HOWTO: Declare a variable within a function.

I'm having a hard time declaring a variable within a function. This is my code:
CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION schemaName.functionName (inParam VARCHAR2(20))
RETURN VARCHAR2 IS VARCHAR2(10)
BEGIN
DECLARE paramLength NUMBER; --This is not working. The docs do not state what the size of the number returned by LENGTH is.
SELECT LENGTH(inParam) INTO paramLength FROM DUAL;
IF paramLength < 10 THEN
RETURN '';
ELSE
/* Clean up the value */
RETURN inParam
END IF;
END;

In relation to your own code...
CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION schemaName.functionName (inParam VARCHAR2(20)) RETURN VARCHAR2 IS
paramLength NUMBER;
BEGIN
  /* Clean up the value */
  paramLength = LENGTH(inParam);
  IF paramLength < 10 THEN
    RETURN NULL;
  ELSE
    RETURN inParam
  END IF;
END; You don't need to use SQL to determine the length of a string.

  • Declaring a variable in a function: either the function or the eventListener I'm using doesn't work

    Can anyone help me with this?
    I have a set of Cue Points in an FLV I'm playing. It's an interactive quiz, so the idea is that flash will change a variable, theAnswer, to a different letter depending on which question it is. The answer to question 1 is B, question 2 is D, etc.
    Either the cue point event listener isn't working, or else it is working and Flash isn't declaring the variables. Can someone help?
    The error message I get is:
    1120: Access of undefined property theAnswer.
    I literally can't find a single problem with my code. I have an almost identical Event Listener further down which works.
    var theAnswer;
    vid.addEventListener(MetadataEvent.CUE_POINT, cueAnswers);
    function cueAnswers(e:MetadataEvent):void{
    var cuePointNames = e.info.name;
    if (cuePointNames =="start")
    theAnswer = "C";
    else if (cuePointNames =="q2")
    theAnswer = "A";
    else if (cuePointNames =="q3")
    theAnswer = "C";
    else if (cuePointNames =="q4")
    theAnswer = "A";
    else if (cuePointNames =="q5")
    theAnswer = "D";
    else if (cuePointNames =="q6")
    theAnswer = "C";
    else if (cuePointNames =="q7")
    theAnswer = "A";
    else if (cuePointNames =="q8")
    theAnswer = "D";
    else if (cuePointNames =="q9")
    theAnswer ="B"
    else if (cuePointNames =="q10")
    theAnswer ="B";
    The function is called by this later:
    function nkAinfo(e:MouseEvent):void {
    if (theAnswer=="C")
    trace("You clicked right");
    else
    trace("You clicked wrong");
    What's going on? Is the function not being called or are my variable declarations wrong?

    Probably not the answer to your question, but it could help anyways....
    First there is another command that, to me at least, is much easier to read that a bunch of nested if/if elses. And that is the switch.
    switch (e.info.name){
    case "start":
    theAnswer="C";
    break;
    case "q2":
    theAnswer="A"
    break;
    //and so on
    To me that is easier to maintain and read. But I don't think that is really what you need here. So just file that one away for the future.
    In this case, what I think you need is an array.
    var currentAnswer:String;
    var correctAnswers:Array=new Array();
    correctAnswers["start"]="C"
    correctAnswers["q2"]="A"
    // and so on.
    Then your cuepoint handler function becomes something like this:
    function cueAnswers(e:MetadataEvent):void{
         currentAnswer=correctAnswers[e.info.name];
    And I'm a little confused by your mouse click handler. It would seem to suggest that the answer is always "C"? But I"m guessing that it is supposed to compare what the user clicked on to what the cuePoint has told it is the correct answer? Well if that is the case then it would probably look something like:
    function nkAinfo(e:MouseEvent):void {
    if(e.currentTarget.clickedProperty==currentAnswer){
         trace("Correct");
    } else {
         trace("Incorrect");
    With the way you are currently doing this I'm guessing that you have a bunch of repeated functions for each time there is a mouse click and that your code is a lot more complicated that it needs to be. And that somewhere hiding in all those lines there is an error that would be simple to fix if you could see it.
    What the error is telling you is that somewhere your are trying to assign or retrieve theAnswer and it hasn't been defined yet.

