How to rebuild email database?

I need to rebuild email databases on an Xserve running Mac Server OS 10.6.8. Any ideas?

Server Admin has an option, but I would download mailbfr.
If you install mailbfr:
You can run rebuild a single user
sudo mailbfr -m user
Or reconstruct the entire database (often necessary when single user rebuild doesn't solve)
sudo mailbfr -f

If you have any issue where one side of the Database is corrupt and replication isn't working properly. Here are the steps that you can follow
1. Confirm the NIC configurations on both servers before proceeding.
2. Stop exiting replication connection by doing the following:
To shut down Directory Services replication:
Follow this procedure on each Directory Services server. If one server is already down, restart it and then perform this procedure.
i. Open a command window and change folders to the following location:
C:\Program Files\Cisco\Desktop\bin
This is the default location.
ii. At the prompt, type
LDAPUtil /C <IP address>
where <IP address> is the IP address of this server. Directory Services replication is shut down.
3. On the PC hosting the primary database, stop the Cisco Desktop LDAP Monitor.
4. Remove all contents from the files repl.log and repl.log.lock from the \Cisco\Desktop\database directory.
5. Delete all files in the \Cisco\Desktop\logs\replica directory.
6. Open a command window on the primary database computer.

8. In the Cisco\Desktop\bin directory, type the command:
slapcat -f slapd.conf -l backup.ldif -c
and press Enter.
A file called backup.ldif is generated.
9. Copy the backup.ldif file to the computer on which the secondary LDAP service is installed, into the Cisco\Desktop\bin folder.
10. On the PC hosting the secondary database, stop the Cisco Desktop LDAP Monitor.
11. Rename the existing folder Cisco\Desktop\database to Cisco\Desktop\old_database.
12. Create a new folder called Cisco\Desktop\database.
13. Copy DB_CONFIG and all files with a *.dat extension from the old_database folder to the database folder.
14. In the database folder, create an empty file called rep.log.
15. Open a command window on the secondary database computer.
16. Change directories to Cisco\Desktop\bin (the drive and exact location of this folder depends on where the service was installed).
17. In the Cisco\Desktop\bin directory, type the command:
slapadd -f slapd.conf -l backup.ldif -c
and press Enter.
18. Type exit and press Enter to close the DOS window.
19. Restart the Cisco Desktop LDAP Monitor on the secondary computer.
20. Restart the Cisco Desktop LDAP Monitor on the primary computer.
Run PostInstall on B to setup the replication again.
Monitor the taskmgr to make sure that the slurpd.exe and slapd.exe are running and that there are no .rej files in the replica folder.
Following steps you can use to identify if there is any Replication issue on the CAD Database:
Stop the cad services on both sides of the system. (Cisco Desktop LDAP Monitor Service, Sync)
Clear all the files that end in .rej from the replica folder (\Program Files\Cisco\Desktop\log\replica)
Restart CAD server A, then restart CAD server B and monitor the replica folder. If there is any new .rej files generated it will mean that the corruption of the LDAP db is still in the system and stage two will need to be completed.

While you are here talking about the LDAP - why have you disabled Anonymous binding to the LDAP in CAD with ICM 8.5.2?
We used to be able to use the free LDAP browser to examine the LDAP and export it for various reasons - bulk checking, saving into spreadsheets for "as is" documentation and so on.
I recently tried to look at the LDAP on a customer's install and anonymous binding was not allowed. Any reason why this was removed? And when can we have it back?

Hi:
I tried follwoing your advice.
I can do the Ctrl-A to select all songs in the iTunes libary.
I can right-click and select Delete,
but when I do, I do not get the 3 options that you mentioned
(Cancel, Keep Files, and Move To Recycle Bin)
I get a dialog box stating:
Are you sure you want to remove the selcted songs from your iTunes library?
These songs will also be remove from any iPod or iPhone which synchronizes with your iTunes library.
Why am I not getting the options you stated above ?
I have seen you oprions on a Mac at best Buy, but I am running an HP laptop under Vista Home Premium.
Then has a Remove or Cancel button to be clicked.
If I follow through with the above, will it wipe out my music library ?
How do I go about rebuilding the databse ?

Sorry DaleB, I have redone my library so many times, I forgot about this prompt. Just click 'yes'/'remove' to that question.
Reloading the library will only make your iPod resync again, thats all.

