How to move a virtual disk's physical allocation within a Storage Pool

I have a pool of 3x500GB where one the physical drives is having intermittent issues. Currently, there is only one parity Virtual Disk of 300GB Fixed across 3 columns. I want to replace the bad drive with a good one. The old way (pre-2012) was replace the
disk, repair the RAID 5, resync and done. These basic steps are not working.
So far I have added a 4th 500GB drive to the pool. After searching and failing to find a way to move the data non-destructively, I decided to just pull the data cable on the disk I wanted to replace. After refresh/rescan, the disconnected drive shows "lost
communication" and the virtual disk (after trying to repair) shows "unknown" (but the volume on that disk is accessible in Explorer).  When I try to remove the physical disk in Server Manager, I get "The selected physical disk cannot
be removed". Reading the error message, I see that the replacement disk cannot contain any part of a virtual disk. The replacement disk that I just added appears to have some space allocated (possibly because I have tried this same procedure a couple
of times already?). When I look at the parity disk properties/health, it shows all four physical disks under "physical disks in use".
I have deleted and recreated a lot of storage pools lately while trying to understand how they work but I would like to avoid that this time. The data on the virtual disk in question is highly deduplicated and it took quite a while to get it that way. Since
I can't find a way to copy/mirror the disk while keeping it fully deduplicated, I would need 3x the space to copy it all off, or a lot of time to load up and deduplicate a new virtual disk.
I have several questions:
1. How can a 3 column parity disk use parts of four physical disks? And can that be fixed without recreating the virtual disk?
2. When creating a virtual disk (for example a 3 column disk in a pool that has four or more physical drives), is there a way to specify which physical disks to use?
3. I understand that after a physical disk failure, the recovery process will move a virtual disk's allocation to a replacement disk, but can a virtual disk's allocation be moved manually among physical disks within the same storage pool
using a PS script?
4. Can a deduplicated virtual disk be moved/mirrored/backed up without expanding the data?
Any help is appreciated.

Im still fighting with storage pools and need more tests to be done and have a lot of questions my self but ther goes what I understood so far.
You may define physical disks used for virtual disk by Powershell ,
for list of all commands follow this:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh848705(v=wps.620).aspx ,
specific command defining physical disks to be used on already existing virtual disk:
Example 4: Manually assigning physical disks to a virtual disk
This example gets two physical disks that have already been added to the storage pool and designated as ManualSelect disks,
PhysicalDisk3 and PhysicalDisk4, and assigns them to the virtual disk
UserData.
PS C:\> Add-PhysicalDisk –VirtualDiskFriendlyName UserData –PhysicalDisks (Get-PhysicalDisk -FriendlyName PhysicalDisk3, PhysicalDisk4)

not sure what you are trying to achieve...
However you should not be referring to Luns via their logical device i.e. c0t0d0, but using the unique did device or the /global device. refer to scdidam -L which will list all the did devices across all nodes and map them to the logical device path.

  • Repair Degraded Storage Spaces Virtual Disk - All physical disks show healthy

I've seen this mentioned a few times but no definitive answers. I have a Storage Pool with 8 physical disks. Each physical disk shows as healthy and auto select. I have thick provisioned Virtual Disk created on this Storage Pool in a parity configuration.
This virtual disk is configured for the maximum amount on the storage pool. 50% of the space is available on the volume of the virtual disk...I click repair it does nothing.
Tested yanking a physical disk. Virtual disk becomes unavailable. No redundancy currently. How the heck do I fix this???

    Hi,
First please try to run a repair again with Powershell cmdlet:
    Repair-VirtualDisk
If issue still exists please try optimize to see if it will help:

    Repair-VirtualDisk:
Runs shows a progress bar for a very short period of time. Goes back to prompt. No messages or errors. Running Get-Virtual disk still shows the VD as degraded.

  • How to move my boot disk to an external Thunderbolt disk?

