How to write all metadata changes to picture files

I created a catalog and started entering keywords and other data prior to learning about the "Automatically write changes into XMP" option in "Edit / Catalog Settings / Metadata".  I then enabled the option because I want all metadata to be stored with the picture.  Now I know that I can select individual pictures, or groups of pictures and use 'Metadata / Save Metadata to File' to update the pictures with all the metadata I entered prior to making the change to the 'Save to XMP' option.  What I want to know is if there is a way to automatically update the necessary files without having to individually select them.  I could try selecting every picture in my 50,000+ picture database and performing an update, but it seems like such a waste of time when there are probably only 500 or so pictures that really need updating.  Is there a way to do this without having to search through the grid view and individually select all of the files that are out of date?
Thanks, Gary

Well, unless I am doing something wrong, it doesn't seem to be automatically saving the older XMP data for me after changing the menu option.  The machine has been left on over night several times and over a couple of weekends with Lightroom running and things still seem to be out of sync.  I am using the brute force approach to copy all metadata in the catalog to the files.  It's going to take a while, but I want to get things back in sync.  I keep several smaller 'Child' catalogs to improve speed performance while annotating and keying pictures.  I also have a'Master' catalog that includes all of the pictures from all of the other catalogs.  I use this catalog when I want to search ALL pictures for a particular keyword.

  • How to write IPTC metadata to files without opening the file?

    HI,
    I'm trying to run a script (preferably in JS) that allows me to write metadata to a file. I can acheive this very easily by opening the file, but I'd need to batch process many large images, so opening them would cause severe slowness. The purpose of adding the metadata to the files is to search upon them in Bridge.
    We're using CS5, but have CS6 if it's better to use.
    My Script
    // set current doc ref
    var docRef = app.activeDocument;
    // Set caption in active document
    docRef.info.caption = "Some Meta-Data";
    Do I need to use bridge to write the metadata without opening the file? Or can running the script in PS allow me to do so?
    Thanks,
    Tom

    Its easy if you use XMP metadata.
    app.activeDocument.info.caption (in photoshop script metadata)
    and it is the same field as:
         Dublin Core namespace
         namespace:     http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/
         Property:          description
    you change description on XMP = you are changing the same image.info.caption

  • How to find all the changes management details (thr DB tables or FMs)

    Hi Experts,
    Could anyone please tell me how to get all the Change management details.
    I mean are there any database tables or FM through which I can get all the Changes Management(CHARM) details.
    like status,priority,texts,descriptions etc...
    I need them for an interface....
    Thanks

    Hi,
    Yet another request to use my crystal ball.
    We had one pc which is having oracle 9i enterprise manager configured(windows 2000) only to connect the db.
    This remembers me of the Gospel of St. Luke, chapter 2, where it is stated,
    'and they found the child in the manger'.
    This resulted a Jewish theologian to remark: 'The manger? Well, so that must have been their own manger'
    So what does 'the' db mean? The Linux one? Or a separate on Win2000?
    It is quite possible to manage a Linux database using OEM on Win2000, with OMS on Win2000.
    'But our server is not having enterprise manager'. Yet another riddle. Which server? There seem to be at least two.
    1 Now if I drop these tables, will I be able to connect to our database using the windows2k pc through Enterprise Manager?
    Yes, but only in standalone mode, and you can't use OEM alerts, and jobs anymore. You would be better off using Sqldeveloper, as OEM Sql worksheet is a nightmare.
    2 That is your decision.
    3
    oemctl ping oms
    will check whether you have an Oracle Management Server running.
    You already seem to have the Enterprise Manager Repository, so you must have OMS running somewhere. (Why install the repository, if you don't use it)

    Have a look at this thread, the last entry has the full code and has everything you need there.
    The answer to knowing how many pages is, you don't need to know!
    You use SL code and no error and no page is opened. Thats the crux of the code.

