How to edit h.264 clip without re-exporting?

Why is Quicktime Pro unable to open an H.264 clip, allow me to cut out parts, and then just "save" while maintaining the format and tags.
I use Elgato's EyeTV to auto export shows for iPhone, but I want to chop out commercials.. Is there any way else to do this without re-encoding?

Hi,
If you want to save the edited file as .mp4 (not .mov), but you don't want to re-encode, then you have to export with video pass-through option in QuickTime Pro
If you use SimpleMovieX, you just have to do Save, and .mp4 container will be kept by default.

  • How do I delete a clip without every other clip in my timeline moving over?

So i've been editing for hours, and somehow, the first 30 seconds of my movie were screwed up. So now i'm trying to re-edit the first 30 seconds. When i try to delete a clip, the rest of the clips following the deleted one, move over to this empty space. I do not want this to happen!!!!! I want the other clips to stay in the same place!!!! How do I delete a clip without having all the clips after it move over to the deleted space????
    Please help.
    Thank you.

    Hello, richardzulu!
    Welcome to the discussions.
In answer to your question, the clips behind the one you delete must move over to close the gap between the clips, an empty space left by the clip that you deleted. Otherwise, you would have a black/blank part in your movie.
You CAN purposely create a black clip if you wish, but probably you just want the movie to continue as you have created it, leaving out the deleted clip. If your movie is just video, it should work out to be the same once the deleted clip is gone.
However, if you have added some other audio, and not locked it to its corresponding video clip, the timing of the audio to the video will be off. Use the "Advanced" tool to select 'Lock audio clip at playhead' to avoid this. Once the audio is locked to a specific video clip, edits to other clips can be done without separating the audio and video. Occasionally, they still do get misaligned, so you do have to keep checking.
If you really want to keep all the other clips the same without doing anything else, switch to Timeline view, and move the trailing movie over from the clip you want to delete, making sure that the length you move is the same as the clip to be deleted. Then, delete the clip. iMovie will create a black clip in that space and the rest of your clips will remain untouched. However, as I said, the movie will be interupted by this black clip.

  • How to edit videos frame-by-frame and export in H264?

I wish to edit some videos and then export them in H264 so I can use them on a website.
I have tried to edit with iMovie 08 but can only edit second-by-second. I want to edit frame-by-frame ie to the millisecond. And it appears that iMovie 08 does not export in H264.
I have looked at iMovie 11 which has a Precision Editor which would work to edit as I want but for that I would have to upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard which I don't want. It would export H264.
I also have QuickTime Player 7 Pro but that too seems to edit only by the second not by the frame; it does however seem to produce H264
How can I edit these videos precisely and produce H264? Is there another application which would work better (and doesn't cost a fortune).
    Thanks for any ideas

I want to edit frame-by-frame ie to the millisecond.
Am a bit confused by what you say. iMovie and QT 7 Pro are both "frame" level editors. However, some forms of editing are, by their very nature, applied over a range of frames which may be a part of your problem. In addition, since "normal" movies have frames which are spaced apart in the 16 to 42 ms range, your requirement to be able to edit to the nearest millisecond would seem unreasonable and would probably be unsupported for playback purposes without skipping 90+ percent of the frames on most platforms.
And it appears that iMovie 08 does not export in H264.
All of the "Share" and/or "Export" options (except Final Cut XML...) either default to H.264 or allow export to H.264 (or X264 if installed) video compression.
How can I edit these videos precisely and produce H264? Is there another application which would work better (and doesn't cost a fortune).
Difficult to say since you have not given any indication as to what you mean by "editing" here. You could, for instance, edit normal movie clips in a normal manner and then use an application like the JES Deinterlacer to change the playback time reference to achieve an effective 1 millisecond/frame playback rate you seem to want to target even though your platform cannot play every frame during playback.

  • Is there a way to re-compress the audio of a clip without re-exporting the video?