  • Using a global variable within a function

    Hi all,
    I'm trying to learn how to use global variables, but can't quite get it right:
    Im trying to use two buttons, named UpButton and DownButton to control one global variable, p1
    A text field, named "Value" displays p1.
    Here's my code:
    p1 = 0;
    ButtonClick("UpButton", p1, 100,"Value");
    ButtonClick("DownButton", p1,(-100),"Value");
    function ButtonClick(ButtonName,Var,Increment,TextToChange){
                        sym.$(ButtonName).click(function(){
                        Var = Var + Increment;
                        sym.$(TextToChange).html(Var);
    However, it seems to be treating p1 as two different variables.
    Here's a link to the page to show you what I mean, apologies but this link wont work in google chrome because I'm using dropbox as a server temporarily
    In other browsers you may need to click "Show all content" or similar to any security warnings...

    Here are the project files:

    Any help greatly appreciated, sorry if this is a stupid question,
    Katherine

    Hi Katherine,
    However, it seems to be treating p1 as two different variables.
    Indeed, your code created two different variables in two different scopes (I guess it as to do with JavaScript closures, but do  not ask me more, I am still a bit foggy about that idiosyncrasy ).
    In JavaScript, a primitive parameter – this is the case here with p1, a Number value –, is passed by value. In other words, a copy of the value is made. Your code handles two copies of the value stored in p1.
    This contrasts with an object parameter, which is passed by reference (address in memory), without copy. Your code would work if Numbers were passed by reference : the two Var (p1) would then point to the same address.
    The intent behind your trial is a global variable.
    1) Let us be as simple as possible :
    Stage : document.compositionReady event handler
    p1 = 0;
    buttonClick = function( Increment)
      p1 += Increment;
      sym.$( "Value").html( p1);
    Stage : DownButton.click event handler
    buttonClick(-100);
    Stage : UpButton.click event handler
    buttonClick(100);
    Without being preceded by the var keyword the variables are global.
    So the Number variable p1 can be accessed inside function buttonClick.
    And the Function variable buttonClick as well, is accessible inside click event handlers, everything (function definition +function calls) being inside the same symbol (Stage).
    2) Now, suppose this is no longer the case : you want to access a variable from another symbol.
    We create a new GraySquare symbol, instantiated both in the DownButton symbol (instance name DownSquare) and in the UpButton symbol (instance name DownSquare).
    Stage : document.compositionReady event handler
    p1 = 0;
    sym.buttonClick = function( Increment)
      p1 += Increment;
      sym.$( "Value").html( p1);
    The sym. prefix is now necessary to make the variable (here a Function, but you would proceed exactly the same with a String, Number or Boolean) accessible in other symbols.
    DownButton symbol : DownSquare.click event handler
    sym.getComposition().getStage().buttonClick( -100);
    UpButton symbol : UpSquare.click event handler
    sym.getComposition().getStage().buttonClick( 100);
    From these other symbols, the sym.getComposition().getStage(). prefix is necessary to acces to our global variable (function).

  • FUNCTION Variable within Data Template

    Hi Im calling a function within my sql and i want to use the result as a bind variable.... here goes...
    Data Template...... XML
    <sqlStatement name="Q1">
    <![CDATA[select function_name(ppp.id) the_main_one,
    :the_main_one + 10 new_value
    from per_ppp]]>
    </sqlStatement>
    I get null value .... but from the_main_one i get a value..... any ideas... i checked for number and nvl(,0) and all that no luck
    is there a grouping thing involved here... where as i need to call the function from within another sql statement...

    It can be done.
    Step 1: Setup package.
    Step 2: Create a global variable for your function value
    Step 3: Before the calling function returns the value, set a global variable (placeholder)
    Step 4: Create a new function that returns the global variable, make sure it's after the first function call. Returning the value you might want to reset the global variable to null....
    Your good to go.

    The setc() example works, but a bit ugly: look at the two 3's...
    My ideal solution would be, something like `declare_global -A b_$n` in setb()
    Any ideas?

    with current bash versions, i don't think it is possible to declare global associative arrays in functions.
    what you are after is the "-g" option of typeset which is available in zsh.
    i think i read somewhere that something similar may be planned for bash 4.2.

  • Syntax for declaring global variable in report

    Hello all,
    Kindly let me know syntax for declaring global variable in report?
    Thnks,
    SUnny

    Hi Sunny,
    All data declaration in the main program is global.
    Only if you do some data declaration withtin the subroutines then the scope of the variable is limited to that FORM ....ENDFORM.
    As you read in the above reply for a global variable in FM you need to declare in the top include.
    This means that you want this variable to be made available to all the Function Modules in that Function Group.
    If you want to make the variabe be available only within that FM then do the declaration in the source code itself.
    hope this explaination helps,
    Taher.

  • Is it possible to circumvent error message within a function module?

