How to disable Show Package Contents option?

One of the kids at the school I manage figured out how to unlock any program I've disabled via Workgroup Manager by editing a certain string in the info.plist file found within the packages of all applications. So I would like to remove the "Show Package Contents" option from the contextual menu in the Finder on all of the kids' machines. Is there perhaps some terminal command I could push out to the MacBooks via Apple Remote Desktop? Some hidden trick in Workgroup Manager? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Unfortunately, you can't remove it (However you could rename it to something else). Here is a workaround to your problem.
1. Make sure all applications you want to manage are in a folder that your users have read only access to (such as /Applications).
2. By default, any properly installed app will have permissions root:admin rwxrwxr-x. If not, make sure they do.
3. In the terminal cd into /Applications/___.app/Contents/MacOS
4. Run the command: sudo chmod o-r _____ (Fill in the blank with the name of the app without the .app extention).
Here is the logic behind this. As long as the apps are in a folder the users only have read access to, such as /Applications, the only way they can edit that info.plist file is to copy the app to their home directory and then edit it. You are now preventing this by taking away their read (and therefore copy) ability to the most important part of the application, the executable. Now they will still be able to execute the app but not read/copy it. If they try, they will need to provide an admin code.

  • How do i "show package contents" on .webtemplate files that have arrow

    Hi,
    Quick question:
How do i "show package contents" on .webtemplate files that have a small arrow attached on the file icon. Its a template a downloaded from 11mystics.com (free). When i right click the icon there is no "show package contents" available on the drop down menu....
    Thanx!

When you bring up the contextual menu for the icon, choose "Show Original". This will take you to where the original file is and you should be able to "Show Package Contents" on it.

  • Show Package Content option not available in Ctrl+click

    Hi,
I just installed Mozilla's Thunderbird email SW (v. 1.5.0.5) and I'm trying to import the mail I had accumulated previously in Mail 2.1 (this is under OS X Tiger 10.4.7, sadly running on a pretty old G4 400 MHz, AGP Graphics). The instructions from Mozilla seem pretty simple:
    <<How do I import e-mail messages from mail.app (MacOS X)?
Go to ~/Library/Mail/ and root out the .mbox files in the finder. These are actually OSX packages. Select Show Package Contents and a new window will open revealing several files including a file named mbox. Copy that file to the subfolder called Local Folders in the folder Mail in your profile folder and rename it to something meaningful. This process needs to be done for each of your mailboxes. Finally start Thunderbird to see the new mail folders.>
Well, I'm also a recent convert to OS X ('twas about time! I was still running OS 9.2.2 less than a month ago!), so I had never heard of "Show Package Contents". It seems that I should be able to see this in the contextual menu when I Ctrl+click (or right-click; I have a multi-button mouse) on the object (the *.mbox folder in this case). But my contextual menu has no such option.
    Any ideas?
    Louis

Hmm... They do look like folders, don't they? Perhaps they were thinking of an earlier release of OS X...
Anyway, what you describe is close but not exactly what I see. Let me describe to make sure the situation is clear: I am in home>Library>Mail>Mailboxes. Inside this, I have a set of *.mbox "folders", each of which contains only two items: an "info.plist" file and a "Messages" folder. The "Messages" folders (within each *.mbox folder) contain individual messages with the .emlx extension.
So the *.mbox "folders" contain no mbox file that I can grab and move (and no index, content.index, of table of contents that you mention). Perhaps these are "hidden"? But I can't find an option anywhere to "Show hidden files".
    Ideas?

  • Where is "Show Package Contents"

I've update my osx into yosemite. Now i want to view application package contents. In earlier version of osx there was a option name "show package contents". But now when i right click on application there has no "show package contents" option.
now how to view the package contents??

I'm having the same issue. I right click on a .pkg installer, and there is no "Show Package Contents" in the contextual menu. The package installs just fine, so it's a proper Installer package.

  • "Show Package Contents" Not Showing

    http://tinypic.com/r/2ajcrgm/7
There is no "show package contents" option when I right click. This screenshot was on a folder. Same with .dmg etc.
    Help?
I do have "Secrets" downloaded (extra preferances thing). Maybe there is something there I hit or turn off?

I think you are confusing what options apply to different file types.
A .dmg is a disk image - you access it by double clicking it and it mounts on your desktop.
Within the .dmg you'll see a .mpkg or a .pkg - the icons look like a 3D box. This can be right clicked (control clicked) and you will see the option to Show Package Contents. (Archive.bom, Archive.pax.gz, Info.plist, PkgInfo, Resources)
Double clicking the .mpkg or .pkg invokes the Installer and installs the resources within the package on to your machine.
    Hope this clarifies things.
    Best Wishes.

