Passing parameter to a jsp from a servlet

Hi,
I need to pass a parameter from a servlet to a jsp without using the session object. Is it possible? I've been looking for a method like response.setParameter but it doesn't exist.
Please help !!!

Actually, there is no setParameter method in the ServletRequetsObject. Still, you can create one. This can be usefull when you have a jsp that get its parameters from either a direct html form posting or a forward from a servlet. This can be achieved using wrappers, instead of the real request object.
It's not really tricky, it's only a little "underknown" feature.
Here is a sample code when you can fake the settings of requets parameters :
public class MyRequest extends HttpServletRequestWrapper {
   private HashMap fakedParameters;
   public MyRequest(HttpServletRequest nested) {
      super(this);
      fakedParameters=new HashMap();
    public void setParameter(String key,String value) {
        fakedParameters.put(key,value);
    public String getParameter(String name) {
       String res=fakedParameter.get(name):
       if (res==null)
           res=super.getParameter(name);
       return res;
}NB: this is a sample, you may also override other method (such as getParameterNames) for a full featuerd wrapped request.
Now, you can use your wrapped request :
MyRequest req2=new MyRequest(request);
RequestDispatcher dispatcher=request.getRequestDispatcher("/somePage.jsp");
req2.setParameter("name","yourName");
dispatcher.formard(req2,response);Hope it helps.

  • Executing a jsp from a servlet

    Hello all
    I am a starter to JSP.
    In an application I am developing, I have a servlet which receives a request from a form. If the user asks for a tabular representation of data (from the database), I want to use a JSP to display such a table since that way, I do not have to write all those out.printlns used in a servlet.
    So is there a way to either pass control to a jsp from a servlet? I want to pass a hashtable and some data to the jsp from the servlet.
    Please help with possible suggestions and code.
    thanks a lot....
    Mahesh :)

    There is the RequestDispatcher object to forward request to another resource (as servlet or jsp).
    If in your servlet you code:
    RequestDispatcher rd=getServletContext().getRequestDispatcher("your JSP URL");//instantiate a RequestDispatcher object
    //sets Hastable as request attribute
    request.setAttribute("yourAttributeName",yourHashtableName);
    rd.forward(request,response);//forwards control to jsp
    In your JSP you will retrieve Hashtable by following code:
    Hastable ht=(Hashtable)request.getAttribute("yourAttributeName");

  • Looking for a way to pass parameter to external list from infopath

    Hey, i have a Sharepoint 2010 list for which I want to create Infopath form. I have an external content type and external list based on it.
    I want to prepopulate some fields in my Sharepoint list with data from external list. I tried to use external list as a secondary data source and query it for needed values. The issue I encounter is that my ECT has a finder with filter and I can't figure
    out how to pass a value to this filter within infopath.
    How can it be done with infopath? How can I pass the filter value to the external list using Infopath?

    Hi,
    According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to pass parameter to external list from infopath.
    You need to query the external list from InfoPath using coding and CAML Query.
    Here is a similar thread for your reference:

  • Accessing String assigned in a JSP from a Servlet?

    Hello all, I was wondering if there is a way to access a String object that was assigned by an HttpSession object in a JSP from a Servlet. What happens is, in my application a user logs in, an HttpSession object is instantiated and all of the user credentials are assigned within a JSP like:
    HttpSession httpSession = request.getSession( false );
    String userName = httpSession.getAttribute("userName);
    ...{code}
    Next, I have a Servlet (which is really just a Proxy to a different server), that I need to log some information with, namely the userName String. Is there a way I can access that String without instantiating another HttpSession object? Because when the timeout occurs (or when the user clears his cache I have found), the HttpSession becomes invalidated (even if I use  +HttpSession#getSession( true )+) and the +HttpSession#getAttribute+ call fails (userName is just null). So is this possible to do?
    Thanks in advance!

