How to reduce unwanted callers for elderly parents
I am interested in Do Not Disturb for my parents' landline. They have many charity solicitors (we placed their number on donotcall.gov, which only works with for-profit telemarketers, I believe) who call and convince them to make pledges, even occasionally give credit card info over the phone. They are not at the point of taking credit cards away, but are softies for callers, it seems.
Can Do Not Disturb still be ordered from Verizon? This seems like it would be a good option for them. If not, does anyone have other suggestions? Thanks!
I don't know if Verizon has anything worthwhile to stop "Unavailable" or "Out of Area" callers, or caller id's that only show a state name. My mother was having the same problem, and we finally got a her a Panasonic KX-TG9341S phone system - it has a base station with 4 cordless phones and has both a "Call Block" and a "Night Mode" feature.
Even though Verizon's service will not block an "Unavailable" number, even though it has a phone number associated with it, the Call Block feature will hold either 25 or 50 numbers and when those numbers call, the system immediately answers with a busy tone. And the night mode will not ring any of the phones during a time period that you can set. Verizon is the only company I've ever had phone service with that shows only state names, or Unavailable or Out of Area even though it displays the number - I assume Verizon does a lot of business with the telemarketers. I know that the "Anonymous Call Block" only works with caller ids of "Private".
So, if you can't get it done with Verizon, there are a lot of new phone systems you can buy that will duplicate those feature lacking from Verizon. The Panasonic model I mention is about 2 or 2 1/2 years old by now, they probably have a newer one with the same features under a different model number.

How to set up ipad for elderly user
I want some ideas for setting up an iPad for my 89 year old father who has never used a computer and has some visual impairment. The only thing he wants to do is listen to audiobooks. I want the titles of the books to be no more than one click away from the desktop. I want him to be able to control the stop/start and volume with a clearly laid out dialog box on the desktop. Help please...
Hi,
I have been looking into this subject. We are buying my father-in law an ipad for his 91st birthday in two weeks. He had unsuccessful surgery for a detached retina a couple of years ago and so has vision (not too good) in only one eye. When we were researching how and if he'd benefit from an ipad (which he wants) we weren't sure, but then I read about VoiceOver that is built into every ipad. We're all very excited about it.
http://www.apple.com/accessibility/ipad/vision.html
Because you said they have a desktop, they can also set up Home Sharing between their desktop and the ipad if they have a wireless connection. If not, they just need an inexpensive wireless router and a little help setting it up. We're getting a $40 ish Netgear for him that we paid $80.00 for two years ago. They're practicall plug an play and need only cable modem box, which most have these days.
Your father/parents will be able to do more than listen to audio books. With an ipad he can do a lot more. He'll be able to read and hear newspapers, magazines, etc. There are many games/apps that he can buy that can exercise his brain. They will speak to him! Some months ago there was a thread that went on and on about how nurses/family membes who were finding that their senior parents/patients (some with Alheimer's) became more alert when working with someone on the ipad. It was encouraging. IF he has netflix he can watch movies on it. Your music might be on your computers from cd's. If they have music cd's at home, you can quickly upload them to their computer, put them in itunes, and sync them to the ipad, too.
VoiceOver will help with so many other things that are explained in the link I gave you earlier.
Please also check out you tube videos for using VoiceOver in the ipad. The setting up and usage videos are very good and many examples are given by blind people. (Seeing how VoiceOver even reads the apps that might be on the front page as fingers glide over them is great.)
Also, I'm not sure where you live. Many libraries have free e-books with or without audio that your parents can take out. I learned last week from someone looking for the same, that if you're in Canada there is something called CNIB where people with vision problems can get all the e-books they want. You might want to google it and see where you can get free -ebooks for your parents. Audio books can be expensive. The thread below
Please go to the link above and then check out you tube.
I wish my 86 year old Mom (vision is good) would use an ipad.
I hope this helps. -
How to Delete unwanted Apps for ever?
Sometimes we download 'apps', which may turn out just duds or NOT as good and functional as we expect them to be. Then we decide to delete and though they are deleted from iPad ( 4th Gen) or iPhone, the same remain in the iTunes and show up at the time of synching under App section. The "Remove " option works only for deleting an app available on the device but not from iTunes ( computer) apps section. How can we Delete unwanted Apps for ever?
Sometimes I wonder why Steve infused so mauch control into such mundane issues as deleting undesirable stuff?It irritates to the extent sometimes I feel, whatever is said Windows based OS is much more user friendly and truly functional...kilpauk wrote:

