How to tether Mac pro to existing wifi with airport extreme

Wifi where I live.  Need Mac pro on net.  Have airport extreme.  Does apple disable this for marketing reasons to sell wifi internal card?  Or, can I use what I have?  Thanks!  Using Lion
BTW. Mac is less stable with Lion!!!!  Like using microsoft used to be :-(

2009 and earlier Mac Pros did not include a Wi-Fi card in the standard configuration.
Check the System Information app (in the Utilities folder) -> Network -> Wi-Fi and see if it indicates a wireless card is installed.

  • Mac Pro Drops Wireless Connection to Airport Extreme

I have a Mac Pro and every time I leave the machine for several hours when I return the Airport signal strength indicator is blank and I have to re-choose my network name to get back on the network.
As background, my Mac Pro is setup to never go to sleep as it is hosting some web sites, the only thing that sleeps is the display, so I don't think it is any kind of issue on wake from sleep . . . it just drops the signal at some point.
Has anyone ever heard of this kind of issue? It has always been this way and I just moved my Mac Pro to a location in my house where a wired connection is no longer feasible so I really want to try and resolve it... THANKS
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Slow connections, weak signal, dropped, lost signal after sleep...
While Apple has a good "troubleshooting networking" the Mac Pro using Wireless has had more of its own. I would pick up a Netgear router, go wired.

  • Mac Pro - can I install the Airport Extreme card myself

Or do I need to have the store do it? I have a Mac Pro 2.66 tower and want to get wireless internet.
    Thank you!

The Mac Pro wireless card is an item that is installed by an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP).

  • How to make Mac OS X Server auto-configure Airport Extreme port-mapping

Mac OS X Server can automatically configure AirPort Extreme to make services such as iChat, Mail, Web, and VPN accessible: http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/features/networking-vpn.html
I presume this configuration generally takes place during a fresh installation of the server.
Is there any way to re-run this process post-installation?

That page talks about Snow Leopard's Networking abilities, not Leopards.
Off hand, I don't know whether what you describe is a new feature in Snow Leopard or not, but I've never seen Leopard do it (and, to be honest, wouldn't want to).
In either case, it's basically just Bonjour telling the router to configure port forwarding. Given that, I'd start by enabling mod_bonjour in Apache:
    #LoadModule bonjour_module libexec/apache2/mod_bonjour.so
but I don't know how other processes are doing it.

  • Using my existing Livebox wifi with airport extreme n

    Hi
I have two laptops (windows) and wireless broadband supplied by an Orange livebox, one laptop connected to a printer and the other not connected to the printer, I bought a new airport extreme n base station so that I could print from either laptop and share an external hard drive...sounded pretty straight forward until I tried to put things into practice.
Problem is I want the printer and livebox in completely different places and dont want cables between them but the option in Utilities asks to connect the extreme and livebox by ethernet, works when I do this but I want wireless!!!
Can anyone till me if this is possible or wil I need an extra base station (dont fancy spending another £130)

Hello AMG22. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
To extend an existing wireless network wirelessly, you would need to create a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of WDS ... so it very unlikely that your Orange-provided router can be extended wirelessly with the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn).

  • Extend existing network with Airport extreme and 3 airport express.

I want to extend an existing network (thomson TG787v) with an airport extreme (MD031Z/A) with 3 or 4 airport express(MC14Z/A)
The thomson is the router from the provider and must be used. The building is an old mansion with a lot of brick walls
I tried to connect the extreme with an ethernet cable (in bridge mode) and then connect the airport express in a line to have wifi in all rooms of the mansion.
But somehow the airport extremes cannot extend the network.
Can anyone tell me how to setup the apple devices to make this work?
    Thanks
    Bernhard

I tried to connect the extreme with an ethernet cable (in bridge mode)
    This is the correct.
and then connect the airport express in a line to have wifi in all rooms of the mansion.
Apple's "extend a wireless network" feature will only allow you to "extend" the signal one time. So, the first Express would connect to the AirPort Extreme wirelessly and extend the signal.
But, you cannot "extend" the signal a second or third time. Each AirPort Express must be located so that it connects directly to the AirPort Extreme.  In other words, each AirPort Express must be located about the same distance from the AirPort Extreme.
Another way of thinking about his is to visualize the hub and spokes of a wheel. The AirPort Extreme would be located at the "hub".  Each AirPort Express would be located at then end of a "spoke".  As such, each AirPort Express communicates directly to the AirPort Extreme.....not to another AirPort Express at the end of another hub.
You may need to consider installing Ethernet cable to each location where you will need an AirPort Express and configure the network that way.  Performance wise, this is a much better way to "extend" the network.