Hey guys, I have 500 clips that took me 2 days to render to ProRes just to find out that the audio is not the right format. What do i do now?
I don't want to have to re-export all those 500 files again and wait 2 more days. Is there a way to run those files through an application (either in compressor or something else) that will re-render the audio in the right format without doing anything to the video?
I know how to swap the audio of a file using QT Player 7 but I only know how to do that one file at a time. Obviously, I wouldn't even think about doing that 500 times... I'll go nuts.
What are my other options? Adobe Media Encoder? MPEG Streamclip? VLC? Anything at all?
    Any help is much appreciated

Well this workflow should work but I don't know if there might be problems down the road.
Bring all your prores files with the problem audio into compressor.  Apply the audio 48k16 bit preset to them.  This will create individual aiff files with fcp friendly settings.
Bring the resulting aiffs into fcp.  Select the video qt and audio aiff in the browser for one clip and control click on one of them and choose merge clip.  This should create new clips with the good audio as channels 3 and 4 (assuming the original files have 2 channels of audio).
You should then be able to edit the merged clip into the timeline and by just patching channels 3 and 4 (the 48k16bit audio tracks)  into your timeline and unpatching channels 1 and 2.  , you should not need to render the audio.
Try testing this workflow on one clip and see if everything works before doing all of the clips.
If any of this is not clear or you need help with any of this, post back.
Frankly, you might be just as easy and safer to reconvert all the clips with the audio enabled to 48k16bit in compressor.    You could also edit each clip into it's own sequence, replace the ng audio with aiffs made as I described above and then export reference quicktimes to edit with.

  • Wow ... How to edit Event Browser Clips in Your Events

Maybe it's just me, but this seems very useful.  I recently saw a discusson on the "Open in Timeline" command.  There's not a lot of documentation on it, but if you can use it to open an event browser clip in the timeline.  The video and audio of the clip are detached from each other.  Hafken and some others have noted that you could use this feature to sync audio to the video if there were sync problems.  I agree.
But it started me thinking ... what else could be done to the clip.  I took the Blade tool and cut off large amounts of the clip off the start and end then deleted the ends.  I then applied a couple of effects with pronounced amounts so I could track whether they "took" in the event browser clip or not.  To my surprise not only did the clip change in start and end and duration due to the Blade tool use, but also the effects remained.  I used the Left Arrow at the upper left of the timeline window to back out of the timeline edit as if I were backing out of a compound clip, and then clicked on the clip in the event browser.  All the edited changes I had made were now on that clip.  It had changed the length, start and end points and the nature of the video, etc ... Now that clip was a part of my event browser without having to render/share it and import the rendered version to get a clip I wanted.
I know many have asked about how they could get just the parts of the clip that they wanted and make that the clip that remained in their event browser.  We know we can save segments of a clip as favorites, but they are still all in the same clip.  So we cannot simply drag those segments onto the timeline.  It seems the Open in Timeline command can be used quite well to change the clips in the event browser to be just the parts that we want to keep in the event browser (you might have to duplicate the clip to edit out the multiple segments).  Furthermore, we can add processing to them and have them "saved" to the event browser for future use as building blocks.
Is it just me ... did I miss this functionality all along ... or is this something that is really useful?
    stephen

I agree it can be a useful feature in certain circumstances. The most obvious to me being the audio/video "sync" and creation of "subclip" equivalents.
I haven't tested it yet, but if you can put content from the timeline into an empty Event Browser compound clip, that could also be very useful, allowing an easier way to reuse content across projects as opposed to copy/paste from/to projects. I wonder what would happen if you paste content from a clip that is from a different Event.
I know many have asked about how they could get just the parts of the clip that they wanted and make that the clip that remained in their event browser.  We know we can save segments of a clip as favorites, but they are still all in the same clip.  So we cannot simply drag those segments onto the timeline.
Actually you can do this using favorites. After you have marked your favorite sections, in the Event Browser, you can just "Show Favorites" (control-F). Now all the favorite sections look like separate clips which you can individually edit into the timeline (either via keyboard or drag/drop).
I think using favorites/keywords to identify the parts you want to keep is preferable to the Open in Timeline use-blade-tool approach; even though it is non-destructive regarding the actual media on disk, it is destructive in the sense that you no longer have access to what you remove unless you re-mport it. In most cases, it is just better to hide that unwanted media rather than make it gone forever.