Have you tried Control-Clicking on the offending app?
Followed by a click on Delete? -
Need phone for elderly parents
I have elderly parents who have fallen, and have the need for cell phones. Parkinson's is in play. I need a BASIC phone for each of them. Would like something VERY easy to use, big buttons, easy to read screen, and if possible voice dialing. Any suggestions?
If there is nothing at verizon you might try jitterbug. I don't know much about it except someone I met online has one an likes it. She is elderly and likes the big buttons. Mary

(fyi -- cmd field has index with not null constraint).What does these cost numbers mean? Do you know what it means and what measurement unit is used for these costs? Will a cost of 2000 be fine? 1500? What specific number will make you sit back and think that the cost is now acceptable?
Or instead, do you not think it is more important to rather look at what the query does and why.. and then determine if there are methods to do that better and faster?
So let's look at what the query does. It uses a a LIKE predicate. This means that if an index is available, it cannot be used to find a specific indexed value... as the query is not sure what the value is. All that the query knows is what the first couple of characters are for the value.
So how would an index be used? Have you looked at the execution plan? Do you understand why the CBO made the decision it did?
Now - how do you expect the CBO to find the relevant rows any faster? The index benefits the query how? As the CBO cannot put the index to any better use than what it is already doing, what other options are there? Can alternative indexing or data structures be considered? Can parallel processing be used?
These questions are intended to make you analyse the problem - and understand the problem. That is always the 1st step.. solving the problem only comes after this 1st step. -
How to reduce processing time for ResultSet getter methods
In my application, I have the following code.
query = .....;
ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery(query);
while (rs.next())
var_1 = rs.getString(1);
var_38 = rs.getString(38);
The query generates 35,000 rows. It is running slowly. I checked all the code, it turn out that this WHILE loop runs the slowest. Does anyone know how I can improve the performance for this issue?
Any advice or suggestion will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
aloe9451Now the slowest one is the while loop which get 38 columns.
We do have the requirement pulling 38 columns for 35,000 rows.The short answer: bandwidth isn't infinite.
The long answer:
35,000 rows by 38 columns, by 10 characters per column equals a little over 13 Mb, not counting protocol bytes. Adjust this upward if your fields are bigger, but I don't think you can adjust it downward very much because those protocol bytes are important.
Running FTP between my desktop computer and one of the servers here, I get a tad under 3 Mb/sec transfer rate. So, assuming that your network has similar speed, your 13 Mb of data will take no less than about 4 seconds.
However, FTP is an efficient protocol: it's just streaming bytes as fast as it can, and writing them to a file. Processing a result-set, on the other hand, is synchronous: even if you batch rows, the server still waits for the client, then sends some data, then waits for the client. THen there's the cost of client-side processing, which is going to be significant simply because you're doing close to 1 million method calls.
So yes, for your data size, 7 seconds is very reasonable. But no, for a web page, it's unreasonable ... but so is displaying all that data. -
How to reduce bandwidth required for spa9000 to spa941 link
Anyone can help me with this situation?
I have an spa400-spa9000-spa941 configuration over a satellite internet link. It works fine, during low traffic hours (night) but during the day the voice quality goes really bad (cutted voice, constant interruptions, etc).
We have already measured the bandwidth consumed by the spa941 to spa9000 link, and have found it at 80kbps upstream by 80 kbps downstream. We require to reduce it at least half of the actual values (40 kbps up by 40 kbps down).
We have already tried changing the codecs through the spa941 configuration menu: ( EXT1 –> Audio Configuration -> Preferred Codec -> G726-16 ), without success.
It seems that although we do that changes, the link between spa941 and spa9000 keeps working with the G711u codec.
We require that both calls coming in and out the spa9000 are compressed with a less bandwith consuming codec.
Which options do we need to change in the spa9000 and spa941 in order to make the G726-16 (or a less bandwidth consuming codec) the default codec between both equipments?
We are using firmware version 5.1.9 for spa9000 and version 5.1.8 for spa941.I have the following options selected in SPA9000 SIP configuration:
SDP Payload Types
-->RTP-Start-Loopback Codec: G726-16
Internal Music Source Parameters
-->Internal Music LBR Codec: G726-16
-->Internal Music Preferred Codec: Low Bit Rate
Auto Attendant Parameters
-->AA LBR Codec: G726-16
-->AA Preferred Codec: Low Bit Rate
... and the following options selected in SPA941 EXT1 configuration:
Audio Configuration
-->Preferred Codec: G726-16
-->Use Pref Codec Only: Yes
With this configuration when we try to dial from SPA941 to remote SPA9000 we get BUSY tone.
Any other thing we should check? -
Collaboration - how to reduce response time for Instant Messaging
Hello Experts,
I have enabled Collaboration link in the masthead of Ajax Framework Page by following the steps mentioned in the link Activating the Link for Launching the Collaboration Launch Pad.
I then activated services for real time collaboration in Ajax Framework Page referring to the link Activating Services for Real-Time Collaboration.
Following this I activated synchronous collaboration service types with the help of Activating Synchronous Collaboration Service Types.
In addition to the above steps I also followed this thread (Standard Services Instant Messaging Doesn't Work - Portal 7.3) and did the below changes in PCD Inspector:
# Browse into: portal_content -> every_user -> general -> frameworkpage
# Open com.sap.portal.toolAreaiView with option "PropEditor"
# Select the property: "EnableRtcSessionManager"
# Select the link "edit" Change the property value to "true"
On doing the above configurations I am able to open Collaboration Launchpad and send Instant Messages to users in my Contacts.
However what I have observed is that when I open an Instant Messaging window and type in some message and send it to a user, it takes between 70-90 seconds for the message to appear on the user's system, which is quite a long time considering it is an instant message. Is this normal behavior for instant messaging? Are there any other parameters/configurations that can be done to reduce this time taken for instant messages to get sent between users?
We are running NW 7.30 SP09 portal.

