How to injest RED ONE camera footage in FCP?

Hi there,
I have downloaded the necessary drivers from the RED website and I am expecting to receive the files from the director off of his hard drive this week.
What should I be expecting in terms of files for an offline edit? Is there a link or process to view the steps to inject into FCP?
Thanks!
Steven

I am a whatever works for you guy...but at the same time I think it's important to consider once you are working with Red or 10bit source PRHQ may be your friend.
RED FCP Whitepaper:
Method 1: Transcoding to ProRes 422
You may choose to transcode R3D media to ProRes 422 or ProRes 422 (HQ) compressed QuickTime files. ProRes 422 is suitable for creating lower-quality files for offline editing, but ProRes 422 (HQ) is recommended for higher-quality mastering. You can set this up by opening the Log and Transfer window’s Import Preferences dialog.
• ProRes 422 (HQ) – Suitable for ingest and mastering of high-quality chroma- subsampled/YʼCbCr color space media for high definition broadcast masters.
• ProRes 422 – Suitable for ingest and mastering of high-quality chroma-subsampled/ YʼCbCr color space media for standard definition broadcast masters, or good-quality mastering at HD resolutions.
This workflow describes transcoding your REDCODE media to 2K resolution Apple ProRes clips, and then mastering using Apple ProRes.
• Advantage — This is a straightforward workflow with no reconforming necessary. Editing using the Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) codec is simple and efficient, especially for programs that are destined for output to a YʼCbCr-based tape format.

  • RED ONE camera to FCP to compressor for DVD

My client used RED ONE camera for filming. He used FCP to edit it then exported it in 1920x1080 Apple ProRes 422 (HQ). He sent it to me by mail (external HD) for me to use that QT movie Apple ProRes 422 for Compressor to compress it into SD DVD MPEG-2 5.0 2-pass with Progressive (Best Quality). I used DVD Studio Pro and found it very unsatisfied with the quality of video because I'm seeing a lot of pixels around those letters during open/close credits. Not only that, I also see a lot of bad interlaced video. I set it up for Progressive and YET I'm still seeing interlaced in it. What's did I do wrong? How can I make it the best quality video for SD DVD from Red One camera or Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)? I know Blue-ray is the best answer but a lot of my costumers don't own blue-ray dvd player. (I'm sure you're aware that HD DVD don't work on any DVD players, only on Mac computer which is very unfortunate for me!) Please help! I'm flirting the deadline right now:)

    1. Take your sequence into an uncompressed 720x480 16x9 anamorphic sequence. It needs to be 720x480 first since thats the resolution of NTSC DVD - create a 720x480 uncompressed 16x9 anamorphic sequence
    2. With a bitrate calculator, you would need to determine the best bitrate. How long is your DVD? (include menus as well) plug it into the calc. here's a good one:
    http://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm
    3. Export out through compressor as an MPEG2 file and the bitrates from above. make sure you match field order of your source if interlaced
    4. Import into DVDSP and author away

  • RED One camera: is someone using it and how?

I'm curious to find out more about users editing RED One footage in Final Cut Pro on Mac. All I saw was a demo at the Apple booth at IBC in Amsterdam in September.
I browsed their MacPro a bit but I couldn'f figure out what RAW images were used.
    What are the REDCODE experiences?
    What are the prores results?

One very cool thing is that the RED Camera creates quicktime wrappers for it's native .R3D files so that you can immediately watch back the 4K clips by using proxy files. So if you have, say, a MacBook Pro on set when you are shooting, you can download the files from the memory card and view them in realtime using a 2K, 1K, or .5K proxy.

  • MacPro and Editing Red Camera footage in FCP

Hi, I'm looking to but a Mac Pro, but am not sure the most economical spec required to edit 4K fotage from the Red, Rendering etc. I don't want frustration. I'm looking at 8-Core,4.64GHz, 16G RAM, but would the 1G video card from Apple the work for this or do I need a Ndivia 1G card? I'm told I need to get the 1G Ndivia...is that so?

1 - Will I be able to edit with both the Panasonic and Sony footage in my timeline??
Yes, but what is your intended timeline format? You might want to transcode the XDCAM HD to DCPRO HD and edit in a DVCPRO HD timeline rather than visa versa, or perhaps transcode both the XDCAM HD and DVCPRO HD sources to your intermediate tiemline format just to make your life easier.
2 - Do I need extra software to play the Sony XD Cam footage??
No, assuming you are running FCP 5.1.2 or later, but if you will need to ingest the footage from XDCAM disc yourself then you'll need Sony's free XDCAM Transfer software to bring it in.
3 - is there something else that could cause a problem??
I guess a freak wave could come out of nowhere ...

  • RED ONE Standards Coversion for FCP

I have an underwater photographer shooting on a RED ONE and he wants to shoot 25 as he is in Australia which is PAL. The footage is being shared between us, but we will be editing in FCP in an HD NTSC 29.97 sequence to match our other footage.
Is converting from 29.97 to 25 or 25 to 29.97 a better option? Or is there a better shooting mode that will convert to both better?

