How to procedurally disable hotkeys in Photoshop?
Hi all,
I am coding a Photoshop Automation Plugin in C++. I have a dialog box with a text box. When you type into the text box the key presses trigger Photoshop hotkeys. Does anyone know if there is an SDK function to disable hotkeys?
Thanks,
Ashley Davis
Christoph points out a very good method for creating your own grid pattern.
There is one already provided that may be sufficient. Choose Edit - Fill - Pattern, load the standard Patterns set, and choosing the grid pattern Tiles-Smooth from the provided Patterns...

How can I disable FF hotkeys as there are problems when I use other programs at the same time?
Thanks a lot for the answer Shmoopie99,
"If your plugin is running as a separate process it should not be getting any events meant for Photoshop if your plugin process is active."
Yes that is almost correct. I dont want to get into useless details but I have no problems there and events meant for Photoshop dont disturb me.
"If you're spinning an event loop in your Photoshop side of things, only process UI update events - ignore any other events such as input events."
I cant ignore input events because I need them. The problem is not my tool getting input events from Photoshop, is Photoshop the one geting events comming to me.
The only connection to Photoshop I keep in my process is that is parented to photoshop using the HWND handler.
I must insist in the question then... How to make Photoshop wait while my window is in focus? How to disable accelerators? -
How can I disable the splash screen in Photoshop CC?
Normally there's a welcome screen where I can disable the splash screen, however since there's no such screen in CC I wonder how I can disable the splash screen?
Anyone can help me out?I think you may need to make some registry changes if you want to get rid if it. For applications like Lightroom and bridge and droplets are not going to use your shortcuts to start Photoshop up they will use what in the windows registry for key Photoshop.exe for command open and edit as will file associations when you double click on an image file type associated with Photoshop

When Photoshop says "measuring memory" during startup, it is asking the OS how much RAM is available and what hard disks are available for scratch disks.
If you have network volumes mounted that are unavailable, then the OS may take a while to time out on accessing those drives.
The same goes if you have a bad USB drive connected. -

How do i disable menu items in Help manu, Photoshop cs6?
How do i disable menu items in Help manu, Photoshop cs6?
I packaged Photoshop cs6 using AAMEE CS6.
I need to some menu items to disable.
can any one please tell the process of doing , or which registries or files need to edit.
Appreciate the immediate response.
thanks in advance.Hello8
Given the fact that you speak about AAMEE, it's not clear if you search for an automated and remote way to do it on multiple machines or not.
(and therefore if this thread should be moved to the relevant forum, http://forums.adobe.com/community/download_install_setup/creative_suite_enterprise_deploym ent )
To disable menu items, simply go to Edit>Menus and click on the eyeball next to the menus you do not want.
It is then possible to save it in a workspace that by default will be located there: Documents and Settings/[user name]/Application Data/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS6/Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings/Workspaces (Modified)
I'm not sure if Photoshop will start if the default workspaces are removed, as there is an option to restore them in the preferences.
Also, this is not customer support, but a forum fielded by volunteers that answer when they can, so inviting for an"immediate response" has no bearing; and might even have the opposite effect, but thanks for doing it in a polite and non too demanding way! -

How do I disable Photoshop on old laptop so I can download it on my new one. I cannot open it to uninstall it on my old one. It seems to have disappeared. I have the CC now and just want to put it on my new computer.
you could reinstall it on your old computer and then click help>deactivate. or, if you have cc on your old computer, open your cc app and sign out off cc.
if you don't have access to your old computer you can ask adobe support to reset your activation, http://www.adobe.com/support/chat/ivrchat.html -

LOL, I can't even begin to complain with the number if times I misread questions, and then try to break my own record for the number of typos in a single post.
The image above was taken on a photgraphic weekend where the group (of all young ladies ) I was travelling with, set us a photography challenge. The one above was my response to a 'faceless portrait'. The only other one I attempted was this response for a picture of a 'wild animal', featuring camera club president Liz.