So my wife and I both have Late 2010 iMac's.  Her's died.  We got a new thin-style iMac one and restored her from time machine.  It was perfect - except for one thing.  The 1TB disk drive that's not replacable in her iMac *****.  It's just the 5400 RPM model and it's REALLY sluggish.  She's been using it a year now, and complains about the speed of her computer.
I know there are USB3 and Thunderbolt disk options out there - so I'm thinking that perhaps moving her boot disk to an external thunderbolt disk makes total sense - a little big disk for instance, is light-years faster - and she'll be able to work better with that.
The question is - how do I move her boot disk over to an external drive?  I'd also want to make sure the external disk is the default boot disk for this until it's time to replace the thing - is that possible?

This is meant to address several comments:
Of course, preferring a 7200 vs. 5400 rpm drive is a matter of personal preference (as is preferring an MBP over an iMac or whatever). My personal preference: the best quality (and that includes speed) I can afford/decide to spend for the intended task). I also do not buy drives that do not include their own power source.
And - to me - the 5400 is noticeably slower in everyday tasks. I had a malfunctioning external 7200 rpm drive; the mfr sent me another under warranty. I did not know that they had switched to 5400 rpm drives until I did my first clone to it. I was surprised that it seemed to take longer than usual, so I tested it: did one clone each from the same machine to two drives (same mfr, one 5400 and the other 7200) using CCC (did not use the machine or add/delete anything in between). The result: the clone to the 7200 drive finished in 38 minutes, the clone to the 5400 drive took 50 minutes. To me, that is a noticeable difference; I believe that cloning can be considered an everyday task.
The fact that the OP's drive is sluggish may, indeed, have another/different cause. I addressed his question whether or not he would be able to run his iMac from an external source. And yes, he can if he wishes to do so - I outlined the how-to steps.
For me personally, a 5400 drive will not do - for someone else, it might be just right. You may not perceive the difference in speed, but I do. Since that is a matter of preference and everyone has their own and is therefore entitled to their opinion - mine may be different than yours; however, that does not make it less valid.
That is my last post re. the differences of opinion; I'll be happy to discuss any technical issues related to the OP's concerns.

  • How to add a virtual disk into a 'guest VM' after VM has been created?

Well, it was easy when one need to add a virtual disk before creating a guest VM. All need to do was to edit the template and click on disk tab and create a virtual disk.
However the challenge comes after created a 'guest VM'. I need to add additional virtual disk into this 'guest VM'.
    This is what I did.
Click on Repositories tab --> Under repositories--> Virtual Disks. There is a green "+" sign. Click on it. It says create virtual disk. Follow the instruction, I enter the virtual disk name, size, and select if it is spare or non-spare. Hit ok. Well, everythings seems fine.
Next, I click on the "blue folder" icon which indicated import virtual disk. It asked me about Virtual disk download location.
    According to the manual, http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E27300_01/E27309/html/vmusg-repo.html#vmusg-repo-vdisk
Virtual Disk download location: The URL for the virtual disk file. The URL protocols supported are HTTP, HTTPS, and FTP. For example:http://example.com/vdisks/myvdisk.img
How can I determine what is the URL in my case?
Where is the newly created virtual disk located? Isn't it supposed to be in Oracle Server? But it doesn't have  a http server running there.
    Please help.
    Thank you.

Virtual disks can only be added and removed at runtime from a PVM. You don't even need to know anything special. Just create the vdisk and use the VMs settings to occupy another slot with the new vdisk.
But as I said… this works only with PVMs, not HVMs. In case of a HVM, you will need to shut down the VM and add the disk afterwards, then fire it back up.
The little folder with the blue down arrow is for importing an existing vdisk file from a web- or ftp server. If you have already created the vdisk, you won't need that.

