- Also, confirm your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers.

So, you need an older version of the iOS app, because the current version no longer works on your iPod touch.
If you do regular backups of your hard drive (as you should), such as by using Apple's built-in Time Machine (if you use a Mac), you may find the older version of the app in the backup archive, and restore it (replacing the newer version). They are stored in the iTunes Media folder, in the Mobile Applications sub-folder. You should then be able to sync the older version to your iPod touch.
I can't think of any other way to get it back...
NOTE: An 2nd gen iPod touch can run up to iOS 4.2.1. If your iPod touch is running something earlier, and that is why the app no longer works, you can also consider updating the iPod's iOS.
I use an even older iPhone (original). I avoid this potential problem by aways updating its apps on the iPhone, not in iTunes on the computer. When I do it on the iPhone, it will not download a newer version of an app that won't run on my old iPhone.

Resolution
Note: If you have an iPod shuffle you may need to use the iPod Reset Utility to restore the iPod. If you are not sure which iPod you have, see Identifying iPod models.
To troubleshoot this issue, try the following solutions in this order:
Disconnect and reconnect your iPod to iTunes, and then attempt to restore or update the iPod again.
Restart your computer and then attempt to restore or update the iPod again.
Try connecting your iPod to a different USB port, and then attempt to restore or update the iPod again. Connecting to a USB 2.0 port is recommended. For Windows computers, refer to Identifying USB 2.0 ports on your computer for instructions.
Remove any USB devices not manufactured by Apple that you have connected to your computer (it is not necessary to remove your keyboard or mouse). Then, attempt to restore or update the iPod again.

Yes if you have the iPod and iTunes set up to sync via wifi. However, you have to do it from your one syncing computer and the iPod and computer have to be on the same network.

ITunes Fails To Download iOS For iPod Touch In Recovery

I have an iPod Touch 5 (without camera) that was messed with by someone and ended up disabled for 45 years. As waiting 45 years until I can put in the pass code is not practical, *snickers* I put the iPod into Recovery Mode and went to restore it on iTunes (latest version running on Windows 8), and it wants to update the software to the latest version with the restore. All is well and it starts downloading the around 1.4GB software download. My internet is fairly slow currently. It will get awhile in (about 70-80mb) and a message pops up saying that the internet connection timed out or some similar message appears. When I try again it completely restarts the download. I have tried about three times. I have also restarted the computer. How can I get it to download or even skip the update completely? I have 45 years but id like to get it fixed sooner. lol

Hi Jen. My daughter just compleated her nursing program and is now working as a full time nurse. Focus and study hard and soon you will be there too. Now to the problem at hand. I have the same problem. I gave up on it and satisfied myself with my iPod without the upgrade. Reason being I've read so many posts of people having problems after the upgrade. But I'm sure other factors are involved. Nevertheless here is the fix most say works to solve the problem: What ever virus protection you have installed on your computer, disable it. Then try to install the update. After that enable the protection. I had Kaspersky, and it does it's job well. The thinking is, the virus protection is blocking the upgrade. Hope this works. Charlie

It has been telling me that the activation server might be temporarily down since two weeks ago or even more.
Is the server really down?
