How to edit deployment descriptor in weblogic 9.0?

Hi ,
I need to edit the values of certain environment variables mentioned in the deployment descriptor of a ejb module.
In weblogic 7,its a straight forward method in which we have the option to edit the deployment descriptor in weblogic console.
But I'm not sure how the same can be done in weblogic 9.0.
Please guide me..!!! its urgent...
Thanks,
Smita

If you want to edit the actual deployment descriptor (ie as a developer) than using any text editor or using an IDE like WebLogic Workshop/Eclipse etc would be the way to go.
If you're trying to change values in an already deployed application, then configuration and tunables can be changed in the admin console. These write the changes to a separate file called a deployment plan. It allows you to change performance and environment settings without disturbing the original EAR file.

  • Clobbered manifest when editing deployment descriptors

I'm running WebLogic server 6.1. I deploy an ear file that consists of one EJB
module (a session bean) and several extra jars, which contain client classes to
other beans and some utility classes. The session bean jar's manifest file includes
a classpath entry listing the extra jars in the ear. However, when I edit some
environment variables in the EJB's deployment descriptors through the console,
this manifest file is replaced and the classpath entry does not appear in the
new manifest. This makes the ear file undeployable. Is this a documented bug?
Is there a fix or workaround?

  • EJB references in deployment descriptors and weblogic heuristic on resolving links

There are two different ways to lookup home interfaces using JNDI.
    1. Query JNDI tree at runtime using some initial context.
    2. Use <ejb-ref> in deployment descriptor for all the refrenced EJBs and then
    use initCtxt.lookup(java:comp/env/BeanHomeName).
The second approach is recommended as most of the EJB vendors resolve these referenced
EJBs at deployment time and it becomes much faster as compare to lookup in JNDI
as EJB refrences or links can bypass querying the JNDI.
Does anyone know if Weblogic (5.1 sp9 or higher) resolves these links at deployment
    time or not?

    Bruce,
Thanks for your prompt reply. We have resorted to using a startup servlet much
like we do in CA. However, we're still faced with the second issue which is related
to not being able to lookup the EJB after it has been included in an EAR file
now. Is there any setting we're missing?
    Thanks

The workaround is to use a handler or read your init params from a

    1. in the constructor

    Hi.
I'm experiencing the same problem, using Weblogic 9.1.
I have an ear file that contains a war file.
Previously, the files were in servlet api 2.3 format (with a DTD). I used the DDConverter tool to update the files, and now I can use the console to change parameters for the web application, but I still can't change paramters for the main application: "This module is defined with DTD based descriptors and cannot be edited using the console.".
Here is the content of the META-INF/application.xml contained in mey ear file:
    <?xml version='1.0' encoding='utf-8'?>

  • How to hot deploy EJB in Weblogic?

    Hi all,
We use Weblogic 10.3 and EJB3.
EJB has been build as ear and deployed in the server. And other deployed modules in server calls that.
But the modification of EJB need to be rebuilt and restart the server.
Does Weblogic support hot deploy for EJB? Do we need plugin or something else for this feature?
    Thanks a lot.

    Hi,
The production redeployment strategy/hot deployment is supported for:
    a. Standalone Web Application (WAR) modules and Enterprise applications (EARs) whose clients access the application via a Web application (HTTP).
    b. Enterprise applications that are accessed by inbound JMS messages from a global JMS destination, or from inbound JCA requests.
    c. All types of Web Services, including conversational and reliable Web Services, but not 8.x Web Services.
Production redeployment is not supported for:
    a. Standalone EJB or RAR modules. If you attempt to use production redeployment with such modules, WebLogic Server rejects the redeployment request. To redeploy such modules, remove their version identifiers and explicitly redeploy the modules.
    b. Applications that use JTS drivers. For more information on JDBC application module limitations, see JDBC Application Module Limitations in Configuring and Managing JDBC for Oracle WebLogic Server.
    c. Applications that obtain JDBC data sources via the DriverManager API; in order to use production redeployment, an application must instead use JNDI to look up data sources.
    d. Applications that include EJB 1.1 container-managed persistence (CMP) EJBs. To use production redeployment with applications that include CMP EJBs, use EJB 2.x CMP instead of EJB 1.1 CMP.
    Please check the below Doc
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E14571_01/web.1111/e13702/redeploy.htm#
    Hope this answers your question!!