  • How to edit a vi file without labview

i work for the state of ri, and i have to edit a vi which was created about 4 years ago. we do not have labview here and wanted to know if it is possible to edit this. it is an exe file. i only need to make a minor change to it. please advise, very unfamiliar with labview, i cannot purchase labview, just wondering if there is anyway to edit this file

    jba,
If this is a simple change, and IF you have the source code, I may consider doing it for you at no charge.
Email me with a description of the change, and we can talk about it. If you don't have the source code, there is nothing anyone can do, you will have to find the company or individual that created it so see if they have the source.
In general, there is nothing you can do to edit an executable (unless you know machine code, and how to correct the checksum) without the source code. Even then, you will have to have LabVIEW. It would also be good to know what version of LabVIEW it was done in, as some versions are harder to convert than others.
    Good luck

  • How to edit information on website without lose any graphics

    Hello
Our company have a volunteer web designer but he was not available to respond at the moment.
I tried to copy the file from the server, make a back up file and edit the dreamweaver page, and change the date of the information.
Then I copy the file and upload to the server - the information was changed but lost all graphics etc... because I save the index.html
Please advise what I did wrong.
How to keep the graphics, etc everything ... all I need to change the dates or edit the text information ?
    Thanks

Can't answer without seeing the coding on your website.
There could be any number of reasons such as back-end processes,
    server side includes etc
Did you download the page with FTP, or just saved it from the browser?
    Please post a link.

  • How to edit mail.app attachments without resaving them?

It seems counterproductive that mail.app forces all email attachments to be READ-ONLY. This means you can only VIEW attachments, you can't EDIT attachments unless you resave with new filename, edit, then fish it out of the folder and reattach it when forwarding it to others. This is a huge headache and waste of time. Other email programs do not have this limitation.
Does anyone know how to open, edit, save, and then FORWARD the attachments? This is critical for people dealing with alot attachments daily who need to make changes and then forward to others. Thanks.

    Hello there tbluhp,
It sounds like you need Mail to stop downloading attachments automatically. You should be able to do that in the Adanced preferences for the mail account in question:
Advanced accounts preferences - Mail Help
    Automatically download all attachments
Mail always downloads media attachments (such as image, PDF, video, and audio files). By default, it also downloads other types of attachments (such as spreadsheet or zipped files). If you don’t want Mail to automatically download other types of attachments, deselect the checkbox. Downloaded attachments are included in Mail searches.
This option is available only for IMAP and Exchange accounts.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,

  • How to edit linked text in an Indesign long document without it effecting the whole document

I want to work out how to edit text in indesign without the rest scrolling
I have a large 200 page book.  The text was supplied in Word and I have placed the whole document automatically and now I am going through each page doing my magic with pics, stylesheets etc.
When the client comes back with edits, I am concerned that deleted or adding in text will scroll the text to the next chapter, etc etc.  This will be a nightmare.  Not sure how to unlink say 5 pages or so that are in each chapter so I can edit easily without the whole document being effected.
Apologies I am probably not explaining myself all that well.

    lisalip wrote:
    john the link is broken
I can see there are scripts but I don't want each page separate rather each chapter (each chapter can go for 2 or 7 pages)
I am only 35 pages or so into the book and if I have to I can re place the text with some work, ie start again with the text pages.
seems sily though that I cannot split the threaded stories a few pages at a time.
    The link is now fixed.
You can split the threaded story into separate stories anywhere in the thread. At the chapter breaks seems logical. There are many users who'll assert all sorts of right/wrong at you when it comes to threading text. For my purposes, I set up long documents much the way you propose; threading articles, stories, or chapters discreetly; rarely would I ever thread an entire long document as one. It's a preference, not a rule. Each way has benefits and pitfalls.

  • How to edit movie clip in fla library?

