How to make boot camp install my windows 7 ISO without a Cd? Broken optical drive...

So yeah, my internal optical drive is dead and i am not paying for a repair nor an external drive.
Boot camp keeps prompting me to install a windows 7, but tough luck for me doing that. I found a tutorial online that suggests modifying the info.plist file of Boot Camp Assisant like so:
once all of the above is complete you can edit the 'info.plist' file in TextEdit (or another editor, like Xcode if you prefer). what you want to do is add a string to let 'Boot Camp Assistant' recognize your machine like it would a Macbook Air. use the 'System Profiler' Hardware Overview to identify your "Model Identifier" (i.e. mine is: MacBookPro5,2). using this, you can write your model into the file using a line like:
<string>MBP52</string>
this string should be placed in the array section found at the very end of 'info.plist'. it is recommended to add it to the end or beginning of the array ..for me it needed to be at the beginning.
you will know this is successful by opening 'Boot Camp Assistant' and finding all three tasks are now available.. the first choice being "Create a Windows 7 install disk".
I tried doing just that, but my macbook's System profiler ID'ed it as MacBook 5,1 so my string looked like: <string>MB51</string>
Go figure, i'm not seeing the new options to install windows ISO to a external usb drive...

The thread you linked me to, Eric, shows the guy 'Niganit' with the eXACT SAME PROBLEM as me! He seems to have found out the problem but I dont see his resolve.

New Macbook Pro retina boot camp install issue - Windows 7

Trying to complete a boot camp install but can't get past creating a partition. I am able to download the windows drivers through boot camp, it burns them to a DVD, verifies the DVD (couldn't use CD-R as it kept saying burn failure after verifying files) and then takes me to the make a partition page. When i click install the partition, it pops up saying "can't find the installer disc" and wants me to put one in the super drive. What gives? I have that disc in the drive, also tried the Windows 7 disc and got the same error. So basically I can't create a partition to install windows 7 that I have.
Any thoughts?

The disk was from my other PC system, however it is an OEM upgrade disc. Maybe that is the problem but if that is the case why did it work when I installed it through VMware and it worked fine? The disc can be used as a self full install of windows 7. I have also it on another PC with no issues. Trying to convert to Mac finally but this is causing a hiccup.
The next question then is do I really need to go the boot camp way? I only need it to run quickbooks (need windows version for reasons) and a couple of other programs but thought it may run better as a boot camp install rather than VM plus I couldn't figure out how to reduce the size of the partition that VM installs, it takes too much space from me for no reason (60Gb).

Failed Boot Camp Install during Windows portion - how eject Windows CD?

New iMac owner (intel, 24"). I tried to set up boot camp. I set the partion to 32mb. Then loaded a new Windows XP Home (with SP2). The Windows install crashed (blue screen of death) and my only option was to power off iMac. Now every time I turn it on, it tries to load Windows. How do I get Windows CD out of the superdrive?

I am so glad I found your post. I tried to install Windows XP with BootCamp and was not successful. Anyway, I'm on a MacBook Pro with no no left mouse button. How do I eject the disk?
Also, can I shut down the MacBook with the error message "Press Ctrl-Alt-Del" to restart showing? I tried plugging in a keyboard but it did not work.
I see that you are in Germany and it is about 2:00AM there, so unless anyone else sees this message, I'm going to have to power down my laptop and see what happens.

Concerned about Boot Camp Install of Windows

I have a Mac Pro with 3 hard drives. Currently there is nothing on Bay 1, but I want to install Windows 7 via Boot Camp. Currently my boot up disk is in Bay 2 with the Mac Os Lion on it. What would be the best way to prep and do the install?

Pam the other poster, the hatter, is suggesting you install Windows Natively on your Mac, IE Not using the Boot Camp Assistant or boot Camp at all.
That is fine if you know how to do that correctly. Personally I would not do that. Not sure how that works with the Mac Pro series of computer but on most you need a separate program, Not sure of the name of the program but it is a program that allows access to the EFI of Macs so Windows can be installed.
Lets get back to using Boot Camp and the Assistant for boot camp.
Questions:
1) Do you have enough space on your current hard drives to partition one of them with enough space to install Windows and all the program you will need to install and all data you will need on the Windows side?
2) Or would you like to install a new HDD in your open bay just for Windows?

Why does Boot Camp not recognize Windows ISO image(s) ?

My intention is to install Windows 7 on my Mac
(I've several Windows OS .iso images)
in the "BOOTCAMP" called partition, created by Boot Camp 3.0 application, on my internal drive.
This is a 32 GB partition, being FAT32 formatted,
but any version of Windows 7 (when installing)
will surely want to be on an NTFS volume and reformat it.
I've already burned 3 ISOs, with Toast Titanium 10.0.7 (speed : 2x, less not possible), on 3 DVDs :
— 1 DVD -RW with W7 Enterprise x64 (with folders and strict ISO 9660 names) ;
— 1 DVD -RW with W7 Enterprise x86 (32-bit) with one unique ISO, alone ;
— 1 DVD -R with W7 Ultimate x86 (32-bit) with one unique ISO, alone.
*Boot Camp doesn't recognize these discs as Windows installation DVDs*,
and so does nothing but wait.
I'm sure that something is missing on the disks to be recognized
as bootable Windows installation discs,
but I absolutely don't know what (setup.exe, for example, or another .exe file ?).
Do I have to do something with the burning options
(strict ISO 9660 naming, Mac names authorized, Hybrid Mac and PC,
Joliet names or not, folders or not, etc.)
Do I have to do something with the ISO image (any ISO I have), and how, and what ?
I've also activators and many other things (.exe files),
but I think they have to be used AFTER installation.

