How to make PDF render to handle HTML specific?

I am having a database which has content like footer, footnotes and disclaimer. content can have HTML entities such as ampersand dagger semicolon "&dagger;" and ANSI code so that browser is able to interpert and format accordingly. We are pulling the same content for display in web page as well as in PDF. But our PDF render process fails to display since HTML entities and ANSI code are browser-specific and not PDF-specific. How to convert these HTML entities and ANSI code so that to display the same symbol in PDF?
Any help will be appreciated.

I note from your system details that you have the plugin for adobe pdf s so I would have expected the files should open in firefox '''without''' you needing to explicitly download them.
Once the files are open in firefox, you will also get the option to save them permanently to a location on your computer. If you wish I suppose you could set the file type pdf to be associated with and be opened by firefox instead of with the Adobe Acrobat Reader, but that would just seem to be an additional complexity.

When I look closely on my screenshot I wonder if it's even the same font though (the "3" looks very different).
Perhaps that's where the problem lies.
If I force firefox to use Arial, it looks good. If I set it to Helvetica which seems to be the font used, it looks like in the screenshot - pixelated.

Seems it doesn't use truetype (helvetica.ttf?) as default font for helvetica - shouldn't it?

I am trying to make JSF render some binary data. I have my own components, set of renderers and render kit all implemented.
Still, I get several problems, one of them seems to bo implementation of UIComponentTag (in Sun's reference implementation, but, on the first glance,MyFaces has the same problem).
If you are rendering response, you should use either ResponseWriter or ResponseStream, not both of them, correct ? But UIComponentTag directly creates ResponseWriter in doStartTag() code - and what are my chances to use ResponseStream somewhere ? I was thinking about UIComponent subclassing ( re-implementing doStartTag() and doEndTag() ), but it does not seems to be easy if you are NOT calling parent's methods .
Of course, I can access servlet's responseStream through facesContext and do anything I would like, but it seems to be more than a hack
So - does anybody has a positive experience of making JSF render binary data, or this is more a theoretical possibility ?

How to create PDF from text file with specific layout?

I wanted to create the pdf from text file in specific layout - Landscape orientation and JIS B3 Page size while at Adobe Acrobat Pro.
In past, I could do a right click on a text file (desktop area) and select print to print out the document into .pdf BUT only if I set the Adobe PDF to Landscape and JIS B3 Page size BEFORE. And I could only do 15 text documents at once.
I wanted to see if I could do the create the pdf from text file with specific layout in Adobe Acrobat without having to go to Control Panel to preset the Adobe PDF to specific layout at every time. I would have to set Adobe PDF back to normal layout after I'm done with these pdf print outs. I do lots of pdfs in normal layout. Sometimes I would forget to do that.
So, How do I do that?

No such luck. It would output the contents in letter size even in JIS B3 Page layout at MS word.

If you are working in RGB you can embed a colour profile. Embed ICC Profiles is one of the Acrobat save options. It will increase files size dramatically.
When you save your pdf you can choose the compression method for placed images. Default is ZIP which is really no compression at all for pixel images. Instead you should opt for JPG compression (of varying degree according to how sensitive the images are to compression).
You should also examine the other Acrobat save options. To minimize file size you should not have any of the options checked (Preserve Illustrator Editing Capability, Embed page Thumbnails etc. etc.).
40 gigabytes for a file like the one you show is ridiculous. Did you maybe embed the placed images? If so, don’t. Keep them linked unless you really need to embed them.

You're right. Fortunately there is an OCR in my scanning software, so I tested one PDF file I had already scanned, and yes it was searchable. Apparently not all PDF files I see are searchable because whoever scanned those files did not have OCR in their scanning software. I am now glad I spent a fortune on my Epson scanner.