    Normally a session doesn't go dead after login.
    I imagine that by using application scope the app would confuse the userName with other users that are logged in?Certainly. It was just an example. But your data clearly belongs in the session, so just keep it in the session. If the session get invalidated while it should not get invalidated, then your problem truly lies somewhere else.
    I am definitely not arguing you latter point either :) A lot of this code I inherited unfortunately from previous developers and we are in desperate need of a redesign.I wish you much luck with that.

  • Generating the JSP from the Servlet source file

    Hi,
    Does anyone out there know if there is any utility/class/program which will generate a JSP from the Servlet Source file (.java file) or indeed from the compiled Servlet file (.class file)
    If its possible to decompile a .class file into a .java file, surely it must be possible to convert the .java souce file into the .jsp file that created it.
    any comments would be appreciated
    Richard

    I am the author of the original JSP!
    But I want to run a script on the generated Servlet source file,
    changing its contents, and then generate the JSP that would have created the new Servlet source file.
    but I need to know if theres anything that will reverse engineer a Servlet source into the generating JSP.
    its a kind of of Jeopardy type thing!

  • How to pass a object of JSP to a servlet called from JSP

    Hi,
    I am trying to display an image in the JSP through html image tag. I am using Struts Action class to get the image data from the database through a Session EJB. I am getting a byte array for the image retrieved from the database.
    To display the image I need to call a servlet from the JSP from the image tag like this.
    <html:img src="imageservlet" border="0"/>
    But I need to send the image byte [] array data which is available with the JSP to the servlet to build image. I have a bean object with the JSP which holds the image byte []. The servlet should receive the bean object and will use the byte [] and build the image to be displayed.
    My query here is how to send this bean object to the servlet which is getting called from the JSP as shown above.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    Thanks for your response. I knew it is possible with session objects. But I want to perform this operation with out using session objects. Is there a way to accomplish this with out using Session objects.
    Please help.

  • Syntax to pass parameter value to jsp using href in out.println

    Hi,
    I have the URL in the form as mentioned below:
    <a href="b2c/marketing/showDocDetail.jsp"> <%=doc_no%></a>
    I've created the hyperlink using href tag to the document number in the jsp using the below syntax.
    <% String a1 = "Document ";
           String a2 = "<a href=\"";
           String a3 = "marketing/showDocDetail.jsp\">";
           String a4 = doc_no;
           String a5 = "</a>";
    out.println(a1a2a3a4a5);
    %>
    When clicked the doc_no is passed to backend RFC and export parameter is retrieved to result.jsp where values along with doc_no are displayed.
    the value after clicked is not being passed to action.java class that does the retreival.
    Needful, backend class, bom, entry in config.xml is all maintained.
    Please help me out with the syntax to pass the parameter value into java class

    Hi Bharathi,
    try below.
    <%
           String a1 = "Document ";
           String a2 = "<a href=\"";
           String a3 = "marketing/showDocDetail.do?docNo=";
           String a4 = doc_no;
           String a5 = " \">";
           String a6 = doc_no;
           String a7 = "</a>";
    out.println(a1+a2+a3+a4+a5+a6+a7);
    %>
    I assume doc_no is java variable contains value of document number
    Now create action entry in config.xml file. Suppose "actionDoc.java" class process it.
    <action path="/marketing/showDocDetail" type="com.xyz.actions.actionDoc">
                   <forward name="success" path="/marketing/showDocDetail.jsp"/>
                   <forward name="error" path="/marketing/showDocDetail.jsp"/>
    </action>
    We are passing parameter docNo=doc_no to action class actionDoc.java in this class you can retrieve request parameter docNo from request object and then process it as you want.
    Let me know if you face any problem or error.

