How to read encoder RPM

I need to be able to read the RPM of an encoder.  I am using a 4096 step per revolution encoder with a UMI-7764 connected to a PCI-7344.  Looking to measure speeds up to 500 RPM.  I have seen a few other places where people have asked to do this but have found other solutions.  Due to a large installed base of multiple systems (around 40), I cant change the the hardware configuration.
Specifics:
Encoder 4096 counts per revolution wired to encoder input (A,A-,B,B-)
Max speed 500 RPM
NI Motion card PCI-7344 /w UMI-7764
LV 8.5 and 10
I made a few attempts to measure number of counts in a unit of time but nothing remotely accurate or stable resulted.
Thank you
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Indicator,
This will likely involve you using the Read Position.flx VI (more info about it in the Context Help or the the Online Manual). I think your idea of measuring the difference in counts versus the change in time would be the way to go. Do you have any screenshots you would be able to share on your initial implementation?
You mentioned other places where people have asked about this, what other methods did they use?

  • Help me...How to read the content if "Transfer-Encoding:chunked" is used?

    I am doing a project for internet control using Java,PHP and MySql.All sites should go through the proxy server only.If the HTTP header contains Content-Length,am getting the content length as below:
    public class HTTPResponseReader extends HTTPMessageReader
        String statusCode;
        public HTTPResponseReader(InputStream istream) throws IOException,                     NoSuchElementException
      BufferedInputStream distream = new BufferedInputStream(istream);
      retrieveHeader(distream);
      StringTokenizer st =  new StringTokenizer(new String(HTTPMessageReader.toArray(header)));
      versionProtocol = st.nextToken();
      statusCode = st.nextToken();
      String s;
      while (st.hasMoreTokens())
            s = st.nextToken();
            if (s.equals("Transfer-Encoding:"))
           transferEncoding = new String(st.nextToken());
         if (s.equals("Content-Length:"))
           contentLength = Integer.parseInt(st.nextToken());
         if (s.equals("Connection:"))
          connection = new String(st.nextToken());
          if (connection.equals("keep-alive")) mustCloseConnection = false;
       retrieveBody(distream);
    }After getting the Content-Length,i used read method to read the content upto that content length.Then i concatenated the HTTP header and body and the requested site was opened.But some sites dont have Content-Length.Instead of that,Transfer-Encoding is used.I got the HTTP Response header as "Transfer-Encoding:chunked" for some sites.If this encoding is used how to get the length of the message body and how to read the content.
    Can anybody help me.
    Thanks in advance...

    Why don't you use HttpUrlConnection class to retrieve data from HTTP server? This class already supports chunked encoding...
    If you want to do anything by yourself then you need to read HTTP RFC and find all required information. Well in two words you may reject advanced encoding by specifying HTTP 1.0 in your request or download chunked answer manually. Read RFC anyway :)

  • How to read a text/html file in java regardless of its encoding?

    Hi All,
    How to read a text/html file in java regardless of its encoding?
    1. Is there any way to identify that a file (read using FileInputStream/or any other means with java.io package) has been saved with which type of encoding i.e. whether the file is using ANSI encoding or Unicode encoding or other?
    2. Is there any standard way to read an encoded file (i.e. files having UTF-16 format for Asian locales character support) and un-encoded file (i.e. files having ordinary ANSI format) correctly without knowing the user input?
    The problem is that while creating an instance of 'InputStreamReader' (ISR) we can pass the encoding type used (otherwise it takes the system's default encoding type), and the ISR expects the file to be in the same encoding format otherwise it reads it as some junk. But we don't know which file the user is going to pass whether it is Unicode (for Asian locales file should be in Unicode) with or ANSI coded (for non-Asian / English locales user generally uses ANSI encoding).
    Regards,
    Sam

    1. There is no reliable way of guessing the encoding of a file without that information. Thats why XML for example has very strict rules wrt. it's encoding (short form: use UTF-8 or UTF-16, if you use anything else, you'll have to specify it)
    2. you might be able to make an educated guess if the possible range of encodings is limited, but it will probably never be 100% certain
    3. The HTML file might have a header entry "<meta http-equiv..." that tells you about it's encoding. You could try to read the start of the file and see if you find that, then if you found it re-read the entire file.

