How to eliminate a ground loop with SCXI units

I am using a SCXI chasis, the SCXI-1102 and 1303 and a 1602 USB interface.  these are connected to grounded thermocouples fixed to an experimental apparatus.  How do I eliminate the ground loop that forms when I power up my laptop (w/ 120V power) and to get accurate TC data?  things work find when the laptop is running on batteries, but I don't have that much battery power!

Hi Gogden,
I have you tried hooking up the thermocouples differentially?  This might eliminate the problem.  Also, if you could give me some more information about the noise it might help me troubleshoot the problem better.  Sometimes theres some noise due to lower quality power connectors on some laptops.  This is typically associated with a 60Hz noise.  Most of this is seen through a small audio hum when trying to amplify audio coming from laptops but it might be affecting the grounding of your USB DAQ card.  You might try one of these audio hum eliminators around which may solve the problem.  If you search google for "audio hum eliminator", you will find a variety of products for it.  In conclusion, I would first recommend trying differentially and if that doesn't fix the problem  you might look into the ground loop eliminator products out there.

  • Ground loop with TV when power adapter connected

I have a white Macbook (non-unibody) which I have connected to my TV with a mini-dvi to VGA adapter. I have done the same in the past with my Dell 1525 with no issues. When the Macbook is connected to the display whilst being connected with the power adapter, the screen has interference. After some googling I believe this is because of a ground loop. The monitor displays fine when the power adapter is removed.
Since I am using some processor-intensive applications my battery life doesn't last long, and it is incredibly inconvenient to have to keep plugging the adapter in and out.
Any suggestions on a cable to remove the ground feed or other solutions? I have already tried resetting the PRAM.

You might need an electrician to check or replace the electrical outlet or wiring, if it really is a ground loop. Try temporarily plugging the TV and Mac into the same surge strip. If the interference goes away, then the fault is likely in the outlet(s) that the Mac and TV are plugged in to. (The surge strip puts both devices on the "same outlet" thus eliminating the ground loop between outlets in your home wiring. Of course, a bad or old surge strip could cause a ground loop as well so if you're already using a surge strip, try another surge strip in case the ground loop is in the strip.)
Why don't you see it on the Dell? Likely because the Dell's power adapter has a transformer in it, which serves to isolate the electrical circuits between the devices. TVs and desktop computers often do not have this type of "isolation" transformer anymore, so ground loop interference can be more noticable. BTW, they do sell isolation transformers, but they're mostly for TV technician troubleshooting and not designed for continuous use. One that can handle a TV's electrical load can cost more than an electrician, so don't bother. You might be able to find a smaller, lower cost one to handle the Mac, but it still would mean a issue with the electrical wiring that may get worse over time. So IMO, better to spend the money on a electrician.

  • Humming sound like a ground loop with added hard drives

I get a humming low freq Hum from my MacPro from adding or added hard drives. I am using Seagates 320's ( 3 - non raid ). The MP is under my desk and I think some may not hear what I do if sitting on a desktop.
I can't figure out if it's a ground loop issue, more than one drive spinning at the same speed or some mechanical isssue, like metal to metal contact.
Just one drive with the OS. The Hum if still there is not something I am aware of or bothers me. But your room must be quiet to hear ir best.

As I mentioned before, some people will not hear the "hum" if the MP is sitting on your desk ( or one hard drive ) . Mine is under a large desk that is 6' long, which kinda amplifies the sound and creates a sound box for the low freq hum. Some what like adding a subwoofer. But when you add one or more drives it will Hum and I think I know the cause.
One is there is no isolation ( ie rubber ) between the hard drive mounting system, the (metal) inside frame and outer (metal) case. This causes the MP to become or act like a tuning fork.
For those who do hear the hum sound, you can take both hands on either side of the MP and "squeeze" the sides and hear the sound get lower. Take your hands off and hear it louder. So the whole MP is vibrating or creating "noise" or low freq Hum ( tuning fork) .
The problem is some what resolved with using 2 drives if you mount one in bay 1 and the second in bay 4. ( not side by side ) In other words, the sound is amplified to a higher degree if you have matching drives ( non raid ) next to eachother.
This issue will drive you nuts if you have it or can hear it. The MP stock 2.66 thats a month old is what I have. Maybe some other Macs don't show this same sound.
Whats interesting is the metal case, both outer and inter being connected as a "rigid unit" is causing or lets say, making matters worse. The other of which I have not plotted the freq, I think is around 60hz which just so happens to be the same as your " AC power". So the humming could sound like a ground loop, when in fact the sound originates from the hard drive and is being magnfied by the rigid non insulated MP that might be inhancing it's own "resonate frequency"and acting like a tuning fork.
Now if I am right and the MP is reacting as a tuning fork. What is the solution? I don't really know. And I have not tried any so called fixes other than switching bays. I have some ideas. But only those that would not cause a warrenty issue.
I hope Apple will take a look at the issue and see if a real engineer can first identify the issue and come up with a solution.

