How to relocate desktop folder?

my ssd is small but i like keeping lots of files on my desktop. I want to have my desktop on my hdd, but still SEE it as my desktop. i do not want to move my entire home folder to the hdd, it's just the Desktop folder in my Home folder that I want moved - how do i do that? couldn't find anything searching.
thank you

How is this a mess?
If you have a lot of files on your desktop and replace them with alias' the only visual difference will be alias arrow.
Doubtful this will work, but take a look at: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1153868

  • How to relocate Home folder to second internal drive

What is the process to migrate my Home Folder from the boot drive (256Gb SSD) to a new internal drive (960Gb SSD)? Can this be accomplished in finder or should one use the Terminal window?

Interesting, I'm having the same issue on my MacBook Pro that has both an SSD (for the OS and Apps) and a Hard Disk in place of the Superdrive. This config worked just fine with Mountain Lion; since upgrading to Mavericks this morning, I am unable to log into my personal account that has its home folder on the hard disk.
Unfortunately, it also seems to be an issue with the library folder, as I've been able to solve this issue with symlinks just fine with the exception of Library: the system keeps asking me to key in my password because the Library folder "needs to be repaired".
I can't move my Library folder to the SSD, as it is way too big (for whatever reason) - the SSD is only 96 Gig.
What is so different here is that the hard disk in the system is encrypted - I think this is the problem. I don't understand why, though, because under ML, I just logged in as admin after every reboot, which mounted the encrypted disk and then logged out / logged back in with my user account - it worked just fine.
Something seems to have changed with Mavericks regarding making available the encrypted HD...
Oddly enough, on my Mac Mini at home, which also has the SSD/HD pair, the moved home folder works fine - of course, here the HD isn't encrypted...
I hope someone has a fix for this, otherwise I'll have to go back to ML!

How do I change Mac desktop folder/safari pictures to registered business icons? I have tried almost everythin but none are working.  First how do I capture the business icon from the website, then what?

OK, well to start with, you must have the icon file in the correct format. You need to end up with an .icns file. One of the how-to articles should tell you how to do this - iConvert will also do it.
If it is in the correct format, when you click the icon file to highlight it, and click cmd-i, you will see the Get Info window - at the top left, you should see a mini version of the icon. If you do NOT see that icon correctly, the file is not the correct format. So this will not work for a jpg or png file, for example.
Once you have this window open, go to the thumbnail, click it to highlight it blue, and click cmd-C to copy.
Go to your Safari app from the Applications folder (not from the dock), again click cmd-i to open its Get Info window, and again click its icon to highlight it blue. Now click cmd-V to paste. You will be asked for your admin password to authenticate. The icon should now become the one you've pasted in.
You may need to log out and back in for the effect to show on the application file itself.
You might also want to look into Candybar if you plan on doing a lot of icon customization.

Change the folder properties and try again, or try saving in a different location". How do I change desktop folder properties?
mac book pro Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Control-click or right-click anywhere on your desktop picture, and select Get Info from the contextual menu. Then expand the Ownership & Permissions section. You need to set the drop-down menus like this:
    You can: Read and Write
    Owner: <your username>
    Access: Read & Write
    Group: Staff
    Access: No Access
    Others: No Access
If that doesn't work, log in as an administrator, open Terminal, and enter these commands (assuming your username is "bigalive"; change appropriately:
    sudo chown bigalive:staff /Users/bigalive/Desktop
    sudo chmod 700 /Users/bigalive/Desktop
    That should fix it.

  • My iweb would not publish. I made a desktop folder. How do I publish the folder to iweb on mobleme?

My iweb would not publish, I made a desktop folder for my iweb pages. Now how do I publish that to mobile me?

When you have iWeb open, in the navigation column at left, click first on the NAME of your site that you wish to publish -- when you do this, you should have the Site Publishing Settings show up in the main window at right.
Next, from the popup choices next to "Publish to:" select MobileMe.
If this is the first time you are doing this, you will need to type in your MobileMe account (name or email address), and make sure the proper email contact address is input, too.
If your site will be public, you'll all set; if you need to apply privacy settings, you do so here, too.
Now, click on the "Publish Site" button/icon at bottom in the toolbar, or select the same command from the menu bar in iWeb, under File. For the first time, you should choose "Publish Entire Site" (and be patient, it will take a while). Later, when you make changes, use the "Publish Site Changes" (much faster).
When your site is published, iWeb will present you with a sheet window with options to immediate View your site online in your browser, announce it to others (via Mail), or just hit "OK."
    Gooooooooo iWeb!

  • Updated to Maverick, had a desktop folder for pictures I had transferred from my PC. That folder is gone, no icons in Pictures in Finder but the photos are still in images in All My Files! How do I get the organized folder back?