  • Encoding - quoted-printable & charset utf-16 how to read

    hi,
    I have this following Multipart request comes from a system. Our application has to receive this part and process.
    ------=_Part_26425_3101246.1109752031682
    Content-Type: text/plain; name=Mojo.txt; charset=utf-16
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
    Content-Location: Mojo.txt
    =FE=FF=00M=00o=00j=00o
    ------=_Part_j%B
    I could able to receive and save the file locally. As it mentioned, it is encoded using "quoted-printable", so I decoded using the following method.
    MimeUtility.decode(fInputStream, "quoted-printable");
    and can able to decode the file. Once the decode process is done, I need to read the value of the text file. I understand from the headers(charset=utf-16), I assume it is a UTF-16 file, so i reading the text using the following code but getting some extra ?? characters in front of the actual text.
    BufferedReader bufferedReader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(fis,"utf-16"));
                        String nextLine;
         while((nextLine = bufferedReader.readLine()) != null)
              System.out.println(nextLine);
           How to read this correctly?.

  • How to read/use RPC/Encoded WSDL in BPEL

    Hi All,
    We are developing a new application using Oracle BPEL and interface with an existing application.
    The existing application (in mainframes) sends us the wsdl in rpc/encoded format.
    How to read thie wsdl into BPEL? What we found so far is that we can use document/literal wsdl only.
    Is there a way to read rpc/encoded wsdl in bpel?
    Or a way to convert rpc/encoded wsdl into doucment/literal format wsdl so that it can be used in bpel?
    Or any java code in between which can do this transformation?
    Please help.
    Thanks
    Shiva

    Steve,
    You need to do the following in order to get file and folder names from File/FTP adapter.
    1. fileAdapterInboundHeader.wsdl, FTPAdapterInboundHeader.wsdl files does have header structure for file and FTP adapter respectively. These files have the following Header definition:
    <types>
    <schema attributeFormDefault="qualified" elementFormDefault="qualified"
    targetNamespace="http://xmlns.oracle.com/pcbpel/adapter/file/"
    xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"
    xmlns:FILEAPP="http://xmlns.oracle.com/pcbpel/adapter/file/">
    <element name="InboundFileHeaderType">
    <complexType>
    <sequence>
    <element name="fileName" type="string"/>
    <element name="directory" type="string"/>
    </sequence>
    </complexType>
    </element>
    </schema>
    </types>
    <!-- Header Message -->
    <message name="InboundHeader_msg">
    <part element="tns:InboundFileHeaderType" name="inboundHeader"/>
    </message>
    2. You need to create a variable of message type InboundHeader_msg.
         2.a. Open variable creation dialog box. Choose Message Type as type and open the Type Chooser.
         2.b. Expend Message Type and then expend Project WSDL Files.
         2.c. You will see fileAdapterInboundHeader.wsdl/ftpAdapterInboundHeader.wsdl there.
         2.d. Expend the wsdl file and select message type InboundHeader_msg.
    3. Now you have your header variable, double click on Receive activity and go to Adapter tab.
    4. Select header variable you have created using above steps as Header Variable.
    5. Add an assign activity to get fileName and directory from the header variable you have created.
    6. Your header variable will be populated while adapter reads the file.

    hi,
    U r retriving the elements by tag name.So it just chks the tag name ie.<book> & gives u array of elements.But u need retrive d attribute of <book> tag itself.
    =Solution =====
    Add one more statement ----> var[]= doc.getElementsByName("book");
    Now u hav book elements as an array & can retrive id in for loop
    for(var; var.length;var++)
    doc.element[var].id.value

    Try reposting that with tags (replace the {'s with ['s).
    Long story short, I think the FAQ and examples would go a long way towards explaining this, but you basically can check the content type, or check if the content contains parts, and parse each part separately.

    Could it have something to do with this warning during boot the .war?
    [WARNING] Using platform encoding (Cp1252 actually) to copy filtered resources, i.e. build is platform dependent!
    If I use local files it prints ISO8859_1 for one of the files.

    All of that is because the HTTP server attaches a charset to every response. That's what you are seeing. The server may be using some logic to determine the actual encoding of the file it returns, or it may simply be using a hard-coded charset which may or may not be suitable for reading the file. The latter is unfortunately more likely.
    By the way if you receive an XML file over HTTP, and the HTTP charset differs from the encoding declared in the XML document, there's a rule which says the HTTP charset takes precedence. (I don't know where that rule is documented, but I have encountered that situation in real life -- the data came from a Google application -- and that rule was indeed the right thing to do.)
    If you're still under the impression that there's something which can look at a file and determine what encoding was used to produce it, let me tell you that there isn't. Sure, there's that XML prolog thing which works for XML files (if they weren't botched by the producer), but for text files in general there's no way to determine their encoding. Short of asking the person who created them, that is.

    I suppose your question may refer to the setContentType method discussed here:

    If not, ask a more specific question.