  • How to build a current loop with cFP-1808 and analog input module AI-110?

I am trying to build a current loop to measure temperature via and a resistance thermometer a transmitter that converts the signal to current. I am using cFP-1808 with the power supply PS-5 directly connected to it.
For the current measurement I am using AI-110 but I am having trouble with getting current in my loop. I have looked in he manual of the AI-110 module and am using the set up for a "loop with an external power supply", counting the PS-5 as external. That is to say, I have connected the negative transmitter terminal to Vsup on the AI-110, and the positive side to Vin. Now, however, I am stuck. I don't get any signal in my loop.
Can I use the PS-5 to power my AI-110 module or do I need to use another external power supply? In this case, how do I connect this?
    Thanks for any help!

    Clara G:
I overlooked that in your 1st post you were connecting the other end of the transmitter to Vin, you actually need to connect it to Iin on the AI-110.
Regarding the use of the PS-5 to power the cFp and supply power to the loop, I do not know if that will work or not.
Suggest that you switch over to Iin terminal and use the separate 24V supply to power the loop. If that works, them maybe try the PS-5 for both the cFP and loop power.

  • How to stop a while loop with long delay

    Hi everyone,
I am building a simple program for turning on and off a single Bit.  The task is to turn ON the Bit for a period length T1, and OFF the Bit for a period length T2. T1 is normally different from T2, and can be controlled  by users.
Since T1 and T2 can be variable, they sometimes can be very long.
If I use a Wait function inside a While loop, it needs long delay to be able to Stop the Main program.
The same situation happens when I use Timed loop.
Can anyone suggest me how to do this task?
    Thanks a lot.

  • Help on how to make an infinite loop with the same space on all images

    HI:
I made a movie clip with infinite  loop in which there are images that move from right to left something simple like a marquee, and each image has a blank space between  them, but between last and first image there is a more space, how I can do to  make all images have an equal space between each one and that the motion never stops.

Thanks for your time and answers my friend, but I'm still not be able to achieve what I want, I forgot to tell that I'm doing this by layers, let's say, I have 5 images, (in fact I have like 50 images converted to movie clip symbols) each image has it's own layer, layer 1, layer 2, layer 3, layer 4, layer 5, then I put a 200 frame motion tween on all layers at 30 fps, then I arranged layer 1 on the first frame to the frame 200, the second layer from frame 50 to frame 250, third layer from frame 100 to frame 300, fourth layer from frame 150 to frame 350, and fifth layer from frame 200 to frame 400, by this I mean I put a 50 frame of space on each image but if you can see, the last image has a duration from frame 200 to frame 400, and there's nothing on frame 250 where it is supposed to be another image to match the same blank space of all the others, the movie clip restarts on the frame 400, and there's a 150 frames of blank space between the last image and the first image, I put the gotoandplay on the frame 250, but it abruptly restarts the movie.
Is there another way to do this ?
Am I doing something wrong ?
Please I really really need help on this.
    Thanks

  • How to make a Video loop with FCP Express?

Hi everybody. I need to make a lot of shorts videos with jpgs extracted from a main video. But those jpgs videos must be done as a loop that will returns and plays again forever (the videos will be placed in a web site) Is that possible, and if it is, what I need to do to obtain that loop?.
    Best Regards.
    Julian Laffont.

Hi Tom. It's not for my web site. Is for someone else . I don't know what to do or say. Should I make a video with the jpgs and tell them that they need to use the looping application of their web site? (I don't know if they have that application) Also Will be good to know if there is a specific format of video that loops in the web sites?. Wich one will be.QTM, WMV I don't know.
    Thanks.

You have heights on the ul, li as 36px and a line-height of the text of 35px so they are not matching up.  Personally speaking I would normally recommend using padding on the links to create the height and not set the height on the ul or li elements.

