How to restore itunes music and playlists but run from external HD?

Hi all,
I recently upgraded my macbook from Tiger to Snow Lepoard.
I backed up my entire HD onto my exteral harddrive and fromated my HD and rebooted with Snow Lepoard.
Is it possible to restore itunes to exactly how it used to be i.e. playlists etc, but, is it possible to do this but run all my music from my external harddrive rather than adding it back onto the computers HD?
Any help how to do this would be great.
Cheers

Start iTunes with the option key held down. Guide it to the library file on the external hard drive.  This is all assuming it is on there in some sort of regular format and not in an image file or some such.

Due to lack of space on my c drive I decided to move my music folder to my d drive. After I done this I noticed all my music was gone from itunes so I decided to move the music folder back to the c drive to try fix the problem. All my music and playlists etc are still missing from itunes. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem???

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • Move itunes music and playlists  from one disk to another on same mac pro

I was running Maverick 10.9.1 on my early 08 Mac Pro. I was having significant problems with the system locking up and having to shut it down manually. After discussing the problem with an Apple Support Rep, I executed a clean installed of Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on a new HDD.  I need to move my itunes library from the old Maverick HD to the new Snow Leopard HD. My Time Machine is corrupted for the old drive.  How can I move my music and playlists from itunes on the old drive Maverick to the new Snow Leopard drive?  I will also need to move my address book contacts.  Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks. This solved the iTunes problem.  Any suggestion as to how I cam move or copy my address book to the new HD?  I can't find the location of the address book files on the old HD.

  • How do I transfer music and playlists from an external hard drive to my new computer?

I just got a new pc and I need to transfer music and playlists that were saved to an external drive from 2 seperate computers.  There are 2 different sets of music and playlists, one mine and the other my husbands.
Is it possible to put both onto my new pc, and if so...how.  I am needing a step by step instruction as I am not real familiar with how to make these changes on iTunes.
    Thanks in advance

  • Restore iTunes library and playlists to new computer

Hi. I'm buying a new computer and am looking for an easy way to transfer all my music and playlists over from the old computer to the new one. I have the entire iTunes folder backed up onto a different network computer from my current (old) computer. Now the way I understand it, is if I copy the entire iTunes folder from my network computer onto the new computer, it will restore all my library and playlists. Is this right? The only problem is, I will be using different versions of iTunes. This is because I am moving from Windows 2000 to Vista and I can't download the latest version of iTunes to Windows 2000 because it isn't being supported any more.
Will I be able to restore my library and playlists from one version of iTunes to another? Any help you can give would be appreciated. Thanks!

Yes provided all your music files were in the iTunes Music folder in the iTunes folder, you should be able to copy the iTunes folder to your new PC and have all your playlists etc.
Install iTunes on the new PC first. Then, with iTunes closed and before you add any music, drag the iTunes folder out of the Music folder on the new PC to the desktop.
Then copy the iTunes folder from the backup onto the new PC to replace the one your dragged out.
You need to check the file permissions of the iTunes folder to ensure your account has full control, Vista is fussy about this, and the folder was created under another account.
Once you have done this, start iTunes and it should convert the library to the newer version etc. With any luck you will have your everything back as it was.

  • How can I migrate my itunes music and playlists from my old PC to my new macbook?

    Hi
I have a approx 250 GB of music and itunes content to move to my new macbook pro (running Lion) from my PC laptop (Windows 7)
I'd like to retain all the playlists that I have painstakingly built over the past few years but I dont want to rebuild them all manually. I'm not concerned about retaining info on play counts etc, I want to copy all the media to the mac and replicate the playlists.
None of the media is in the default itunes location (normally in Music in My Documents), the iTunes Media folder lives in another folder on my harddrive called 'Audio etc'. The majority of the music files are in various subfolders I created manually and the newest stuff lives in the iTunes Media folder (since I recently told iTunes to organise new music for me).
When I've moved my music from PC to PC I simply copied all the itunes files and copied my music to folders replicating the same file paths as per the previous computer so the playlists are looking for the music files in all the right locations. Easy.
I considered copying all the itunes library files from the pc to replace the existing itunes files on my mac and copy across all my music (not sure where to put it though).
I expect the 'migrate files' setup wizard on the mac would help me in this situation or is it cleverer that I think?
One suggestion I read was to use the consolidate function in iTunes which will copy my entire collection to the iTunes Media folder and I assume will update the file locations for the playlists and library file then some how migrate that to the mac. Only problem is my harddrive will not have nearly enough space to have duplicate copies of all that music in the iTunes Media folder and it's original location at the same time.
    Any suggestions?
I'm stupidly trying to do all this in time for a DJ gig tomorrow night but if I get desperate I'll just have to copy my music over and manually create some of my important playlists.
    Thanks
    Jon

