How to export RTF with paragraph style names?

Anybody can help me "how to export RTF with paragraph style names?"
Thank you

It's not something that's natively done with Indesign.
However it's possible that it might be able to be scripted.

  • How do I use multiple paragraph styles in one line?

    I'm working on my thesis in APA style.  I'm creating a Table of Contents with the help of Pages.  When you get to Level 3 in APA headings (no problems with Levels 1 and 2) it needs to look like this:
    [0.5in Indent] Masculinities in higher education.  For men, the college experience.... (paragraph starts on same line as the heading).
    I created a paragraph style for the (bolded) heading above [Heading 3].  When I do this, like magic the heading shows up in the table of contents (yeah!).  However when I do this the rest of the paragraph shows up too (boo!).  When I highlight to change the just rest of the paragraph (not the heading) to the style "Body" it changes the heading too and removes it from the table of contents.  How can I make 2 paragraph styles work together in the same paragraph so I can use the tale of contents tool??  Surly there is a work-around.
    Pages 5

    As the name implies, paragraph styles are not intended to be used on a unit smaller than a paragraph. Therefore if you want the TOC to be automatically generated then you need to have distinct  paragraphs... as you specify the APA style with the content and heading continuous then you will have to manually create the TOC.

  • How to export file with original filename number suffix, but with more digits

    Is there a way to keep the original filename number suffix, but change the formatting of the number, adding leading zeros for instance?
    When I import photos from my camera I like to rename them, and give them sequential numbers, e.g. "2015-01 Hamburg 1.cr2", "2015-01 Hamburg 2.cr2", "2015-01 Hamburg 10.cr2", .. "2015-01 Hamburg 134.cr2", and so on.
    Normally when I export photos I like to keep the file names exacly as I imported them (except the extension) e.g. 2015-01 Hamburg 1.jpg, "2015-01 Hamburg 2.jpg", .. "2015-01 Hamburg 10.jpg", .. "2015-01 Hamburg 134.jpg".
    But sometimes I would like to export them with leading zeros, typically when adding photos to a web site or blog where there are sort mechanisms that only support simple sort algorithms based on file names, meaning the sort order of my photos with their original file names would become "2015-01 Hamburg 1.jpg, "2015-01 Hamburg 10.jpg", .. "2015-01 Hamburg 134.jpg", "2015-01 Hamburg 2.jpg".
    So I would like the file names to be "2015-01 Hamburg 001.jpg", "2015-01 Hamburg 002.jpg", "2015-01 Hamburg 010.jpg", "2015-01 Hamburg 134.jpg".
    By keeping the original file number suffix I can easily go back to the original file whenever I need to, and the sort order would work even with simple sorting.
    The export Filename Template Editor gives quite advanced support for numbering files when exporting, see attached screenshot. There's support for exporting files with custom file names, and adding sequence, total and image number with padding (up to 9999/####). But those add new numbers, they do not consider the original filename number suffix. If I use the "Image # (001)" for instance, my example above would export as "2015-01 Hamburg 001.jpg", "2015-01 Hamburg 002.jpg", "2015-01 Hamburg 003.jpg", "2015-01 Hamburg 004.jpg", if those were the four photos I wanted to export, making it hard for me to trace them back to the original photo.
    I have found no way of adding such padding on the original file number.
    Does anyone know if this is possible or have suggestions for a workaround?
    It shouldn't be too hard for Adobe to support this I'd imagine.
    export pattern rename files  file_number filename_template_editor

    I do not know if you can do what you explained above, but there is a workaround to this (and a way to avoid having to do it in the future):
    In the Library module, make sure your images are sorted by Capture Date (this will put them in the right order, even with suffixes like 1, 13, etc.)
    Select all images, and then Rename them, using a Custom text followed by a Sequence number. The Custom text in this case should be the original name (such as, 2015-01 Hamburg, as in your example). Make sure the Sequence number is formatted with enough zeroes to include all the numbers in your images.
    In the future, when you rename images during Import, make sure you select the Sequence number format that will include all the needed zeroes, so you don't have to go through this again.