How can I reduce the selection for the characteristics value in a BW query
Good morning,
I need to find out how I can reduce the selection for the characteristics values in a BW query.
In a BW query I have a characteristic "Due month".
The characteristic values shown in the query are from 01.2001->03.2007. I would like to reduce it to the last 2 years,in the query view, without deleting the data for the other years in the cube.
Do you know how this can be done?
Thank you in advance for your feedback.
Kind regards,
Linda Verding
Staff Consultant - CSChi,
First thing you have to do is check the report how the data is being restricted only to those months.
1) one it can be variable in which the code is written for that to populate for last few years.
or else it must have been hardcoded for these months.
Go into your report and underneath the characteristicsCALMONTH there must be an variable or hardcoding.
You need to change this here in the report.
You dont have to delete anything there.

Hi all,
Long time ago, I manually created a Database (APGriMMRP) and 3 Tables (dbo.Table_1_XYcoordinates, dbo.Table_2_Soil, and dbo.Table_3_Water) in my SQL Server 2012 Management Studio (SSMS2012). The dbo.Table_1_XYcoordinates has the following columns: file_id,
Pt_ID, X, Y, Z, sample_id, Boring. The dbo.Table_2_Soil has the following columns: Boring, sample_date, sample_id, Unit, Arsenic, Chromium, Lead. The dbo.Table_3_Water has the following columns: Boring, sample_date, sample_id, Unit, Benzene, Ethylbenzene,
Pyrene. The dbo.Table_1_XYcoordinates is a Parent Table. The dbo.Table_2_Soil and the dbo.Table_3_Water are 2 Child Tables. The sample_id is key link for the relationship between the Parent Table and the Child Tables.
Problem #1) How can I print out or export these 3 dbo Tables?
Problem #2) If I right-click on the dbo Table, I see "Start PowerShell" and click on it. I get the following error messages: Warning: Failed to load the 'SQLAS' extension: An exception occurred in SMO while trying to manage a service.
--> Failed to retrieve data for this request. --> Invalid class. Warning: Could not obtain SQL Server Service information. An attemp to connect to WMI on 'NAB-WK-02657306' failed with the following error: An exception occurred in SMO while trying
to manage a service. --> Failed to retrieve data for this request. --> Invalid class. .... PS SQLSERVER:\SQL\NAB-WK-02657306\SQLEXPRESS\Databases\APGriMMRP\Table_1_XYcoordinates> What causes this set of error messages? How can
I get this problem fixed in my PC that is an end user of the Windows 7 LAN System? Note: I don't have the regular version of Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 in my PC. I just have the Microsoft 2012 Shell (Integrated) program in my PC.
Problem #3: I plan to create an XML Schema Collection in the "APGriMMRP" database for the Parent Table and the Child Tables. How can I handle the relationship between the Parent Table and the Child Table in the XML Schema Collection?
Problem #4: I plan to extract some results/data from the Parent Table and the Child Table by using XQuery. What kind of JOIN (Left or Right JOIN) should I use in the XQuerying?
Please kindly help, answer my questions, and advise me how to resolve these 4 problems.
Thanks in advance,
Scott ChangIn the future, I would recommend you to post your questions one by one, and to the appropriate forum. Of your questions it is really only #3 that fits into this forum. (And that is the one I will not answer, because I have worked very little with XSD.)
