How to Go Beyond iWeb, But Not Too Far Beyond...

Hi Everyone,
I'm a big fan of iWeb, and it's really been such a great tool to help me create http://www.armansworld.com/my site. It works seamlessly with MobileMe and my personal domain, and honestly makes life so much better. I don't know advanced web design, CSS, and whatnot, plus having an automated blog and everything is great. Without it, there's no way I could produce such a site like I have now.
However, I am learning how to make my own HTML customizations, adding Javascript and other features and such to my site. But that causes clashes with iWeb.
For example, I was able to create a http://m.armansworld.com/mobile version of my website optimized for iPhone and iPod Touch. I did some research on the web and found a script that would automatically detect mobile browsers and redirect them to my mobile site. The script is great and it works. The trouble is implementing it.
iWeb doesn't help at all when you want to put custom HTML into the page—not "embedding" something, but BUILDING it in. So I open up the index.html with Dashcode and put in the additional code, which works fine. That is, until I make a change to my site and iWeb totally overrides my code, so I have to go in and put it again. Every single time. Not cool.
Which leads to another pet peave of mine about iWeb. The thing I hate the most is the fact that by default iWeb sets up the index files so that www.yourdomain.com redirects to www.yourdomain.com/yoursitename which redirects to www.yourdomain.com/yoursitename/yourfirstpage. Why don't I like it? It's because that causes my site to be bookmarked as the whole long link. Which is alright, except what if I change something? What if I change the site name, or I change the Welcome page? If I change anything then when someone tries to use the bookmark they'll get a "Page Not Found" message. I don't want that!
If iWeb could be normal and have your first page actually be located at www.yourdomain.com/index.html, that would be wonderful. I'd be much happier anyway.
So I confess: my site index.html is totally my work. It's simply a "window", a frame into my site—the link at the top never changes, it always shows www.armansworld.com. Of course I give up easy access to unique links for viewers, but I avoid trouble with future changes vs. bookmarks. So every time I update my site, I have to go in and re-do the index.html file.
Point being, I'm going beyond the entire "visual thing" and starting to want to implement my own code into webpages, however I can't do that without iWeb overriding my work. On the other hand, I'm not skilled enough to maintain the site myself without the help of iWeb. What I'd love is a compromise—a plug-in or something for iWeb that allows you to make custom code additions to any part of the page, which iWeb will totally leave alone, so you can continue to use iWeb for the site yet also make your own modifications. Modifications beyond iWeb and it's ability.
Sorry for the rant—but does anyone know of anything or have any ideas? I'd really appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks.

Unfortunately, that is the way iWeb is and has been since iWeb 06. I assume that you are publishing directly to MobileMe when you do?
If you want to make 'custom' changes and add your own code, then when you do this, you cannot publish directly to MMe - to stop these changes being overridden, as you have found when publishing directly, go to iWeb and select the publish to a local folder option rather than ftp to MMe. Your site will then be published to your desktop.
Next download a copy of Cyberduck which is a dedicated ftp program and use this to upload your site to MMe - you need to select the webdav option to do this though as you are uploading to MMe.
If you upload your site in this way, then the changes that you implement by using html in a snippet or otherwise will not be overridden - this is how most people implement stats when using iWebSEO - they publish to a folder on the desktop from iWeb, use iWebSEO and then use this to upload their site.
This is the way you have to do it with iWeb - if you want to customise it then you can't upload directly, as you have found your site gets overridden.

    due to the lack of an autodownload for JRE 1.4 I am forced to use another method for installing it. Does anyone know a way to check what JRE version the user has using some sort of web scripting? I've seen examples of how to check within an applet or application - but I don't really want to do that.

    anyone know a way to check what JRE version the user
    has using some sort of web scripting? Looking at Sun's download pages for the JRE, I can't see that kind of JRE identification, and those guys should know how to do it.
    It makes sense, because if it existed, it means that it is possible by a web site to spy your system.
    What is possible to have some applets running on a page, and a submit button next to where the user can answer the question, if the applet is running properly. E.g. put up an 1.3 applet with some animation and an 1.4 applet with an animation. The let the user hit that submit button where the animation plays properly.
    This way the user discloses the information to your site, that's technical possible and ok. Spying is not.
    I'm not sure how the latest installers by Sun work, might be some active X based spying installer, which reports the proper config. :-)

    In v.11, how can I capture video but not audio from a camera?