    Hi all,
    This is something I threw together
    doc = app.activeDocument,
    ps = doc.paragraphStyles.everyItem().getElements().slice(0),
    l = ps.length,
    paraStyles = [],
    c = 0;
    while (l--) {
        var styleDetails = [], n = 0, s, x, p, q;
        s = ps[l].properties;
        for (x in s) {
            p = (s[x] && s[x].hasOwnProperty ("name")) ? s[x].name : s[x]; // change according to requirements.
            if (p && p.constructor.name == "String") p = '"' + p +'"'; // ok if the sctring doesn't contain a " mark
            else if (x == "tabList") p = getTabList (s[x]);
            else if (p instanceof Object && p.constructor.name != "Enumerator") {
                var objProps = [], z = 0;
                for (q in p) objProps[z++] = q + ": " + p[q]
                p = x + " {" + objProps.join(", ") + "}";
            styleDetails[n++] = x + ": " + p;
        paraStyles[c++] = "{" + styleDetails.join(", ") + "}";
    temp = new File (Folder (Folder.temp) + "/" + doc.name + " Paragraph Style Properties  " + ("" + new Date).replace(/:/g,"\xB7").replace(/\s\S+$/,"")+ ".txt");
    temp.encoding = "UTF-8";
    temp.lineFeed = ($.os[0]=="M") ? "Macintosh" :" Windows";
    temp.open('w');
    temp.write("\uFEFF" + paraStyles.join("\r"));
    temp.close();
    $.sleep(300);
    temp.execute(true);
    function getTabList (t) {
        var tl = t.length, n, pTabList = [];
        for (n = 0; n < tl; n++) { // if the leader etc. contains a " then you have to use ' instead of "
            pTabList[n] = "({alignment: " + t[n].alignment + ', alignmentCharacter: "' + t[n].alignmentCharacter + '", leader: "' +t[n].leader +  '", position: ' + t[n].position + "})";
        return "[" + pTabList.join(", ") + "]";
    function getGrepList (g) { // nestedGrepStyles
        return // couldn't be bothered to do this one, sorry
        var tl = g.length, n, pnestedGrepList = [];
        for (n = 0; n < tl; n++) { // if the leader etc. contains a " then you have to use ' instead of "
            // pTabList[n] = figure for yourself
        return "[" + pTabList.join(", ") + "]";
    You can then recreate the styles by splitting the string by "\r" and using doScript or Eval.
    Might be better to produce a tagged doc with <alignment> foo </alignment> type structure to get around quotation porblems
    However for a simple import export snippet wouldn't this be better?
    var doc = app.activeDocument,
          newDoc = app.documents.add(),
          fp;
    // if you need to add function to remove app.styles that are automatically added to the new document
    fp = new File (Folder.temp + "/" + +new Date + ".indd")
    doc.saveACopy (fp);
    $.sleep (500);
    newDoc.importStyles (ImportFormat.TEXT_STYLES_FORMAT, fp); // can add all sorts of things to import or load
    fp.remove();
    // You now have a clean new Document to load the styles from using importStyles

  • How do I prevent unwanted paragraph style overrides when exporting an epub

    I am having trouble controlling the size of a  logo in an e-pub. Actually, it's only a problem with Amazon's Kindle which seems to insist on enlarging the image to the full screen width. So, I need a robust command in my CSS to override Kindle's preference. Seems easy. I placed the logo into my In Design layout in a picture box with the object style "frontmatterlogo" which should export into a div of the same name. Which it does. So far so good. However, In Design insists on creating a paragraph style override (see bold in the code below) which disregards the  frontmatterlogo settings I've written in to my CSS in favour of it's own image settings which correspond to the size of the placed image. Currently, I've just put together a hacked solution by writing a class for para-style-override into my CSS. It's an inelegant solution but seems to work for all the other e-readers. But, as mentioned, it doesn't work on the Kindle.
    Anyone have any idea what is causing these overrides and how I might prevent them so my div class can take over?

