How to link excel workbooks in Sharepoint?

I have a master Excel spreadsheet and other sub excel spreadsheets (all on Sharepoint) that are linked to each other (copied data from one and pasted link to other) so that the Master spreadsheet auto-updates every time a sub document is modified. This
format works if the documents are hosted on my computer, however, the links become broken if they are hosted on Sharepoint and I get a #REF! message. My goal is to have a master document that is linked to data of other sub spreadsheets and auto-updates when
they are modified without having to open the sub spreadsheets. I would like to be able to open the master document, refresh it, and have the current data pulled from the linked sub spreadsheets. Any suggestions on how I can do this?

I have seen this working for some folks in my company. They moved their spreadsheets into SharePoint, and changed the references to other spreadsheets from file paths to be the urls of the items in SharePoint.

  • Linked Excel files on Sharepoint Online

Has anyone found a work around to having linked excel files on SharePoint Online?
Right now in all my tests, SharePoint Online disables the links in my excel file to cells in another excel file and I cannot find anyway to change the links.
This is a pretty basic function that is used extensively in excel so I'm a little surprised that this is not available in SP Online.

    Hi,
According to your description, the links to other Excel files in the current Excel file not working if in a SharePoint Online environment.
In SharePoint, Excel files is handled by Excel Services. In SharePoint 2013, the “unsupported features continue to behave as they do in Office SharePoint Server 2007
    for Excel Services”:
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/ff595319(v=office.15).aspx
Among the “Unsupported Features in Excel Services in SharePoint 2007”, “External references (workbooks that contain links to other workbooks)” is there:
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms496823(office.12).aspx
As a workaround, I would suggest that you can transfer the data from Excel file to SharePoint list/library, it would be easier to deal with this scenario in SharePoint
with the content management related feature provided.
You can also submit a feedback to the Office Developer Platform with your expectation about the future version of SharePoint:

  • How to link Excel ActiveX document?

I would like to display the contents of an Excel workbook on the

  • "External Data Refresh Failed" in Excel Workbook in SharePoint 2013

      Hi Everyone,
I hope someone can help me sort this out. I wasn't sure if this should be submitted to SQL Server 2012 or SharePoint 2013 but I think I have ruled out an actual SQL issue here.
I have a test SharePoint 2013 Farm installed on one server.  On that server we have SQL Server 2012 Standard (Database Engine Only) installed as one instance for SharePoint 2013.  SharePoint 2013 is installed as Enterprise.
On another server I have SQL Server 2012 Enterprise installed I have both the Database Engine and Analysis Services installed on that server in one Instance.
I have created a new Analysis Services Cube and stored in on that server using VS 2012 Data Tools.   I then use Office 2013 Excel and create a new Pivot Table and bring in that data into that workbook.  I save that workbook to my desktop and
can click on the DATA tab and do a "Refresh All" and the data is refreshed with no problem.
I then Save that Workbook to SharePoint 2013 in my Business Center documents library. I then try to do a Data Refresh and get the following error: External Data Refresh Failed. We were unable to refresh one or more data connections in the workbook. The following
connections failed to refresh: servername ConnectionName.
Let me tell you a little bit about how I have my SharePoint 2013 setup.
In Application Management ==> Secure Store Service - I have a Target Application Id setup with an AD account name and password.
In Application Management ==> Excel Services Application Settings - I an using an Unattended Service Account that is pointing to the Target Application ID that I setup in Secure Store Service.
Now in SQL Server 2012. I have made the AD account name and password a SYSADMIN account (because nothing seemed to work) and mapped that login to my Database that I created my cube from.
I have went into the Properties of my Analysis Server on SQL Server 2012 and out that AD userid in the Security Page as a Server Administrator.
Now let me tell you the real kicker here.
I also have a Sharepoint 2010 farm that we have been testing for about a year.  This is something we wanted to go into production with but now have decided we will deploy our new production site on 2013.
This has the same setup only I am using SQL Server 2008 R2 as my database for SharePoint 2010, and am using SQL Server 2008 R2 on another server and instance for Database Engines and Analysis Server.
I have already created a cube on the SQL 2008 r2 Analysis Server using BIDS.
I created a Excel Pivot Table based on that cube and save it to the SharePoint 2013 site.
I then put the SSS AD account name on the SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services Security as Administrator.
I pull up that Excel Workbook and go into Data and do a Refresh All and it works.
I then bring up my copy of the Excel workbook I created for my SQL Server 2012 Cube (this does not work on SP 2013) and save it to my Business Center in SP 2010.  This will do a DATA Refresh on that workbook.
Another thing that I have done, (we have Office Web Apps Server running on the SP 2013 side), is set SPWOPISuppressSetting -view -extension xlsx so that when I bring up the Excel spreadsheet in 2013 it has a url with the xlviewer instead of the WOPI
    url.
OK.  I have went through all of my setup.   I am must wondering if I missed something in my install for this.  HELP.   There can't be that much difference in the installation between 2010 and 2013.
    Thanks in Advance everyone.