    Rodney
    I see what you mean....Premiere Elements 10 appears to be the last version that had options for the user to select Capture Video and/or Audio in the its Capture Window.
    If you are doing DV data capture firewire into the Premiere Elements 11 Capture Windows and want a final file without audio and you cannot do this at the camera level, then consider....
    1. Do the Capture "to the Timeline" - video linked to audio result on the project's Video Track 1
    a. Right click the Timeline DV AVl and select Delete Audio and then edit accordingly.
    or
    b. Import the DV AVI but, when you go to export it, in the export settings, remove the check mark next to Audio so that the export contains only the video portion.
    Publish+Share/Computer/AVI with Presets = DV NTSC Standard
    Please let us know if any of that worked for you.
    Thank you.

  • An enemy to follow me around the screen but not too fast

    Hi I'm building English teaching apps but through games.
    I'd like a BUG enemy to follow me around but NOT TOO fast as I have little kids of 5 years old using this,
    Would it be something like get the coordinates of my HERO character and send the BUG there.
    I use POINT at the moment to send my HERO to where the mouse clicks.
    Could I send the BUG there as well but using less x and y increments.
    Would this be too much for the processor - too much going on with music playing as well?

    again, don't remove it:
    var speed:Number=.99;
    public function onEnterFrame(event:Event):void {
    var xDistance:Number=clickPoint.x-this.hero.x;
    var yDistance:Number=clickPoint.y-this.hero.y;
    if (Math.abs(xDistance)>10) {
    var angle:Number=Math.atan2(yDistance,xDistance);
    this.hero.x+=v*Math.cos(angle);
    this.hero.y+=v*Math.sin(angle);
    } else {
    this.hero.gotoAndPlay("static");
    enemy1.x = speed*enemy1.x+(1-speed)*hero.x;
    enemy1.y = speed*enemy1.y+(1-speed)*hero.y;
    if (clickPoint.x>=hero.x) {
    this.hero.gotoAndPlay("right");
    //trace(Math.abs(xDistance));
    if (this.hero.x>=clickPoint.x) {

  • How come my comments are visible in iweb but not on published site?

    I published my site (after many frustrating attempts and publish errors) and had allowed comments. I made a blog entry and published to .mac and found out from a friend that that particular entry didn't have an option to add a comment. I tried to republish many times - I don't know how it happened but the comment option showed up eventually. I had the same thing happen again today so I tried publishing again but this time I tried publishing to a folder. Not sure if this caused the problem but now one comment on the blog disappeared and the rest are only visible in iweb and not on the published site - on the published site there isn't an opportunity to add comments where they used to be. Can I get the comments back on my site?
    Thank you for any help.
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Oh, rats. Do I need to remove the folder that I published to? I'm not even sure where to find it. I have republished successfully with the comments still in iweb but they don't show up on-line. I'd really like to get them back on if possible.

  • Comments show in iWeb, but not on published site (on Mobileme)

    Does anyone know how I can get the comments I see on my blog entries in the iWeb app to show up on my website when published (I'm using Apple's Mobileme service).
    They have always worked in the past, and I recently redesigned the site. I changed the theme from a predesigned one to the blank white one (and then designed my own look). As stated before I can see the people's comments in iWeb, but when I published all the previous entries (in the new design), the comments aren't showing in the archive page nor the individual entry pages. Is there a fix?

  • How to block text messages but not calls from a specific number

    I want to block text messages from my father but not his phone calls. Is there a way to do this? I have an iPhone 5, but don't want to upgrade to IOS7 yet.
    Thanks!

        You have a fantastic phone, joy3141. I double checked features for the iPhone 5 and confirmed there's not a way to block messages from a specific contact without blocking calls too. Our Call & Message Blocking http://vz.to/MqEgqB is a great way to block unwanted contact from specific numbers, but it would block both calls & messages. If your dad is on your account and you're hoping to block all of his text messages to or from anyone, there is a text message block available at www.vzw.com/serviceblocks you can add to his line.

  • On iPod Touch, how can I view calendars but not sync them?

