How to forward from a servlet to a (secured) jsp

hi all
actually i am trying to forward a request from a servlet to a jsp which is located in the WEB-INF-directory of the web-app...
as i read in the docs the path in the getRequestDispatcher-method must start with a "/" so i tried to get a requestDispatcher-object from this path:
/WEB-INF/secureJSP/abc.jsp...
but all i get is a FileNotFoundException: no ressource "..." in the servlet context root "..."
if i put the jsp in the web-app-root (like /abc.jsp) i am able to get a requestDispatcher-object without troubles...
whats wrong? any ideas?

Hi
Let me clarify this for you, Firstly as I said the WEB-INF directory is not accessible to the browser i.e a user couldn't possibly type in http://server-name:port-number/myapp/WEB-INF/test.jsp - This wouldn't work. But what you can do is forward a request to the jsp through a servlet using the RequestDispatcher.
The RequestDispatcher object can be obtained in two ways. One is from the servletContext and the other is from the request. If it is obtained from the servletContext then the path is interpreted relative to the root of the web application. If it is got from the request without the "/" then the path is interpreted relative to the current request servicing resource.
In your case get the RequestDispatcher from the ServletContext and provide the path as you have provided - assuming that WEB-INF directory is just below your myapp directory.
Keep me posted on your progress & sorry for the confusion.
Good Luck!

    I believe I can not use a
    request.sendRedirectURL("....") in which I would
    encode all my parameters, because:Righto. This is a bit tricky.
    Basically, you have two options, and both of those are a little nasty.
    1) You could use and intermediate JSP page. Just dispatch you request to that page, use the attributes to construct a form with hidden fields, and use Javascript to POST that form to your intended URL on the document's BODY onload event. Would work, but wouldn't be pretty and requires you to use JSPs and Javascript. Still an idea.
    2) This is something that I wouldn't recommend. Open a socket to the URL you you want to post your data. Manually construct a HTTP POST request, encoding your parameters into the headers. Read and parse the response & modify your HttpServletResponse object accordingly.
    Take a look at i.e. http://javaalmanac.com/egs/java.net/PostSocket.html?l=new for some pointers.
    I'd go with item #1.
    For my own edification, I'd be also interested in
    knowing why such a function does not exist in the
    current httpServletRequest api.I suppose it's a little out of scope. Servlets were ment to interoperate inside one container, not across domains and different implementations.
    I'm guessing I must be missing something fundamentals
    maybe?No, you're not.

  • Forms applet does not load when request forwarded from custom servlet

    I have an existing forms app that I wish to call from a newly-developed servlet. The servlet determines which form to call and then forwards the request to the forms servlet using RequestDispatcher.forward().
    The request is forwarded correctly but when it is done all I see is a blank browser (IE7) window. When I View Source I see all the correct HTML code (from basejpi.htm) but it seems my browser does not attempt to load the forms applet. No messages are displayed in the Java Console. This is the same HTML that comes back if I run the forms app directly, e.g. click a link that goes straight to the forms servlet URL, only in that case the forms app starts up fine.
    Anyone know why this does not work?

    Figured out what is going on:
    In basejpi.htm there is "<SCRIPT LANGUAGE=JavaScript SRC=java/forms_ie.js>" that creates an OBJECT tag to load the forms applet. I believe since the context of my custom servlet is different than that of the forms servlet, forms_ie.js is not found when the request is forwarded from my servlet.
    One question answered raises another. There is also an OBJECT tag inside a NOSCRIPT tag for machines where scripting has been disabled:
    <!-- Forms applet definition (start) -->
    <NOSCRIPT>
    <OBJECT name=FormsApplet
    type="application/x-java-applet"
    ...>
    </NOSCRIPT>
    <SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript" SRC="java/forms_ie.js"></SCRIPT>
    My thinking is to remove the NOSCRIPT tag, and also the SCRIPT tag mentioned above, so all machines will simply see the OBJECT tag, like so:
    <!-- Forms applet definition (start) -->
    <OBJECT name=FormsApplet
    type="application/x-java-applet"
    ...>
    This makes me wonder why the SCRIPT option is there to begin with. Anyone see a downside to this approach?