I'm attempting to edit some fla files that have embedded
movie clips. I can't figure out how to edit the movie clip files in
the library. I tried exporting the file to SWC file but can't edit
    that.
Can anyone tell me how this is done? Do I need seperate
source fla files that maybe I don't have for the movie clip files?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Thanks for your reply. That's what I would normally do but I
think the original programmers of this site did every thing they
possibly could to make it difficult for a non-expert to edit. I've
edited many flash sites but this one is ridiculous.
I just can't find all the images that make up the movie clip
to edit. I've looked through every layer and double clicked on
everything. I've ran out of ideas.
If anyone wants a challenge I'd be happy to send you the .fla
file just to see what I'm talking about. You can't edit
    anything.

  • Here is How to Edit clips of the same loop, which were recorded on seperate tracks, in the same way

Whiteout conditions here in the northeast, it's a Blizzard!
Hopefully this helps someone because I was banging my head against the wall trying to figure this out.
This is for people who want to precisely loop (or edit in other ways) multiple clips in the exact same way, but that are on seperate tracks playing concurrently in Multi-track view, so for instance looping 3 different tracks recorded simultaneously from a drum machine and keeping the same exact placement of each track relative to each other when trying to get the loop right (or any other type of edit)
It's all about how you switch between Edit view and Multi-track view, and you CAN'T group your clips before going to edit view, although this is counter-intuitive.
The basic jist is simple, "Selections" in the timeline, transfer from Multi-Track to Edit View and Back to Multi-Track...but you most follow a certain procedure, here is the procedure:
WARNING: THIS WILL ONLY WORK IF THE SELECTION IS OF ONE CLIP PER TRACK!!!  YOU CANNOT MAKE A TIMELINE SELECTION OF MULTIPLE CLIPS ON A TRACK AND HAVE THAT TIMELINE SELECTION TRANSFER TO EDIT VIEW, AS FAR AS I KNOW.
    In Multi-Track view:
    1) Switch the timeline to "Samples"
    2) Make a "Selection"  of the part you want to Loop and zoom all the way in to the start and end points to get the loop as precise as possible, if it's not perfect don't worry just get it as good as possible in Multi-track View, then in Edit View you can find the Zero-Crossing points.
    3) Make sure the clips you want to edit are NOT GROUPED AT THIS POINT
Here is the part that got me - AFTER making your Selection in Multi-Track view - you have to go to Edit view in a certain way, so that you don't de-select your selection:
WARNING: Do NOT Double-Click the clip/file you want to Edit!!!  Do not double left-click anywhere in MultiTrack View or you will de-select your selection.
note: You have to edit the files one at a time in Edit View, but if you go there using the correct procedure, you can transfer your selection you made in Multi-Track view.
    4) Decide which clip is the hardest to one to loop (usually it's an instrument sample rather then a drum loop but you never know)
    5) Instead of double-clicking a clip to Edit it, HOLD CONTROL AND LEFT CLICK THE CLIP YOU WANT TO EDIT ONE TIME, this will select the clip without de-selecting your TIMELINE SELECTION.
    6) Now that the clip you want to edit is selected, You want to go to Edit View USING ONE ROUTE ONLY --> Simply click "Edit View"
^Make sure you Timeline selection is still in place and hasn't moved do to user error (e.g. accidentally clicking the timeline or shift-clicking and moving the selection by accident <--- which I do by accident when attempting to control+click)
    7) If you followed the instructions exactly, You are now in Edit View with the selected clip along with the timeline selection you selected in Multi-Track view, showing it's exact timeline location at the bottom which is relative to the Multi-Track view
IMPORTANT: YOU MUST BE CAREFUL NOT TO DE-SELECT THE TIMELINE SELECTION, AS THAT WILL DE-SELECT THE TIMELINE SELECTION IN BOTH VIEWS.
    8) If you are having trouble looping without artifacts, To find the zero crossing points either go to edit > zero crossings or use shift+h or j for left edge, shift+K or L for right edge of the loop.
    9) if you must adjust it manually to fine tune then make sure you shift click the file as not to de-select the entire timeline selection.
    10) Once you have a perfect loop, zoom all the way in to the start and end points, and take note of exactly where the start and end points of the loop are located within the timeline.
    11) Go back to Multi-track view
12  To trim the clips to to the exact timeline selection: Hold control+left_click each clip that needs adjusting one-time, then right click > group clips
    13) BEING CAREFUL NOT TO DESELECT YOUR TIMELINE SELECTION, select your grouped clips by HOLDING CONTROL and clicking on any of the clips
    14) Point to the start or end one of the clips, when you see the icon showing arrows going either way, right click and drag your clips to roughly match up with the timeline selection, then zoom in further and adjust the clip start and end points to match up exactly with the timeline selection start and endpoints.
WARNING: IF YOU ACCIDENTALLY CLICK WHEN THE DOUBLE ARROW ICON IS NOT SHOWING, YOU WILL DE-SELECT YOUR TIMELINE SELECTION AND YOU WILL HAVE TO START THIS ENTIRE PROCESS ALL OVER AGAIN.
    15) Verify that your loop is looping correctly, in some tricky instances you may have to find different zero crossing points on the initial file you edited in edit view by repeating the above procedure, but this is unusual, although it just happened to me.
    16) If everything went correctly, now all your clips on seperate tracks are looped in the exact same way, if you want to destructively edit each file down to it's loop size, you can keep your timeline selection and control+click a file then click "Edit" (the one in the toolbar of course), one by one destructively editing each file.
    17) to extend the loop either set as a loop under "loop properties" and then just drag each file the number of times you want it to loop, or do it my way and right click the clip > duplicate and set the number of times to duplicate and whether to have them back to back or spaced, this is the quickest method for me.
Addendum: IF you have 2 files selected and click "Edit" to go to Edit view, it will give you the file of the clip you selected first, not 2nd. You must then go back to MT view, de-select the clip you selected first, then de-select the clip you want to edit, then RE-select the clip you want to edit.
-Also, you don't HAVE to group the files as I did in step 12, you can drag the edges of the clips to the timeline selection one by one, I just find it easier to group them after you have set the loop on one of the files in Edit View.
-Remember, you can't select the files one by one and have the timeline selection transfer to Edit View IF you group the files prior to going into Edit View.
GOT ALL THAT?  I sure as hell don't know if I do ...
All this could be easily avoided if Audition would simply let you edit multiple files simultaneously in Edit View relative to their position on the Multi-Track timeline.
I'd also like to know why when you do a full zoom in, neither the selection or the clips will snap to the ruler points, only to just before and after the ruler points on the timeline.
And also (and this may be my fault) I don't understand why when the tempo of my session is 89.8bpm, the timeline under the tracks says "90bpm" why does it round it off..?
Isn't that inexact and couldn't that present problems with syncing loops?  idk I could be wrong I can't get my head around these issues because of lack of knowledge on the subject, if someone could shed some light that would be great.