  • How do i copy music and playlists from my iPod into iTunes

is there a way for me to plug in my iPod and have all the songs and playlists download to my computer. i had to reinstall iTunes so it has nothing in it right now, and i dont want to update my iPod with an empty library. can i either do what i previously said or get the playlist from my iPod and save it to my computer and import the playlists and music that way???

To get the tracks from the iPod, you won't need any software. Check this post for further info.
Unfortunately the Javascripts mentioned in that post don't work anymore, therefore you'll need some extra software to copy the playlists as well. For example the Anapod Copygear, the CasiCakes iPod2PC or the CopyPod. Any of those might be suitable for you.

  • How to back up all my iTunes music and playlists on a external hard drive

How do you back up your iTunes music & playlists to an external hard-drive (in this case a W.D.Elements)
My Computer is an I Mac 27 inch, Late 2013 OSX  Version 10.10 Upgraded to "Yosmite" on the 26th October 2014
Thanking you in anticipation of your help.
    Vince Cygan

    Thank you Niel,
My 21,574 music tracks are populating the external hard-drive as I reply. I'm assuming my playlists will accompany them. My playlists start with music from 1914 to the present, each year is divided into 4 month periods so I know almost exactly when each record was released or from 1952 onwards when it entered the charts.
According to the progress line the procedure should take 2 hrs 20 mins approx.
    Thank you once again Niel

    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync/delete all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.

  • Moving iTunes music and playlists to and External Drive

    Hi
I was running out of space on my PC, so I coppied all the music the .itl and .xml files onto an external hard drive (E:\). I then deleted the same files from the iTunes folder. I then went into iTunes under the Preferances / advanced tab and changed the directory location to point to my new E:\ drive but when I restarted iTunes nothing appears in the library or no play lists appears. Obviously I have done something wrong - what it the correct process to recover all the music and play lists that are now on the external E:\drive ?

I tried the same thing about 6 months ago. Unfortunately, the maestros at iTunes have created an annoying feature so that the iTunes library can ONLY be sited in your "My Music" folder on your internal hard drive.
From the iTunes help menu, "The iTunes Library file is a database of the songs and videos in your library and the playlists you've created. This file is located in the iTunes folder inside your My Music folder (in your My Documents folder). Do not move this file to another location. If you delete it, iTunes will create a new, empty copy the next time you open iTunes, but any playlists, song ratings, comments, or other information you created will be lost.
    What a monumental bummer!!

  • How to recover iTunes files and playlists

I recently had to reinstall the operating system on my computer. That means I had to reinstall iTunes from scratch. Fortunately, I kept a back-up of all the iTunes files on an external hard drive, so I should be able to recover everything.
However, I want to be able to recover how everything was organized previously including playlists.
Is it possible to use my backup files to recover the playlists? If yes, how? Thanks.

It depends exactly on what it was you backed up. If you made a back up of your entire iTunes folder that will have included the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). If that's what you did then copy the folder back to My Music and open iTunes while holding down the Shift key. You will get a box opening giving you the option to create a new library or navigate to an existing one. Navigate to where you copied the iTunes folder and choose the library file that's there: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file

  • I just want itunes music and database to be on external HD not internal

What am I doing wrong. I have itunes music library on my external HD and my itunes preferences say that my itunes music folder location is just that. It's about 41 GB. Ok, but why on my system drive is there an itunes folder in the default user music folder and it is 7 GB and there are certain titles in there that did not make it to the external. The database files are in there as well. Shouldn't everything be located in the external itunes music folder including the database files ? How do I have itunes automatically update the external HD folder and put the database files in there as well and stop using the internal system drive for storage and database.

I did that a while ago. But now it seems there are 7 GB of stray files. Is there a sync feature that moves only the itunes files that are outside the designated itunes folder, in my case they are living on the system drive for some reason...