  • How do I undo "Show package content"?

I imported a ACVHD file to my mac and select to "Show package content". Now the video files wont import to Final Cut Pro X because it's not seeing the index file (which I have). How do I undo "show package content" or re-package the files? I'm on Mac 10.8. Thanks!
    Amalia

I just wanted to make sure all the video files were there before I deleted them off the flashcard in the camera. Didn't know it would cause a problem until now when I'm trying to import everything to from my external hard drive to final cut pro... :-\ Is viewing packge content an irriversable thing? I just assumed there would be a hide content option since there was a show contnet option but clearly wasn't the case. I did not move or delete any files. The index file is clearly there as well as the mts files and cpi files...
Here's  ascreen shot of the file structure. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

  • "Show package contents"-how to see easier

    Hi
I have many  avchd files in their proper folders saved on a drive. Whenever I want to look at the video and I'm not in FCPX, I have to click on 'AVCHD' and choose "Show package contents", then do the same with BDMV to finally see the files.
Any way to skip having to do the "Show package contents" routine? And is the solution only in general or can one choose what to always 'show contents'? A bit of a stupid question, but...

Your workaround is interesting, but you'd think there would be a general way to stop having to click 'Show package contents' for anything. Snow leopard I didn't have to do that, so can't see why in Mavs there's not a way to stop it 'bundling'.
    Thanks again!

My guess is people were going into the structure and messing it up by moving things. Then, they complained that they couldn't view/download their movies. But, who knows?

  • Photos Missing from Original's Show Package Content

Because I still have some photos with the ! over them when clicked, I decided to make a new library with the originals from the iPhoto Show Package Contents.
I moved the existing library folder to the desktop and opened the library package with a control-click, clicked on "Originals". However, when I looked at the contents of "Originals" that the menu listed, the more recent additions to the library where not displayed in the menu.
I placed the library back in "Finder/Pictures" and opened iPhoto again. Sure enough, the most recent photos that I had added to the library appeared in iPhoto.
How can I get those most recently added photos to display in the originals so that I can create a new library?
Oh yes, I did not make any changes at any time!
    Thanks for your help.

If you want to create a new library with all of the photos in your current library download and use iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the library. This method will keep the metadata intact. Here's how:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be untouched for further attempts at fixing or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
Control click on one of the photos that you can't fine in the Originals folder and select "Show File" in the contextual menu. You will be taken to the folder that contains the photo. If the photo is displayed you can check to see where it's located.
If you experience the "!" again there are two methods to recover:
Try the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all options.
    Fix #2
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:

  • "Show Package Contents" not available

    Hi all
I just downloaded the Common Criteria Toolset from here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/commoncriteriatoolsfor105.html
    I use Mac OS X 10.5 on a MacBook PRO 2.4.
I am not able to choose "Show Package Contents" from the Finder by right clicking the file. Instead I have to open the package in Installer.app and let it show the files with cmd-i.
This is not the first package that shows this behaviour. Older packages mostly work fine though.
Can someone enlighten me, what has changed here, or how I get the Finder option back?
    --greg

    Hi,
i might be wrong, but I don't remember ever to have seen this option with installation packages (.pkg), only with installed apps. For a .pkg there's only cmd+i when opened with Installer.app. Maybe "Show Package Contents" existed for pkgs earlier, but that must've been a while ago. At least I can verify that the option is not there, so it's not a problem with your system.

  • I am trying to Show Package contents of iMovie and it freezes at the hr.lprog folder

While doing a virus scan my machine would freeze on the file
    Applications/iMovie/Contents/Resource/hr.lprog/Title-SidewaysDrifting.nib/keyedo bjects.nib.
Bitdefender said to send them the file.
I am able to "Show package contents" of iMovie, and open the Contents and Resources folder. When I try to open the hr.lprog folder, I get the spinning beach vball of death and I have to reboot my machine using the power button.
Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this and how to fix it?
Is the hr.lprog folder just the language files for Croatia? If so, can I safely delete them, or is there more to it?

My guess would be that your hard drive has become corrupt, and the corruption is affecting something about that folder or its contents such that when the Finder tries to display them, it crashes. I would recommend immediatelyrepairing with Disk Utility. Also, if you don't have any backups, now would be a good time to start, before something bad happens.
If repairing the hard drive doesn't work, I would try deleting and reinstalling iMovie.
Also, note that I don't recommend BitDefender. Read my Mac Malware Guide, and if after reading that you want to have anti-virus software, use one of the programs it recommends. BitDefender has performed poorly in my anti-virus software testing, both in the first round and the second round of testing.

