How to setup a Multi-instance standby database?

I was asked to setup a multi-instance standby database for a multi-instance primary database. I understand that only one of the instance will apply redo logs from the primary database, but how about the other instance? Should I mount that instance just to update the standby control file(the control file is not located in shared file system with the cluster server) even if it isn't going to apply any redo logs?
I am so confused now. Hope somebody will help me on that. Any document or tutorial will be helpful too.
Note that I am not using dataguard.
Thanks in advance

Hi,
You can set up multiple instance standby..where in each instance will receive the archive logs from correpsonding primary instance. Keep them on shared location (say ASM) so that one of the instances from where recovery is started can access the archive logs and apply it.
So basically
Primary instance A <----- send archive to ---> Standby A
Primary instance B <----- send archive to ---> Standby B
Start managed recovery on A
Standby A --- > Apply archives for instance A and B

    Yes, you can configure RAC to RAC primary and standby, Please refer MAA document http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/features/availability/maa-wp-10g-racprimaryracphysicalsta-131940.pdf
    Above 10g versions this document is applicable.

  • 10.2.0.4 patch on single instance standby database

    Hi All,
    We have production database 10.2.0.3 running with RAC having 2 nodes on Solaris 10. We have patched this
    databases to 10.2.0.4 (both nodes) on production without any issue.
    We have a physical standby database (10.2.0.3) with 2 nodes on solaris 10. But we have stopped node2 sometime
    back and currently it's a single instance standby database. Whe nwe are trying to apply patch to standby dataabse
    it's showing both node during installation and installation fails when it tries to search for node2.
    What's the solution for this problem? Any document on how to patch the single instance standby database when
    production is running in RAC.

    I think you are basically saying that you have a 2 node RAC cluster with 1 node down (possibly permanently) and you want to just patch 1 of the nodes?
    It's not overly a surprise the installer is trying to patch the other node, when as far as your inventory is concerned you have a 2 node cluster.
    Have you tried running the installer with the -local option?
    This should just patch your local node. Obviously the dictionary changes will get applied via MRP from the primary db.

  • How to setup Data guard for SAP database?

    Can someone please tell me how to setup data guard for SAP databases?
    Thanks,
    Abhi

    Hi Abhi,
    have a look at OSS 105047 - Support for Oracle functions in the SAP environment you find this under
    14
    Oracle Data Guard
    You can use "Physical Standby".
    You cannot use "Logical Standby".
    You are allowed to use Fast Start Failover (FSFO) but SAP Support is not provided.
    You can use Data Guard Broker.
    You can use Maximum Performance Mode, Maximum Availability Mode and Maximum Protection Mode.
    In the case of Maximum Availability and Maximum Protection, you must pay particular attention to a fast network connection in order to avoid performance problems.
    Maximum Protection causes the primary database to terminate if problems occur in the standby database.
    And here you find on Oracle white paper from 2010 http://www.oracle.com/us/solutions/sap/wp-ora4sap-dataguard11g-303811.pdf
    Perhaps some SAP user have answers for you http://scn.sap.com/community/oracle/content?query=guard

    This appears related to Bug 3298797 that was supposed to be fixed in 10.2.0.1. The workaround is to switch over to the standby, register the standby and then switch back.

  • How to re-synch primary and standby database?

    Hello everyone,
    Working on 10g R2/windows server 2003, I have configured a physical standby database but, I have an issue, and don't know how to resolve it.
    We were making an update that made some DDL and DML on our application, and for security reason we
    1. we ensure that primary and standby are in sync
    2. We made a cold backup of the primary database
    3. We Deferred the redo shipping between primary and standby
    4. We applied changes on primary database
    But the big issue is that, for any reason my colleague did the following.
    a) made above steps 1,2,3,4
    b) after the update he kept the resulted archived log files generated during to another location
    c) He restore the cold backup before the update(step 2 above)
    c) he applied again the update.
    Now the issue is
    At the first update step(2), the sequence# 553 was applied to the stand by before the update
    At the second update step(c) above another sequence# 553 was created but stored localy in the primary database, because the both servers were deverged (step 3 above).
    Technically both servers cannot be in sync again,because sequence# 553 at the first update has next_change# 80307804 and sequenc# 553 at the second update has next_change# 80461356.
    Question:
    How Can I do to rollback the the first sequence# 553 ( before the first update) on the standby database? in order to apply the sequence#553 generated at the second update and then re-sync both servers to roll forward subsequent sequence#? 554,etc...
    Thank you for your help