  • Challenge forwarding from a servlet to a JSP

    Redirecting information from a servlet to a JSP
    Hello Everyone,
         I am processing the contents of a html form using a servlet. After processing the
    information received and storing it into a javabean I am trying to pass control onto a jsp for
    display. At this stage the jsp does not display as desired due to a URL challenge. The URL
    which references my jsp is:
    http://localhot/ferngully/prefset.jspThis url has been designated to the jsp page 'prefset.jsp' by the application specific web.xml
    file (...I am using Tomcat 5!), the relevant contents of which follow:
    <servlet>
         <servlet-name>PreferenceSet</servlet-name>
         <jsp-file>/prefset.jsp</jsp-file>
    </servlet>
    <servlet-mapping>
         <servlet-name>PreferenceSet</servlet-name>
         <url-pattern>/ferngully/prefset.jsp</url-pattern>
    </servlet-mapping>If I access the page with the afore mentioned URL it displays correctly. However the URL which
    is returned to the browser after the servlet has forwarded control to the JSP is:
    http://localhost/ferngully/ferngully/PreferencesThe following form markup is used to access the servlet:
    <form name="form1" method="post" action="ferngully/Preferences"> I know that I have mapped the servlet correctly because the servlet performs it's programatic tasks happily :)
    I am using code within the servlet to forward control to the JSP, and I believe that this is the crux of my challenge.
    The code for the servlet is listed below.
    package userpreferences;
    import javax.servlet.*;
    import javax.servlet.http.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    public class PreferencesServlet extends HttpServlet
         public void init(ServletConfig config) throws ServletException
              super.init(config);
         public void doGet(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException
              doPost(request, response);
         public void doPost(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException
              String url = "/prefset.jsp";
              ServletContext servCont = getServletContext();
              RequestDispatcher reqDispatch = servCont.getRequestDispatcher(url);
              reqDispatch.forward(request, response);
    }I believe that the above highlighted code section is responsible for my challenge. I have tried changing the String url to "/ferngully/prefset.jsp",
    however there was no improvement in functionality.
    Can somebody please explain to me how I can go about directing the control of this process from the servlet to the jsp correctly? Particularly
    how I can go about making the url returned to the client correct for accessing the jsp page? Do I need to delete the mapping entry for the
    jsp page in web.xml? I am new to servlets & jsp so any help will be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Kind Regards
    Davo

    3. >The following form markup is used to access the servlet:
    <form name="form1" method="post" action="ferngully/Preferences">Question 1:
         why do you specify your contextname in action attribute again ?
         General funda about urls:
         When you have an index.html loaded through http://localhost/index.html, then a link in that html whose url is,
         1. say, preferences.html (no forward slashes preffixed or suffixed) would load the html from the same folder.
         2. say, /ferngully/prefences.html, would attempt to load a html from the ferngully folder that is a sub-directory
    of your web-application
         3. say, /ferngully/prefences.jsp, would attempt to load a html from the ferngully folder that is a sub-directory
    of your web-application
         When you have a servlet whose url-pattern is set to intercept requests, it would intercept requests that have that
    pattern it is defined to intercept in web.xml (for example all the above requests in 1,2 and 3 would be intercepted
    by a servlet whose pattern is ferngully/*)
         Now if your action is not a specific resource (.jsp or .html), something like /preferences, this would map to a url
    /ferngully/preferences. (for which a resource should be defined in web.xml - either a servlet or a jsp)
    However the URL which is returned to the browser after the servlet has forwarded control to the JSP is:
    http://localhost/ferngully/ferngully/PreferencesTell us the url of the original html
    I know that I have mapped the servlet correctly because the servlet performs it's programatic tasks happily :)Tell us the url-appetrn of the servlet that intercepted your request
    Particularly
    how I can go about making the url returned to the client correct for accessing the jsp page?The url in the browser is always the request url, you cannot change it to the url of the jsp even which rendered the page
    through a fwd from the servlet.
    Do I need to delete the mapping entry for the
    jsp page in web.xml?Not necessary. You can access the jsp directly from the servlet while forwarding by
    1. specifying the exact path to the jsp. For example if the jsp is under a folder called jsps, your request dispatcher
    url ought to be /jsps/prefset.jsp
    2. specifying the jsp's url-pattern as specified in web.xml
    Questions Contd
    2. Why does the url pattern have to have a .jsp suffixed.
    From your code
    <url-pattern>/ferngully/prefset.jsp</url-pattern>It could equally well have been
    <url-pattern>/ferngully/prefset</url-pattern>And then your servlet would have to forward it to ("/ferngully/prefset")
    2. Your jsp-file mapping is in this form
    <jsp-file>/prefset.jsp</jsp-file>This assumes that the jsp is in the top-level folder of your web-application and not under
    any sub-directories. Correct ?
    cheers,
    ram.

