How to split imported music audio?

I have a movie where in the middle I want the music (which has been in the foreground simply by muting the clip) to fade back so that the actual clip auto becomes the foreground noise while the music fades back (but remains faintly heard) until toward the end, where again the music will be loud and the video audio will be silenced.

So you should have a clip video clip that is muted, right?
Select the frames out of this clip that you want to bring to the foreground so that there is a yellow border around them.
Now, control-click or right-click on this selection and pick SPLIT CLIP. On your new clip that you just split, set the volume to 100% and turn on the ducking feature to diminish all other tracks by the percentage you specify.

I have Roxio's Toast and looked into the apps but they -- like AudioX -- are a slick GUI and bells & whistles fronting minimal functionality. Audacity, however, is exactly the reverse: a bare-bones GUI fronting a 100 horsepower app with relatively vast breadth and depth of functionality. Highly recommended.

Have discovered how to split visual and audio tracks. However the cut away only seems to work with still images from iPhoto!

OK that sounds correct. Just to clarify, when the sign appears, as you release the mouse button (or whatever you are using), no menu pops up but the clip immediately positions itself:
at the front of the target clip, OR

No, there is no double-click or right-click involved at all. Just drag and drop, then select from the pop-up menu. You should be able to repeat this with no issues. I've also tested dropping video onto a still picture - the cutaway works on that as well.
Something is definitely not working correctly - strange! Quit iMovie, then try deleting the preference file as I described in my last post. Quitting and relaunching iMovie might even fix it. Also, try restarting your Mac - that sometimes helps.

Also, where you select mono or stereo for a track below the level meter you can click + hold and select L or R. Instead of bouncing, you can convert the files, for me this gives fewer room for error. Also disabling UTM works in some cases, but this is not ideal for every session.

Need help splitting an incomming audio stream

Just wondering how I would take streaming audio to a server and broadcast it to connected clients. So far I've created a realized processor taking in the audio stream, but I have a problem when I want to use that processor's data output to send to other users via a list of datasinks. I can use the output for the first datasink.. but then when I try to use the same data output for the next, the original datasink loses the output from the processor. I'm assuming there HAS to be a way to fix this problem (even if it means a whole new algorithm). Thx for any help or suggestions anyone can offer :)

Thx for the suggestion of forwarding the packets. The boss and I figured that would be the ultimate way to get this server working. Using the forwarding should also lighten the server-load considerably, as you mentioned.
New problem: I've been looking through the .net and .io components and can't quite figure how to do the forwarding. I've looked through many io classes and none seem to serve exactly that purpose. If you (or anyone for this matter) could point me (even moreso than before) in the right direction that would be very much appreciated. Thx in advance.

if you have a cue file you can use "cue-splitter"...just run a google search & you should find it..the only way I know to do it without the cue file is in an audio editing program manually.

Command + L does nothing. Any other ideas? What I saw in a tutorial was that they selected a clip, then did some key sequence and it split out the audio track from the video. The audio then showed up as a green section right below the video track. They were doing this to delete the audio. They would split it, then select the audio track, then delete it. I realize I can drop the audio level, but this seemed like an interesting option.

Multi-Take Cycling Audio Missing Revisited...

Apologizes for all the typos in a previous email on the multi-take recording audio missing. I have since done some research and have better terminology to use so I'll restate. I believe this could be a bug and want folks to be aware of it at the very least.
Someone else posted a problem with the "cycle multi-takes" saying that after using pieces of several takes on one track, as done in the instruction video shown in the link below from Apple, his problem was the audio showed up but was not playing at all. I have done the same thing, but the audio just disappeared in 2 out of 10 of my takes, nowhere to be found. It played perfectly while I previewing and deciding what to use, and all takes are still appearing in the drop down list, but when you select them, they are empty. Tried to post a picture of my screen, but can't figure out how to do that!

The only thing I did different from the video was to make a new track and copy the multitakes to it, decide what I wanted where and copied it back to the main track after splitting it appropriately.

I believe I have the same problem. When I record multiple takes and then CMND+T to split the track and use different takes, they disappear, re-appear, and sometimes are lost again for good. This is the worst sin a software developer can make--losing a musician's best takes.
I am furious at Apple for this, particularly since Apple Care has consistently claimed ignorance. Apple if you're reading this, you have made a mess of several nights work on several occasions for me. Thanks a lot.

How to split a PE1 project into two smaller projects?

I have a 1hr 36 min. project in PE1. I want to split it into two different projects of about 48 min. each and burn two DVDs. My intent is to get a better MPEG resolution for these smaller projects.
Can I select half of the timeline, cut it and paste it into a new project? Would the effects be preserved? I have a week of work invested in this project and I don’t want to screw it up!

