How to Remove Default Application

Can anyone tell me how to remove a default application that opens a certain file? I'd like OS X to prompt me to choose which application to use each time a certain new file is opened. It seems once you've set a default application it does not allow you to revert to the old setting. Is there a way to do this? Thanks!

There doesn't seem to be a way to set "none" as the default application. OS X works very hard to assign an app to every file it can, but sometimes, as Jim has discovered, it gets it wrong. This seems to be most often because apps tell the OS what they can open & some older ones don't do it quite right, causing OS X to guess about some file types & incorrectly assigning them to the app.
Fixing this would be tricky. Individual files don't tell the OS what app to use unless you change the opening app for that file alone. If you use "Change All" that info is removed from the file (if it was there) & instead recorded in a preference file. But generally, the defaults are stored in the Launch Services database, which the OS maintains automatically.
It is possible to get the OS to rebuild that database, but doing so just fixes any corruption by once again checking the apps, so the same wrong guesses come back to bug you.

How to remove an application?

I have installed "Dragster" from downloads and later on decied to remove this application, went finder > applications and select its icon then pressed Command and backspace to get rid of it.
but this application make a menu in your right click or better say ALT click menu.
so when ever I right click or alt click on any file I get an extra menu under the "More" option which says "Dragster"...
Could you plase advice me how to remove this application fully?

PS: I switch to Apple from MS since October.

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, enter ~/Library/Contextual Menu Items/ as the folder's path, and delete any related content from that folder; if there's nothing relevant there, do it again but omit the ~ at the beginning of the path.

I know you can change the application that opens a file in the file;s info window (command i) and then double clicking the file opens it in that application. However the context menu still shows the same original default application. How to change what is shown as default in context menu?

You can't. You can change the default app in Get Info which will change the first listed app in the context menu to that default app. How the context menu is built is not under user control.

How to remove default facebook email on login scre...

I am using the latest version of Skype.
When I start Skype, the main Skype login screen show up. At the bottom right corner, there is a link to Sign in with facebook, After the link is clicked, then a facebook logon screen will showup. I did logon using facebook once and logout but my facebook id becomes the default on that field.
My question is how to remove the default email/facebook ID on that screen. I did not login in to Skype, not on facebook. I have tried uninstall Skype and delete all the file in %appdata%skype directory. I did try to blank out the field and close Skype. It doesn't work.
However none of the method works. When I go to the facebook logon screen in Skype, the default facebook ID still show up(I used that ID logon once but have already logout).
I have already removed the my Skype/facebook account association already but the facebook address still showup as default.
Any idea to clear that default?

Will this terminal command work in OS X 10.10?

How to remove Java Applications from "Add and Remove Programs" list?

I have deployed my Java applications (both JWS and Applet) via JNLP with allow-offline option enabled and without installer-desc option specified.
My questions are:
1. An entry is added to the Add and Remove Programs list after launching the application via JNLP. Is it due to the specification of JNLP or JWS? Is there anyway to prevent this behavior?
2. I removed my application by clearing the cache via Java Control Panel but the entry for the application is still listed in Add and Remove Programs. How can I remove the entry in the Add and Remove Programs?
I have tried following methods but neither works:
1.Go to Add and Remove Programs, and click [remove] button to the right of my application.
*Warning message like 'Application cannot be uninstalled completely' is thrown.
2.Follow instructions listed @ [Microsoft Online Support site|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314481/en-us] to remove my application manually via Windows registry.
*Couldn't find appropriate registry entry to delete.

Acrobat Pro 11 - How to suppress default application pop-up

We've got the Creative Cloud desktop apps license, so I used the creative cloud packager to build an Acrobat Pro Package. I just deployed the pkg to a test Mac OS X system with no problems. Since this is for a school computer lab environment I need to suppress the pop-up box that says "Adobe Acrobat Pro is not the currently configured to be the default application for PDF Files. Would you like to make PDF files open with Adobe Acrobat Pro instead of Preview?" (See below). I do not want to change the default application, and most importantly I do not want users presented with this pop-up. I combed through the com.adobe.Acrobat.Pro.plist file in ~/Library/Preferences and nothing's jumping out at me. I've read through a lot of the documentation on this site and can't seem to find a list of all of the keys, sorry if I'm missing something obvious, and thank you for any help.

That is an OS setting not an application setting. There are utilities that can help you do this but you probably will need to write a she'll script to do it. This link might help explain what needs to happen but you will need to create/write the script on your own.

How to remove default Apply, OK and Cancel buttons in portlet edit mode.

Iam facing problem in customizing default edit mode of portlet, my question is how to remove those default buttons and how to implement our own links for SAVE and CANCEL functionality. Because if we implement our own <form> in edit JSP page then default form will override our own <form> and default buttons works rather then our own forms.

