Heres this code I'm working with:
    public void create(){
         textCheck1 = textField1.getText();
         try{
           intCheck = Integer.parseInt(textCheck1);
         catch(IllegalArgumentException nfe) {
           System.out.println("NumberFormatException: Level must be a number between 1-70");
         if(intCheck>70){
             throw new NumberFormatException("NumberFormatException: Level must be a number between 1-70");
         else{
           TextArea.setText("Character Successfully Created");
           if(button1.isSelected()){
           System.out.println("Character: \n"+"Name: "+textField2.getText()+"\n"+"Job: "+box.getSelectedItem()+"\n"+"Level: "+textField1.getText()+"\n"+"Gender: Male"+"\n"+"Heroic: "+checkBox.isSelected()+"\n");
           else if(button2.isSelected()){
           System.out.println("Character: \n"+"Name: "+textField2.getText()+"\n"+"Job: "+box.getSelectedItem()+"\n"+"Level: "+textField1.getText()+"\n"+"Gender: Male"+"\n"+"Heroic: "+checkBox.isSelected()+"\n");
        }the way this is set up, when the catch block throws the exception the if-else executes anyway and the results are printed. If the string isn't formated correctly I want to throw the exception and exit the method. please help. thanks.

    1) You're catching IllegalArgumentException instead of NumberFormatException. The catch would never be entered.
    2) You're ignoring/swallowing the exception and doing a 'dumb' sysout instead of throwing the (new) exception.
    Fix your code as follows:
    try{
        intCheck = Integer.parseInt(textCheck1);
    } catch (NumberFormatException nfe) {
        throw new NumberFormatException("NumberFormatException: Level must be a number between 1-70");
    } Exactly the way as you did in the subsequent if block.
    By the way, if you consider yourself new to Java, why don't you make use of the 'New to Java' forum? Here we expect a bit more from you.

  • Some basic questions how to handle Exceptions with good style

    Ok I have two really basic Exception questions at once:
    1. Until now I always threw all exceptions back all the way to my main method and it always worked well for me but now I am sitting at a big project where this method would explode the programm with throwings of very many exceptions in very many methods. So I would like to know if there is a more elegant solution.
    2. What do I do with exceptions that will never occur?
    Lets say I have a method like this:
    void main() {calculate();}
    void calculate()
    sum(3,5);
    void sum(int a,int b)
    MathematicsA.initialise("SUM"); // throws AlgorithmNotFoundException, will never occur but has to be handled
    }So what is the most elegant way?:
    h4. 1. Ignore because it will not happen
    void sum(int a,int b)
    try {MathematicsA.initialise("SUM");}
    catch(AlgorithmNotFoundException) {}
    }h4. 2. Print stacktrace and exit
    void sum(int a,int b)
    try {MathematicsA.initialise("SUM");}
    catch(AlgorithmNotFoundException e)
    e.printStackTrace();
    System.exit();
    }h4. 3. throw it everywhere
    void main() throws AlgorithmNotFoundException, throws ThousandsOfOtherExceptions  {}
    void calculate()  throws AlgorithmNotFoundException, throws HundretsOfOtherExceptions
    sum(3,5);
    void sum(int a,int b) throws AlgorithmNotFoundException
    MathematicsA.initialise("SUM");
    }h4. 4. Create special exceptions for every stage
    void main() throws MainParametersWrongException
    try {calculate();}
    catch(Exception e)
      throw new MainParametersWrongException();
    void calculate()  throws SumInternalErrorException
    try {sum(3,5);}
    catch (SumInternalErrorException)    {throw new CalculateException();}
    void sum(int a,int b) throws SumInternalErrorException
    try
    MathematicsA.initialise("SUM");
    } catch (AlgorithmNotFoundException e) {
    throw new SumInternalErrorException();
    }P.S.: Another problem for me is when a method called in a constructor causes an Exception. I don't want to do try/catch everytime I instantiate an object..
    Example:
    public class MySummation()
         Mathematics mathematics;
         public MySummation()
                 mathematics.initialise("SUM"); // throws AlgorithmNotFoundException
         void sum(int x,int y)
              return mathematics.doIt(x,y);
    }(sorry for editing all the time, I was not really sure what I really wanted to ask until i realised that I had in fact 2 questions at the same time, and still it is hard to explain what I really want to say with it but now the post is relatively final and I will only add small things)

