How to make arch safe enough to remote desktop?

I have a dsl connection at home, and I need to remote from work to my home usually.
Sometimes I need to reboot my computer at home from a remote connection because I need to change to another OS.
The problem with arch, is that if adsl is not able to connect at startup for some reason, it wont try it later, and I will lost the machine.
Other distributions, like debian, keeps the daemon running until it connects, or try it later; I can do the same with windows and it dsl connection properties; but so far, I have not been able to do it with arch.
Thanks in advance

Well, i'd say pppd knows when it has been disconnected, and quits itself.
So, ensure you have the flag -detach in your pppd configuration file enabled, and configure your inittab similar to this
pd:23:respawn:/usr/sbin/pppd
This would ensure to reconnect when the pppd daemon quits. This might not be the proper arch way to go, but it should work
That's the commandline version, if you are running KDE, kppp has a reconnect method for pppd.
The other way would be to write a small shell or perl script to check if the daemon is running or if you still have a connection up.
Hope it helps

  • How to make a safe copy of all mails or to export these?

    Hello, I'n newbie on Mac OS X. I've been wondering how to make a safe copy of all mails in my inbox or to export all of them, like on Outlook with the function "Export". I don't find such function under MAIL. Can you please help me? Thanks
    Best regards.

    Hi
    Welcome to Mac Computing.
    The folder holding your e-mail plus mailboxes etc. is located (via the Finder) in your User Account>Library>Mail folder. You can copy this folder to external media, such as another hard drive, or CD/DVD.
    If you want to save specific e-mails, follow these directions from Mail's Help section (Help Menu):
    Exporting email messages:
    You can save one or more messages as a separate file to archive messages or to import the contents into another application. You can open the saved message in TextEdit.
    Open the message you want to export.
    Choose File > Save As, and enter a name for the file.
    Choose a location for the file from the Where pop-up menu.
    Choose a format from the pop-up menu.
    If you choose Rich Text Format, the text formatting of the message will be visible.
    If you choose Plain Text, the colors, fonts, and other formatting will be lost.
    If you choose Raw Message Source, the full delivery headers will be visible. If the message has attachments, you'll only see the encoded version of the attached files.

  • How to make arch bootable after shifting the hard drive?

    I have two hard drives, each having an OS installed (Arch on sda, Win on sdb). I change the boot order in BIOS to switch between the OS's, and it works fine. Grub is installed in mbr.
    But now I wanna change the connection of these two drives (Arch=>sdb, Win=>sda). After doing that, however, windows is still bootable, while Arch not any more.
    I can sucessfully see Grub, but errors occur after that. I'm not sure what I should do to make Arch bootable. Can anyone give me some ideas?

    If you can see Grub, then the system is reading it OK, but you'll need to boot the system and fix your /boot/grub/menu.lst and /etc/fstab files to refer to hd(1) and sdb respectively.
    To boot the system, you have 2 options:
    1) When Grub shows up, press 'e' to edit the "ArchLinux" entry. Then press 'e' again to edit the 'root' line and then change hd(0,0) to hd(1,0)  (the second number might be different depending how your partition table is setup).  Then you can press 'b' to boot.
    2) Use an install CD to boot, then mount your Arch partition and edit the files from there

    Wait a minute. You should *never* allow remote (external) login for root. If you really must then
    setup dsa ssh keys and disallow access via password & disable use of PAM in /etc/sshd_config
    and limit root access to local IPs (ie: IP ranges owned by your ISP for example).
    Same is true for admin.
    _Do NOT send or receive email as root !!!_
    As for properly securing ssh, better to login as a non-admin account and then su to your admin account.
    Don't use "admin" for your admin account-name.
    And yes of course use strong passwords, but you want to get away from allowing ssh access via password anyway.
    It's not as perfect as I'd like (couldn't edit it after the fact), but see my post about securing ssh

  • How to make a normal Function Module remote able function module

    Hi guys,
    i am a beginner in abap programming. I have made a programm in Se80 which shows all the nodes of the active hierarchies (5 stk.)
    in a ALV grid. Therefore i am getting the active hierarchies from table "rshiedir" and use the normal function module "RSSH_HIERARCHY_READ" to display the nodes of the hierarchie. The problem is the hierarchies do have a different techical name in the systems (development-acceptance-productive) but the descriptive nbame is the same in all systems. Because of the difference of the technical names I can use this programm in just one system. But the hierarchy content should be comparable and be displayed in all three systems. Therefore i would like to create a remoteable function module which covers the normal one. Can i do this and how can i create a remoteable function module and use it?
    If not do you know any remotable functgion module which gives back all the nodes from an active hierarchy in table "RShiedir".
    Thanks and kind regards,
    Murat