How do I disable all non-essential components in the CS6 installer
A new question in the spirit of http://forums.adobe.com/thread/548877 and http://forums.adobe.com/message/2778575, where I asked this question for CS4 and CS5 and eventually discovered how to do this (at least for CS4; CS5 was a mess...): How do I disable all the non-essential components in the Photoshop CS6 installer?
I already found the payloads/Media_db.db sqlite 3 database and wiped the DependencyData table. This goes a long way - unlike CS5, which was a maze of hidden xml configs and sqlite databases, for CS6 just wiping this single table will give the user full control over what the installer will put in the computer. With the dependencies wiped, we can now see all the stuff it's actually going to install:
Bridge (normal and x64) - 187 and 262 MB
CMaps (normal and x64) - 7.2 and 7.2 MB
CSXS Extensions - 1.3MB
CSXS Infrastructure - 6.8MB
Color - photoshop, EU, JA, NA - 1.5, 2.1, 3.0, 2.5MB
Video profiles - 4.7KB
Dynamic Link Media Server - 96MB
DynamicLink Support - 6.1MB
ExtendScript Toolkit - 19MB
Extension Manageer - 16MB
Fonts recommended (normal and x64) - 110 and 110MB (why are there x86 and x64 versions? more of an open question than one that really needs an answer, but this is not how fonts work. There are no separate x86 and x64 flavoured OpenType fonts)
Fonts required (normal and x64) - 123 and 123MB
Hunspell Linguistics Plugin (normal and x64) - 181 and 181MB
Linguistics (normal and x64) - 46 and 46MB
Mini Bridge (normal and x64) - 4.0MB
PDF Library Files (normal and x64) - 75 and 75MB
Photoshop (normal and x64) - 486 and 563MB
Photoshop Support - 9.4MB
Player for Embedding 3.3 (normal and x64) - 21 and 26MB
Switchboard 2.0 - 1.1MB
Type Support (normal and x64) - 6 and 6MB
Winsoft Linguistics Plugin (normal and x64) - 8.2 and 8.5MB
XMP Panels - 4.9MB
ColorCommonSetCMYK - 13MB
ColorCommonSetRGB - 8.6KB
Camera Profiles Installer - 285MB
MSVC++2005 redist. (normal and x64) - 11 and 11MB
MSVC++2008 redist. (normal and x64) - 11 and 11MB
MSVC++2010 redist. (normal and x64) - 11 and 11MB
MSVC80_CRT (normal and x64) - 0.0 and 0.0KB
PDF Settings - 2.4MB
Camera Raw 7 (normal and x64) - 22 and 24MB
Suite Shared Configuration - 3.2MB
Some of these things we really want installed (Photoshop, CMaps, XMP panels, Type Support and required fonts and color profiles are pretty much the minimal set required for a functional Photoshop installation), but some of these things really have no right to be silentedly installed. There's a good gigabyte of nonsense that someone who just wants Photoshop has no need for. Denying them the option to unselect these things during installation is a bit evil (whatever happened to the 'advanced' or 'custom' installation option? That was a good option).
That said, there's still something funky going on - unselecting all components indicates that the installation will required 0.0KB on disk. However, selecting Photoshop CS6 x64, which indicates its size is 563MB, results in an installation that requires 677MB on disk. Similar things happen for other components; CMaps is 7.2MB, but when you select it, it suddenly requires 121MB on disk.
Much last last time, I fully appreciate the install team's choices in making sure the installer will always work as long as people don't tamper with it, but I'm not one of those people - I do tamper with it, because I want to control exactly what lands on my disk. So: how do I find out what these secret things are that are not listed after wiping the dependency data so that I can explicitly pick individual components? Which additional steps are required to reveal the hidden dependencies that will apparently still be installed, or aren't factored into the size indication for the various components? And finally, how do I make the installer NOT determine that "this is not a genuine installer, you may have a counterfeit product" =)
I know it's been altered; I modified it, because I think your install process is trying to force stuff onto my computer that I never asked for, nor will ever use (I know they're quality products, they just have no right to exist on my computers. If I had the choice to say no, I'd acknowledge them as quality products instead).