  • How does OpenSPARC translate Virtual Address to Physical Address or Vice V

The i386 page address system has three levels: dir, page, offset. The 32 bits virtual address consists of dir, page, offset. When the process releases a virtual address to read a memory content, the MMU of i386 will translate the virtual address to physical address as follows:1,Based on the value of CR3 register and dir of virtual address, MMU returns the base address of page.2, Based on the the base address of page and value of page of virtual address, MMU returns the base address of physical page.3, Based on the base address of physical page and value of offset of virtual address, MMU returns physical memory address. 4, Read the content of physical memory address.
However, when I read the source code of the bw_r_tlb of OpenSPARCs MMU, I am puzzled. I am not clear how is the page address system of OpenSPARC implement.
Will you offer me some hints about it ? And are there any documents about it?

integrated with Linux kernel. In other words, it is implemented in Linux kernel. All the time, I think
Hypervisor API is an independent layer which provides an easy way to switch among all kinds of OS. But now,
I find it is a part of Linux. If so, what a role does Hypervisor API take? Why do we name it Hypervisor API
rather than a part of Linux? It do puzzle me, am I wrong?
The Hypervisor API ("application programming interface") is fully described in the UltraSPARC T1 Hypervisor API Specification, which is downloadable from page http://opensparc-t1.sunsource.net/index.html .
As a brief digression ... the term "Hypervisor API" has always seemed a bit oxymoronic to me -- given the historic equivalency of "application" to "nonprivileged". After all, isn't it more of an "SPI" (supervisor programming interface) because it services privileged supervisor (operating system) software, not nonprivileged (application) software? But if you think of a guest OS as an "application" (in the general sense of the word) supported by the Hypervisor, then "Hypervisor API" makes some sense.
Now, regarding Hypervisor API and Linux. If you read the UltraSPARC T1 Hypervisor API Specification, you'll find that Hypervisor API calls are defined (appropriately enough) in terms of native SPARC assembly language. I haven't looked at the Linux source code, but I'd bet a considerable sum of money that the Linux sun4v_intr_gettarget() function is a C-language wrapper around a SPARC assemly-language routine that sets up arguments, performs a trap to the Hypervisor intr_gettarget function, and returns the result(s) to the caller.
In any case, all actual Hypervisor code is fully implemented in the Hypervisor, not in Linux or Solaris or FreeBSD or Wind River Linux or any other OS running on top of the Hypervisor. Each OS may implement some "wrapper" code around Hypervisor calls, but no actual Hypervisor functionality actually resides in a guest OS. In fact, it can't reside in a guest OS because it must run in hyperprivileged mode and guest operating systems run in "merely" Privileged mode.

  • Understanding Virtual Disks and Sparse Allocation

    1. From the doc here , i understand that allocation is fast when "Sparse Allocation" is used while creating a virtual disk and is slow when using non-sparse allocation. But does this mean that we are just talking about allocation alone? i.,e a one time activity - creation.
    2. If my repository has 1TB space , then i see that i can create 'n' Virtual Disks each with a size of more than a 1TB(i.e, lets say 3-4 VDisks each with a size of 1TB); whereas, if i use non-sparse allocation, then i have to have the sum of the sizes of the disks to be lesser than 1TB.
FYI : I get an error if i allocate more than the space available: "OVMRU_002032E Excl-BigRepos - Repository size not large enough for new virtual disk of size: 999,999,999"
    3. When i install OVS on a RAID-1 partition(with two virtual disks - say 100GB and 400GB), then, OVS picks up the 100GB disk by default and installs in there. And this 100GB is not 'visible' henceforth. Reasons?

    1. Correct. Spare allocation means as the data is written the disk is expanded. This means, you're doing two operations as opposed to one with non sparse allocation. Thus, when writing to a virtual disk with a sparse allocation, the "write" could take longer if the disks doesn't have free space available.
    2. Too a degree.... Yes. It depends on what storage you're using. On some storage, using compression and deduplication, this is not entire accurate. But, this is independent of anything to do with Oracle VM. Many storage environments now use "virtual allocation".
    3. The default "LUN" used by by OVS can not be used for anything else. It is reserved. You will not able to use any free space on that LUN. The OVM manager expect "raw disks/LUN/shares" to used as storage. Such storage my be free of any filesystem, partition or etc. The Pools and repos necessary to run Oracle VM use a ocfs2 filesystem.