1) Not sure what you mean with "print" or "export", but when you right-click a database, you can select Tasks from the context menu and in this submenu you find "Export data".
2) I don't know why you get that error, but any particular reason you want to run PowerShell?
4) If you have tables, you query them with SQL, not XQuery. XQuery is when you query XML documents, but left and right joins are SQL things. There are no joins in XQuery.
As for left/right join, notice that these two are equivalent:
SELECT ...
FROM a LEFT JOIN b ON a.col = b.col
SELECT ...
FROM b RIGHT JOIN a ON a.col = b.col
But please never use RIGHT JOIN - it gives me a headache!
There is nothing that says that you should use any of the other. In fact, if you are returning rows from parent and child, I would expect an inner join, unless you want to cater for parents without children.
Here is an example where you can study the different join types and how they behave:
CREATE TABLE apple (a int NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY,
b varchar(23) NOT NULL)
INSERT apple(a, b)
VALUES(1, 'Granny Smith'),
(2, 'Gloster'),
(4, 'Ingrid-Marie'),
(5, 'Milenga')
CREATE TABLE orange(c int NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY,
d varchar(23) NOT NULL)
INSERT orange(c, d)
VALUES(1, 'Agent'),
(3, 'Netherlands'),
(4, 'Revolution')
SELECT a, b, c, d
FROM apple
CROSS JOIN orange
SELECT a, b, c, d
FROM apple
INNER JOIN orange ON apple.a = orange.c
SELECT a, b, c, d
FROM apple
LEFT OUTER JOIN orange ON apple.a = orange.c
SELECT a, b, c, d
FROM apple
RIGHT OUTER JOIN orange ON apple.a = orange.c
SELECT a, b, c, d
FROM apple
FULL OUTER JOIN orange ON apple.a = orange.c
go
DROP TABLE apple, orange

Web report for opening it takes long time how to reduce the time?
HI Experts,
I created report using webi. For next time while opening it takes more time. How to reduce the time.Hi Manikandan,
There could be multiple reason behind the bad performance.
1. Are you using supported JVM version to run Webi reports?
2. Do the reports contain prompts? Are the LOVs set to "Automatic refresh before use"? If yes, uncheck it.
3. How many queries do the report has? Can you run the queries one by one and check which query is taking much time?
4. If it based on relational database, copy and run it against the database directly and check how much time it takes. If more, you may have to fix the issue at database level like using temporary tables, indices, etc.
5. Also check if there are firewalls or proxy server between client and server communication. if yes, try to refresh the report directly on BO server and check.
6. Check if there is any hinderance between BO server and Database server communcation.
Hope it will help.

How to reduce the coulmns width for Timesheet in ESS ?
Hi,
In ESS Timesheet, how to reduce the columns width for professional self service?
It is looking fine for weekdays, but when the user is assigned as professional self service at back end, few more sales order columns are added dynamically to timesheet for professional self service user. Now these extra coulmns are jumbled and also wide.
I tried the OSS notes 989453 in 'listviewerslim.java' , but it doesn't work. Is there any other alternative work around for this. Do I need to work at backend to solve this, If so, please let me know the work around.
Points will be awarded.