  • How to write from a servlet to it's war file?

    We need to be able to write a file from a servlet into the document root
              area to it can be accessed by a browser. Before we used war files, we
              would simply figure out the real document root directory and write the
              file somewhere under it. How would I do this when my application is
              packaged as a war? I don't see a way to write to a "xxx.war" file and
              if we run from an exploded war, how do I determine the location of the
              document root at runtime from the servlet? I don't want to have to hard
              code the path or make each installation specifiy it in a properties
              file. It seems there should be a better way to handle this. Any ideas?

    Thanks for your help. Not to beat this to death but say I want a response that
              includes a bunch of HTML generated by a servlet or JSP and in the middle I want
              a dynamically created image. So basically I want an <image> tag in the middle
              of the html returned. Could I dynamically generate the image and add it to the
              response in the middle of the servlet/JSP processing? I thought the only option
              would be to return an html page the referred to an image via an <image> tag.
              What do you think?

  • How to navigate from a Servlet to a WebDynpro?

    Hi together,
    I've the following Problem:
    On the same EP, there are 2 deployed components:
    - a WebDynpro-Application with several Views, each in a separate iView
    - a Servlet
    Question:
    How can i navigate from the Servlet to one special iView or CustomController of the WebDynpro-Application passing a Parameter?
    I've tried to navigate using the WDPortalNavigation.navigateAbsolute()-Method, but when I create the Target-Url using the following Code, my Debugger leaves the Code uncontrolled:
    deployableObjectPart = WDDeployableObject.getDeployableObjectPart("vendor/App", "webdynproApp",WDDeployableObjectPartType.APPLICATION);
    urlToTargetApp =     WDURLGenerator.getApplicationURL(deployableObjectPart);
    Some Ideas?
    Regard
    Thomas

    Hi Thomas,
    I think you may have to use session concept here.
    check with following code
    you can use the following code to set value to the parameter.
    HttpServletRequest request = ((IWebContextAdapter) WDWebContextAdapter.getWebContextAdapter()).getHttpServletRequest();
    HttpSession session = request.getSession(true);
    session.putValue("col_id", <value>);
    This code below is used to get parameter value.
    HttpServletRequest request = ((IWebContextAdapter) WDWebContextAdapter.getWebContextAdapter()).getHttpServletRequest();
    HttpSession session = request.getSession(true);
    String Col_id =(String)session.getValue("col_id");
    Let's say the pcd location of the target page is
    pcd://portal_content/com.sap.pct/specialist/com.sap.test.pages/com.sap.test.target_pg
    In the event handler for the onAction event of the button
    String appParams = "ApplicationParameter=<your parameter name>=" + <put your value here>;
    WDPortalNavigation.navigateAbsolute(
    "ROLES://portal_content/com.sap.pct/specialist/com.sap.test.pages/com.sap.test.target_pg",
    WDPortalNavigationMode.SHOW_INPLACE,
    WDPortalNavigationHistoryMode.ALLOW_DUPLICATIONS,
    appParams,
    null,
    true,
    true);
    For more details you check the following URL. it describes on how to navigate from html/servelt to portal iview.
    Passing value from page to WD
    Reward points if it helps

  • How to call a jsp file from an servlet and access the jsp file objects??