    Hello,
    Simple, create a wrapper RFC (similar to 'RSSH_HIERARCHY_READ' ) & call the normal FM 'RSSH_HIERARCHY_READ' inside the wrapper.
    Something like this:
    FUNCTION z_rssh_hierarchy_read.
    *"*"Global Interface:
    *"  IMPORTING
    *"     VALUE(I_RSHIEDIRKEY) TYPE  RSHI_S_RSHIEDIRKEY OPTIONAL
    *"     VALUE(I_RSHIEDIRLOG) TYPE  RSHI_S_RSHIEDIRLOG OPTIONAL
    *"     VALUE(I_DATE) TYPE  RSHI_DATE DEFAULT SY-DATUM
    *"  EXPORTING
    *"     REFERENCE(E_RSHIEDIR) TYPE  RSHI_S_HIEDIR
    *"     REFERENCE(E_T_RSNODES) TYPE  RSHI_T_HIENODE
    *"     REFERENCE(E_TH_RSINTERVAL) TYPE  RSHI_TH_INTERVAL
    *"     REFERENCE(E_DUPLICATE_LEAFS) TYPE  RS_BOOL
    *"     REFERENCE(E_T_RSNODES_LNK) TYPE  RSHI_T_HIENODE
    *"  EXCEPTIONS
    *"      INVALID_HIERARCHY
    *"      NAME_ERROR
    *"      IOBJ_NOT_FOUND
    " Don't forget to add TYPE-POOLS rshi to the FuGr. TOP include
      CALL FUNCTION 'RSSH_HIERARCHY_READ'
        EXPORTING
          i_rshiedirkey     = i_rshiedirkey
          i_rshiedirlog     = i_rshiedirlog
          i_date            = i_date
        IMPORTING
          e_rshiedir        = e_rshiedir
          e_t_rsnodes       = e_t_rsnodes
          e_th_rsinterval   = e_th_rsinterval
          e_duplicate_leafs = e_duplicate_leafs
          e_t_rsnodes_lnk   = e_t_rsnodes_lnk
        EXCEPTIONS
          invalid_hierarchy = 1
          name_error        = 2
          iobj_not_found    = 3
          OTHERS            = 4.
      IF sy-subrc <> 0.
    * MESSAGE ID SY-MSGID TYPE SY-MSGTY NUMBER SY-MSGNO
    *         WITH SY-MSGV1 SY-MSGV2 SY-MSGV3 SY-MSGV4.
      ENDIF.
    Here Z_RSSH_HIERARCHY_READ is the wrapper RFC. Hope you get the point.

  • How to make arched tracks?

    Hi,
    I'm building Led boards for power leds mounted on a circular board.
    To go from one led's connection (series connection) to another one, I'd like to use circular (arched)  tracks...
    using the normal 0° / 45° / 90° tracks looks quite messy, and makes me loose valuable cooling space..
    Does anyone know a good ad simple trick to do so?
    Best regards

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Johan,
    I don't know of a way to make perfect spirals in Ultiboard, but you can use the arc tool. The arc tool continues drawing from the end point of the last arc if you don't leave arc drawing mode. This makes it easy to make spirals by attaching cirular arcs of increasing diameter. I suggest the following:
    Figure out the width and pitch of the spiral you are drawing
    Set the grid to cartesian with grid size of the pitch of your spiral
    Activate the copper layer to place the spiral on
    Select the arc tool
    Change the copper width to the width of your spiral
    Start placing copper, each end point of each arc should be directly opposite to the previous point
     I am afraid I may not be very clear. Here's an attachment that shows what I mean. It should work in Ultiboard 10.1.1.
    Hope that helps.

  • How to make use of 3EC_CS_1R for remote cube.

    hi all,
    I have activated the 3EC_CS_1A for consolidation reports but would like to use 3EC_CS_1R DataSource for remote cube, we have not installed SEM-BCS on the BI system, when trying to use the 3EC_CS_1R on the BI system, it complaints the DataSource can only be used by SEM-BCS. what is the best way to utilise this DataSource?
    do I need to install SEM-BCS in order to use this DataSource? Can I just install BCS component only?
    I am slightly confused as where SEM-BCS should be installed, on BI or ECC system?
    cheers.

    Solution 1:
    - Install SSH server on B.
    - SSH server is running on B.
    - Create java SSH client which logs into B then uses "net share" command to create it.
    Solution 2:
    - Create java server that runs "net share" command when it receives request.
    - Install that server on B.
    - Create java client that calls server.

  • How to make thread safe?

    Hi guys,
    I got a backing bean like
    public class UserBean{
    private String firstname;
         public String getFirstname() {
              return firstname;
         public void setFirstname(String firstname) {
              this.firstname = firstname;
    the firstname variable is also use in the jsp page like
    <h:outputText value="#{userBean.firstname}"/>
    If the "setFirstname" method is executed by two threads, then it's likely that the value of the firstnameinstance variable will be replaced by the second thread while the first thread is still using it. So does JSF handle this thread safe condition? Please advice, Thanks !
    regards,
    kmthien

    If the bean is scoped in the request, according to the servlet spec, only one thread should ever access it. If the bean in scoped in the session/application, then it's up to you to manage synchronization within your bean as with every other web framework.