  • Keywords in Metadata of original pictures files

    I have added a number of keywords to a group of photos. I have not exported them. They are still on my hard drive in the original location that I imported them from. I imported with the option to leave the photos where they were. When I go to look at the photos in that original location the metadata information has not changed - no keywords added.
    The ones I exported do show the metadata. What do I need to do to get the keywords to show in the Metadata without the need to export them?
    Thanks!
    Mary Ellen

    I am absolutely and totally stymied since I thought I understood this. At this point with new pictures taken with a camera, I can read the IPTC data written by Lightroom ONLY in Adobe products. I have like 6 other programs that read metadata and they see nothing that Lightroom writes for THESE PICTURES.
    I now have three classes of images, at least.
    1) Scanned images where I wrote the "capture date" and "digitized date" in EXIF plus some IPTC data with the program exifer. The metadata was imported correctly into Lightroom and still shows in both Lightroom and Exifer, as well as any other metadata viewing program. The metadata that is displayed is that written originally by exifer as well as additional info added in Lightroom.
    I don't seem to be able to reproduce this now. Most of these scanned images do not show the LR metadata outside of Adobe products.
    2) Scanned images where I wrote the capture date and digitized date and maybe no IPTC data, not sure. Exifer finds no IPTC data in these files but Bridge does.
    3) Images from a camera. The metadata in these are only from the camera and Lightroom. Camera metadata is of course visible, but NOTHING shows for IPTC data in any programs except Adobe programs.
    I am very tired of this problem since I spent many many hours on it trying to understand the Lightroom capture date problem with scanned images. Now I'm spending more time because it is clear that Lightroom is doing something that other programs don't understand. Lightroom is clearly writing stuff out. At least sometimes. To add to the confusion, I KNOW that previously to yesterday Lightroom happily wrote out on demand (Metadata/XMP/Export XMP metadata to file), but yesterday I swear I'm not crazy, I couldn't even read such data in Adobe products like Bridge. So I set the default to always write. Sigh, that overwrote every single image in my database (thank goodness I only have about 7000 in now), causing me to have to back them all up last night. But the metadata became visible in Bridge and Photoshop CS2.
    This morning, not believing that Lightroom really doesn't write out on demand, I took a few pictures so these would be absolutely pristine, loaded them in, tagged them, turned off Automatically write changes to XMP in preferences and did Metadata/XMP/Export XMP metadata to file. I saw the little progress bars and sure enough, the information is visible in Bridge. But of course not any of the other exif viewing and editing programs. I have no idea if or why the write metadata on demand did not appear to work yesterday. I'm going to forget I saw that.
    I am now (again) convinced that I can write metadata out with Lightroom. Whether I can read it later is another question. Lightroom seems to be fairly forgiving as to metadata and will accept what I write in other programs. (Except for dates, which is definitely screwed up and it won't even properly accept some dates written in Elements. But that's a whole 'nother 12 threads in this forum!)
    I did one more test. I wrote some IPTC metadata with Bridge into an otherwise pristine camera photo. Lightroom can read it, of course. So can my other metadata reading and editing programs. So Bridge writes IPTC metadata that is readable by other programs.
    Depressing and interesting is the fact that when I write additional IPTC information to this image in Lightroom, only Bridge and Photoshop can see the LR written info. The other programs can still see what Bridge wrote, but nothing that LR writes shows up.
    When you EXPORT the files, the metadata is written so other programs can read it. ARGHHH!
    This is pretty depressing news. I see metadata as very important -- to me the most important thing I want Lightroom to do for me, the reason I bought it. I was previously convinced that it was being written out properly, but all of my previous tests were apparently scanned images and not that thorough even with those. I only resorted to writing metadata outside of LR because of LR's deficiencies. But I failed to recognize the additional Lightroom metadata problems. Actually, I did see other problems earlier but somehow convinced myself that the other programs had a cache or whatever.

  • How to read XMP metadata of an indd file using Actionscript

    Hi All,
    I am trying to read XMP metadata of an indd file using CS Extension Builder in Flash Builder 4.5.
    The documentation has many class like XMPmeta, XMPStruct, etc.
    I have got the currently opened document in InDesign as follows:
    var myDoc:Document = InDesign.app.activeDocument();
    And a new XMPmeta object is created as follows:
    var myXMP:XMPMeta = new XMPMeta();
    How to initialize document's xmp metadata in the XMPMeta object? Or is there any other way to get the XMP metadata of currently opened document in InDesign?