    Hi everybody
    I have an jsp file where it contains a vector object with some data and I have a servlet that needs to access this vector object . How can my servlet call for this jsp page and get the vector object. ?
    then an applet will be calling this servlet to get some other object created with the data contained within this vector object...so each time Applet ask the servlet for the object the servlet need to call for this jsp page somehow
    My main question is the communication servlet-jsp
    please if u have any clue I will appreciate it
    thanks

    Hi
    There are several ways to share objects between JSPs/Servlets.
    You can share objects by putting them in the request-in which case the objects lifetime is limited by that of the request, Another way is to store them in the session, againg the lifetime is limited by the lifetime of the session. To have objects that have to persistent over the application life-span use the servletContext to store the objects.
    Any good tutorial should help you get started. Please see the link below for a tutorial on Servlets/JSPs
    Note: Local variables in the JSP cannot be shared with other components as their scope is limited to that particular Page/Servlet.

    I'm trying to retrieve session data which is set in a servlet and pass to a jsp. But its returning NULL . The session IDs are equal.

              PrintWriter out = res.getWriter();
              out.println(session.getId());
              out.println("<br>");
              out.println("<form>");
              String book1 = req.getParameter("book1");
              session.setAttribute("book1",book1);
              if (book1 != null)
                   out.println ("1." + book1 +"<br>");
                   out.println("<br><br><input type=\"submit\" name=\"buy\" value=\"Buy\">");
              else
                   out.println("No item to display<br>");
              out.println("&nbsp&nbsp<input type=\"submit\" name=\"back\" value=\"Back\">");
              out.println("</form>");
              RequestDispatcher page = getServletContext().getRequestDispatcher("/jsp/litemlist.jsp");
              if ((req.getParameter("buy"))!= null)
                        page.forward(req, res);
              if ((req.getParameter("back"))!= null)
                        page.forward(req, res);
         public void doGet (HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse res)throws ServletException, IOException
              doPost(req,res);
    }

    req.getParameter("book1") is not NULL and returning the value of the checkbox "book1". The problem occurs when the back button is press and try to retrieve the session value in the JSP. At that time, session.getAttribute("book1") returns NULL.
    But if i convert the servlet to JSP then everything is working fine.
    So i wanted to know if there is anything wrong in the way i store the session value in the servlet and forwarding to the JSP.
    Thanks

  • How to forward from a jsp  to another jsp on another server

    I am facing issue in forwarding to a jsp residing in another server. While using response.redirect(url), the response is send back to the browser and then redirected(which is not expected as it would create problem in production). i am facing issue while using the <jsp: forward> tag and forward() as they seem to be taking relative URL. Please help me with this issue.

    probably, you could use <c:redirect url=""/> tag to request to jsp on another server and pass ur parameters as 'GET' so that u can get all your respective params values. Other way (or crude) way is to do a scoket or HttpConnection to post your all datas via 'POST' and expect respective values on the server side.

  • How to forward from proxy

    When you are writing a proxy; after having intercepted the request/response. Two questions:
    1. if you intercepted a request and you did what you had to do; to forward the request, do you just have to open a socket connection to the web server on port 80 and send the request line per line using PrintWriter?
    2. if you intercepted a reply , you just have to open a socket connection to the client on the 'proxy port' (e.g. 8080) and again send the reply line per line with PrintWriter?
    Or am I getting it completely wrong?
    thanks

  • How to ask for a servlet response into a JSP?

    Hi guys,
    I have the following problem. I developed a servlet able to return a string with some information.
    I would like to see this information from a JSP page. In other words, I would like to encapsule in the jsp page, the info requested to the servlet.
    Is it possible? In this case the servlet returns a piece of HTML text. If there is a way, could it be possible to use the same mechanism for a JSP to ask a servlet to include a picture in the page?
    Many thanks
    /Massimo

    Is it possible? In this case the servlet returns a piece of HTML text. E.g.
    protected void doGet(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) {
        String result = "<b>result</b>";
        request.setAttribute("result", result);
        request.getRequestDispatcher("page.jsp").forward(request, response);
    }page.jsp<p>Result is: ${result}</p>If the servlet actually writes HTML to its response (not so nice) then you can use <jsp:include/> to include it in your JSP page.
    If you want to do it all asynchronously, then indeed consider AJAX.
    If there is a way, could it be possible to use the same mechanism for a JSP to ask a servlet to include a picture in the page?Write an independent servlet for that. You may find this article useful: [http://balusc.blogspot.com/2007/04/imageservlet.html].