  • Window blank when I click "Show Package Contents" in Pictures folder

Long story short, I have two iPhoto libraries - one on an old laptop and one on a new MacBook Air (10.6.4). I have been trying to copy the old iPhoto library from the old laptop to the new laptop (so that I would be able to access both libraries on the new laptop by holding down option when starting iPhoto and selecting one or the other).
I copied the old iPhoto library into the "Pictures" folder on the new laptop. Then I did some ill-advised tidying up (I know, I know, I'm an idiot) in that "Pictures" folder. As I understand it, inside "Pictures", there should be an "iPhoto Library" folder but that has now gone. In fact, there is nothing in "Pictures" at all. When I right click on "Pictures" and select ""Show Package Contents" I get a blank window.
I have the two iPhoto libraries (old and new) elsewhere on my hard drive - in a folder I created in the home directory ("Pictures 2" > "iPhoto Library"). iPhoto can read the two libraries from there no problem. But I cannot drag and drop the libraries into the "Pictures" folder, where they should be, because I get an error message: "You can’t open the application “Pictures” because it may be damaged or incomplete". When I click on "Pictures", it doesn't open in Finder but iPhoto opens up showing whatever library I used last.
Someone on the iPhoto forum suggested that I post this problem here: "That sounds very like the Pictures Folder has had it's Execute bit set and the Mac now thinks it's an application. The solution to this is a trip to the Terminal. Post this here: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1339 and someone will give you the Terminal commands to fix that." So I'm hoping that someone here can help me out!
Let me know if you need any further info. The other thread is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11958853#11958853
    Many thanks.

I'm having the same exact problem. I have an older macbook pro and I was trying to copy the iphoto library to my new imac. I was stupidly messing around with the pictures folder on the comp when things weren't migrating correctly, then it suddenly changed from a folder to a package and I got the same error when I tried to delete. Any suggestions?

  • Mountian lion show package contents

We bought my daughter a macbook pro with Mountain Lion. She has Sims 3. We backed up all of her custom stuff when she had windows 7 prior to this mac. She loaded the Sims games via DVD/CD ROM onto her new mac. We want to put her saved games etc into this folder in Applciations....I can't find how to show package contents? Where  is this now...or are we out of luck to do this.

There's no reason to show package contents. What exactly are you trying to do? Saved games would usually be put into a separate folder most likely in the /Home/Documents/ folder. You don't make any changes to an application's package contents.

  • Show Package Contents in 10.10.1

The option is gone from menu. The problem, I can't extract images from Pages or Keynote.

By default, Pages v5.5.2, Numbers v3.5.2, and Keynote v6.5.2 all write single file format (compressed) documents. These are no longer packages, and thus, the absence of show package contents on the contextual menu. Once you have saved a document from one of these applications, you can revisit the following:
File ▸ Advanced ▸ Change File Type ▸ Package
    File ▸ Save
One you have taken these steps, that default single file format document is now a package format document that allows you access via the show package contents contextual menu item. It is important that you follow the first bullet with the second.
Also, the Package format documents altered in the above manner, are now backwards compatible with Pages v5.2.2 on Mavericks. Otherwise, not.

  • "Show Package Contents" help

Hello, Just got an mac today and Im installing new stuff, well, once i've installed firefox 2 and got it running, I needed to put some files in the install directory (Or, what im assuming in Mac OSX is the "Show Package Contents menu when right clicking"
Anyways, when I try to paste something in there, I well, simply cant, there aint no paste option when I try to right click or do Mac shortcut + V. So i cant install an extra search engine for firefox.
At first I throught this would be because my user account on my mac didnt have sufficent privledges, but im 95% sure the main account im using has "Admin" status.
    So, thanks in advance ^^

    Hi Goldfin,
First of all, Welcome to the  Discussion Forums and congratulations on your new Mac!
"I needed to put some files in the install directory (Or, what im assuming in Mac OSX is the "Show Package Contents menu when right clicking"
I'm not sure of exactly what you are trying to accomplish by copy/paste to the "install directory"?
Firefox will automatically install the add-on search engine for you. Is this perhaps a search engine that is not offered through Firefox's manage search engines function? It sounds as if you have downloaded a seperate file/s for a search engine and are now trying to add it to the browsers search engines list...is this correct?
If you have not, go to the search bar (top right in Firefox browser) and click on the search engine alias that is there which will bring up the pop-up list of installed search engines along with the "manage search engines" option. Click that which will take you to your search engines list. Once there click on the link for "Get more search engines". Find the engine you are looking for and it will install automatically in your search engines list.
Sorry if that is not what you are looking for.