  • How to move all Photos to external Drive/make that default storage

I have stored all of my IPhotos on my internal Mac drive. This was a dumb mistake cause now it is full. So I would like to make my tera drive the default location for all future photos and move all existing photos to the tera drive as well.
How do I do that without losing all my photos???
    Thanks
    Dennis

First: Make sure this “tera drive” is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Otherwise you will have problems with your Library.
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • How to move from one family plan to another within Verizon?

My son currently is part of one family plan we have which is for non-smart phones.  It is a really old plan and a really old phone.  I also have another family plan (share everything) for my Galaxy S3 (no other people on that share everything plan yet).  Here is what I want to do:
    1) get him a new Galaxy S4 through Amazon
    2) put him on my share everything plan (share my data, and pay $40/mo for phone service)
    3) but keep his existing number.
Is that possible?  It does not seem possible using the Amazon online system.  When I try to add another line of service on my Share Everything plan and port his number, it says not possible to port from Verizon to Verizon.  Do I have to leave Verizon and go to ATT in order to port numbers?

You will probably have to call customer service and get their help transferring the line between the two accounts. Are both accounts listing you as the account owner?
If they have two different account owners you will probably have to do an Assumption of Liability instead.

  • How does Mozilla (Firefox) check wheter a Root certificate within its storage is trustworthy?

I've read the following article: http://zitseng.com/archives/7489
The article states about government (root) certificates being installed on Mac's.
Since Firefox is all about privacy, I'm wondering why it's possible that Firefox also gets shipped with some of the certificates listed. I have to admit not liking the idea of, for example, the Chinese government (China Internet Network Information Center) slotting into my internet traffic with a self-signed certificate..
The general question in case here is: what does Mozilla require to mark a certificate as trustworthy? Discussing the matter of privacy, any (Chinese/US) government certificate being valid doesn't really support that, reputation wise..

    I've read the maintenance policy.
So far I seem to have the following understanding: there is no check whether an issuer is trustworthy, they just check whether they issue valid certificates (according to Mozilla) and revoke them upon certain events.
At the matter of privacy that seems to be a clear issue, with governments having the possibility of issuing certificates and intercepting traffic. This gives them a possibility for executing a [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibF36Yyeehw MITM], doesn't it?

Your VMs need to be offline while you do this. Once you've done this, you can use Oracle VM Manager to remove the original .img file and replace it with the physical block device copy. This is low-risk, as the .img file will still be there if the new block device doesn't work.
Keep in mind that you will need a unique block device for every .img file you have.

Do you mean that you cannot mount the Journal virtual drives on the Storage Space? Please run the command “Get-VirtualDisk” to check the status of the virtual disk.
You could run the command below to make your storage space read-only.

  • Iscsi virtual disk wizard shows no servers (and no volumes)

Hi, in windows 2012 DataCenter, I installed the Iscsi target role and went on to set an iscsi disk.
but when launching "new Iscsi virtual disk" wizard (Server Manager\File and Storage Services\iSCSI -> new iscsi virtual disk)
I see no servers in list (upper windows) and instead it just states "no eligible servers are available".
it happens on both of my servers.. not just one..
    anyone has any idea?

Sorry, I'm I little bit confused.
    Let me explain my intentions:
I have 2 servers (hosts) but no NAS. at first I've configured a Hyper-v replica between 2 VMs - which has worked perfectly. then, I wanted to automate the procedure of the failover from the primary VM to its replica.
I realized that for that I need to use the cluster features.
now, since a cluster demands the VMs to reside on shared storage, I thought I'll trick it into thinking that the storage is shared while it's really local. (that is what the "Iscsi target server" is for right? sharing a portion of the local disk to seem as
    connected via Iscsi).
anyway, maybe my thinking is wrong, or maybe there is a different way to do that, but all I really need is for the replica failover process to be automated.
    Thanks again, Gil.