A related issue.
I made a copy (backup ?) of the Music folder in Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit OS, to my Desktop. If something corrupts the Music in iTunes, will this be a "good enough" backup to be able to restore the music by moving it back into the Music folder, or will soemthing be missing ?

I did not move them arounsd outsice of iTunes.
I copied & pasetd them in iTunes, but in some cases, they became subfolders.
e.g., I may have a main folder in iTunes called "Rolling Stones", and subfolder iteled after their Greatest Hits album "Hot Rocks". Initially,
Hot Rocks was a folder at the same level as Rolling Stones. Thenm I create a subfolder within Rollng Stones and then copied and pasted all of the MP3 files from the main folder (Hot Rocks) into the subfolder (Hot Rocks), and then deleted the main folder (Hot Rocks). But, iTunes now tells me it can find the songs. The Apple guy at best Buy showed me how to delete the current database without deleting the actual tunes, and then rebuild the database, all in a few mouse clicks. But, this was on a Mac...I do not know if iTunes for Windows has the same menu features as the Mac version. I just forgot the steps that he went through.

TS3276 how do i rebuild the database when starting up Mail version 5.2?

Having real problems with Mail. Sent a large attachment earlier today which is now in a 'Recovered Message' folder. Since then I can't send or receive any emails from any account, ie BT Yahoo, via Mail, although I can do this from the internet at BT Yahoo. A friend suggested 'rebuilding the database' by holding down certain keys at launch of Mail. Will this work and if so what are the keys to hold down?

You can rebuild your mailbox by selecting the mailbox and then selecting the menu item "Mailbox >> Rebuild".
You can optimize your mailbox by "vacuuming" the databases too (huge improvement). Open Termina.app and use:

Most simple solution: restore from your back up.
Other than that, try Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

I have been trying to figure out why my mac mail will start to down load, and then it stops. I have 50 messages that i'm trying to POP and it start out fine, then after 10 or so messages it stops. i have tried to delete the messages from the server to see if there is some specific message that is causing problems to no success.
so now i'm trying to just remove the old Messages and start a new mail data file from scratch. then move the old messages into it, that is if it can be done.

I have many duplicates in the email database that are not in Contacts. So this must be a different database? Emails take forever to auto complete.

Ernie, I appear to have two address files. One is called AddressBook-v22.abcddb and the other AddressBook-v22.abcddb. But they are in two different folders that hold all of their associated files like metadata. In other words, two databases.
The dates on all files are recent in both folders. Are the two databases required because one if the iCloud database and the other Daylite? Why such a strange setup?
When I open Contacts, I have "All on My Mac", "Daylite -- All Contacts" and then "iCloud". Can I not configure Contacts to use only iCloud or All on My Mac? Perhaps this would speed up the search on the nearly 2,000 record for each database.
I configured the address and calendar that lives on this computer as primary and it is backed up to iCloud. Daylite accesses the iCloud integrating its data to iCloud and then back to Contacts/Calendar.
Barnie, I deleted the file MailRecents-v4.abcdmr. But the slow down continues. The problem appears to reside with the Contacts data. As I start typing a name in the email address field, it takes five to 7 seconds to list suggestions. And most of the suggestions contain exactly the same information repeated 2 to 3 times (duplicates).
I routinely dedupe the Contacts file with the dedupe function. It usually finds 50 or more.
(As a side note, I think CardDav and CalDav are works in progress. Either that, or third party applications like Daylite have not figured out how to integrate with CardDav and CalDav properly at this time.)

TC HDD deleted (OMG)- how to rebuild my iphoto library?

days ago I realized that my HDD inside this TC had a severe problem that had to be solved. However in the end I deleted this HDD just to make in run again. UHHH! Fortunately I did not reformat the drive.
I could find most of these files by using "Data rescue 4" - but: How could I rebuild my iphoto library? Is there any tool available? Data rescue created many many folders including all photos I've ever had on my system, not only those which were stored by iPhoto. Any way to find out, which should be kept?
And how to rebuild my itunes library?

The photos are available (they seem not to be damaged!), but they are located in different folders. How to manage?
An iPhoto Library is a complex database. You have retrieved the photos, but not the database files, and even if you could retrieve them, they would point to the original filenames in the original folders. The same goes for your iTunes library.
If you cannot restore the original libraries /Mediatheken, you can only create new libraries and add the photos, folder by folder, and recreate your events and albums. Then rate the photos again and delete the photos you do not want.