  • How do I use time machine back up with airport extreme

I want to use my airport extreme to back up with time machine, I am not that good with computers, so could some one please explain to me how to do this.
    Thanks
    Ben

Unfortunately, Apple does not support Time Machine backups to a hard drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme due to corruption issues.
Despite this, some users who have tried this have success with this, some limited success and some no success.
Our recommendation would be to connect the hard drive directly to your computer and use Time Machine that way.
To do this, you would need to make sure that the hard drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), or buy a hard drive that has been pre-formatted for Mac. Then connect the drive to the USB port on the Mac.
After that, you would open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock), then open Time Machine to turn it ON, click Select Disk to select your hard drive and then click Use For Backup. That will get Time Machine backups going.

  • Time Machine over WiFi with Airport Extreme

I have had an iMac for 5 years with a WD 500 gb drive hardwired (Firewire 400) into the machine for use with Time Machine. I just got a new Macbook Pro 15". When I opened the machine, I migrated everything over from my old iMac using the Time Machine Backups drive. Everything was working fine and TM recognized all of my old backups.
A couple days later, I wanted to up the portability of the laptop so I plugged my drive in USB to my Airport Extreme. The Macbook immediately recognized the shared drive and every put a little "Time Machine Backups" icon mounted on the desktop. I went into the Time Machine preferences and designated the network drive as my backup drive. It seemed to be working but the first time it went to backup, it created a new .sparsebundle file, even though I still have the Backups folder full of the old backups. It then tried to create another .sparsebundle file with the same name as my computer but with a 1 at the end.
I went to my local Genius bar and the guy plainly said "Time Machine does not work wirelessly unless its a time capsule. (Sarcastically) The only people who can answer that question are the software engineers who designed Time Machine".
The fact that Time Machine and the MBP immediately recognized the wireless drive as a backup disk tells me that its possible to do it. Is there anyway to tell Time Machine to include all of the backups on the drive and not to start from scratch??
    Thanks.

But I was not using a new backup drive, it was the same drive, just different connection. How do I tell it to incorporate the backup files on the drive into the time machine program?
You can't. Time Machine stores it's backups differently when they're done over a network, and you can't switch between the two.
You might be able to copy the "local" backups to be used over the network. See #18 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
And you need to know that backing up with Time Machine to a USB drive connected to an Airport Extreme is "iffy" and +*not supported by Apple.+* See Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Printing stopped over wifi with AirPort Extreme

I've had an Epson and Brother wifi printers setup to print wirelessly using an AirPort Extreme. This worked fine for over a year. Now, however, neither will print. I've reinstalled all drivers, reset the AirPort and I still cannot print to a Mac with 10.8.2 or an iPad 3 with iOS 5 or 6 with either printer.
I either get a printer error message that says "filter failed" or "printer offline".
However, when I create an ad hoc wifi network on the Mac, I can connect and print to the printers wirelessly on both the iPad and Mac with no problems.
I've also tried to print with a new Time Capule and was also unable to print.

I found the problem. I had an ethernet cable connected from the AirPort Extreme to my Comcast digital cable box. This caused the printer to be assigned an IP address in the range of 192.168.* instead of the correct range of 10.0.1.*. Simply, unplugging the ethernet cable from the AirPort and cable box and restarting the printer fixed the problem—I can print again.

  • Extending wifi with AirPort Extreme

I have a D-Link wireless router from Optimum.  Can I use my AirPort Extreme to extend the wifi signal to dead spots on the other side of the house?