    I have thirteen years of calendar events in iCal on my desktop Mac, dating back to year 2000, divided between three calendars. A quite large amount of calendar data, admittedly. I sync to my iPod Touch via iCloud.  Problem is that, if I select "Sync All Events" in the Settings of the iPod, my iPod apparently constantly is trying to sync thirteen years, resulting in unbearably slow performance, with intolerably long lag before calendars "sync" and before new entries resolve.
    Of course, if I select the alternative iPod Calendar Setting "Sync Events Six Months Back", my iPod performs swiftly, efficiently... after all, it's not like I'm editing old events from years ago. However, by doing so, events older than 6 months cannot be viewed on the iPod Touch.
    I suppose most people aren't concerned with preserving older calendar events in a viewable form, but I have need to do so on my iPod Touch. I don't need to spend unbelievable amount of waiting time while my iPod processes (i.e., "syncs") all my old calendar events ; I simply wish to be able to see the darn things! So, how do I maintain fast performance AND ability to view all my calendar events quickly?
    I hope this makes sense. If anyone has an idea how I can achieve this, I will be greatly appreciative. Obviously, on my desktop Mac I have no problem viewing any date in iCal that I choose to view. On my iPod, though, can I set up separate calendar in which I can store but not sync the older calendar stuff? Or, do I need some separate app to preserve and view my older calendars?
    Thanks.

    Try the following:
    - A reset. Nothing is lost
    Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    If you still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order

  • How do I share itunes, but not our contacts with two iphones

    My son just got a new iphone and we want to share our itunes, but not our contacts. When I set up his phone I put it on my account and now all of my contacts are on his phone! How do I fix it and share our itunes account? Help please!

    1. You would have to delete your account on his device in "Settings > iCloud" (where he should use his own account for Mail, Contacts, Calendars etc.).
    2. In order to use the same account for iTunes and App Store purchases, just set up the same account in "Settings > iTunes & App Stores".
    By the way, if you set up his device by using your Apple ID, please check also the settings for iMessage (Settings > Messages > Send & Receive) and FaceTime (Settings > FaceTime), because I guess that you acceidentally used your Appl ID also for the set up of this services.

  • Photo Albums showing up in iWeb but not in published site

    I'm publishing to an FTP server using Transmit. The site address is chrisfitzgeraldmusic.com . All of the other pages publish perfectly, but the photo albums page has never published correctly. In the past, some albums have shown up, others haven't. Within the ones that showed up, some pictures were displayed while others weren't. Just today I tried to fix this by deleting all the albums and putting in a single iPhoto album which I also rebuilt. The album displays perfectly in iWeb, but shows up as a blank photo albums page when I publish it to the FTP server. Any ideas? I'm at my wits end.

    For some reason not all of the files are getting uploaded. Publish to a folder on your hard drive and open the site with your browser to make sure the photos and albums are getting created as they should.
    If you using iWeb's ftp client to upload to your server then try publishing to a folder on the hard drive first and use a 3rd party ftp client like the freeCyberduck or Transmit to upload the files to the server. This might help also: Old Toad's Tutorial #2 - Uploading only those published new or newly edited files when using a 3rd party FTP client.
    If you are already publishing to a folder what ftp client are you using? If it's not Cyberduck give it a try. It's well thought of here in the forums.

  • Adding pages, lost everything in iweb but not on web itself,

    Okay, so I am new, did the tutorial to set up a web site. Had four pages finished, three already published, did not publish the fourth. I then went to add a photo page and all other pages are gone on the iweb building area. The first three pages are on the web, but not listed in the site organizer. Now what do I do to save the pages on the web when I publish and to return the web pages to my site organizer. yikes!! I spent hours on this project and am worried I will lose it all. thanks

    Go to Varkgirl's site and download her Automator backup application. It creates a copy of the Domain.sites file and puts it where you want. A smart thing to do after any session with iWeb.
    Also if you expect to have multiple sites you might think about using iWebSites. It's to iWeb as iPhoto Library Manager is to iPhoto.
    I use iWebSites to manage multiple sites.. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
    If you have multiple sites in one domain file here's the workflow I used to split them into individual site files with iWebSites. Be sure to make a backup copy of your Domain.sites files before starting the splitting process.
    This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want.

  • How can I show competitor but not competitor products in Opportunity?

    In CRM 2007 SP6 I would like to display competitors on an opportunity, but not competitor product.
    The component BT111H_OPPT has two sets of views - Competitor* and CompetitorProd*, which as the name would suggest shows either competitor info or competitor and product info.
    The challenge is that the CompetitorProd* set of views is being used but I want the Competitor* set and don't know how to make that happen. Does anyone have experience with these views?
    Thanks,
    Dana

    Hi Dana,
    this is possible in Opportunity Management.
    The design was done the way that in any case you will have a item created where the competitor is assigned to. this is even the case when you don´t use products at all.
    the customizing is done on the transaction type level.
    goto to transaction type customizing / customize header. There you can find the "Competitor Mode".
    The mode allows to be "header mode" or "item mode".
    if you select header mode the assignment (block) is visible on header level, else on item level.
    hope this helps
    best