    Thanks for getting back so quickly, Bob.
    I'm using Version 5.5. I have basically the same problem when the object is anchored. In the case below, I created a new paragraph style for the line on which the logo would be anchored, also mapping to the frontmatterlogo entry in my CSS. This time, no paragraph-style-override is added but In Design still adds it's own image dimensions corresponding to the size at which the image was placed in the layout. This overrides the settings in my CSS and, I suspect, might be what's allowing the Kindle settings to take over as well. I had kind of resigned myself to fixing this in the code  on a book by book basis, which is fine if the only images the book contains is a cover and a title page logo. But I'm worried about what happens when I have to create an e-pub from a photo-heavy book. You can see how it would be ideal to create a few specific object styles for different image situations in In Design and have them map them to specific div styles in my CSS. Basically it's a workflow issue. This would minimize the amount of after-the-fact coding our already swamped designers would have to do.
    It's so obvious in the code where the problem lies, and so I just have a feeling that there may be a simple fix. If only I knew why In Design felt obliged to specify the image size.

  • Framemaker 8 problem with paragraph styles

    Hi,
    I manage a documentation (one file) including paragraph styles organized like that :
    -- Chapter
         |--- Sub chapter
           |--- Sub Sub chapter
    My question is simple
    When a create a PDF file from my document, including bookmarks, I'm encountering the following problem :
    The "chapter 4", "sub chapter 4" and "sub sub chapter 4" paragraphs are created correctly. The bookmarks are created with the correct place.
    Like that :
    |---- chapter 4
      |---- sub chapter 4
       |----- sub sub chapter 4
    BUT
    The "sub sub chapter "5 paragraph styles are created into the "Chapter 4" structure, added with the "sub sub chapter" of Chapter 4. And the Chapter 5 just contains the "chapter 5" and "sub chapter 5" bookmarks.
    Like that :
    Chapter 4
        |---- sub chapter 4
           |---- sub sub chapter 4
           |---- sub sub chapter 5
    Chapter 5
       |--- sub chapter 5
    After checking the structure of my document, I do not find any thing which could create this problem.
    The paragraph styles seems to be correct.
    Thank you so so much to help me because I don't know how to replace the "sub sub chapter 5" below the" sub chapter 5".
    Phil ;o)

    There are a few ways to go with this. One is to put all the files in a Book,
    temporarily, and set the one with the correct style definition as the
    source, then synchronize the paragraph styles. This will change ALL styles
    with the same names throughout all the documents, and add any styles that
    are present in the source, but not in one of the other files, so it is a bit
    risky, especially if any styles are based on or [Basic
    Paragraph] itself is used in one of the files and it isn't already defined
    exactly the same in all files.
    You can also open any file and go to the Paragraph Styles panel menu and
    choose Load Styles, then select the style you want to load, and how to
    handle a conflict (Use Incoming), which will give you more control over what
    happens.
    Or each time you open a file and get the missing font warning you can go to
    Find Font and select the missing font, then pcik your substitute, check the
    redefine styles box, and click Change All. This would probably be the best
    choice since it doesn't depend on style names to make the correct changes.

  • How can you create a paragraph style that removes all spaces and forces everything to lower case?

    Hi,
    Is there anyway of using GREP (or some other magical wizardry) to create a paragraph style that automatically removes all spaces and forces words into lower case?
    Strange request i know....I'm wanting to use it for datamerged email addresses.
    Thanks