    I`m not a guru, but give my point of view. First of all, the first way is rude. You shouldn`t use try with empty catch. "rude" isn't the word I'd use to describe it. Think about what happens if an exception is thrown. How will you know? Your app fails, and you have NO indication as to why. "stupid" or "suicidal" are better descriptions.
    Then for the second way, I`ll reccomend for you use not printStackTrace(); , but use special method for it:
    public void outputError (Exception e) {
    e.printStackTrace();
    }It`ll be better just because if in future you`d like to output error message instead of stack of print it on GUI, you`ll need change only one method, but not all 'try' 'catch' statements for changing e.printStackTrace(); with the call of new output method.I disagree with this. Far be it from me to argue against the DRY principle, but I wouldn't code it this way.
    I would not recommend exiting from a catch block like that. It's not a strategy for recovery. Just throw the exception.
    Then, the third way also good, but I suppose you should use throws only if the caller method should know that called method have a problem (for example, when you read parametrs from gui, so if params are inccorect, main method of programm should know about it and for example show alert window)."throw it everywhere"? No, throw it until you get to an appropriate handler.
    If you're writing layered applications - and you should be - you want to identify the layer that will handle the exception. For example, if I'm writing a web app with a view layer, a service layer, and a persistence layer, and there's a problem in the persistence tier, I'd let the service layer know what the persistence exception was. The service layer might translate that into some other exception with some business meaning. The view layer would translate the business exception into something that would be actionable by the user.
    And in all other cases I suppose you should use the fourth way. So I suppose it`s better to combine 2,3,4 ways as I have mentioned above.I don't know that I'd recommend special exceptions for every layer. I'd reuse existing classes where I could (e.g., IllegalArgumentException)
    Sorry, I can give you advice how to avoid problem with try-catch in constructor. :-(You shouldn't catch anything that you can't handle. If an exception occurs in a constructor that will compromise the object you're trying to create, by all means just throw the exception. No try/catch needed.
    You sound like you're looking for a single cookie cutter approach. I'd recommend thinking instead.

  • How to handle Exception in Forms??

    Hi,
    We have a customer facing application...self-service kinda things actually with self registration, forgot password/ username and edit profile. We are using SIM forms for all of these. Now as per requirement we need to call some web services as backend validation in the forms. we want that if any exception is generated while calling these web services or general exceptions that SIM thrown (like xpress exception etc..) ....the user should redirected to other page containg some custom message because actual exception message is completely useless for user. i tried to use try/catch in jsp and other fundas of exception handling in java but nothing works. If anyone has any suggestion or any prior experience please share. Any pointer will be helpful.
    We are using SIM-SPE 7.1 . if someone has experience about exception handling in SPE it will be great otherwise SIM forms exception handling will also work. we can corellate the things in SPE!!!
    Thanks in advance!

    Bhavna,
    create a when-custom-item-event handler on the Forms Bean Container
    example:
    DECLARE
         eventName varchar2(30) := :system.custom_item_event;
         eventValues ParamList;
         eventValueType number;
         tempString varchar2(100);
    BEGIN
    IF (eventName=BEAN_ERROR_EVENT') THEN eventValues := get_parameter_list(:system.custom_item_event_parameters);
                   get_parameter_attr(eventValues,'ERROR_MESSAGE',eventValueType, tempString);          MsgBox.Show(MsgBox.STOP_ALERT,tempString);
    END IF;
    END;
    This looks for an event named BEAN_ERROR_EVENT and there for a message ERROR_MESSAGE.
    In the Bean add the following code:
    public static final ID pErrorMessage = ID.registerProperty("ERROR_MESSAGE");
    public static final ID eErrorEvent = ID.registerProperty("BEAN_ERROR_EVENT");
    private void dispatchErrors(String message)
    log(message);
    try{
    CustomEvent ce = new CustomEvent(m_handler, eErrorEvent);
    m_handler.setProperty(pRwAuthMessage,pErrorMessage);
    dispatchCustomEvent(ce);
    catch (Exception e)
    e.printStackTrace();
    To handle Bean errors:
    try{
    catch (Exception e){
    dispatchErrors(e.getMessage());
    finally {
    This know publishes the error message to Forms where you can handle it the way you want.

  • How to write exception information into a txt file??

    i got a program which generate lots of exception information. its hard to see from the screen, is there any way to make the input into some txt file?
    when i use
    try

    // to do something here and make the output into a txt file?
    }

    depending upon the version of jdk being used one of the options will be to fetch the StackTraceElement array and writing each of the element using the standard file io operation
                StackTraceElement[] elements = ex.getStackTrace();
                int noOfElements = elements.length;
                for (int i=0; i<noOfElements;i++)

  • Doubt try/catch/finally

    Hi all
    Say i have following program:
    try {
    line1.   functioncall()
    line2.    .....
    line3.    .....
    catch(..) {
    print error
    finally{
    System.out.println("In finally");
    }As per my understanding if there is some error in try block , then control will skip to catch and then to finally.
    And other way, if there is no error then all lines in try block will be executed and control has to go to finally block.
    And i see that there is no error (i have used try catch inside line1 function call also)
    Now I am facing this problem.
    In try block, line 1 is executed and getting into finally and there is also no error so it has skipped catch block. And in try block line2 and line 3 are skipped.
    Can anybody tell me why is it so.
    thanks
    Ravi

    What might be the problem?Sunspots. Not enough fiber. Government conspiracy.
    These are just guesses, which is all we can do unless you read and obey the following:
    Please post a short, concise, executable example of what you're trying to do. This does not have to be the actual code you are using. Write a small example that demonstrates your intent, and only that. Wrap the code in a class and give it a main method that runs it - if we can just copy and paste the code into a text file, compile it and run it without any changes, then we can be sure that we haven't made incorrect assumptions about how you are using it.
    Post your code between [code] and [/code] tags. Cut and paste the code, rather than re-typing it (re-typing often introduces subtle errors that make your problem difficult to troubleshoot). Please preview your post when posting code.