After many hours of research and totally burning down my SQL Server 2012 server because of the many changes I made to it, I finally found the issue that caused this and specifically why SP would not work with SQL Server 2012 Analysis Services.  This
time I reinstalled SQL Server 2012 from scratch again but only put SP1 on at this time.  I can't be completely sure this fixed the issue since I have not put any of the other CU  on the box.  But, after the reinstall, everything seemed to work
perfectly from the Excel Services side.
The issue I then ran into was that I could not get my PerformancePoint Services to work with my Cubes that were created on SQL Server 2012.  I received Error Message " The DataSource Provider for data sources of type 'ADOMD.NET' is not registered" on
my SharePoint 2013 Server Event Viewer.
I finally found this post on the issue:
    http://yossidahan.wordpress.com/2012/08/14/cant-get-ssas-databases-to-appear-in-performance-point-dashboard-designer-check-you-adomd-net-version/
Seems that SP 2013 is built to use SQL Server 2008 R2 Analysis Services, so you need to install the ADOMD.net from SQL Server 2008 in order for it to work.   But make sure you install Version 10 since if you install any other it doesn't seem to
    work.
I feel like I wasted a whole month tracking these issues down, and I haven't been able to test PowerView, PowerPivot or SSRS yet.  I hope there is not any more.

  • Collaborate on Excel workbooks with Sharepoint Foundation

My company recently implemented SharePoint Foundation 2013 and our shared Excel workbooks are no longer allowing multiple users to collaborate at the same time. We have verified that all the settings and permissions are correct and that checking in and
checking out is not required. Is this something that is not available with SharePoint Foundation? We are using Office 2013 installed on the clients, not Office online. Thank you.

Co-authoring of Excel workbooks is only supported when all the editors are using the Excel web application, not the Excel client application.
    From
    Microsoft's overview of co-authoring in SharePoint 2013:
    >"Co-authoring is easy to use from the end user’s point of view. When a user wants to work on a document in Word 2013, PowerPoint 2013, OneNote 2013, Visio 2013 or one of the Office Web Apps, he or she merely opens it from SharePoint 2013 or SharePoint
Online, as usual. If another user already has the document open, both users can edit the document at the same time.
One exception to this is that users can co-author in Excel Web App only if everyone uses the Excel Web App to access the workbook. If anyone uses Excel 2013 or Excel 2010 (the client application)
to access the workbook, co-authoring in Excel Web App will be disabled for that workbook while it is open in the client application."
    >"The Excel 2013 client application does not support co-authoring workbooks in SharePoint 2013 or SharePoint Online. But, the Excel client application uses the Shared Workbook feature to support non-real-time co-authoring workbooks that are stored
locally or on network (UNC) paths."

  • Publishing Excel WorkBook in SharePoint 2013

I have deployed Excel Services, SSRS and BI in SharePoint 2013.   The Site BI has been identified as a Trusted location for Excel Services. When I publish a Excel workbook to a document library of the BI site, I get an error "Upload
failed Your Changes were saved but could not be uploaded because of an error. You may be able to upload this file using the server Web Page".. Before uploading the file, I have selected the whole sheet and in Formula Tab,  selected define name, and
provided a name for the Sheet. I also have Office Web App servers deployed for the Farm.
Appreciate assistance to fix the problem. This is my first try to publish Excel Workbook using Excel services.

  • Linking Excel Workbooks in UCM

Is it possible to have two Excel workbooks in UCM, with a cell/formula in one workbook that references a cell on a sheet in the second workbook?

    Hi there,
I think you can use the web location URL of your target content to do so, you can find this URL in your content information page.
I guess you can try doing the following in workbook1 to link to A1 of Sheet1 in workbook2: ='http://ucm-path/instance/web-location-url/[workbook2.xls]Sheet1'!A1

  • How to link Excel 2010 .XLSX file to SQL server 2008R2 - a method that actually works?

I have been trying unsuccessfully to link my excel file to SQL server like I used to with SQL 2005.
In SQL 2008R2 I have installed the 64-bit data access components from Office 2010 to get the  provider 'Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0' avilable.
    When I try this command:
    SELECT
    FROM
    OPENDATASOURCE(
    'Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0',
    'Data Source="E:\ADUpdates\Employee List1.xlsx"; Extended properties=Excel 12.0')...[Sheet1$]
    I get this error:
    Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "(null)" reported an error. Access denied.
    Msg 7301, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot obtain the required interface ("IID_IDBCreateCommand") from OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "(null)".
The Access Denied error seems to be form the worksheet and not the file itself. Evidence is that if I enter a bogus sheet name it tells me the sheet doesn't exist and after this error the file is locked open and can't be saved again from Excel until the
query windows is closed. The sheet is not protected in Excel so I don't know how access to it can be denied.
Does anyone actually have this working in SQL 2008R2?