    so doing it through InDesign is a work around I'm exploring.
    Excel has the 'LOWER' function and the ability to record macros for a quick find/replace on the spaces - so that's definitely a good option if it can't be solved purely in InDesign.
    You can change case via scripting in InDesign. This AppleScript (OSX only) will set the case of the selected paragraph style to lower. It would be possible to add some code that would strip spaces as well:
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS6"
        activate
            set StyleList to name of every paragraph style of active document
        set myDialog to make dialog with properties {name:"Document Paragraph Styles"}
        tell myDialog
            tell (make dialog column)
                tell (make border panel)
                    tell (make dialog column)
                        make static text with properties {static label:"Choose a Style", min width:150}
                    end tell
                    tell (make dialog column)
                        set myPresetsDropdown to make dropdown with properties {string list:StyleList, selected index:0, min width:150}
                    end tell
                end tell
            end tell
        end tell
        set myResult to show myDialog
        if myResult = true then
            --+1 gets the correct name because list starts at 0
            set myStyle to item ((selected index of myPresetsDropdown) + 1) of StyleList
        else
            return
        end if
        destroy myDialog
        tell active document
            set myStyle to paragraph style myStyle
            repeat with j from 1 to (count stories)
                repeat with i from 1 to (count paragraphs in story j)
                    if applied paragraph style of paragraph i of story j is myStyle then
                        --defines a variable to replace the generic this_text parameter in the handler
                        set SCText to the contents of paragraph i of story j
                        set contents of paragraph i of story j to my change_case_of(SCText)
                    end if
                end repeat
            end repeat
        end tell
    end tell
    on change_case_of(this_text)
        set the_comparison_string to "ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ"
        set the_source_string to "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz"
        set the_new_text to ""
        repeat with thisChar in this_text
            set x to the offset of thisChar in the_comparison_string
            if x is not 0 then
                set the_new_text to (the_new_text & character x of the_source_string) as string
            else
                set the_new_text to (the_new_text & thisChar) as string
            end if
        end repeat
        return the_new_text
    end change_case_of

  • Problem with paragraph style overrides and character formatting

    I've had this problem for a long time, and sometimes it resolves itself, sometimes it doesn't. Finally I'm begging for help.
    I am typesetting academic articles into a journal.  We use endnotes. The endnotes have both italic and regular formatting--italics for book and journal titles, and foreign phrases.
    Sometimes when I place the text, the formatting reverts to whatever it was in Word.  To try to fix that, I've begun stripping the Word formatting from the original document, making everything "Courier New" and just importing it like that.  I figured this would clear a lot of the problems I've had with fiddly formatting issues.
    I was mistaken.
    Here is what happens:
    When I place the document it comes up in the original Courier New font, with italics and other formatting intact.  If I click "article style" which is the main article paragraph  style format, normally it changes.  but if I right click and select "apply article style" it is more likely to change the paragraph to the proper style, with italics and other formatting still intact.
    But when it gets to endnotes, I'm sort of screwed.
    My endnotes style is a bulletted style, so that I can have the endnote numbers consistent.  but this seems to screw all the style formatting.
    Here is what I do:
    With the cursor in endnote text, I click "bulleted endnote style".  The character format remains the same, with a + beside the style. The endnote number format is different, however.  If I click "clear overrides" it does in fact change to the proper formatting, but it strips any italics or other character in the text.  This is frustrating because many of these endnotes have lots of italicized journal and book titles, and it takes a long time to figure out which ones I need to reitalicize manually.
    I have tried to use the "customize style import>Style mapping" but it has not fixed anything.
    Please help me figure out how to make these transitions more smoothly.  I am open to suggestions both on how to make the changes once the document is placed in the Indesign file, and also making modifications to formats in the native Word file so that I don't have these problems.
    Thanks
    Dan

    Sorry, that last message wasn't supposed to send (if that's not obvious!). I was writing it and got interrupted.  Damn iphone.
    I know why there are two numbers.  This is not an issue. What I didn't finish writing was that, the note number before i bullet it is a different font/ format. Again, not a problem.  Here is something interesting, though.  If I delete that original number by placing the cursor in the middle of it (say a between the 4 and 2 of 42) then delete everything by Shift+arrow forward, press delete then delete the rest of the unnecessary characters, THEN apply the style formatting, it works just fine.  Is it something to do with the character codes of those original note numbers?
    Word drops in so many hidden codes that it screws everything up!

  • Create automatic white gap/bar with paragraph style

    Hello,
    Thanks to your help and the Paragraph Ruler trick, I managed to get automatic title formatting (the grey background)
    Now, I would like to get automatically white gap as in line two but I can't figure out how to do it (tried with strikethrough but it's all over the text, you can't cheat).
    Any idea?
    Thanks.