    I have found that the XMP data of an InDesign document can be retrieved in actionscript as follows:
    InDesign.app.activeDocument.metadataPreferences
    This returns the MetadataPreference object.
    But I am not able to iterate each namespace in the xmp. There isn't any XMPFile class which allows me to serialize the object to xml file so that I can iterate all elements in the XMP.
    I could not relate class like XMPMeta, XMPProp, etc. with the MetaDataPreference class. So, how to obtain the entire xmp packet from the MetadataPreference object?
    Can anyone shed light on this?

  • How to write & search array data in a file

    hi
    Can anyone give me an idea about writing an array into a file by placing
    each array element in a line and how to search an array element
    from that file.
    Thanks in advance

    Well, you can serialize any object - and of course re-read it.
    See http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/java/io/ObjectOutputStream.html for an example.
    The easiest way would be to create an encapsulating object, which you then fill with any data you want to serialize. For example:
    class mySerializableContainer implements Serializable{
       public int[][] myArray;
       public String name;
    }All you have to do, is to make sure that every attribute you want to serialize also includes the Serializable interface.
    So, you don't write one Array after another in your file, but only one object - but make this object as flexible as you need to.

  • How can I embed metadata in a pdf file using Acrobat XI Pro?

    Hi, everyone!
    I need some info how I can put things like key words, description of the file and the like permanently in the file to let it 'travel' in the file everywhere, no matter what the OS is. I guess I should use Properties 'path' but it resembles Windows system properties, so I'm not sure. Moreover, there's so little about it in manuals....
    Once I've done with it, can it be read just by Adobe Reader?
    And one important thing more: is there any inner search engine inside Acrobat XI to search the files by key words and other similar metadata criteria or I'm solely dependant on the OS search function?

    Thanks for the link - it sounds highly specialised, but simple experiments of opening a Properties Windows and putting some description notes and author or key word is readable by Acrobat reader or the system search engine so maybe it's not really complicated - mind you, I don't mean right-clicking on the file where options are poor and probably thode of the OS but Preferences edition after opening the document in Acrobat XI Pro - I hope this one is of Adobe and maybe I won't need Bridge to read it I know in the suggested thread it's a problem of graphics metadata within the pdf file....

  • How can I export metadata to a csv file in CS4?

    Help please, I used Workflow Automation Scripts on CS3 but it doesn't seem to work on CS4.

    OK,
    after combing through these posts and trying various 'solutions' I have found that the Barred Rock export metadata script is the only one I have been able to get to work in CS4, kinda. It is a superior script to the original workflow automation script that edo75 refers to, as it does not seem to have the comma issue encountered by jesse and others, where if there are any commas in your metadata it creates a new column and your excel file becomes nonsensical and disorganized. There is a way to avoid this by the way, simply by opening a new file in excel and importing the csv file as text, you then tell excel to read the data the right way by selecting various delimiter combinations. It is not a perfect solution but I have found that by doing this it places most of my metadata in the proper columns, and I end up doing a minimal amount of editing. The barred rock version, which I assume is a modified version of the original script available from adobe as the interface is exactly the same, does not seem to have this issue with commas at all, I am unsure why. If B. Stucky is still reading these posts he may be able to answer, as I think he wrote this script?
    Anyhow I was able to get the script to load in CS4 and then I had to tweek the script to recognize my custom metadata schema, which I was able to do. Now however there is an issue with it recognizing the actual metadata in the image files. I suspect it is a mynamespace issue, that is, I do not have the right path for it to locate the actual metadata for export.
    here is where I suspect the problem lay, where this "http://NPSAlaskaImageStandard" is incorrect.
    new MdNs.MetadataNamespace( "NPS Alaska Image Standard", "http://NPSAlaskaImageStandard", "NPSAlaskaImageStandard" );
    I am a total novice with this stuff so this may not be it at all, however this is my best guess, anyone know the answer?

  • How to write list values to a text file?

