How to write a specific bytes of a string

I'm using DataOutputStream object to write a specific string to a file. If I want to write that string
to a file with preserving of 20 bytes (for example) as a header of the file. Even though the length of the string can be at any size, I just want it alwayst in 20 bytes. How could I do that. Please help! Thanks a lot.

String s = "Less than 20";
while(s.length() < 20) {
     s += " ";
System.out.println(s + " " + s.length());Mark

    thread was posted twice due to chrome refresfment. Please ignore the thread and reply to How to write regular expression to find desired string piece

    The approach is to do cartesian join to a 'number' table returning number of records equal to number of names in the string.I have hardcoded 2 but you can use regexp_count to get the number of occurrences of the pattern in the string and then use level <=regexp_count(..... .
    See below for the approach
    with cte as(
    select
    'name:ali#lastname:kemal#name:mehmet#lastname:cemal' col ,level lev
    from dual connect by level <=2)
    select substr(regexp_substr('#'||col,'#name:\w+',1,lev),7)

  • How could I choose some bytes from HEX string and then convert it to a decimal value?

    Hi I am working with an OMRON E5EN temperature controller using VISA serial to get data, I send the Read from Variable Area command and get this string  in hexa 0230 3130 3030 3030 3130 3130 3030 3030 3030 3030 3041 3203 71 or .01000001010000000000A2.q in ASCII this string means:

    03 ETX

    I want to choose the eight bytes for the temperature data and convert it to a decimal number. I have seen the examples to convert a Hexa string to decimal but I do not know how to choose the specifics bytes that I need.
    I have look for a driver but i didn´t find any. I am a beginner so please include especific topics for me to study in your answer.
    Thanks
    Carlos Fuentes Silva Queretaro Mexico

    If the response always has the temperature starting with byte 15 and is always 8 bytes in length, you can use the String Subset function to get those bytes out of the string.  Then use Hex String to Number to convert to a decimal number.
    Well someone already beat me to the solution:

    Hi, Mennan,
    You can nest REGEXP_SUBSTR withing REGEXP_REPLACE to get the n-th occurrence, like this:
    SELECT     lst
    ,      REGEXP_REPLACE ( REGEXP_SUBSTR ( lst
                                      , 'name:[^#]*#lastname'
                               , 1
                               , n
                     , 'name:(.*)#lastname'
                     , '\1'
                     )      AS nm If the pattern occurs fewer than n times, the expression above returns NULL.

  • How to write Functional Spec s for Duplicate and Postal Check for ELM

    Hi Guru s
    Can any one guide me how to write functional specifications for Duplicate Check and postal Check for ELM kindly share information on this.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Prasanna

    Hello Jaya,
    I would say that there are many ways to write a FS. Maybe every big company has its own template. As it is the functional spec and not the technical one, I would say that you only need to describe what you want to see on the screen (like with mock-screenshots) or which functionality you want to have from a super-user''s point of view. All the technical details like which database table or function modules need to be investigated by the developer or technical consultant. I am currently in a SAP CRM Service in the technical role and that is the way we work here and I am fine with that. Unfortunately I am not allowed to send you an example.

    Hi Everyone:
    Does anyone know how to write and read data in a
    specific memory location by using Java ?
    I need pointers, but I don't know how to do it ??
    Thanks for answering
    RodgerWith Java you cannot write to a specific memory location. Java does not have pointers. If you really want to do it, you need to use JNI, i.e write the required functions in C (or other languages that support pointers) and make those functions available to Java (through JNI). This approach is not portable. You can have a look at http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/native1.1/index.html

  • How to write the tech specification ?

    hi can any 1 tell me how to write the technical specification when a functional spec is given.
    guys i need a sample spec or format of it . any help is appreciated
    please any one send some reports with code

    Hello Selva
    The first link provided by Vijayendra provides an already quite comprehensive specification. What I like in particular is chapter "1.15 Assumptions".
    I add a similar chapter to my specifications called <b>"Assertions"</b> which I prefer to place more at the beginning of the document. This chapter contains all assertions (mainly provided by the customer) on which the application is based. For example: <i>"The receiver (of certain costs) is either a single cost center or a cost center group but never both"</i> (technically possible in the SAP transaction).
    Within the application I try to document these assertions using checkpoint groups and assertions (more about this in the informative Weblog of Claudia Dangers /people/claudia.dangers/blog/2005/09/07/how-to-instrument-your-abap-code-with-checkpoint-groups).
    Why do I place this chapter on top of the specification? The customer should see this assertions/assumptions quite early in order to find any mistakes.
    Finally, what I have missed in the specification was a chapter <b>"Authorizations".</b>

  • How can I set specific bits in a 16-bit integer?