I had transferred all my photo files from my PC when I got my Mac Air. They were in a desktop folder all nicely organized in files (event, dates, etc.) That desktop folder is now gone after the Maverick update. When I click on Pictures in finder it comes up empty (not even a link to Iphoto)  I had not put these pictures in iphoto yet. Before Mavericks when I clicked on Pictures the Iphoto icon and my folder showed up. My Iphoto itself is working fine and and those pictures are still intact. I know the pictures are on my Mac because they are all in Images, but they are no longer organized and are no longer in sequence. I would like to know if I my "intact" folder may still be somewhere on my computer. If not what is the best and most efficient way to get those photos from the images only file to Iphoto?

I actually just noticed the "media" option is no longer listed along the left side of Finder. I think that is where I accessed iphoto and my other picture folder.
There is no media option in the Finder. That only turns up in Open... Dialogues like this:

  • I can't find my Desktop folder on any of my TM backups

    Hi everyone,
This is my first forum post, and I'm downright desperate.
I have migrated from my old MBP to a brand new one this weekend, and used Time Machine in an external HD to move my data. I had TM set up since February, with no options/exceptions.
As far as I can tell, everything migrated to the new computer perfectly (applications, preferences, documents, music, cookies, etc) except there is nothing on my Desktop after migration. It just so happens that I have (had?) a folder in my Desktop with all my graduate school work.
I have already looked in TM in all the backups since February, and there is no Desktop folder in my user account folder in any of them. Does this mean that TM has never backed up my Desktop from the beginning???
(BTW, I'm also having trouble to simply search for specific files when I look into the TM backup folder in my external HD. Whenever I use Spotlight, it only finds stuff on other folders in that external HD, but it doesn't return any hits from the TM backup folder, even when I look for files that I can see there just by browsing. How can I solve this?)
If it's true that TM never backed up my Desktop, my problem is then getting to my Desktop in the old computer. Trouble is, I had Leopard reinstalled at the Apple Store when I bought the new computer, since the system was supposedly backed up. As far as I know, the old computer was wiped clean and Leopard reinstalled in about 20 minutes by a Genius.
I have been told by them after the fact to use Data Rescue II to try and scour the old computer's internal drive by booting it up in target mode, but I haven't attempted it yet. I was told that if the Leopard reinstall was done in a specific way, I would be able to get to the old files with Data Rescue II still with their names and folder structures if they haven't been overwritten. However, if it was done 'another way', I would have lost the folders and any recovered files would be restored to a new location under a generic name like 'recover000001'. I'm afraid that in this case I will be overwhelmed by all the files in my old system (even if DRII supposedly recognizes file types), and I won't be able to sort through all of them to get at my important work.
Does anyone know what is the best way to get my data back???? It will be two years of work down the drain if I can't access the contents of that folder on my old Desktop.
Thanks so much for any advice!

    yes, that's what it means.
I don't understand. Why would it be that TM did not backup my Desktop? The Geniuses were not able to answer this question. I'm completely sure I didn't mark any exceptions when I set it up in February, and I've read other people also had similar problems with some of their folders and/or files (there's another thread where another user lost his Downloads folder; I accidentally replied to it instead of creating this new topic -- my apologies).

you have to use spotlight from TM interface, not directly from finder. start TM, scroll to a backup and use the search field to start a search.
That worked great; thanks. Is there a way to search across different backup dates in one go, or do I have to keep clicking back through time with the same search string?

    I don't understand why
you did that. did you have some problems with your old computer?
I didn't have any problems with the old computer. I was actually giving it to my mother for Mothers Day as her first Mac, and I wanted to make sure she would have as 'brand new' Mac experience as I could provide her.

this is your one and only hope of getting anything back if you did an erase and install. if you did an archive and install then old your old data will be in the "previous systems" folder at the top level of the hard drive.

Thanks. You reckon professional data recovery services would come up with more stuff (especially filenames and folder structures) than I would be able to, if I tried using DR myself? I'm terrified of going through my whole HD and sorting out the hundreds of thousands of files that weren't in the desktop in the first place.
I appreciate your help, V.K.; I still cannot get over the fact that TM can be so unreliable. What could have caused this catastrophe on my computer and in other users? They were lucky that they still had their data when they noticed TM wasn't backing it up, and the solutions were bone-chillingly similar to Windows voodoo tricks (e.g. delete the old TM plist, hard reboot, pray, and see if it works now). If this is the case, I can't see any options other than doing full manual backups periodically, but that defeats the TM purpose in the first place. Any thoughts or ideas?
    Thanks!

