How would you use an IF or an OR to test two cells before an either/or answ

I have a Numbers worksheet, and want to check as follows:
If L8 is blank
or
If M8 is blank
Leave this cell blank
Otherwise, L8-M8
The following attempts do not work:
=OR(isblank(f8), OR(isblank(l8), “”,q8-k8)
=IF(f8&l8=””,””,q8-k8)
The Formulas and Functions guide does not seem to help me.
Has anyone successfully figured out something like this. I can do it in Excel, but am quite new to Numbers.

Certainly less intuitive than it should be to get to a list of functions and their syntax.

Your first example is very close to correct:
=OR(isblank(f8), OR(isblank(l8), “”,q8-k8)
=IF(OR(isblank(f8),isblank(l8)),“”,q8-k8)
Your second is ingenious, and at first glance should work if the concatenate operator (&) produces a null result from joining two empty cells. Not something I've ever tried.
Since you want the subtraction only if both cells contain numbers, the following should also give the desired result:
IF(AND(ISNUMBER(F8),ISNUMBER(L8)),Q8-K8,"")

    Now that A3 has the ability to use Labels & Flags, I'm trying to incorporate their use into my workflow but am struggling to find the most effective way.
    I've used the star rating for selections & refining the selections. In A2 I used keywords on images to indicate actions on the images, however I never thought this was an elegant solution because unless I forget to remove them they stay with the images as I export them. Fundamentally though I think of Keywords as attributes of the image, so using keywords to describe actions was always strange.
    One thing I liked with this workflow though was I could place multiple "actions" on an image since there can be any number of keywords. In A3 you can only assign one labe at a time. So this made me think of how I'd use Labels.
    So thus my question: how would you incorporate labels & flags into your existing workflows consisting of star ratings & keywords?

    I've wanted flags for a long time just to be able to mark where I left off on a project. My inelegant solution has been to give a terrible picture 5 stars. Other uses are to quickly get back to certain images.
    I don't yet know how exactly I'll use labels or what other uses I'll have for flags, but I'm happy to have the added versatility. Between flags and labels, I have 8 new ways to mark and filter images. (10 if you count no flag and no label.) Sure one can do a lot with stars, stacks and keywords, but now one can do more.

  • How would you use these Apple devices to create the best network?

    I have the following devices and want to create the best network for my 3 story home:
    Time Capsule 3GB, latest generation (needs to be located on middle floor in a corner room by the Comcast modem)
    Time Capsule late 2009
    Airport Express 2010
    More data, the devices that connect to this network:
    New MacBook pro (in same room with new Time Capsule)
    New iMac (in same room with Time Capsule)
    2009 iMac (on second floor)
    Iphone 5 and 5s
    ipad Minis
    ipad Airs
    Apple TV second generation
    I've done some testing and the signal is pretty good on the second floor (meaning that the download speeds on the second floor iMac are the same as those in the same room with the new Time Capsule).  But the upstairs bedrooms have speeds cut by 50%.
    There is no reasonable way to connect the new Time Capsule by ethernet to any other devices.
    Would it be helpful to extend the wireless network "wirelessly" with the old Time Capsule in an area upstairs with strong signal?  Would the old TC then "re-pump" the signal into the bedrooms which don't have line of sight with the new TC?
    How would I best do this?

    So, the old Time Capsule and AirPort Express are near the new Time Capsule and connected to it with an Ethernet cable.....or are the old Time Capsule and Express not even in use at all?

    While it would be better if you could connect the old Time Capsule to the new Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet connection, the old Time Capsule might help things out a bit in the bedroom area if it is located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the new Time Capsule.
    This is one of those situations where performance cannot be predicted and you simply have to try it out in your home to see how well it will work. It could not hurt to use the old TC to extend the signal wirelessly to the bedroom area, if you want to give that a try.
    You did not mention the AirPort Express, but it could possibly be located downstairs if you need more wireless signal coverage in a given area. The trick again, is to find a location where the Express can both receive a strong wireless signal and also provide additional wireless coverage.
    Setting up the old Time Capsule or Express will only take a few minutes if you want to give things a try. Post back if you need more details on "how" to do this.