I'll go there immediately. It's obvious for me that only one .iso file, alone on a DVD, can't be sufficient, comparing with +(but I don't know what)+ is on a Microsoft Windows Install DVD.

PS : I didn't have any time to reply to anyone, when I asked "How can I move something (copying it) without leaving original in it's place ?". Someone had the answer : "Drag and hold down cmd while releasing mouse". OK, it works, but you have to have good nerves, because folders open when doing that (I changed delay in Finder Preferences to the slowest), and there's also another inconvenient : I don't trust in copy (I want a one by one byte result), so I have to write what Get Info says BEFORE, and compare it after that with what Get Info says. In this case, I prefer to return to my old habits.
PPS : I observed, and I will tell it somewhere when possible, that *Get Info gives false informations*.
For example, I copied a folder with 58 items inside. Get Info didn't give me the same number of bytes for the copy as for the original. So, I did Get Info for *EACH of the 58 items*, wrote the results (in bytes) on a paper, and after adding *all the bytes of the copy*, found THE SAME NUMBER *as the total size of the original.* That's how I waste my time !

Hi,
Usually the correct way to remove your Windows partition is to use the BootCamp Assistant again which should give you the option to remove the made Windows partition and revert back to one OSX volume.
After that's done a reboot of your Mac might be advisable. After the reboot use the BootCamp Assistant again to make the Windows partition and then install the (hopefully correct) version of Windows.
Only if that's not working (whatever the reason) :
1) boot your Mac from your OSX install DVD
2) choose your language and then 'ignore' (cancel) the installation
3) from the Top Menu (Utilities) start Disk Utility (DU)
4) in DU click on your harddisk (not any partition) in the left pane (the first item listed)
5) in the right pane use the 'Partition'-Tab
6) click to highlight on the ex-Windows partition you want to delete
7) click on the small '-' Button at the bottom
That should delete your former Windows partition
After that's done successfully
8) Drag the partition separator line until it encompasses the entire drive and then select apply.
9) Quit Disk Utility
10) reboot your Mac from your harddisk.
Since you are 'fumbling' with your OSX partition you should consider having/making a backup of it before trying the a.m. procedure. Just in case.

How to install windows 8 using bootcamp with no optical drive

Hi,
I have a mac book pro 17" late 2011 with Mountain Lion installed.
I have previously installed a windows 7 using bootcamp without an optical drive by creating an install disk as part of boot camp option.
I still don't have an optical drive.
The other day I removed my Windows 7 since I want to try Windows 8 but when I try using boot camp to install windows 8 it is asking for an optical drive and the option to create an install disk is not available anymore.
Any idea on this issue?

It should be straight forward and no different, except you are burning an ISO and that always needs to be done at slowest burn speed for any version of Windows.Otherwise it won't work (even if it manages to install it will fail on restart or some other point).

i have an existing windows 7 boot camp install that resides on a drive in my 2006 mac pro with my LION OS.
i now have a 2012 mac pro.
should i install windows 7 with boot camp on a SEPARATE drive or can i put it on a partition on the same drive as yosemite?

so i /like/ the idea of having an internal CLONE of my OS in bay 1 on the drive in bay 2.
in the past i have set this to happen nightly and i use WinClone (thanks hatter) to create a BACKUP of the Boot Camp install of Windows 7 and i drop this backup on the DESKTOP. this way i have a BACKUP of Windows on my boot OS and i also have one on the CLONE.
just to confirm - no reason as far as you are concerned to change this?

Failed boot camp install - how to remove windows partition?

After a failed boot camp install, boot camp no longer sees (or can remove) a windows partition - Disk Utility can't seem to remove it and if I use:
$ diskutil list
It shows up as partition 5 "Microsoft Reserved"
I also have a portion of free space that I can't seem to incorporate back into the main OSX partition - how do I remove the windows partition and make the drive a single OSX drive again?
Any help would be much appreciated

Just incase others have this issue, this wasn't caused by using Disk Utility (Disk Utility couldn't remove the partition anyway) it was caused by repeatedly trying to format the Boot Camp partition using the Windows installer when Windows refused to install.
The solution is an Apple tech note (I can no longer find it sorry) that sates that no other hard drives besides the internal HD and the Windows USB flash drive can be connected while installing windows.

You can do it with third-party programs, but I don't recommend it because you can damage the hard drive. The best way to do it is to delete your Windows volume and create it again with the size you need

I'm using a 2014 iMac and a Win 8.1 64bit install disc with bootcamp. I created the ISO according to the instructions but when I selected it in bootcamp I got the following error "Boot Camp only supports Windows 7 or later..."

Bootcamp rejects the ISO file made from a windows 8.1 disc with the error message "Boot Camp only supports Windows 7 or later installation on this platform. Please use an ISO file for Windows 7 or later installation."
How do I get past this?

No the ISO is just 64bit. I bought a shrink wrapped copy of 8.1 full version. It has two discs, one for 32bit and one for 64bit. I used the 64bit disc.
I inserted it in an older iMac that has a dvd drive, and shared that across to my new iMac. I used disc utility to create a disc image following instructions I found here...

This created an ISO file. I then went into bootcamp but when I tried to use the ISO file to create a boot USB it failed with the error above.

I've downloaded the Window support option software and the WindowSetupBox.exe and copied it to the USB drive. I tried to create an iso image from my Windows XP machine but recieved messages that Windows 8.1 could not run on XP. I've ordered the Windows 8.1 backup media.
Any way to proceed?

then start over. install on to your usb along with the support software.