  • Indesign cs6 freezes/crashes on Windows 7 64 bit selecting desktop folder

    Dear All,
I'm experiencing a very strange behaviour of Indesign CS6 who freezes/closes in specific situations connected with desktop folder.
I try to explain the issue:
I got a brand new PC with Xeon CPU E3-1246 3.5 GHZ, 8 GB RAM, Windows 7 64bit and Clean installation of Indesign CS6.
Indesign works great and fast, but everytime I try to open a file (from file ---> open) and select the desktop folder the program stop thinking for 1 second than closes down without crashing, without errors without anything.
Same thing happens when I try to insert a picture in a frame selecting it from the desktop folder (only this folder, all the others work perfectly).
I couldn't find anything useful on the internet to solve this kind of problem.

  • How to create a folder with date each day?

I've not used Automator, just once to "create" a workflow to create a new folder with a name; but what I want is this:
Each morning at 12:01 am, a new folder to be created with the correct date as the name of the folder.
So for tomorrow, Sunday 23 Nov 2008 at 12:01, I'd suddenly have a folder on my Hard Drive that would have the date like 23 Nov 2008 or 11/23/2008 or 23-11-2008 or similar.
Then at the end of a week I'd have 7 of these; - but I can manually trash them-- I want to create these on my HD since I backup via SuperDuper! each morning (automatically) at 3:35 am (incremental backup to an external La Cie HD) and I want to know if was done, so by having a folder with the date on it I can open the external HD and if I see that that folder with the recent date is there, then I'm confident the BackUp was run.
I have been able to create a workflow to create a folder in Automator, but not sure how to:
    1. Have the folder created automatically each day at 12:01
    2. How to have the folder label be the date
Thanks for any comments or certainly any other work-around or other way to do this or similar.
    Regards, Steve

Open the AppleScript Editor. Copy the following into it:
set dt to date string of (current date)
set mth to word 2 of dt
set dy to word 3 of dt
set yr to word 4 of dt
    set dtt to mth & " " & dy & " " & yr
    tell application "Finder"
    make new folder at alias "Macintosh HD:Users:username:Desktop:" with properties {name:dtt}
    end tell
Amend the path with your Hard Disk name and username. Save as an application to anywhere suitable.
In iCal, set up an event with a daily repeat and an alarm at the time you want it: under 'Alarm' choose 'Open file': then in the next menu which will appear change from 'iCal' to 'Other' and navigate to your script. Enter the date and time.
Your folder will be created as required: iCal does not need to be running. This script gives the folder name as, for example, 'November 22 2008', but it's easy to amend the script if you want something a bit different - for example:
    property zro : ""
set yr to year of (current date) as string
set dy to day of (current date)
set mt to month of (current date)
set dyy to dy as string
set nmm to the number of items in dyy
    if nmm is 1 then
    set zro to 0
    end if
    if mt is January then
    set mth to "01"
else if mt is February then
    set mth to "02"
else if mt is March then
    set mth to "03"
else if mt is April then
    set mth to "04"
else if mt is May then
    set mth to "05"
else if mt is June then
    set mth to "06"
else if mt is July then
    set mth to "07"
else if mt is August then
    set mth to "08"
else if mt is September then
    set mth to "09"
else if mt is October then
    set mth to "10"
else if mt is November then
    set mth to "11"
else if mt is December then
    set mth to "12"
    end if
    set dtt to mth & "-" & zro & dy & "-" & yr as string
    tell application "Finder"
    make new folder at alias "iBook HD:Users:roger:Desktop:" with properties {name:dtt}
    end tell
This gives the folder name as, for example, 11-22-2008. (The days will have leading zeros, if you don't want these just remove the references to 'zro'.)

You need to find a third-party utility that does that. You should find one at macupdate.com or at the App Store. In order to use OS X you would need to create an encrypted disc image using Disk Utility, then store your folder in the disc image. That way only you can mount the disc image and access the data.

  • How to get html folder info into iWeb

Just made upgrade from 10.6 to 10.8. During some problems with that had to back up HD with dmg file on a separate HD. The only place I can find my old old iweb site is in a desktop folder on the dmg and I need to put it into the new iweb 09. There are html files for each page for the website in the folder. I can't open the old website and don't see anything in there is nothing in the iweb folder in the old library.
If this makes sense can anyone give some help?

To the uninitiated it doesn't make sense. That's why a command of language is so important. It allows you to convey a message others might understand.
So lets try to decipher the message.
iWeb uses the domain.sites2 file to store its assets.
    The file is in :
    ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/
where ~ is the Home directory.
If you made a backup of your Home directory, the file in in a similar location on the .dmg.
If you didn't wipe the Harddisk when installing 10.8 the file is still in its original location.
    So have a look there.
To make life easy, use iWebSites . It shows the default location with the file.
    iWebSites
You can alway drag the file from the .dmg on top of the window. Then you have two domain files.
    Try it.
On the page is an instruction how to see the hidden Library folder in the Home directory.
This is discussed from the moment Lion/Mountain Lion was introduced. Others will provide you with those answers.