Ah, this one is easy, if im not mistaken, set this tag in your provider.xml

Defines whether RenderManager should automatically render the portlet's container (border and title) in "Edit" and "EditDefaults" modes before and after processing/invoking the page.
This however means you have to write your own renderer for the customize page. Then you can add your own code for the buttons and the events behind them.
I created my own derived container and added this line to my provider.xml
<containerRenderer class="nl.rsm.eventCalendar.myContainerRenderer"/>
This is however for rendering the showmode of the servlet, dont know if this is the same
render class for the editmode.
Do you realy need custom save functionality, Oracle also has something called DBPreferenceStore, you can store self defined attributes into the database. Perhaps this is sufficiant enough.

How to change default application associated with some mime types?

When we install some new program, for example GIMP, I assume the newly installed program is added to some mime type database, and the /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache file is automatically generated.
Using my example, GIMP will be the default application for all its registered mime types, even application/pdf. I surely don't want this to happen, and I surely don't want to create all kinds of files that GIMP registered and right click on them and choose Properties and then change it in the Open with... tab. I want to systematically de-prioritize GIMP so that it will not override my previously assigned default applications.
I wrote a script to modify the mimeinfo.cache file, and it seems to work great. However, after a reboot or upgrade or something I didn't notice, the default application of application/pdf is reconfigured to GIMP. I think the cache suffix of the file indicates that it is just a cache and may be changed by system unnoticed. So I am looking for a new way to change the default applications.
As far as I know or guess from the phenomena, there should be some system utility that generates the mimeinfo.cache file, it seems to parse all the *.desktop files under /usr/share/applications and register them to certain mime types accordingly. The sequence of the *.desktop files get parsed seems to be related to the time the application is installed, and the newly installed applications seems to be parsed later and inserted in the front of the application list or be parsed earlier and appended to the application list. Is there some place I can change the sequence of the parsing? Or is there some place I can change the behavior of the system utility?
I know that I can populate my ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list to override the system wide defaults, however, I want a more elegant way to this.
Any opinion on this is welcomed.

Ah, right. Don't know what DE you are on, but in Gnome: right-click a (e.g. pdf) file -> Preferences -> Open with.
All Applications listed there will be available from the right click menu, the marked one will be used on double-click.

I guess what I am trying to propose is this: "de-prioritize" GIMP in its .dekstop file for the types you dont want it to be associated with, and manually add it back in through "Open With" for the file types you want it to be an option. Not sure if this is solving anything for you though

Following problem :
I need to remove default value from table.
Example
CREATE TABLE MY_TABLE(
NAME VARCHAR2(50) DEFAULT 'NAME',
AGE NUMBER DEFAULT 0
Now even when I use MODIFY like
ALTER TABLE MY_TABLE MODIFY (NAME VARCHAR2(10) );
The default is still there:
SELECT DATA_DEFAULT FROM USER_TAB_COLUMNS WHERE TABLE_NAME = 'MY_TABLE';
Is there any way?

If a column has a default value, then you can use the DEFAULT clause to change the default to NULL, but you cannot remove the default value completely. That is, if a column has ever had a default value assigned to it, then the DATA_DEFAULT column of the USER_TAB_COLUMNS data dictionary view will always display either a default value or NULL

we are using crystal report server XI . in one report i have added Date time Range fields. with that, "include this value" and "no upper value" checkboxes are added defaultly. i just want to remove those checkboxes which added defaultly in the report filter form.

it is working. but, it is not the answer which i expected.
let me explain my scenario first. we have added two date filters in report,that should have date selection with start range and end range, so, it is like two separate fileds which is titled has date start range and date end range. but, with that we are getting "include this value" and no upper value" checkboxes.
actually we dont want those checkboxes but we want start range and end range. if i select "allow range value" is false, startrange and endrange is not coming. what to do? how to solution?
also, can u explain me what is the meaning of "include this value,no lower value and no upper value". please.

How to remove AppStore application from autorun after login in to system?

I installed Yosemite (on clean disk) and now after login in to the system, it every time ask me about my credentials to AppStore and run Appstore application when I do enter apple login. What should I do for remove it from autorun?
P.S. I do not see AppStore application in System Setting -> Users & Groups -> Login items.

I want to be able to view different users' Expenses workflow from the responsibility "Workflow Administrator Web (New)", however, the "workflow owned by" is defaulted to be the person who login.

Hi,
The owner of the workflow process will be the person who started it. The WF_ENGINE.SetItemOwner API is used to set this, or it is defined in the creation process automatically.
If you want to access workflows which are not owned by you, then you need to log in as a user who has been assigned the responsibility which is configured to be the Workflow Administrator. The default value for this is SYSADMIN, but it may have been changed in your system - have a look at the Administration tab from the Workflow pages, and it will show you what responsibility / which user is configured as the workflow administrator. Only they can access workflows which do not belong to them.