  • Weblogic Deployment Descriptor for CMP EJB

    Hi all,
Am new to EJB, CMP. Pls help me how to write deployment descriptors for the CMP EJB for Weblogic.
Give me the list of the Deployment descriptors needed and also pls give me some samples
    thanks in advance
    rgds
    Ravi Bharathi

The easiest way is to go through some tutorial or refer the code samples. If you have installed weblogic, there are examples provided in the weblogic installation folder itself for each type of bean. Basically for cmp you have to provide the table names and mapping between the class variables to db fields in weblogic_cmp_rdbms.xml deployment descriptor.

  • How to deploy *.jar in WebLogic by Hudson and WLST

    Hi everybody!
I have the server (hostname - server0), where:
    1. Developers works. He create the build JAR-files and put this file in special local directory:
    /home/build/test1/jar/ - jar-file for test envorement 1 of weblogic (hostname - server1)
    /home/build/test2/jar/ - jar-file for test envorement 2 of weblogic (hostname - server2)
    2. I have the directories with WLST scripts for deploing the build JAR-files:
2.1. Script files for deploing the jar-files in test envorement 1 of weblogic (hostname - server1)
    /home/build/test1/scripts/deploy.sh
    /home/build/test1/scripts/deploy.py
2.2. Script files for deploing the jar-files in test envorement 2 of weblogic (hostname - server2)
    /home/build/test2/scripts/deploy.sh
    /home/build/test2/scripts/deploy.py
    3. Hudson (Hudson ver. 2.1.2) is intsalled.
Could you please tell me, how to automatic deploy *.jar in WebLogic by Hudson and WLST, if take into consideration the email-notification about problem in deploing?

I've never used WLST inconjunction with Hudson.
What I have done is use Maven to do this.
We have a WebLogic Server Maven Plugin which can perform deployment operations.
Hudson has support for Maven, so you create a Maven project which does the deployment from the project and configure a job using that on Hudson -- if you can get your developer to upload their artifacts to some form of SCM system so Hudson watches for the changes, grabs the new file and does the deployment, that would work.
If you want to use your scripts, then you could perhaps use the Hudson SSH plugin which can execute "shell" scripts on a server. Theoretically here you would create wrapper shell scripts for your WLST execution/script, then configure a Hudson job which executes the scripts. I've never used the plugin so not sure how it is activated, but you could configure a job to run on a periodic basis, and have the wrapper script itself do the check to see if the directory contains a jar/ear file to deploy -- if it does, execute the WLST scripts; if not, simply return.
Let us know how you get on!

  • Deployment descriptor file(portalapp.xml)

    Hi All,
Can you tell me why portalapp.xml is a xml file why cannot it be a .txt or any other ?

In java enterprise edition deployment descriptor denotes how the web or enterprise application should be deployed. It is a directive to the deployment tool regarding the specific configuration requirements that a deployer must fulfill.
XML allows developers to set standards, helps in defining the configurations and the required information  and the sequence as well and easy to parse also.
portalapp.xml ,the deployment descriptor of a PAR file  defines the components and services contained in the PAR, including the initial configuration and the parameters that can be modified by administrators and users. The descriptor also contains configuration information for the entire application.
So considering the close relationship between java and xml,it makes sense to have the deployment descriptors, be it portalapp or ejb-jar.xml or any other deployment descriptor, as xml , as
these parameters and sequence becomes rather unlikely to be maintained as a text file as there has always been a .

I try to add something in weblogic.xml, but the problem is I cannot find weblogic.xml in Jdeveloper.

    Best Regards,

The weblogic.xml file is generated at deploy time if it doesn't exist in your application. To create it specifically in your application at design time for editing, select the appropriate project then the New option, from the New Gallery select General -> Deployment Descriptors -> Weblogic Deployment Descriptor, and in the resulting dialog select the weblogic.xml file. It will be added to the project -> Web Content -> WEB-INF directory.
    Cheers,
