How to veriy if the contents of a field is STRING

Hello All,
In START_ROUTINE of Tranfer routine:
I would like to verify that a field in DATA_PACKAGE-CUSTNM is string. Because, due to bad data I am finding numeric values, in this field.
I would like to remove that record from DATA_PACKAGE, if there is no STRING in this field.
How do I do it? Is there a function / code?

Do you want to discard the data package if all characters in custnm are numbers or also if only one charcter is a number?

this one says not a number as soon as one character is not a number. you can easily modify it to check whether all characters are numbers