  • How to check data in physical standby database?

    Hi!
    I'm maintaining physical standby database system. everyday, i must check tranfer and apply progress. I known, it operate very good. No archive gap is found.
    But i want to check data in physical standby database that there is consistant with primary database, there isn't? What method do I use? How to do?
    thankS

    I hope the following will help
    Verifying the Physical Standby Database
    ==========================================
    Once you create the physical standby database and set up log transport services, you may want verify that database modifications are being successfully shipped from the primary database to the standby database.
    To see the new archived redo logs that were received on the standby database, you should first identify the existing archived redo logs on the standby database, archive a few logs on the primary database, and then check the standby database again. The following steps show how to perform these tasks.
    Step 1 Identify the existing archived redo logs.
    On the standby database, query the V$ARCHIVED_LOG view to identify existing archived redo logs. For example:
    SQL> SELECT SEQUENCE#, FIRST_TIME, NEXT_TIME
    2 FROM V$ARCHIVED_LOG ORDER BY SEQUENCE#;
    SEQUENCE# FIRST_TIME NEXT_TIME
    8 11-JUL-02 17:50:45 11-JUL-02 17:50:53
    9 11-JUL-02 17:50:53 11-JUL-02 17:50:58
    10 11-JUL-02 17:50:58 11-JUL-02 17:51:03
    3 rows selected.
    Step 2 Archiving the current log.
    On the primary database, archive the current log using the following SQL statement:
    SQL> ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG CURRENT;
    Step 3 Verify that the new archived redo log was received.
    On the standby database, query the V$ARCHIVED_LOG view to verify the redo log was received:
    SQL> SELECT SEQUENCE#, FIRST_TIME, NEXT_TIME
    2> FROM V$ARCHIVED_LOG ORDER BY SEQUENCE#;
    SEQUENCE# FIRST_TIME NEXT_TIME
    8 11-JUL-02 17:50:45 11-JUL-02 17:50:53
    9 11-JUL-02 17:50:53 11-JUL-02 17:50:58
    10 11-JUL-02 17:50:58 11-JUL-02 17:51:03
    11 11-JUL-02 17:51:03 11-JUL-02 18:34:11
    4 rows selected.
    The logs are now available for log apply services to apply redo data to the standby database.
    Step 4 Verify that the new archived redo log was applied.
    On the standby database, query the V$ARCHIVED_LOG view to verify the archived redo log was applied.
    SQL> SELECT SEQUENCE#,APPLIED FROM V$ARCHIVED_LOG
    2 ORDER BY SEQUENCE#;
    SEQUENCE# APP
    8 YES
    9 YES
    10 YES
    11 YES
    4 rows selected.

  • How to exclude tablespace in logical standby database

    Dear all,
    In which way does the creation procedure of a logical standby database differ than the standard ORA9.2 procedure (http://www.oracle.com/pls/db92/db92.to_pdf?pathname=server.920%2Fa96653.pdf&remark=docindex) if I want to exclude a tablespace in my standby database?
    Excluding tablespace in physical standby database is impossible.
    Thanks in advance.

    The goal of a stand by database is to become a clone fed online with transactions coming from the active database. If the cloned database in a physical dataguard configuration diverges from the active database it is useless, as transaction control takes place at a lower level (physical addresses are involved).