If you shoot 25p, you can conform the footage in Cinema Tools to 23.98fps, and add 3:2 pulldown to get it to 29.97fps for NTSC timeline.
If you shoot 24p (23.98fps default on the RED) you can just added 3:2 pulldown to get to 29.97fps for NTSC timeline.
    Either way will work fine.
To add 3:2 pulldown, you can output a 24p timeline to tape in FCP, or you add it with a render process using one of my plugins for instance. I'd avoid placing 24p directly onto a NTSC timeline as that just dupes frames in FCP and tends to look bad.
Is there a need for the final product to also go to PAL? If so, what is the exact format of the HD footage on the 29.97fps timeline? For dual PAL / NTSC production, it's usually best to keep everything 24p / 25p as via conform and pulldown you can go either way with minimal picture quality issues.

  • My iPod has two small dots on it. The first one is red and the other is white. The red one came first and a few weeks later the white one showed up. Can I take it to the Apple store and have it exchanged?

I've had it for less than a year and noticed a few weeks ago that it had a red dot on the center of the screen. About a week ago I noticed another dot, a white one, right next to it. I've never dropped it and even went out of my way to buy a decent case to keep it safe. I spent over 200$ on my 4Gen iPod Touch it and I'm very concerned that these dots will spread across my screen. Can I send it to the Apple store by me and have it replaced?

Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store and find out. If defective, within warranty and not abused Apple may exchange it at no cost.

Im sorry for annoying you with this question - I tried to do a search for this but Im not sure what wording I should use... also the manual confused me a bit...
I have footage in Final Cut Pro that I would like to add font over it... now Im not sure how to do that... So i export the whole clip to LIveType? I tried that but it didnt work (place - Place background)????
Is it possible for someone to guide me through this task - or point me in the right direction please, i'd greatly appreciate it.

    Hey,
Thanks alot for the reply - appreciate you giving me a hand on this subject - is there an online version of this book? As I do not have the "Final Cut STudio WorkFlows" I bought the final cut off Ebay and it didnt come with that. So just wondering there is maybe an online version of that book? or maybe there is an article on this forum (which I am sure someone asked this question before) however when I tried to do a search I didnt find anything to help me out.

  • Synchronize 2 camera footage -- How to nudge smaller than frame increments

When synchronizing dual camera footage in FCP, my method of lining up audio events, how do I nudge the tracks closer together without snapping to the frame? In Pro Tools, it is called Spot editing. I can't find info about this in FCP Help. Sorry for the newbie question. Thanks for your help.

With video you can only edit down to the frame level. In fact I don't know of any video editors that let you move beyond frames as that's how video operates. You can edit and slip audio on a sub-frame level. Look in the manual under sub-frame audio editing for an explanation on how to do it as it's a tricky (but useful) feature.

  • RED ONE digital camera...

Has anyone used a RED digital camera with FCP?
    RED Camera specs: http://www.red.com/cameras/tech_specs/
If so, how does FCP handle those resolutions (4900 x 2580) and frame rates (120 fps)? I watched a recent BluRay (Red Dwarf - Back to Earth) and was VERY impressed with the quality -- apparent RED camera's were used to shoot the footage. These cameras cost a fraction of the $250,000 Movie studio cameras at somewhere around $20,000-$25,000 US.
Would love to hear from anyone who's had experience with this camera and even more so someone who's worked on post production footage.
    Thanks, Rob.

Yes the RedOne is a fantastic camera, but as Shane pointed out, it is really a professional tool meant to replace 35mm - not HD video. That isn't to say it can't be done - and it will certainly make some super nice HD video, but the cost of entry is still pretty high, even if it is much less than a comparable film camera (and all the processing/scanning involved there).
More important than the 4k numbers though is the fact that it shoots what is effectively RAW video - allowing for a lot of post processing/grading/vfx. Check out District 9 - while not all of it was shot on Red (the docu stuff was done on an HD Sony camera I believe - a much less $$ one than Red) a lot of the FX sequences were.
Keep a lookout for the Red Scarlet which should be available soon. That will offer 3k in a much smaller and more "prosumer" friendly package, without sacrificing the RAW capabilities. They are going to be making special "mini-prime" lenses for it too - should be a great replacement for DSLRs shooting H264.

  • Can I use Red Cam footage in FCE4

An actor friend of mine has shot a short film with a Red Cam and wants me to edit it.  I assume I'll have to convert it, but can I bring that footage into FCE4, and if so what codec should I use?  And how do I convert it, what program should be used.  When I'm finished editing what codec should I use to export it.  He wants to enter this film in some festivals so we want the quality to be as good as possible.  How will the finished exported quality compare to the original Red Cam footage?  I assume there will be a quality loss, but how much?  And are there any other issues I should be aware of?  Thanks very much--jqs

I don't know whether it will work with some sort of workflow that substitutes AIC foor Pro Res or not. I referred  you to the FCP article so you would see there are a number of moving parts involved. Although I don't know of FCE users editing RED, that's not to say it can't be done. Try some work-arounds and see (and let us know). Alternatively If you know someone with FCP, possibly they would allow you to cut it on their system?
    Good luck.
    Russ
BTW, I don't think it's possible to unmark this question as solved. If you're not getting views because people assume it's closed, you could always post another question.