  • How to make Nano NOT appear on Mac desktop as connected drive when I plug in to recharge it? Just want charging, not syncing, and don't want to unmount drive each time.

    I have a 6th generation iPod Nano.
    I almost exclusively use it as an FM radio and as a pedometer -- so far I have not loaded any songs onto it for listening, nor do I intend to in the future.
    Here's my problem:
    When my Nano runs out of juice, I have to use the charging cord to plug it into to my iMac's USB port to recharge the Nano. However, whenever I do so, two different (unwanted) actions happened:
    First, the act of plugging in the iPod auto-launched iTunes, for syncing. I solved this problem by finding the preference check box for launching iTunes when connecting an iPid, and UNchecking the box. That worked, problem solved.
    However, the second automatic action is that the iPod appears as a connected drive on the iMac desktop, as any external device with a drive would appear when connected to any Mac. But I have no need for this to be happening -- I don't intend to upload anything to the iPod, nor to sync it, or whatever -- the only reason I ever connect the iPod to the iMac is to RECHARGE the iPod, not to tinker with the contents of what's on it.
    The problem is, every time I then want to disconnect the charging cord, I have to manually "unmount" the iPod drive by dragging its desktop icon to the Trash, when then allows the "it is now safe to disconnect your external drive" state to obtain, allowing me to then unplug it without getting a warning message telling me I shouldn't have just disconnected a connected drive without first unmounting it.
    This wouldn't be such a bother, except that the 6th generation iPod Nano has a new "feature" which makes it impossible to see how far along the charging is progressing while it is still in the act of charging. Thus, the only way to know if it is has become  fully charged is to unplug it, and look at the battery monitor. While is it still connected and charging, all that displays on the iPod is the "charging now" battery icon, which does not reveal just how the charging is progressing, or if it is fully charged yet. (My iPhone, by way of contrast, displays during charging a battery icon which reveals how far charged it is by that point.)
    As a result of this Nano "feature," I often find myself having to connect and disconnect the Nano two or three or more times each time I'm charging it, so I can simply check how far along the charging has gotten, since I want to disconnect it as soon as it has finished charging and get back to using it.
    But so far, I have not been able to find any kind of setting or preference which allow me to identify this device as one which I DON'T want to "mount" each time it is plugged in.
    All I want to do is just plug in the iPod, and be able to unplug it, without having to to ANY shenanigans on the computer itself. Just plug in = recharging, unplug = not charging any more. Simple.
    Question: is there any way to achieve this? Or is it simply not possible, and must I manually unmount the iPod's drive (more than once, usually) each time I plug it in for recharging?

    I should also point out that when I connect my iPhone, it DOESN'T appear as a connected drive on the desktop. Not sure how this can be so, since the iPhone also has a drive and also functions as an iPod if I want it to. I must have changed some setting to achieve this non-appearance, but don't remember what I must have done.
    What's the secret?

    Hy guys!
    There are any application to make a selective deletions of files and folders?
    Each end of day i need to delete all files present in my Desktop, except the folders setted to be kept.

    You need to use some sort of criterion. Many exist, including:
    tell application "Finder"
    delete (every file of desktop whose name is not in {"file 1 to keep.txt", "file 2 to keep.jpg"})
    end tell
    No folders will be deleted by the script as written.

    @ rasi -
    2 possibilities. Set up your term to set the window title and match by that.
    Or try "Roxterm/weechat-curses" - this works at least in i3 and other tilers
    - neither of these work sadly. So ive tried Rent0ns suggestion, which entailed installing an getting to grips with urxvt.
    @ rent0n - I installed urxvt and followed your directions. I used Obapps to code rc.xml, i now have weechat appearing on the desktop of my choice. The code Obapps gave was -
    <application name="weee"><desktop>1</desktop><decor>yes</decor><focus>yes</focus><shade>no</shade><fullscreen>no</fullscreen><maximized>no</maximized><layer>normal</layer><skip_taskbar>no</skip_taskbar></application>
    The focus set to yes just opens weechat on desktop 1, regardless of the desktop im on. And no, no switching of desktop, i just stay on the desktop i'm on. Now all ive got to do is get to grips with configuring urxvt, which doesnt seem so simple to configure as roxterm. I have to say, and no offense meant to the developers of urxvt, but its an ugly blighter in its default state. But thats another topic i guess
    Thanks to all concerned for their time and advice

  • How to disable Airport Status using Apple Remote Desktop?

    I am in a school and students have began using the "Create Network" item in the Airport Status menu to send inappropriate messages to each other. I can uncheck the "Show Airport Status in menubar" which will eliminate this but I'd rather not have to go around to 200 computers. Is there a Unix command that I can send in ARD that will disable this menu from even showing up? Thanks.

    I see that you are also using AD and OD together. You can use OD to push out a computer MCX preference, that will disable the student's ability to do just what you want.
    Select the computer list, click preferences at the top, choose Network, Sharing & Interfaces, set it to Always and check Disable Internet Sharing.
    It works well.
    I know this is not what you asked for, but hopefully it solves your problem.