    Here I am (sorry I didn't answer before, during the weekend i am not in my office).
    You didn't tell us why do you want to change the text box width? That could help us to give you a better answer.
    However if you need to have different text box width you can use this method:
    Only one paragraph style with only one rule column width, "vertical line" and grep style.

    How to export oracle database using exp command without including tables space names.
    I tried with this
    ./exp username/password file=db-export.dmp
    ./imp username/password file=db-export.dmp full=y ignore=y
    But when I try to import database with separate login(username/password) its giving following error for some tables,
    ORA-00959: tablespace 'MANUJA' does not exist
    MANUJA is my username of first database
    any help ?
    Thanks
    Best Regards,
    Manuja

    Option 1:
    ./imp username/password file=db-export.dmp full=y
    If still error then :
    Option 2:
    pre-create your table then import with ignore=y option.
    If still error then :
    make sure userB just have one default tablespace (BC) and quota only on BC. So if you have unlimited quota for userB on all tablespaces, then objects will go to original tablespace and not the tablespace you want to put in(to default tablespace).
    Revoke any unlimited tablespace privs from userB and just have one default tablespace.
    REVOKE UNLIMITED TABLESPACE FROM USERB;
    imp system/manager fromUser=userA toUser=userA file=myexport.dmp log=myexport.log
    Source: OrionNet @ remap tablespace using imp

  • Scripts to insert metadata automatically to document with paragraph style

    Hello,
    I am trying to find a way to automatically insert  metadata into my document through paragraph style in indesign cs5.5.
    This will be myDocument title, the Author name and myDocument description.
    Is there anyone who can help me with this project?
    Thanks.

    Place the script in the following location: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS6\Scripts\startup scripts
    If you close the document the script will automatically put the metadata in your indesign file (use ctrl+w or menu -> file -> close option to close the file)
    Code:
    #targetengine session
    //if you want to test the script for your active document, comment the below line else copy the script in your startup folder
    app.menuActions.itemByName("Close").eventListeners.add("beforeInvoke", function()
    var myDoc = app.activeDocument;
    var docTitleText="";
    var docDescripText="";
    app.findGrepPreferences = app.changeGrepPreferences = null;
    app.findGrepPreferences.findWhat = '.+';
    found = app.activeDocument.findGrep (true);
    for (j = found.length-1; j >=0 ; j--)
        var foundText = found[j].contents;
        //You can define multiple Paragraph style for Document Title
        if(found[j].texts[0].appliedParagraphStyle.name=="docTitle1")
            docTitleText=found[j].contents;
        else if(found[j].texts[0].appliedParagraphStyle.name=="docTitle2")
            docTitleText=docTitleText + " " + found[j].contents;
        else if(found[j].texts[0].appliedParagraphStyle.name=="docTitle3")
            docTitleText=docTitleText + " " + found[j].contents;
        //You can define multiple Paragraph style for Document Description
        else if(found[j].texts[0].appliedParagraphStyle.name=="docDescription1")
            docDescripText=found[j].contents;
        else if(found[j].texts[0].appliedParagraphStyle.name=="docDescription2")
            docDescripText=docDescripText + " " + found[j].contents;
        else if(found[j].texts[0].appliedParagraphStyle.name=="docDescription3")
            docDescripText=docDescripText + " " + found[j].contents;
    with (myDoc.metadataPreferences){
        author = "My Name";
        documentTitle = docTitleText;
        description = docDescripText;

  • Locking up with paragraph style change

    I'm using the latest version of InDesign CC 2014; I'm working on a relatively simple 154-page document.
    When I try to apply a change to a paragraph style, however, the application quits responding and I get the "beachball" until I force-quit. I've tried changing the style within the Paragraph Styles dialog, and changing it in the text then redefining the style. Nothing works.
    I also tried exporting the file to be able to be opened in InDesign CS6; that crashed the application, and sent a report to Adobe.
    Any help?

    I've found that it is document-specific; in other words, it only happens with certain ID documents. But I can't tell what the common points are among the documents.