Welcome to the forum.
I agree with both Neale and Steve, though it might at first appear that they are saying two different things.
The bit-rate in the Transcoding to MPEG-2 will be determined by the Duration of the Timeline and the capacity of the blank media, whether DVD-5, or DVD-9. In most versions of PrE, this bit-rate will be a function of the Quality Slider, but the ultimate bit-rate for the combined video and audio is set in the DVD-specs. One cannot exceed about 8 b/s.
Now, with your Duration, there might be a very slight increase in the bit-rate, were you to take Neale's advice and break your Project into two parts, however, I think that his advice to study the result of your entire Timeline is good, as I doubt that one could tell the differences, unless you have a great deal of fast motion, of either the camera, or the subject, and then it's likely that the quality would appear to be the same to the human eye.
Steve is correct in that the result will have to be within the DVD-specs, and will only be 720x480, at up to that max. bit-rate. That is as good as it gets.
For the ultimate test, I would take Neale's suggestion on Burning to Folder one step further. Once that is done, you can first test your Project with a DVD software program on your computer. BUT, be aware that you are viewing on a higher-rez, progressive computer monitor, and its rez will exceed that of a TV and that of a DVD-Video disc. Thus, it is not a perfect test. To get an idea of how the DVD will look on a set-top player, hooked to a TV, you can either, also burn to a DVD RW (rewritable disc) to test on a set-top player, or you can use the free burning utility, ImgBurn, to burn to a DVD RW and test. The reason for the Rewritable media is so that you can reuse it for testing. You will NOT be using this disc for delivery, but just for testing. Now, if you feel that very slight decrease in bit-rate is noticed, you can go back to his suggestion on how to split the Project, and then produce a multi-disc. set for the Project.
Also, the ultimate quality and also playability of the DVD-Video will be enhanced if you use quality blank media. I strongly recommend Verbatim, or Taiyo Yuden blank media. Brands like Memorex, TDK, recent Ritek and ALL "store-brands," are to be avoided. One is also best served by buying slower speed media, as PrE will measure the speed of the media and the speed of the drive and try to get you the fastest possible burn. It does not allow you to set the speed of the burn manually. Most people feel that stepping down from a max. burn speed produces a better DVD. I routinely will drop the burn speed (in other software) to about 1/2 of the max., and have had thousands of perfect DVD's. One can set the burn speed in the above mentioned ImgBurn utility.
To distill the above: try it and see if your Project isn't perfect now, and if not, then break it apart into two segments. I doubt that you could tell the difference.

I feel that I was “sold” a product that does not do what the advertising said it would. Take a look at the verbiage that is used (mostly by Adobe) as they present this product to be sold. For instance the initial product page for Soundbooth on Adobe.com states... “Create and edit audio with ease” When they say “Create and edit audio...” it is implied to those of us who do audio editing that it will do, at the very least, splitting a sound clip.
On the Adobe Features page of Soundbooth it lists... “One-click edits Perform edits for common tasks, including volume normalization, fades, and overall file volume adjustment, with a single mouse click.” So, Adobe says it will... “Perform edits for common tasks...”. A task like splitting a clip is certainly a common audio editing task, yet Adobe Soundbooth does not do this.
Adobe goes on in the Features page... “Fast cut, copy, and paste editing Use powerful sample-accurate tools to cut, copy, paste, fade, and stretch audio assets.” By saying “Fast cut, copy, and paste editing” and “Use powerful sample-accurate tools to to cut, copy, paste...” you are lead to believe that it will do complete audio and waveform editing. Unfortunately, it is missing the one simple tool that would make Soundbooth a complete sound editing program. i.e. Being able to cut and split a sound clip.
From Wikipedia:
“Adobe Soundbooth is a digital audio editor by Adobe Systems for Mac OS X, Windows Vista and 7. Adobe has described it as being "in the spirit of SoundEdit 16 and Cool Edit 2000".”
Wikipedia says... “A digital audio editor is a computer application for audio editing, i.e. manipulating digital audio. Digital audio editors are the main software component of a digital audio workstation.”
All this information about Adobe Soundbooth and it does not do the one basic, common task of a digital audio editor: Split, cut and paste sound clips.

How do you sync two audio clips without a clapper board?

... so the cameras had to be well back to catch the whole shot, and to catch the sound, we used a separate audio recorder closer to the performers.
In hindsight, I suppose we could have used a clapper board but if the board was close to the recorder, it would be hard to see... and if it was closer to the cameras, it would be hard to hear the clap on the recorder.
now the question is how to perfectly sync the better audio from the recorder with the lesser audio from the cameras (then delete the lesser audio)
so far, its not quite right and their lips are off like an old Japanese Sci Fi Movie. Is there any way to move one track frame by frame over the other to get it right? (some sort of keyboard command?)
OR is there some sort of app that someone wrote that could overlay the the good audio with the reference audio and sort of "snap it" into position? The waveforms look similar aside from the quality and strength of the signals.

just wanted to revisit this post. Were onto something great here!
so to update us, I DL'ed "PluralEyes" but it didn't work. Each time I pointed it at the program file, it shut itself down. I tried rebooting the whole machine, trashing preferences etc but it wouldn't work.
the developers were great! got back to me asap. I sent the crash reports and the file I was working on and they discovered a "huge bug"
Today, they emailed me a link to a FIX which be included in their next version but they allowed me to try it today and guess what? it FIXED it!
So I started the app and let it run (its over 2 hr program) the app ran for like an hour and put out two new sequences, "unsynced" and "synced"
but i have some questions;
there were two cameras and a separate audio recorder.
in "synced" it lined up the recorder audio with the camera 1 audio but it pushed camera 2 and its audio to the side (further down the timeline)
of course, what we want is for camera 2 to also be synced (or sunk;-) so when we cut between cameras, the lips are still in sync.
now how do we get it to line up camera 2?

in the "synced" sequence, we need to sync camera 2 with camera 1.
also, it has left out much of the program in the "synced sequence" there are actually three tapes from each camera. you can see here that we are left with one tape from each camera.
what do we do from here?
also, before moving anything around, I can link the tracks but that doesnt stop them from getting out of sync. and locking the tracks means they cannot be moved. so how do you attach the audio to video without getting out of sync?
.... In the "good ol days" (so Ive heard) editors had years and years to master their craft. Film & Splicing were in power for like what? 75 years?
Now there are new programs emerging every day with entirely their own learning curve! But if this works just this once, its well worth buying it! its a fantastic app! Im sure it just takes some getting used to!

So you have business contacts that were lost... do you not have these on a Database in some shape or form? Sounds like you need to invest in a RAID1 backup setup for your computer so you dont have this issue in the future.
As for repairing your problem, sounds like you are going to need to start from scratch at this point or if the data is still on your phone look into a program that can take the information from the phone onto iTunes.