NB: if Eric Wilde ends up replying to this post: I still remember your willingness to help figure this out for CS5, two years ago. Thank you again for that.I can see why you wouldn't want to release information that lets people set up arbitrary installers, but that's why I mostly wanted those two specific hashes. The installer team can just generate them without ever saying how, and we will only be able to use them to validate the installer for the modification that lets you pick components. This should in no way interfere with the desire to prevent dangerous installers making it into the wild; in fact, it kind of guarantees that's impossible.
I know you can't guarantee it'll work or test it, and that's fine. Past experience has shown that CS3, CS4 and CS5 work fine with updates (and most updates don't apply to Photoshop, they apply to the additional components that I traditionally don't install), so I'm pretty sure it'll work fine with CS6 too, although of course it could go wrong in which case I can always fall back to a normal install.
Would you be willing to ask the install team whether they could generate just these two numbers, based on the single SQL command run on Media_db.db from the main payload directory? I can fully understand not wanting to give the "here is how you generate the hashes" information, but generating two specific numbers that don't work for anything but this specific query should be just as safe as the various hashes we can already see for the other Media_db.db files in the various payload directories (so they wouldn't reveal anything not already known about how to reverse engineer the hashing algorithm). It'd help tech-savvy customers quite a bit without playing into the hands of criminally minded jerks (I actually had the pleasure of running into a duped CS3 Extended disc several years ago! I had ordered CS3 for personal use, and mysteriously received a CS3 extended version with a volume licensing key in what looked like an official normal CS3 box. Needless to say, authorities and Adobe were notified).
<<I think the right answer to this issue is to simply remove from the products those items that are not required to execute the product. That's actually something we're aggressively pursuing this summer so that the product size reduces in future releases, particularly for PS.>>
It's not possible to take components out of the payloads directory without the installer complaining that errors have occurred. It really wants all those files there when it starts =(
<<Have you investigated using AAMEE? I don't think that will get rid of all the "extraneous" pieces; but, it does provide some flexibility in creating an install package that can then be pushed out through normal deployment tools (e.g. SCCM).>>
I did, but unfortunately AAMEE requires the use of a volume license key, which I don't have. We only have individual products keys for the machines that will get Photoshop CS6.

how do I disable time machine? I want to use my external drive as additional storage. But it mirrors everything I edit. If I remove a document, it removes it from the external drive as well.
I purchased a 1 TB WD passport drive, formatted for Mac. I set it up originally (mistakenly) to backup time machine. I went back and set it to "do not backup" It still backs up evey document I edit. If I add a document when the drive is disconnected, it automatically adds it to the external drive the next time connect to the passport drive. If I remove a document the same thing happens.
I need additional storage to free up space on my laptop hard drive. This is not working the way I want it to. Help!Do not backup your startup volume to another partition on the same drive. If the drive fails you have nothing. Always backup to another drive or volume on another drive.
The I/O error usually means there's a problem with the drive. Clone ASAP, then repartition and reformat the main drive. Then restore the clone. Here's the basic process:
You will have to backup your OS X partition to an external drive, boot from the external drive, use Disk Utility to repartition and reformat your hard drive back to a single volume, then restore your backup to the internal hard drive.
Get an empty external hard drive and clone your internal drive to the external one.
Boot from the external hard drive.
Erase the internal hard drive.
Restore the external clone to the internal hard drive.
Clone the internal drive to the external drive
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the icon for the external drive and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After startup do the following:
Erase internal hard drive
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your internal hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Do not quit Disk Utility.
Restore the clone to the internal hard drive
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the internal hard drive. Source means the external startup drive.
Note that the Source and Destination drives are swapped for this last procedure. -
How can I disable window snapping/docking?
Ever since CS4 came out I feel like I've been less productive in Photoshop due to annoying window dock/snapping. Windows are constantly sticking and resizing themselves in ways that blocks the work I am trying to do. Also the main image itself automatically resizes to feet the work space and I find this also an annoyance. This is my main question: How can I disable "sticky" windows?
In fact if there a way to get the old classic skin back that would be great, also...because all the programs in CS4 are missing a handle bar at the top of the window, making it difficult to find a place to click to drag the window around...which also wastes time. Sometimes the classic skin is visible underneath buttons in graphic glitches..
Finally, is there a way to disable hardware acceleration completely? My processor is fast enough that it can complete tasks faster than the latency of accessing the GPU, so hardware acceleration actually slows things down. Also the hardware code has bugs in it that prevents me from opening massive images (eg, 21600 x 21600 image crashes).Edit, preferences. Everything is there to play with

How do i disable the startup splash screen in elements 9
How do i disable the startup splash screen in elements 9
Try making a direct shortcut for the Organizer and Editor. Make sure you have the correct file path as there is more than one exe file. You can then launch the programs directly from the desktop bypassing the welcome screen. This is generally better as the welcome screen leaves background processes running.
On Windows, Right click anywhere on the desktop and select New >> Shortcut
Then click the browse button and navigate to:
"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Elements 9 Organizer\PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe"
Then click Next; then click Finish
Then make a direct shortcut for the Editor in a similar manner.
On Windows, Right click anywhere on the desktop and select New >> Shortcut
Then click the browse button and navigate to:
"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 9\PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe"
Then click Next; then click Finish
N.B. on 64 bit systems navigate to Program Files (x86)