  • Forward from action directly to anther action

    Hi all,
    I have the following problem: I have a pageflow application for administering complex configuration. On the main page (where user is forwarded from begin action, begin action reads data from configuration and fills them into form bean and main page displays them) is link for editation of part of configuration, link references to editaction which fills formbean and forwards to form for partial editation. This form submits to saveaction which stores data, and forwards to begin action directly. And here is the problem, somewhere in the portal framework between invocation of saveaction and begin following error is written into log.
    25 X 2006 16:55:58,560 ERROR ArrayIndexToken [ExecuteThread: '13' for queue: 'default'][]: Could not update expression because a public field named "operation" or setter for the property "operation" could not be found.
    I think, that this is beause form data is submitted and handled by saveaction, but because than forward to begin happens, portal tries to to fill submitted form data into formbean of begin action as well, but this formbean is different one and doesn't have corresponding properties. Both formbeans are scoped to request.
    In this particular case it causes no other problem than logging aforementioned error, but in other cases when property names would accidentaly match it may cause some problems with data, so I consider this beaviour as dangerous and want to avoid it.
    So my question is, how to forward from action to action without passing form data which were already handled by first action?

    The problem what I would like to solve is the following:
    I have some information stored on a DB. Depending of these information I would like to show different information on a jsp page with the help of jsf. (This jsp file is reached already with the help of navigation rules of jsf technology)
    An action bean class is instantiated already when the generation of my jsp file started and the information are stored on this object in member variables. There is a boolean variable among these stored information and if the value of it is true, then I would like to send the user "automatically" to another jsp file (using the navigation rules of jsf).
    If I would not use jsf, then I would do something like the following:
    I would store the value of the boolean variable into the session, and I would use a jstl "if " tag to ask the value of this variable and when it would be true then I would use a <jsp:forward...> to send the user to the next page.
    My problem is I can not solve this with the jsf navigation rules?
    If I try to do something similar with jsf than #{myClass.newPage} is not accepted by jsp:forward tag of course, but I do not know a solution instead of it in jsf.
    Is exist a solution in jsf for it?
    If not, how can I create a similar sequence?

  • Passing parameter to a jsp from a servlet

    Hi,
    I need to pass a parameter from a servlet to a jsp without using the session object. Is it possible? I've been looking for a method like response.setParameter but it doesn't exist.
    Please help !!!

    Actually, there is no setParameter method in the ServletRequetsObject. Still, you can create one. This can be usefull when you have a jsp that get its parameters from either a direct html form posting or a forward from a servlet. This can be achieved using wrappers, instead of the real request object.
    It's not really tricky, it's only a little "underknown" feature.
    Here is a sample code when you can fake the settings of requets parameters :
    public class MyRequest extends HttpServletRequestWrapper {
       private HashMap fakedParameters;
       public MyRequest(HttpServletRequest nested) {
          super(this);
          fakedParameters=new HashMap();
        public void setParameter(String key,String value) {
            fakedParameters.put(key,value);
        public String getParameter(String name) {
           String res=fakedParameter.get(name):
           if (res==null)
               res=super.getParameter(name);
           return res;
    }NB: this is a sample, you may also override other method (such as getParameterNames) for a full featuerd wrapped request.
    Now, you can use your wrapped request :
    MyRequest req2=new MyRequest(request);
    RequestDispatcher dispatcher=request.getRequestDispatcher("/somePage.jsp");
    req2.setParameter("name","yourName");
    dispatcher.formard(req2,response);Hope it helps.

    Only can confirm your finding - the jsp is using a different class loader to the servlet that originally instantiated the object. There's the rub. I haven't figured out yet how to fix that. I can get the classloader but don't know how to get the runtime to use that class loader to perform cast.

    You could probably use setAttribute
              ..before forwarding the control to JSP.
              req.setAttribute("message", "Hello, world");
              ServletContext app = getServletContext();
              RequestDispatcher disp;
              disp = app.getRequestDispatcher("Dispmessage.jsp");
              Cheers,