    Hi. Does anyone know how to write values stored in a List to a text file? I have a program that asks the user to enter a name and stores it in a list. The number of names in the list depends on how many times the user wants to enter a name. The problem is that my writeToFile method, which handles writing values to a text file, only writes one name and overwrites any previous names. How could I fix this so that it goes thru the list and writes every value to the file? Any hints would be appreciated!

    public void anotherName(List a)throws IOException
    System.out.println("Enter another name? (Y or N)");
    answer = (char)System.in.read();
    System.in.skip(2);
    while(answer == 'Y' || answer == 'y')
    inputName(a);
    System.out.println("Enter another name? (Y or N)");
    answer = (char)System.in.read();
    System.in.skip(2);
    if (answer == 'N' || answer == 'n')
    System.out.println("Ok. GoodBye");
    writeToFile(a);
    //prompts user to input names
    public void inputName(List a) throws IOException
    System.out.print("Enter a name: ");
    name = input.readLine();
    a.add(name);
    public void writeToFile(List a)throws IOException
    PrintWriter output = new PrintWriter(new FileWriter("names.txt"));
    output.print(name); //Problem area - handles only one line of input, overwrites previous input
    output.close();

    System.out is an instance of PrintStream (check the API documents for the System class to see this).
    So the easiest way to convert from a "print to screen" class to a "print to file" class is to acquire a PrintStream that prints to a file, and use it exactly the same as you'd have used System.out...
    So start with your console code...
            PrintStream out = System.out;
            for(int i = 0; i <10; i++){
                out.println("Number " +i);
            }Then you adapt to file code:
            FileOutputStream fos = new FileOutputStream("temp.txt");
            PrintStream out = new PrintStream(fos);
            for(int i = 0; i <10; i++){
                out.println("Number " +i);
            out.flush();
            out.close();Note that we flush the stream because for reasons of efficiency files aren't necessarily written to disk until you explicitly ask the system to do so (memory is fast, disks are slow, that's why).
    Closing the stream releases system resources associated with it.
    Actually, that's redundant, because close calls flush automatically, but I left it in for clarity.
    Any use ?

    I am new to ESB technology. I have created one ESB application to invoke a java web service(Which will return string as result) and to write retrieved result in to a file. To achieve it i have created the file adapter using user defined schema. It was working fine. But, I got the modifications in my requirement to store the returned result(String value) in to a text file without any user defined schema. So i used native format for FileAdapter and mapped the returnedResponse(String value) to opaque:opaqueElement. But i am facing relationship error.
    anybody can help me to solve this issue?.. is there any method to convert a string value to opaqueElement..
    Thanks in advance..

    If you are not able to access a VI front panel at all when another VI is called by the first VI, then probably the issue is that the VI properties is set to be Modal. Right click on the VI icon on the right top corner and select VI Properties. Under Window Appearance, you can click on Customise button and ensure the VI is not Modal (and Custom is selected). Before this, you need to ensure the calling VIs are also not set to Modal (I think if you set it to dialog, it will be Modal by def. So don't use that as well). If any of the parent VI is set to Modal and a subsequent child VI is in non-modal mode, then you will not be able to access the child VI front panel when called and may end up with forcing the program to close.
    Probably you may also need to have a different independant loop looking for the events. For this you may need to use Q structure as well, so that you can define a Q outside both loops, add elements to Q as and when the menu is selected within the loop for menu events, while the other loop works according to the Q elements it gets to remove.
    Hope that helps !

  • How to write to the end of a file

    i am tryign to write to the end of a file using bufferwriter and bufferreadear. I am trying to the read the file until i reach the end and then write in the end. I have some code but i dont know how to read until the end of the file.
    File file = new  File ("Product.txt");
              FileReader reader = new FileReader (file);
              BufferedReader readBuff = new BufferedReader (reader);
              FileWriter write = new FileWriter(file);
              BufferedWriter writeBuff = new BufferedWriter(write);
              String line = readBuff.readLine();
    // i know i need to put a while loop somewhere around here

    I want to write to the end of the file, what do you mean when you say "then write() until you've written that many bytes, which will overwrite the bytes already in the file."
              File file = new  File ("Products.txt");
              FileReader reader = new FileReader (file);
              BufferedReader readBuff = new BufferedReader (reader);
              FileWriter write = new FileWriter(file);
              BufferedWriter writeBuff = new BufferedWriter(write);
              String line = readBuff.readLine();
              long fileSize = file.length();
              readBuff.close();
              writeBuff.close();
              } catch (IOException e){
                   System.out.println ("Error -- " + e.toString());
         }