  • Importing RED camera footage into CS4

I've downloaded a plug in for CS4 and all the other RED camera footage imported in fine (9 out of 10 files) expect for the last file. Here's a picture of the file names:
When I try to import these files (either through file > import) or Media Browser I get the message that the file format is not supported. Does anybody have any idea of what I could do?
    Thanks!

    Robodog2,
I finally got back to my office and was able to send JIm a screenshot of the issue as the file was too big to send (1GB).
The file marked A010_C001_10172V_001.R3D is the one that should import into Premiere Cs4 but as you can tell from the screen shot above, it will not.
    Any help will be appreciated.

    1. I have an iPod which has purchases synced with I tunes with an apple ID. I now have an iPad with a new ID for cloud. I have cloud storage capacity of 5gb which came with the iPad. How can I use one ID and store my existing music in cloud?

    HI Frostyfrog
CHeck out iTunes Match which has an annual fee of £21 or thereabouts. You can store a maximum of 25,000 songs there and they all become available on your other kit, iPhone, iPad and iPod. I know it works as I have over 23000 songs uploaded of which only a few we're bought through iTunes.
it works by comparing your music to the whole iTunes music dadata base so you access the same tunes that you could get from iTunes. If you have obscure stuff, it uploads your own music to the cloud as a copy.
I Find it incredible that on my iPhone with its 16gb memory I can view almost 200 gb of music (ie my 23000 songs) and play any of them. Anything I add to iTunes becomes available via the cloud fairly quickly from a few minutes or a little longer if adding a lot.
The first time you use it it will take quite a while to match your music if you have a lot, but after that it is all automatic. Read the stuff on the apple site. Your PC needs to be at least running Vista. I recommend it and at less than 50p a week it's good value.
    Good luck

  • How to edit 1920x1080 & 1280x720 & 720x480 footage in one project - HELP!

I just shot a documentary in which we used two different cameras:
Our A camera was a Panasonic Varicam 2700 shooting in 1280x720 (our desired format), mostly 30fps but at times 60fps for slow-motion sequences. We shot on P2 cards, and my computer says the native codec is ai1p.
Our B camera was a DSLR, specifically the Canon 5D Mark II which can only shoot in 1920x1080, 30fps. I've converted these files from their native H.264 codec to Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) for better workflow in FCP.
In addition, we have SD archival footage that is 720x480 and codec that is DV/DVCPro NTSC.
What is the best method for editing these three formats in FCP? Our desired output format is 1280x720 in the highest quality possible.
Therefore what should my sequence settings be? Do I need to down-convert the B-cam footage before editing or FCP will do this automatically once my settings are set? How do I deal with the archival footage?
I'm very new to editing with multiple native formats. Any help or advice you can offer will be much appreciated!
    Daphne

If you're heading for 720p then it would be more efficient to convert the DSLR to correct format and frame resolution when you're converting it. If you're using the Canon transfer plugin you don't have that option, but it may be easier to convert with a different tool. I'd try to get everything into the same format at the beginning rather than work with multiple formats. It may take more effort and time up front, but I think it's worth it in the long run.

  • How can I get two cameras to aquire at the same time rather than one after the other

I've got (2) PCI-1428 cards, Two Uniq Vision cameras with power supplies, cameralink cables, and IMAQ-D6804 cables. Both cameras are being triggered by the same switch, but they are not grabbing images at the same time. Right now it is triggering one camera as desired, but the other doesn't aquire until after the time-sensitive event. On the next test, the two camera will trade these roles. I am using 2 cards, so they should acquire at the same time. How do I change it so that they grab images at the same time? Thank you for your help.
                                                                  Deater

    Hi Deater,
Thank  you for your post.  Triggering from two cameras at the same time may be a little trickey, but it can be done.  There are multiple ways to tackle this problem.  If you have a RTSI cable, you can RTSI the two PCI boards together internally to lock them in HW.  You should also be able to use the triggering line on each board.
One of the best methods for triggering multiple boards is called GenLocking.  The following Developer Zone page describes GenLocking more fully and has several examples to help you out: http://zone.ni.com/devzone/conceptd.nsf/webmain/a387b5c0ac6f6f4e86256c87005fcddf.
The "HL Grab with two boards.vi" shipping example is also a good example of the code needed to trigger two individual boards in LV.  I found a similar post that may be of some help as well: http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=230&message.id=2691&requireLogin=False

  • Permanent vertical blue line the screen and a red one has just popped up too. What does it mean and how can I get rid of them?

I have had a permanent vertical blue line on the right side of my imac screen for some time now.  It does not affect the use of the computer.  A red one has popped up on the right side of the screen and is not going away either.
Would you know why these are appearing and perhaps how to get rid of them please?
    Thank you in advance

Best guess is that either your GPU or LCD is failing. You should take it to the nearest Apple Store or AASP for proper diagnostic. Once you know what the problem is you can decide wether or not it's worth repairing.
