How to migrate SQL Cluster into Virtual SQL server or Virtual SQL Cluster

Hello All,
Currently we will be attempting to migrate a SQL cluster of (2 systems) into are virtual enviroment.  We have been tracking the system requirements with Vmware Consolidation Tool and IO Meter to make sure our hosts have enough resources to accomidate this.  All the metrics coming back looks like it will run just fine virtulized as the cluster was just for failover purposes anyhow and not for performance purproses.  With that said a few questions have come up.
1.)  What is the best way to virtulize this or to convert it (P2V)
     -  Should we just create a new Virtual Machine and install the same version of SQL and do a manual migration to the new SQL server and leave it as 1 SQL server with HA
     -  Or is there a way to P2V this kind of a setup ? if so what are the steps involved?
2.)  If a P2V is possible I was under the impression that you will have to use a RAW mapping for the hard disks otherwise the cluster will not work ?  Can anyone speak to this? as I'm pretty sure I have clustered windows server 2008 without RAW mapping before but not with SQL

Another quick question.  The Vmware SQL Clustering KB article says:
vSphere MSCS Setup Limitations
Before you set up MSCS, review the list of functionality that is not supported for this release, and any
requirements and recommendations that apply to your configuration.
The following environments and functionality are not supported for MSCS setups with this release of vSphere:
n Clustering on iSCSI, FCoE, and NFS disks.
n Mixed environments, such as configurations where one cluster node is running a different version of ESX/
ESXi than another cluster node.
n Use of MSCS in conjunction with VMware Fault Tolerance.
n Migration with VMotion of clustered virtual machines.
n N-Port ID Virtualization (NPIV)
n With native multipathing (NMP), clustering is not supported when the path policy is set to round robin.
n You must use hardware version 7 with ESX/ESXi 4.0.
Can you not do clustering if your shared storage is iSCSI ? or can you not do RAW mapping with it to create the cluster ?

    Hi Alok,
    Oracle have a tool called the Oracle Migration Workbench (OMWB). It is a free tool which can help you migrate you database from SQL Server 7 to Oracle 9i. You can find out more about it here.

    You basically need to download the OMWB Core part and then 1 of the plugins (You need to download the SQL Server 7 plugin).
    Once these are installed you can connect to your SQL Server 7 database, capture the schema objects within, map these to their Oracle equivalents and then Generate then into you Oracle database. Its GUI wizard driven tool so its easy enough to use.
    Note that this tool helps people move there databases to Oracle and is not a silver bullet. The more complex your database more time you need to rectify problems and test.

    We have consolidation . So we cannot use BPC 10.1 unified. We will have to go for 10.1 classic.

    2.     Set SPRO paramter ENABLE_ACCLERATOR = Y and ACCELERATOR_ON = Y
    My feeling is those are still relevant.

    There are no automated translation tools from BSP to WDA.  Although similar in structure (both MVC and Unified Renderer based), the technology implementation is very different. BSP uses MVC - and has Model and Controller objects. However these ABAP classes are in no way compatible with what Web Dynpro generates.  WDA also has the concept of Context which doesn't exist at all in base BSP (although CRMUI does have a context, this is just a wrapper around the BSP model class and isn't compatible with the WDA context either).
    The view becomes even more problematic.  Although the HTMLB, XHTMLB, and PHTMLB tag libraries are similar to the standard UI elements in Web Dynpro, the WDA versions are much more advanced. You probably could map most of the properties and tags to WDA, but not everything.  However the fact that in BSP you can inject any custom HTML and JavaScript becomes an issue because there is no way to do the same in WDA.
    Overall, you should just start from scratch and redesign the application as WDA.

    I don't think there's good work around over that. Mysql .sql file syntax is a little different from Oracle. Especially the DDLs.
    Unless you are willing to blindly run the .sql file and fix the one failed manually.

    How do I capture the SQL Server 200 user defined function that returns table? Is this supported in the current version of Oracle Migration Workbench? I am using the latest version - Release 9.2.0.1.0 with SQL SERVER 2000 plug-in.
    I was able to capture the SQL Server 2000 user defined function that returns string and smalldatetime but not the functions return table during the migrate data source stage.

    This is not currently supported. The next release of the Oracle Migration Workbench (due very soon), will do a better job of catching this mad reporting an error. We are looking into a suitable mapping and have created bug # 2355073 - TABLE DEFINITIONS NOT ACCEPTED FOR TABLE FUNCTIONS to track this issue.
    Once possible solution we are looking into is using the object type to emulate. Here is an example from the bug:

    Are there specific folder I just copy/past or I just copy everything and override the original ?

    My first question would be why? Any customizations, hopefully, should be in .wsp format.
    Assuming you have manually copied files into the hive folder and are looking to get them to the new server, copying the whole hive across is a really bad idea. What I have done in this situation (more than once) is to use a differencing app such as Notepad++
    (with plugins) or WinMerge (my personal fave).
    1) Copy the hive from the source server to a temp folder on the destination server
    2) Use one of the apps above to compare the two directory structures
    3) Copy across just the missing files from the source folder to the destination hive
    By doing it this way you ensure you don't damage your fresh clean hive on the new server, and you should be able to get across the manual customizations you need.

    I am using oracle vm server 2.2.2 and i am trying to create the disaster recovery strategy for my environment
    Initially i have successfully paused the vm VM1 using the "xm save VM1 suspended_file " command and save the memory to a file named suspended_file
    then i backed up the directory under OVS/runnning_pool on the magnetic tape includind the suspended file
    when i tried to restore the vm1 to a new server i was not able to restore the vm using the xm restore command.I have import the virtual machine from vm manager and therefore the paths in configuration file contains the correct paths pointing to the images in the new server pool.
    however the following error appears when run the xm restore suspended_file
    Error :disk image does not exit /old_path_to_the_image
    For unknown reason the suspended file contains the old path to the disk image.Is there any way to alter the suspended file in order to point to the new directory
    If i start the vm ignoring the suspend file could cause any problems ?

    If all of the database files, including the binaries, are on a SAN you might be able to...
    1. Cold backup of everything - database files and binaries.
    2. Dismount the SAN volumes from the old server.
    3. Mount the SAN volumes to the new server - using the same mount points.
    4. Start up the database on the new server.
    If the OS version/release are the same between new and old, that should be about all you need to do.
    If the OS is same but upgraded to new version/release you will want to relink the Oracle executables before starting up.

Maybe you are looking for