Yes, if you locate the AirPort Extreme where it is needed for additional wireless coverage, and connect the AirPort Extreme to the D-Link router using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection.
If you cannot run the Ethernet cable, a pair of Ethernet powerline adapters might be able to send the signal over the existing AC powerlines in your home.
No, if you were hoping to have the AirPort Extreme connect using wireless to extend the network.

  • How do i use my own dhcp server with airport extreme

I just bought an airport extreme and I'm trying to replace my linksys router and another access point.
I have my own dhcp/dns server and I want to continue using it. So far, I was not able to find the way to use NAT without DHCP (like I'm doing now with my current setup).
I want to give the device another chance before I return it to the store. Is there anything I can do?
    Thanks

I thought that you could figure out the answer for yourself, but if you need more confirmation.....the choices/options that you need do not exist on an AirPort router.
Cisco or Netgear might be brands to look at.  Good luck in your quest.

  • How do I bridge motorola NVG510 to work with Airport Extreme

Hey everyone, I need some help.
I just got uverse and they sent me a motorola Nvg510 router.  I need to put it under bridge mode so I can use the airport extreme and use the guest network functionality.  I don't know what settings to put the motorola router and the airport extreme.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Please let me know if I have to provide any more information.
    Thanks,
    AC

I've put up a webpage to explain how to "force" the modem in effective bridge mode here:
    http://www.ron-berman.com/2011/11/24/motorola-nvg510-help-page-for-att-u-verse-u sers/
    (See question 6).
To get the IP address, just use what your NVG510 reports as "Broadband IPv4 Address" in the Broadband tab of its configuration page.
This address is mostly static (hasn't changed for me in months), and will only change where AT&T make a physical change on the line.

  • Retina MacBook Pro is not connecting with Airport Extreme 5 GHz signal

I believe I have done my due diligence to find the answer to my question here and other places but I must be missing it. I have a Retina MacBook Pro that as far as I know should select the 5 GHz signal from my Airport Extreme (Generation 1 with 7.6.4 firmware) which is literally 3 ft. from my computer. When I click on the Airport icon in the menu bar, it is indicating a 2.4 GHz connection. I have looked at discussions which say I can give separate names to to both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signals. I can't seem to find that. I also read where you can reorder the order of signal preference. I can't seem to find that either. Interestingly, I have an Airport Express that is extending the network. When option clicking on its icon in airport utility, I can see both the 2.4 and 5 GHz information. I don't se that in the Airport Extreme. I am thinking about gettng the newest Airport Extreme but if I don't need to...
    Thanks for any help!

as far as I know should select the 5 GHz signal from my Airport Extreme (Generation 1 with 7.6.4 firmware) which is literally 3 ft. from my computer
A Generation 1 AirPort Extreme is not a simultaneous dual band wireless router. It can produce either a 2.4 GHz....or....a 5 GHz wireless network signal, but not both simultaneously.
If you want the Gen 1 Extreme to produce and deliver a 5 GHz wireless network, it can do so, but any 2.4 GHz devices that you have will not be able to connect to the 5 GHz signal.
A new simultaneous dual band AirPort Extreme will produce both a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signal simultaneously. Wireless devices will automatically connect to the best signal quality based on their capabilities and location in relation to the AirPort Extreme.

  • Mac Mini Bluetooth Connections Issues with Airport Extreme

    Hi,
The issue I'm having is my apple bluetooth devices will not connect to my mac mini. This problem started a few weeks ago and i have narrowed it down to my Airport Extreme which is right next to my Mac Mini. I have tried adjusting the channels and removing the Wide channel option on the Airport Extreme this has helped I can use my magic pad (not really up to par but it works). When I disconnect my Airport all my bluetooth devices work great. Moving my airport extreme isn't an option without a large amount of work putting in a new cable outlet. I don't know what changed from a few weeks ago as the devices have always been within inches of each other and worked fine.
I was trying to find a way to disable the 2.4 band on the airport extreme but this for as far as i know can't be done. I'm running out of ideas on what to do next any help would be great.

Are you sure it's not the monitor? Monitors have been known to do this.
Try changing the broadcast channel on the AEX using the Airport Utility.
