How to resize layer in percentage relative to image size?

Hi,
Say I have an image that is 100x100 pixles. And I want to take one of the layers and resize it to 50% of the image size, so that it is 50 pixles. How can I accomplish that?
The reason I ask, is that have multiple images all with different size. But I have a signature (ie. watermark) that is always the same size. I want to be able to place this signature, and then resize it to XX% of the image it was placed on. That way, it should always have the same proportions.
Thanks in advance!

You can scale by percentage of the original layer size going to Edit > Transform > Scale. In the transform options menu, there is an option to scale by percentage - just make sure that you click on the link icon between the Height and Width fields to maintain the aspect ratio of your layer.
However, if you wanted to scale a layer relative to the canvas size, I think you would need to do some scripting or use actions... you might want to ask around on the Photoshop General Discussion or Photoshop Scripting forums to see if anyone has a solution.

  • Scale a layer so it matches the image size. (Automate)

I need to scale a layer so it matches the image size.
The problem is that i need to automate this procedure and apply on a range of images all with different resolutions. (This is why i can't use CTRL+T and just drag the corners of the layer so it fits the image)
The layer that i need to resize is 2000x1500 pixels.
The images that i need the layer to match varies between 3000x2000 pixels and 5000x4000 pixels. (I know all about quality loss when i scale UP so please don't give me a lecture this).
It doesn't matter if the layer proportions changes.
    I use Photoshop CS5.

You state layer but do not state much more. Do you know how many layers these files will have. Will it always be the same layer in the layer stack that needs to be transformed. You state that it doesn't matter if the layer proportions changes by that do you mean you don't care if the layers aspect ration changes and its content becomes very distorted. Layer also supports transparency they need not be a rectangle transforming these layers will not fill in the transparent area or make the rectangular.
You may be able to automate this with a script.  Install the ScriptListener and perform the transformation you want to do is steps. Use Ctrl-T set the anchor point to the top left corner and move the layers top left corner to the canvas's top left corner by entering 0 in the x and y fields . Then do a Menu Image size just to get the width and hight of the canvas in pixels and to make sure that the transform is written to Photoshop's script files. Then do a Ctrl-T again with the anchor point top left set the w and h fields to the width and height pixel sizes of the canvas.  Also record these steps i an action so you can see how Photoshop does the transforms.  You will see Photoshop records the steps and the value he used for the move to Top Left corner were calculated from the Layer original location.  You would need to make this same calculation in the script. Un install the plug-in and extract the transforms steps from the Photoshop script files you may now have the information you need to do the transforms you will still have to learn Photoshop scripting to learn how to get document canvas sizes and layer sizes and process the layers. Not an easy task.....

  • Canvas size relative to Image size

I'm using Photoshop Elements 5.0. Windows XP. First post to this forum.
I'm trying to add a frame in artwork. When I add the frame, is the image resizing or the canvas resizing? In former post: http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3c05a367 they suggest to crop the image. However, when I do that, I'm resizing my image. How do I add a border without losing resolution or making my image smaller?

    Glenda,
Glad that it helps with your project.
There are 2 concepts involved, as I see it.
    1. One can established a permanent resolution via Image>resize>image size.
Let us assume that you open a picture file from your camera with
    width=31.778 inches
    height=23.7787 inches
resolution=72/px/in. Note that this metric is in inches, not pixels, for this drill.
now change resolution to 325px/in. Then
    height=7.04 inches
    width=5.268 inches
The absolute values may be different for your files, but the principle is the same: as the pixels count goes up, the picture size, in inches, goes down - inverse relation. Try it out in your program.
    2. The frames take up real estate, if you will. If you buy a frame for a picture, the outside dimensions of the framed picture will be larger that the paper picture inside. One can make the picture smaller in elements, compensating just enough for the real estate consumed by the frame, but that, to me, would become a nuisance.
Unless there is important information at the edges of the picture (e.g.a sign), it is my experience that application of the frame is not deleterious. Note that in the layers palette there is an f icon in a circle. Double click this to adjust the bevel. Layer>layer styles>scale effects is an option which is quite handy.

  • Relation between image size, resolution and pixels

I would like to increase the size of image by using PSE9.
    For sample existing image had: width (W) 6.073", height (H) 7.683", resolution 300, pixels W 1822, H 2305.
A situation) when I changed the image to W 8, H10 and click on RESAMPLE the resolution on changed but number of pixels increase to W 2400  and
       H 3036
B situation) Image size W 8, H 10 and NO ACTIVATED RESAMPLE. Now resolution reduced to 227 and number of pixel NO CHANGED from original
       W 1822, H 2305
In my understanding if image blow up the number of pixels will be same as original and only the distance between pixels will be increase. So, resolution should
    be dropped.
Now the question: How in sample A increase number of pixels? From where they come?
    More realistic looks sample B.
Now other way: I used crop - make original image smaller. So, the number of pixels should degrees and resolution NO CHANGED. But PSE 9 shown number of pixels same and resolution increased.
    Is it right?
What is wrong or right in above explanation?
Can visible find the difference between samples A & B on computers monitor? I tried blow up sample B by 10 times and still no differences on screen,It is because resolution of monitor to low?

    A. Resample means elements adds pixels to the existng pixels to increase image size
and\or resolution and subtracts pixels to downsize. Usually resampling to make an image
smaller is okay, but resampling to make an image bigger can result in loss of quality.
Of course that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it, just something to keep in mind.
    B. Leaving the resample box unchecked, elements only changes resolution (print size)
and doesn't change the actual number of pixels (harm the image) so the image will
be and look the same on your monitor.
Usually a resampled image will be of lower quality than a non resampled image because
elements has to make pixels to upsize and subtract pixels to downsize.
Elements uses the resampling method choosen in the image size dialog to determine how,
with one of the bicubic choices being the best for photos.
Elements, as far as i know, uses the standard bicubic mehod for the resampling with the crop tool.