Some minor progress on this issue by running SQL Server service under a domain account with Administrator priv on the SQL server.
This query now works in a query window:
    SELECT * FROM OPENDATASOURCE( 'Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0', 'Data Source="E:\ADUpdates\Employee List.xlsx"; Extended properties=Excel 12.0')...[EmployeeData];
However, creating a Linked server object for the same spreadsheet still does not work:
    EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedserver @server = N'TEST', @srvproduct=N'Excel 12.0', @provider=N'Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0', @datasrc=N'E:\ADUpdates\Employee List.xlsx'
The test connection to the linked server failed.
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "TEST".
OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "TEST" returned message "Unrecognized database format 'E:\ADUpdates\Employee List.xlsx'.". (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 7303)

  • How to link Excel tabs so data shows up in one report

I have a huge excel file with 16 tabs (sheets) of data. Each tab has an excel speadsheet filled. I have the data in Crystal. Each tab shows up as a separate table. I've tried to link each in different ways but can only get one table to show up in the report. I want all the data in one report. If that's possible. It would be very large.

    Graham,
    Thanks for answering,
Yes I have the tables and can link them (have tried a couple of different ways) One has all the data fields linked between tables and the other way was to run them in series with just one field linked. Either way the Field Explorer on the right side of the screen shows each table and each table lists all the fields. But the problem is that the report only shows data from one table, not all the tables or all the data. The data that it shows is only from the table that I selected the fields from.
    Hope this makes sense. Thanks

  • How to link Excel Chart with multiple columns dynamically?

    Hi all,
I have one problem. I have an excel chart which has to read data from multiple columns for it's X-axis values (time stamps) and the same number of values for it's Y-axis from multiple columns. See figure attached.
Now, you can do this by manually assigning values by holding control key to tell the chart that data from many columns is continued from the first column. i.e, a long data is distributed along may columns. This is done very easily manually.
Now, how to do it at runtime through LabVIEW 8.0?
Although, I have done it through labview when there where only two columns, A and B streching up to any length. But, now to save space we are dumping into many columns in the same page and want the chart plot that data as we dump it.
It is tough since I don't know how to assign SourceData of the chart through labview.
I have attached chart's SourceData picture.
Hope you all can solve my problem.
    The Y-axis values are: =(good!$B$30:$B$70,good!$D$30:$D$70,good!$F$30:$F$70,good!$H$30:$H$70,good!$B$71:$B$140,good!$D$71:$D$140,good!$F$71:$F$140,good!$H$71:$H$140,good!$B$141:$B$189)
good is the name of the file.
The X- axis values are: =(good!$A$30:$A$70,good!$C$30:$C$70,good!$E$30:$E$70,good!$G$30:$G$70,good!$A$71:$A$140,good!$C$71:$C$140,good!$E$71:$E$140,good!$G$71:$G$140,good!$A$141:$A$189)
See the columns vary from A to F.

  • Cannot publish Excel workbook to Sharepoint 2010 : "You can't open this location using this program. Please try a different location"

I am trying to save an Excel 2010 file to a Sahrepoint 2010 document library but keep getting the error:
"You can't open this location using this program. Please try a different location"
Googling this suggests enabling "Desktop Experience" on the server which I have done. Excel Services Application is Started.
Has anyone come across this and been able to resolve successfully? I am wondering if this is more security related but the security set-up looks fine.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Hi Sally, thanks for the response.  Problem is the issue occurs with all users not just me.
On the server-side do you know if the full Office installation must exist for this to work?
The reason I think it may be security related in some way is that on another server we can access one site collection but not another.  The first site collection shows the various libraries available and the other gives the same error: "You
can't open this location using this program. Please try a different location".
It's proving to be very frustrating!

  • Adding rows to linked Excel tables in InDesign

Hi there, I have figured out how to link Excel documents to tables in InDesign, but is there a way to add additional rows to the tables in InDesign?  If I do that, whenever the Excel link is updated, it deletes the new rows I've added.
We have data that goes in the cells below the linked table and it needs to be in the table so that they'll resize automatically when longer or shorter data is pulled in (vs. just being a totally separate text box/table outside of the linked one).
    Help!

Hi, yes, I did add blank rows but the difficulty is that for each instance (20+) the cells below vary, and are also "tagged" with variable data tags (so it brings in outside data via an xml feed) so that's only done in InDesign and not in excel... Therein lies my dilemma.  Ideally if I could be "free" about what text, cells, etc. I can put in below the linked cells, that'd be lovely.

I've heard it is possible to use an OData Feed Link to get data from an Excel Workbook that is stored on SharePoint 2013 online. Does anyone know the format for the link? I've been searching high and low and cannot get any specific format that works. Thanks!

I received this from someone on our team:
In PQ, click From File -> From Excel.
In the file dialog that appears, paste in your site url (e.g. https://mycompany.sharepoint.com/teams/myteam).
The file dialog will display the files stored in your sharepoint site. Navigate until you reach the desired excel file.
    Select it and click done.