    Hello everyone,
    as the title says I need to modify or rather to set a specific bit in a string which then is sent to a motor. I need to be sure that my command is correct as I am experiencing troubles with that motor and need to identify if its source.
    First of all my strings have to be in the Little Endian order. Then the structure of the string should be the following:
    Change Velocity command ‘V’xxCR 056h + one unsigned short (16-bit) integer + 0Dh (Note: Uppercase ‘V’)
    Note: The lower 15 bits (Bit 14 through 0) contain the velocity value. The high-order bit (Bit 15) is used to indicate the microstep-to-step resolution: 0 = 10, 1 = 50 uSteps/step.
    Until now, I used Flatten To String to convert 32 bit integers into bytes of the correct order. I thought I could use the Join Numbers function, but that only works for at least 8 bit numbers and there is no "1 bit number". I searched for an option to build a a string and set the bits via a Boolean Cluster, but I did not really understand how to transfer this to my problem.
    How can I build up the correct 16-bit integer (e.g. set the velocity to "10000" with a resolution of 50 µSteps/step)
    I would like to add the "V" and the CR via Concatenate Strings to the 16-bit integer, but other possibilites are also welcome.
    I have seens the examples for bit manipulation in C-code, but I wish to do this with LabView as I am not familiar with C,matlab and so on.
    Thank you very much for your help!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    You really need to learn Boolean logic and how to shift bits around.
    AND is really good for masking out bits (forcing them to 0) and OR is really good for adding bit values.  Then Logical Shift is used to get the bits in the right places before doing the AND and OR.
    NOTE: Rate is an enum with 10 being a value of 0 and 50 being 1.

  • How to know the specific size of a field in oracle table

    Hello,
    oracle 11.2.0.3 on redhat
    i have three tables with same structure, table0, table50, table100:
    create table table0 (id number, shipment RAW(2000), options RAW(2000));
    i inserted 10000 rows in each but with some differences:
    table0 has 10000 id, but shipment and options has null values
    table50 has 10000 id, but shipment and options has only 5000 rows, the other 5000 are null values
    table100 has 10000 rows of id, shipment and options. No null values.
    I want to know the specific size of each column, also the size of each row, to know the exactly size of the field.
    for example:
    row 1, column options of table100 has "asdfasdfagasdgasbabsdgoasdpgiahnwe1129u412094u12"
    row 2, column options of table100 has "a".
    both are raw datatype, but i think its space will has different size (bytes), how to know it? any query?
    I found this query:
    select owner,tablespace_name,segment_name,sum((bytes/1024/1024)) Bytes
    from sys.dba_extents
    where owner in 'MAA' and segment_type='TABLE' and segment_name ='TABLE00'
    group by tablespace_name,owner,segment_name
    order by owner,tablespace_name,segment_name, bytes; but i think it isn't my solution.

    thx mr. sb92075
    i tried with vsize too but same result:
    with table50
    SELECT VSIZE(OPTIONS) FROM TABLE00;
    VSIZE(OPTIONS)
                 1000
                 1000
                 1000
                 1000
                   *with table100
    SELECT VSIZE(OPTIONS) FROM TABLE100;
    VSIZE(C_ELECCION)
                 2000
                 2000
                 2000
                 2000
                      *it's the same size for 'a' like 'abcasdfjañldngaosnbaposnbpaosuqroiwejrklasndiaoshbaposdjgajs'?? It's hard for me to believe.
    data is saved in blocks, a extents is a contiguos number of blocks and a group of extensions are segments. If you insert some text in a table field, Oracle create a extension and insert there the data but depend the bytes you insert Oracle will create one or more extents. How to know this specific space in that field?