    Hello friends,
    Is it possible to circumvent error message generation from within a function module? My program calls a FM (namely FKK_S_CADOCUMENT_WRITEOFF) to do some updates. However, in certain cases this FM throws error messages and terminates the whole process. I cannot control the aftermath because it never gets back to the calling program.It stops at the FM level and not at my program level.
    In essence, what I would like to do is to let the FM do its thing, generate some kind of exception (but no error message), come back to the calling program, and then I can capture the status in my program and do what is necessary from then on.
    Your help is greatly appreciated

    Hi,
    Do not use Excerption Tab.
    Instead declare a variable or Structure at export parameter.
    Which will return you error Description or Status of the FM.
    For Example.
    Goto Se37 ---> key in FM name of yours.
    Go to Table tab
    At Parameter Name Column key in RETURN, Type as LIKE and Associate type as BAPIRET2.

  • Declare bind variables

    Hi All,
    I have one application(Java) in which the front end sends a list of values to backend(Oracle). The issue is i dont know how many number of parameters(values) would be there, it depends all on front end. But i want these values in my backend processing and want to use them as bind variables, so that i can build dynamic sqls and make dynamic calls.
    Is there any way that i can declare all the values what i get from front end as bind variables so that they would be available for that user session and the backend can directly refer them as a normal variable, without referring to any other object.
    Thanks in advance.

    Dear,
    Thanks for your answer, but the problem here is how to declare those variables ? if i declare them in a store procedure they would be local to that procedure and wont be available as bind variables.No.
    When using PL/SQL (static SQL) you will never encounter issues related to bind variables. PL/SQL itself takes care of yourcode and uses bind variables behind the scene.
    So, if you declare your variables inside a stored procedure, they will be automatically considered as bind variables. You don't have to care about. This is how PL/SQL (static SQL) works.
    The only situation where you have to look carefully to the use of bind variable within PL/SQL is when you use Dynamic sql into stored procedures or functions (this is in fact another reason to avoid using dynamic SQL).
    However, you need take care of the application which is calling your stored procedure. This calling application should call your stored procedure using input parameters as bind variables.
    Otherwise, the library cache of your shared pool will be full of calls to your stored procedure.
    Put it simply,
    (a) do what you want inside your PL/SQL strored procedure (static SQL and not Dynamic SQL)
    (b) call your stored procedure using bind variables
    Hope this helps

  • How can I transfer a variable to regexp_replace function

    Hi,
    In addition to my question from yesterday, I went up one (little) level for the next question.
    How can I transfer a variable to regexp_replace function?
    I am getting the value of the variables from from APEX Items.
    The value of item :P105_OLD_NAME should be replaced with the value from :P105_NAME APEX item.
    The projects in PROJECT_NAME field are separated by “:”
    select * from infoux_proj;
    HOSTNAME PROJECT_NAME
    host1 proj2:proj1
    host3 proj1
    host4 proj12:proj1
    host5 proj3
    host2 proj1:proj3:sunproj1
    this is my code:
    declare
    v_old_proj_list varchar(100);
    v_new_proj_list varchar(100);
    begin
    for host in (select a.hostname, project_name
    from infoux_proj a,
    (select hostname
    from PROJECT_NAMES_WITH_HOSTNAMES
    where name = :P105_OLD_NAME ) b
    where a.HOSTNAME=b.hostname)
    loop
    select project_name ,
    regexp_replace(project_name,'(^|:)(:P105_OLD_NAME)(:|$)','\1:P105_NAME \3') new_project
    into v_old_proj_list, v_new_proj_list

    update infoux_proj
    set project_name=v_new_proj_list
    where hostname=host.hostname;
    end loop;
    end;
    Thanks,
    Sheli

    Hi, Sheli
    Inside quotes, :p105_old_name will not be taken as a variable name. If you want to use the value of :p105_old_name in a string which its otherwise a literal, then you can concatenate the variable to the literal parts, using the || operator.
    You can do soemthing like this:
    REGEXP_REPLACE ( project_name
                , '(^|:)(' || :P105_OLD_NAME
                             || ')(:|$)'
                , '\1'       || :P105_NAME
                             || ' \3'
                )               AS new_projectI'll bet there's a much simpler way to do what you want. Instead of having two SELECTs, a cursor FOR loop and an UPDATE, you can probably do what you need to with just a single UPDATE or MERGE. It would be more efficient, too. If you'd like help, post CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements for all relevant tables and columns azs the exist before this code is run, a couple of sets of values for the bind variables, and the results you'd like to see (that is, the contents of the changed table) for each set, given the same sample data.
    Always say which version of Oracle you're using.