  • Passing parameter value via href in a servlet to another servlet

    Hi
    I have this issue with passing a value from one servlet to another servlet. the situation is is this.
    i have a servlet tstret.java which say..pulls out all the employee_id(s) from a table and displays it as hyperlinks( using the anchor tag.).
    now when i click on the hyperlink say T001 , The control is passed to another servlet which pulls out all the info about employee id T001.
    the problem i have is in the tstret.java servlet. i am passing the employee_id as a parameter in the href path itself as shown below.
    out.println("<td ><a href=\"http://localhost:7000/servlets-examples/accept_requisition.html?id="+[u]rs.getString(1)[/u]+"\" ><em>"+rs.getString(1)+"</em></a></td>");now if you see the code i am trying to pass the employee_id by attaching it to a variable id and passing it with the url, it gives me a sql exception saying no data found .
    if i pass a string say "rajiv" which i defined at the begining of code then i am able to pass it to the next servlet/html.
    the full code is as follows
    file : tstret.java
    import java.io.*;
    import java.sql.*;
    import javax.servlet.*;
    import javax.servlet.http.*;

              out.println("</table></body></html>");
         public void doPost(HttpServletRequest request,HttpServletResponse response)throws ServletException,IOException
              doGet(request, response);
              Can some one help me and see if there is anything i missing or doing wrong.
    thanks in advance

    Try storing the id at the top of the loop, then using that for the URL and the link text, instead of calling rs.getString(1) twice:
      while(rs.next())
        String emp_id = rs.getString(1);
        out.println(" <tr align=\"center\">");
        out.println("<td ><a href=\"accept_requisition.html?id="+emp_id+"\" ><em>"+emp_id+"</em></a></td>");
        out.println("</tr>");
        out.println("<br />");
      }

  • How to pass parameter between two jsp pages using web link (not form)

    Hi Friends,
    I have two jsp pages and would like to pass a parameter from one JSP page (one.jsp) to another JPS page (two.jsp)
    in one.jsp
    <a href="two.jsp?ant="<%=ant%">"> <%=antName%> </a><br>
    I don't know how to pass value of parameter "ant" to two.jsp from one.jsp.
    Can anyone help this? Thank you in advance</a>

    Looks like you've got it almost right - just an extra unneeded "
    <a href="two.jsp"?ant=<%= ant %>"><%=antName%></a>
    which should render on the page as something like
    My Ant Task
    When you click the link, it should pass that parameter, and you can get it via request.getParameter().

    I have run the first.jsp in the sample that JPDK provided. After each click, the screen will refresh.
    null

    Leo,
    The error you are getting is actually a portal error, you have an incorrect URL.
    http://oraas2:80/pls/null/!null.wwpob_page.show?_pageid=null
    If you notice, after pls, you should have a DAD name such as portal30. Instead you have null. Take a look at your Database access descriptors in Portal and update your URL.

  • Passing parameter to custom JSP page

    From an appraisal, I am adding a link thru personalization that opens a custom JSP page in a new window. I somehow need to pass the appraisal_id context from the old page to the new page so the new page displays the appropriate information.

  • Passing parameter to VB Script from Java file

    I have a jhtml(read java) page which is trying to create a virtual directory in IIS. The servlet container run on IIS. I have a VB Script file (.vbs) which creates the virtual directory. Now the vbs file needs a parameter to create a new directory every time and the directory name should be the parameter name. I am able to run the vbs from java but the parameter passing doesn't work.
    String acctname = "test";
    String path = "d:/ScriptTool/CreateAccountWebIIS.vbs";
    String fullpath = path+" "+ "/c:"+acctname;
    System.out.println("path = "+fullpath);
    Process process1;
    Runtime userRuntime = Runtime.getRuntime();
    try
    process1 = userRuntime.exec("wscript.exe " + fullpath);
    discussed options
    1) convert vbs to exe
    2) use batch file

    If you're creating a string that is going to be used as a file name by a Windows program on a Windows command line, then you have to use the backslash to separate directories in the path.String path = "d:\\ScriptTool\\CreateAccountWebIIS.vbs";Forward slashes are okay (actually, preferred) in Java code for use by Java classes but once you hand it over to Windows you do need to follow the Windows rules.