Try this. Finder->New Finder Window, set it up the way you want it, CMD+J, and select Use as Defaults. Close the window and create another. Did it use those settings? If so, you're finished. If not, I don't have anything else for you to try.

I tried the command of ColorSampler/ColorSamplers.

So, the script run sampling for 2000x1000 pixels image , then it hangs for five minutes over.

  • How can I descreen and scale the target image size with a HP 8600 n911 premium?

I recently purchased an new HP 8600 n911 premium all-in-one, HP's top of the line all in one inkjet printer/scanner.  I cannot find any settings that permit me to descreen an image (such as one in a newspaper) or to adjust the size of the target image.  Is there additional software that will permit me to do this or am I missing something in the software provided by HP?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

You would need software form a third party to have this option.  The free software that comes with the 8600 doesn't have an option for that. Vuescan is the only software I could find that says it works with your pritner and has a descreen option.  You have to purchase it, but it will give you more advanced options than the software that came with the printer.

  • Why does rotating a layer cause image size to increase?

I was working on the top layer of a PSD document and did a custom rotation of 45 degrees so I could get a better painting angle.  When I rotated the layer back I noticed my image size had increased from 10 x 8 inches to 18.3 x 18.3.  When I tried to resize the image back to 10 x 8 it made my image fat and squatty.  Any ideas what I did wrong when rotating?  I just wanted a better wrist angle for stroking lines...

This is an example of using Image>Resize>Reveal All.
If you rotate a layer, using free transform or Image>Rotate>Free Rotate Layer,
then setect the move tool, you should see a bounding box well outside the original image.
This is the part of the photo you can't see after rotating the layer.
If you then were to go to Image>Image Size>Reveal All, elements makes those areas visible.
The only thing about rotating images or layers at angles other than 90 degree increments,
is that might degrade the image some.

  • Editing XMP data related to image files.

    Dear members:
While working on organizing my photo library I have encountered a problem.
How can the XMP data file related to image files be edited in a way that the file info panel can see these changes ?
I made a mistake while saving the current filename as part of my file renaming scheme and need to have the XMP data edited so that it reflects the right (original) filename. I tried using the Mac's TextEdit application but it doesn't seem to have worked properly. Although the file was edited and then re-saved when I use the file info command to look at the data the old filename still appears under the raw data tab instead of the new, revised one.
What is the best way to edit this information ?
Any help will be appreciated as this is a semi-urgent matter.
    Thank you in advance,
    Joseph

So I was missing something. Thank you Hal.
I had not realised that XMP goes inside of actual image files with those file types. Obviously my new backup routine spotted that, as I was on backuping only modified/new files.
I would much prefer that also with above mentioned file types XMP-data would be stored in sidecar files instead of modifying the original file. To support this there are two arguments that I think are valid:
    1) modification of the file is always risky (and spesifically, with image originals I prefer to avoid that),
    2) modification leads to the fact that "smarter" backup strategies relying on "full backup" supported with differential or incremental backups lead to unnecessary long backuptimes and media consumption.
That said, I prefer to have XMP-data also outside of the catalog so that other tools can also utilise it  (further, in addition to the catalog with sidecars I have sort of failover approach, and some of you may now say "belt and syspenders" after mentioning backups...).
Is there a way to have all file types to utilise sidecars rather that modifying original file?

    Hello Michael.
Hopefully this support article is what you need:
    https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+will+not+start
In any case, it's possible that you are having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not caused by one (or more than one) of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] (don't forget to select ''Disable all add-ons'' when you start safe mode). If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and themes and [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+plugins this one] for plugins.
If you need support for one of your add-ons, you'll have to contact its author.
If the problem is not disappears when all add-ons are disabled, please tell me, so we can work from there. Please have no fear of following my instructions to the line, as all can be easily undone.
Also, if you want to use an older version of Firefox, please use Firefox 3.5.11. Only versions 3.5.11 and 3.6.8 are supported, and both contain all the latest security fixes. Using any other version is unsafe and not recommended.

  • How to resize a layer or picture

I am brand new to anything PhotoShop. I have created a talk balloon that I plan on putting it on a photo. I have the text on it already. However, the area outside of the balloon must be tranparent. I made it transparent pixel by pixel. There must be an easier way. So my two questions are:
    1. How to make an area of a picture or layer transparent?
    2. How to resize a layer or .jpg picture or any picture that can be edited by PS Elements 12
Tried to include the talk balloon file but it failed because of the content. What is wrong with " Hmmmmmm"
"I think this one fits". It is a psd file.
    Bill

    1. How to make an area of a picture or layer transparent?
Select the area where you want  it to be transparent and use the Eraser of various types from the tool bar. there are essentially three types:  Eraser Tool, Magic Eraser and Background Eraser.  The selection tool has also many types.
How to resize a layer or .jpg picture or any picture that can be edited by PS Elements 12
To resize any picture you simply go to:
    Image >> Resize
Select what ever you want to resize the canvas or the Image.  If you are in PSD file then canvas resize might be appropriate but my answer is pretty general to give you the necessary options.  there is also the "Scale" of the image so you are spoilt for choices here.
You just need to be careful not to0 degrade the image so much by resizing because pixels per inch changes and lower the amount per inch degrades the image;  This is what happens when you increase the size while reverse is the case if you resize it downwards.