  • How to open a "manual" Physical standby database in read/write mode

    Hi,
    I am running Oracle Database 10g Release 10.2.0.3.0 - 64bit Production Standard Edition on Linux version 2.6.9-42.0.8.ELsmp ([email protected]) (gcc version 3.4.6 20060404 (Red Hat 3.4.6-3))
    I've created a physical standby database, but since I am running Standard Edition, I am not using the DataGuard features. I use the rsync utility to copy over the archivelogs to the standby database, and I apply them periodically to the standby database.
    The standby database is started this way :
    startup nomount pfile='/u01/oradata/orcl/initorcl.stdby';
    alter database mount standby database;
    Everything runs perfectly fine, I can do "alter database open read only" and then I can do selects into tables to confirm that everything is up to date.
    The thing is, if I shutdown immediate the database, then do just startup :
    shutdown immediate;
    startup;
    The database opens with no error messages, but is still in read-only mode...
    I read that the default behavior for a standby database is to open read-only, like I am experiencing, but I would like to know what is the right way to open it correctly in read-write mode (I understand that after that, my standby will not be standby anymore and that I will have to recreate my standby database).
    Thanks,
    Mat

    Hello,
    There're features which allows you to open a Standby database in Read/Write mode but for all I know
    it needs Entreprise Edition.
    In Enterprise Edition you can use Logical Standby database. More over, for Physical standby there's
    a way by using flashback database so as to rolling backward the database and avoiding to recreate
    the Standby.
    In Standard Edition I'm afraid that you'll have to recreate your Standby database.
    Best regards,
    Jean-Valentin

    Can any one give me the SQL to identifiy that my physical standby database is in real time applying redo logs?

    Thanks.

    You could just look at the alert log. Look for "Recovery of Online Redo Log"
    Or you could select from v$standby_apply_snapshot to see if the standby is up-to-date.
    select thread#, to_char(snapshot_time,'dd-mon-yyyy:hh24:mi'),
    to_char(applied_time,'dd-mon-yyyy:hh24:mi'),
    to_char(newest_time,'dd-mon-yyyy:hh24:mi') from V$STANDBY_APPLY_SNAPSHOT;

  • How to stop and cancel physical standby database (ORACLE 10g)

    Dear All,
    I have physical standby setup and I want stopped for the time being that to use the database as an normal DB (standalone inestance).
    Kindly advise and show me how do I do that.
    Regards,

    executing below query on primary db stops log shipping to standby.......i think this is sufficient for disabling your physical standby setup temporary
    alter system set log_archive_dest_state_2=defer scope=both;
    In future if you want your dataguard setup back..............you can rebuild the standby and enable the log_archive_dest_state_2 parameter.

  • How to setup new OC4J instance to host jdev business component (EJB)

    From Jdeveloper 9.0.3 I want to deploy a business component to an new oc4j instance running under 9ias version 9.0.3.
    In jdeveloper I have built and tested an application server connection (type=Oracle Application Sever Remote DCM) to my new oc4j instance on 9ias. My understanding is that the jdeveloper deployment profile wizard will help me construct a profile to build what is known as an "EJB session bean".
    Using EmWebSite, I have created and started the new oc4j instance, and i constructed a datasource to be used for the database connection.
    Is there anything else that I will need to do to the new 9ias oc4j instance prior to building the deployment profile in jdeveloper, and then running the deployment? For instance, does this new oc4j instance somehow have the necessary hooks in it to support this bc4j component? Do I need to install any missing jar files? Do I need to define rmi ports ? Do I need to configure BC4J support?
    BTW ... I have tried to pursue this topic from the Jdeveloper side but the support personnel are not familar with 9ias 903, nor are they familar with 9ias Remote DCM deployment.

    Yes, you should be able to deploy an BC4J application without making any other changes to an IAS instance. For standalone OC4J please look at http://otn.oracle.com/products/jdev/htdocs/config_oc4j_for_bc4j.html