  • Cssmill - how do you use it?

    Looking at cssmill for the first time, and i'm trying to figure out some things...
    1) how would you use cssmill to create the default - out-of-the-box stylesheets? The ones that are deployed after install don't have any 508 styles, but they are generated by cssmill. You would have to edit the template files to exclude these styles.
    (edit, i see now that removing the d_ styles is done by the make_508_css task, but its erroring out on my machine)
    2) out of the box css has no comments. cssmill includes all comments. run them though a css compressor first?
    3) make_portal_css. is this a relic from yesteryear? why would the portal ever use mainstyle-en.css instead of mainstyleX-en.css?
    Is it worth trying to make changes to template files or just edit the resulting CSS manually?
    I'm thinking this should be my methodology:
    1) Create custom color.propertiles file(s) that make sense for my organization
    2) Generate css file
    3) paste all my custom stuff at the top
    I'd really love to get away from using cssmill completely but not sure if its possible.

    upon closer inspection, it looks liek the make_508_task is failing (silently) wtih the error: "The requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped section open". this is what removes the comments and d_ lines

    I'm testing out a new way to do the stylesheets....let me know if you guys have any ideas or concerns...
    so i generate the stylesheets using cssmill...but then i rename them to mainstyleXX-en-orig.css
    then I create a custom stylesheet, wtih all of our custom styles (we override a lot of stuff...)
    then, i add @import statements at the top of that css class for the orig...
    so my stylesheet looks liek this:
    @import "mainstyleXX-en-orig.css";
    @import "analytics.css";
    html { height:100%; }
    body { font-family:arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size:12px; line-height:1.4em;  color:#333333; margin:0px; padding:0px; height:100%;}

  • How would you determine the total ram used by applets?

    hi guys;
    I have 2 applets.
    One applet runs in a browswer. - in the microsoft jvm.
    Another applet on another browser (or another page) - in the sun plugin.
    How would you guys determine the total RAM (not just heap memory) used by these applets.
    my strategy would be to open up the browser. and look at the memory next to that internet explorer process. Then I would open up another browser with applet and see total memory taken. Then I would subtract to determine the difference.
    Does this sound correct?
    Each applet has multiple jar files associated with it.

    What you really should do is test your applet on a bunch of machines, like a 32 meg ram win 98, 64 meg ram win NT, and a 256 meg ram win 2000, and then give them a performance report under the different configurations. That's really what they're after (probably)

  • VI Analyzer - How Would You Configure It for This Use Case?

    My group has different people working on different LVPROJs for each software deliverable we have. Each LVPROJ uses our user.libs and instr.libs, as well as an overall "framework" that is the same for most LVPROJs.
    I really think the VI Analyzer toolkit would be powerful for code reviews, but only if I can configure it in a way where which tests I run and what the criteria are can be saved and used on any project. I can't seem to get this to work for me. I want to save all those configurations, and use it on new LVPROJs easily - the easier I can make this process, the more inclined others will be to use this for code review. How would you do it? (if it's even feasible)

    I suggest creating a .cfg file without a project linkage, but with all the tests selected and configured as you want...so a .cfg file with no "Items to Analyze" specified. Then, when working on an individual project, open that CFG file, add the project's top-level folder to the analysis, then save that CFG file with that project. This means you can't have the project linkage in your CFG file, but assuming your project is all within some top-level folder, that shouldn't be much of an issue, since the CFG file will be "linked" at that point to the top-level folder containing your project.

    We have three users in the house, each with their own Apple ID, using multiple mac/PC devices.  Can we and how would we use Home Sharing to share music, apps, etc? 

    Do you have a computer. You can't share music or apps from one mobile device to another. To share photos you need to use photo stream shared albums.