    What do you mean by "I have tried defining the variable both as 'integer' type and 'numeric' type"?
    Like Max said, you should post a complete script that gets the incorrect results.
    Include your CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements, or use tables that are commonly available.
    For example:

  • Access session variable in Java Function in JSP

    Hi Experts !!
    I am developing an application using STRUTS MVC...
    Very sorry if u have problem understanding my question, i ll try to improve... and sorry if i can't post codes here
    Basic question is ....
    I want to open a word document on pageLoad of JSP, the word document is not a single document, there is a form in which there is a "name" and "template" whenever user clicks on a button there is one action attached to it which creates a copy of that template in a different folder.. on the next page OnLoad i want to open that particular document. for that i have created a variable and also have set in the session, just want to access it in the below code.
    I have a formbean in which i have a variable, the scope is session, that variable i have put it in session also. but i want to access that variable in a "java function" in JSP so that "onLoad" page that function should work.
    JSP---
    <script type="text/javascript">
    function openDocument() {
    var w = new ActiveXObject("Word.Application");
    var docText;
    var obj;
    var a;
    if (w != null) {
    w.Visible = true;
    obj = w.Documents.Open(I HAVE TO ACCESS THAT VARIABLE HERE);
    </script>
    FORMBEAN----
    public class CreateSOWFormBean extends ActionForm {
    private String workflowName;
    private String comment;
    private String sowTemplate;
    private String sowFileCreated;
    public String getSowFileCreated() {
    return sowFileCreated;
    public void setSowFileCreated(String sowFileCreated) {
    this.sowFileCreated = sowFileCreated;
    sowFileCreated is the variable that i have accessed in session and that value i have to pass in that function in JSP....
    I am aware of something like
    obj = w.Documents.Open(<%'sowFileCreated'%>);
    but i m not sure how to write....
    Plz help.....

    If you're working under a framework like struts you should definitely be using JSTL tags rather than scriptlet code to access variables within the page. With JSTL code <% codes can be almost entirely avoided.
    To transfer a value from a Servlet to a JSP don't use a session variable, use a request attribute. Session variables should only be used when values have to survive from one transaction to another.
    You can write something like:
    obj = w.Documents.open('<c:out value="${openURL}"/>');in the Javascript portion of your JSP.
    Just beware of potential problems with quotes. The coresponding code in the Servlet would be like:
    request.setAttribute("openURL", openUrl);

  • Insert values in an array (within a function)

    Hello,
    I can't seem to get values insert in an array. I know it
    works outsite the function but
    when using variables in a function and trying to insert this
    in an array it does not work.
    The values are empty.
    But if you uncomment the line someArray.push(a0,a1,a2) and
    uncommend the for loop it works.
    In actionscript 2.0 i could use eval ..but in actionscript
    3.0 you have to use this to convert a string to a value.
    Does anyone see, what i am doing wrong?
    function doSomething() {
    var a0:String = "hello";
    var a1:String = "why doesn't it";
    var a2:String = "work!";
    var someArray:Array = new Array();
    //someArray.push(a0,a1,a2);
    for (var i:uint =0; i<=3; i++) {
    someArray.push(this["a"+i]);
    trace(someArray);
    doSomething();

    In this case, the problem arises from a scope issue. The vars
    are defined within the function so they are visible only within the
    function. When you use "this" you are referencing the object that
    contains the function, which cannot see those vars (they do not
    exist for "this", only for the function). It works if you go this
    way...
    var a0:String = "hello";
    var a1:String = "why doesn't it";
    var a2:String = "work!";
    function doSomething() {
    var someArray:Array = new Array();
    for (var i:uint=0; i<3; i++) {
    someArray.push(this["a"+i]);
    trace(someArray);
    doSomething();
    The other line: someArray.push(a0,a1,a2);
    does work because it is within the function and can see the
    vars.

  • How to get result of HTTPService within a function?

    Hello all,
    I'm trying to call an HTTPService's send() and get the
    resulting data from within a function, and assigning it locally.
    Specifically, this is what I want:
    private function getData():void {
    myRPC.send();
    //How do I set the result of myRPC.send to a variable here?
    // Neither myRPC.send().result, nor myRPC.lastResult works! I
    get null both times!
    // But if I set myRPC.result to a separate function that
    handles an event, I get the correct data...but not what I want.
    var myObject:Object = ???? myRPC.???
    <mx:HTTPService result="???" fault="???" id="myRPC"
    method="GET" resultFormat="e4x" url="someurl" useProxy="false">
    <mx:request xmlns="">
    <somedata>hi</somedata>
    </mx:request>
    </mx:HTTPService>
    I am also not sure what to put in 'result' and 'fault' since
    I don't want the result/fault to be passed to another
    function...could anyone explain this please? Thanks!