  • How to configure resistor network on BNC-2095 with SCXI-1100

The manuals are not entirely clear on this point. I have a BNC-2095 that is connected to a SCXI-1100, and will be reading voltage input signals from pressure transducers and other assorted sensors. The manual indicates that I should not use a ground-referenced input with the BNC-2095 and have the 10-ohm resistor networks in place, but it only discusses installing the 10-megaohm resistors for use with the SCXI-1102. What is the correct configuration for use with the SCXI-1100?
    Thanks,
    Tom

    Hi Tom,
Using the 10 MOhm resistor network instead of the default 10 Ohm resistor network with the SCXI-1102 allows you to measure both floating and ground-referenced signals.  According to page 7, Table 2 of the SCXI-1303 manual, this is not recommended with the SCXI-1100.  I will verify with R&D that this is also the case when using the SCXI-1100 with the BNC-2095.
If you are certain that your signal is ground-referenced then you should remove the default 10 Ohm resistor network.  The input impedance should be high enough to prevent any sort of ground loop.  Check page 5, Table 1 of the BNC-2095 manual for the appropriate jumper settings when measuring ground-referenced signals
IMPORTANT NOTE:  Do not attempt to measure a ground-referenced signal with the default 10 Ohm resistor network installed.  This is well documented in both the BNC-2095 and the SCXI-1303 manuals that it may cause damage to your hardware.

  • Working in Logic 9, how do I use a drum loop WITH ITS PRESET EFFECTS? I can drag and drop the loop but it plays dry in timeline. thanks

Working in Logic 9, how do I use a drum loop WITH ITS PRESET EFFECTS? I can drag and drop the loop but it plays dry in timeline. thanks

    Here's the short-cut solution:
Green Apple tracks are MIDI files (so to speak). If you drag one from the loop browser (Capitol C Orchestral hit, as you mentioned in this exable) directly into the arrange page it creates the MIDI file and the instrument to play it back on.
HOWEVER.If you create and audio track first, THEN drag the green Apple loop onto that track, the loop will get "bounced" with the reverb in tact and you'll have the exact sound that you heard in the preview.
    Make sense?

  • How to use old "Apple Loops for Soundtrack" with Garageband

Since Soundtrack (was part of FinalCut Express HD) doesn't work anymore (since some ProKit framework update) and was not part of the FinalCut Express 4 upgrade I used Garageband for sound creation and editing. But I missed some good loops from the old Soundtrack.
The Apple Loops for Soundtrack were still sitting on my harddisk but Garageband didn't recognize them in the Loop-Browser. Looking at the structure I found the Search Index files (/Library/Audio/Apple Loop Index/). I have two there, one for Garageband and another for iLife Sound Effects. Both are interpreted by Garageband. But no third for the old Soundtrack Loops. So I had a look at the Sound Loops installer DVD from FinalCut HD and there I found a similar structur and copied the Index file to the location of the two indexes mentioned above. I left the Loops for Soundtrack where they are (also could edit the index file for new locations, but that's a 7.5MB text file) and now Garageband knows their location and also lists the loops at the right categories inside the Loop-Browser.
Maybe that helps someone, even if I didn't find a topic about it here.

Ah.. ok, then never mind. Just didn't find any information about how to use the old soundtrack loops with garageband and so I did some thinking on my own. And if it works that easy, the better it is

  • How can I build a table with the time values of a timer from a while loop

    Hi:
I have a question concerning building a table:
Every 100ms I read a value from a sensor (while loop with a timer). I would like to build a table with the actual time and the concerning value. For example:
    0msec         1V
    100msec     2V
    200msec     3V
    300msec     4V
    etc.
If I use the Express VI for building a table, I always get the date and time, but I don't need the date and the time is in the following format: HH:MMS, which is nonsensical for me as I can't differentiate within msec. Can I change the format anywhere?
Can I also save the table to a file or even to an Excelsheet? How can I do that?
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi Craig:
thank you very much. To solve the mystery : ) :
I want to drive a stepper motor with a specific frequency. To get the current degree value of the motor I would like to measure the current time (from the beginning of the move on). (With a formula I get the degree value out of the time)
Concurrently I would like to get data from a torque sensor and from a pressure sensor. That's why I asked you about the time and the table. The measurement should start with the movement of the motor. How can I do that? Right now I have different block diagrams (different while loops) (see attachment) and I would like to put them in one.
I haven't done the block diagram for the pressure sensor yet, so there is only the one for the torque sensor and the one for the motor.
I also would like to set a mark in the table when the voltage value of an analog input gets under a specific threshold value. Is that possible?
I'm sorry, I'm a novice in LabVIEW. But maybe you can help me.
    Thank you very much!