    As Christopher says, it's a compilation. Different tracks are by different artists.
    Setting the *Album Artist* field to *Various Artists* and setting *Part of a compilation* to Yes should be all that is required. Depending on your *Group compilations when browsing* setting ( I recommend On ) either should suffice but I suggest doing both.
    Based on your commentary, I selected all the "O Brother" tracks, and checked the boxes for everything line that was blank in the Info and the Sort panes. Only exceptions were the album name and the disc number 1 of 1 and the artwork. I blanked and checked anything else.
    That's not what I meant. When you select multiple tracks, only those values which +are already common+ to all tracks are displayed. Typically these will include Artist, though not with compilation albums, Album Artist, Album, No. of Tracks, Genre plus various sort fields. A blank value may indicate that different tracks have different values or it may be that the value is blank for all tracks. For the drop down values on the Options tab the value shown may not reflect the information in every tag. If values you expect to be common, such as Album Artist or the Album title are not displayed you can simply type these in and click OK. This will often be enough to group the album.
    If you place a checkmark against the blank boxes and apply changes then you will clear those fields so you should only do this if that is the effect you want. Putting a checkmark next to an empty (representing different values) *Track No.* box, for example, will just clear the all the track numbers which is very rarely useful.
    Adding then removing extra text is for a specific problem where despite all common values being identical across the tracks of the album iTunes seems to "remember" that it should see two albums. A typical example would be when an album originally listed as *Album CD1* & *Album CD2* is given disc numbers X of Y and then has the Album name changed to Album. I've seen iTunes merge all but one track into the new album, but insist on listing one remaining track separately, despite both albums having the same title. In this case I've found overtyping the album title again has no effect whereas changing it to AlbumX and then back to Album does what I was trying to achieve in the first place.
    Don't forget that even properly organsied albums may still break up if you don't chose an album-friendly view. Sorting on the track name or track number columns can be useful in some circumstances but in general I revert to Album by Artist when browsing through my library.

  • How do you use the bluetooth VIs with a Microsoft Bluetooth Driver?

    How do you use the LabVIEW Bluetooth VIs with the Microsoft Bluetooth driver?  I have been trying with no such luck.
       I want to use 2 computers to talk to each other using the bluetooth VIs.  Eventually, I think we would like a PDA/phone to talk to a custom built electronics board with Bluetooth.  But for now, I would just like 2 computers to talk and then eventually talk to our own device. 
    One is a desktop w/ the Belkin F8T012 USB adapter.  It installs fine with the Belkin driver (but I know I need to use the Microsoft Driver in order to use the LabVIEW VIs, but I have tried to get Windows to install its own but it says it is a BCM92045DG-Flash.  It says it cannot install it because it cannot find the necessary hardware.  I thought this USB adapter was on the approved Bluetooth devices list?  What else should I try?  Another Bluetooth USB adapter? 
    The other computer is a Dell Latitude 820.  It has a built in Bluetooth module which I believe is the Dell 350 Bluetooth Module.  On this machine I have been able to setup a COM port with a bluetooth device (blood glucose meter).  It came with a serial port interface which we modifed to go through a bluetooth interface.  It comes up as COM40. We have been able to communicate to it using their program originally designed to talk through a serial port.  But we would like to use the Bluetooth VIs in LabVIEW.  I can't even use the Discover VI.  Perhaps it is not using the Microsoft Driver as well.  Do I just uninstall the driver and then try to have Windows install its own driver?  Do you have any other recommendations?

    Hi Javi,
    This sounds like an issue with Windows and your specific Bluetooth devices.  As you mentioned, the LV Bluetooth VI's do require that the devices use the Windows drivers.  Take a look at this link for specific requirements for using Bluetooth with LabVIEW.  Also, you can take a look at our Developer Zone tutorial on designing Bluetooth applications a found here.  Regarding your device drivers, sometimes it is as easy as uninstalling the driver and then letting Windows discover the device and fine its own driver.  You could check out the Microsoft Knowledgebase for more information.  Thanks and have a great day!

    I am a complete newbie to JSF coming from Struts 1. My question is how do you use one managed bean from the method of another one? I think this would be a common senario. For example I put a bean in session scope when a user logs in and in a different method within a different bean I want to get some of this user's information. What is the correct way to retireve one bean from a method in another with session scope?
    Also what would the code look like to retieve another bean from the method of a managed bean where the bean you want to retrieve has application scope?