  • Really need help on how to write this program some 1 plz help me out here.

    i am new to java and i confused on how to be writing this program.
    i have completed the Part 1 but i am stuck on Part 2 & 3 so it would would be really great if any 1 could help me out on how to write the program.
    Part I
    An algorithm describes how a problem is solved in terms of the actions to be executed, and it specifies the order in which the actions should be executed. An algorithm must be detailed enough so that you can "walk" through the algorithm with test data. This means the algorithm must include all the necessary calculations.
    Here is an algorithm that calculates the cost of a rectangular window. The
    total cost of a window is based on two prices; the cost of the glass plus the cost of the metal frame around the glass. The glass is 50 cents per
    square inch (area) and the metal frame is 75 cents per inch (perimeter).
    The length and width of the window will be entered by the user. The
    output of the program should be the length and width (entered by the user)
    and the total cost of the window.
    FORMULAS:
    area = length times width perimeter = 2 times (length plus width)
    Here is the corresponding algorithm:
    read in the length of the window in inches
    read in the width of the window in inches
    compute the area
    compute the cost of the glass (area times 50 cents)
    compute the perimeter
    compute the cost of the frame (perimeter times 75 cents)
    compute the total cost of the window (cost of glass plus cost of frame)
    display the length, width and total cost
    The next step would be to "desk check" the algorithm. First you would need to make up the "test data". For this algorithm, the test data would involve making up a length and a width, and then calculating the cost of the window based on those values. The results are computing by hand or using a calculator. The results of your test data are always calculated before translating your algorithm into a programming language. Here is an example of the test data for the problem given:
    length = 10
    width = 20
    area = 200, glass cost= 100.00 (area times 50 cents)
    perimeter = 60, frame cost = 45.00 (perimeter times 75 cents)
    total cost =145.00
    Once the test data is chosen, you should "walk" through the algorithm using the test data to see if the algorithm produces the same answers that you obtained from your calculations.
    If the results are the same, then you would begin translating your algorithm into a programming language. If the results are not the same, then you would attempt to find out what part of the algorithm is incorrect and correct it. It is also
    necessary to re-check your hand calculations.
    Each time you revise your algorithm, you should walk through it with your test data again. You keep revising your algorithm until it produces the same answers as your test data.
    ?Now write and submit a Java program that will calculate the cost of a rectangular window according to the algorithm explained. Be sure to prompt for input and label your output.?
    Part II
    Write, compile and execute a Java program that displays the following prompts:
    Enter an integer.
    Enter a second integer
    Enter a third integer.
    Enter a fourth integer.
    After each prompt is displayed, your program should use the nextint method of the Scanner class to accept a number from the keyboard for the displayed
    prompt. After the fourth integer has been entered, your program should calculate and display the average of the four integers and the value of the first integer entered raised to the power of the second integer entered. The average and result of raising to a power should be included in an appropriate messages
    (labels).
    Sample Test Data:
    Set 1: 100 100 100 100
    Set 2: 100 0 100 0
    Be sure to write an algorithm first before attempting to write the Java code. Walk through your algorithm with test data to be sure it works as anticipated.
    Part III
    Repeat Part lI but only calculate the average, not the power. This time, make sure to use the same variable name, number, for each of the four numbers input. Also use the variable sum for the sum of the numbers. (Hint: To do this, you may use the statement sum = sum + number after each number is read.)
    For Part 1 this is what i got
    import java.util.Scanner;
    public class Window
         public static void main(String[] args)
              double length, width, glass_cost, perimeter, frame_cost, area, total;
              Scanner keyboard = new Scanner (System.in);
              System.out.println("Enter the length of the window in inches");
              length = keyboard.nextInt();
              System.out.println("Enter the width of the window in inches");
              width = keyboard.nextInt();
              area = length * width;
              glass_cost = area * .5;
              perimeter = 2 * (length + width);
              frame_cost = perimeter * .75;
              total = glass_cost + frame_cost;
                   System.out.println("The Length of the window is " + length + "inches");
                   System.out.println("The Width of the window is " + length + "inches");
                   System.out.println("The total cost of the window is $ " + total);
         Enter the length of the window in inches
         5
         Enter the width of the window in inches
         8
         The Length of the window is 5.0inches
         The Width of the window is 5.0inches
         The total cost of the window is $ 39.5
    Press any key to continue . . .

    In between he cancels and file is not downloaded to the client's directory.
    Now the counter length should not match with the buffer.length, but it is matching exactly and stating that the file has been downloaded properly.
    I hope you would have understood my problem.
    Also note that I dont have any client side application to monitor the download.
    Please let me know how to solve the problem as soon as possible
    expecting your reply at the earliest thanks.

  • Go to a specific byte in a field ?

    I know how to go to a specific field on a Form by doing go_item. My question is, can I go to a specific byte in the field? Say I want to go to the place in the field where the value entered in it ends. Is there a way to do this?
    Thanks