correction needs to be made to step #14, I typed:
    14) Point to the start or end one of the clips, when you see the icon showing arrows going either way, right click and drag your clips to roughly match up with the timeline selection, then zoom in further and adjust the clip start and end points to match up exactly with the timeline selection start and endpoints.
Here is the correction, THE CORRECTED PARTS ARE CAPITALIZED:
    14) Point to the start or end OF one of the clips, when you see the icon showing arrows going either way, LEFT-CLICK and drag your clips to roughly match up with the timeline selection, then zoom in further and adjust the clip start and end points to match up exactly with the timeline selection's start and end points.
    Another Correction:

If you add a new  slide with just a text box (therefore a very small amount of data),  to an existing presentation then save,  Keynote will only save the new content to the file,  it wont save  pre-existing content as its already included in the file.
The time  taken to "save" will be very much shorter than a "save as" when all of the existing content is saved again.

I mounted my external hard drive to a pc recently and now I don't have edit or write permissions to it on my Mac (read only). How do I get them back without erasing the drive and loosing my valuable work?

If you re-format it you will lose all the data on it!!!!! So make sure you have backed up the drive or moved all the data on it to another external HD or the internal HD on your iMac.
Below is an Apple Advice letter that explains how to format an external HD, it's written for Aperture but you can use the instructions to formate any external HD.
