Howto: KMS on Nvidia hardware.

The Fedora 11 Beta has it, so why cant we?  Well you can too, and it's not very hard either! I have to warn you though, I am unable to get Xorg to run while modesetting is enabled,  My card is an 8400M GS, but you may have more luck than me,
The basic idea is that you just need to modify the nouveau-drm package to pull from the "modesetting-gem" git branch rather than master.  The reason this is not already done is, of course, because of the Arch Way.  Once modesetting gets merged into the master branch, this will no longer be necessary.
Step 1: Get the stock PKGBUILD 'n stuff.  The fastest way is to just use abs:
abs extra/nouveau-drm
cp /var/abs/extra/nouveau-drm -r .
Step 2: Modify PKGBUILD.  You can use the one provided here or just modify the stock one.  The main (actually, only) differences are that the pre-made arch linux source tarball isn't needed and instead we pull the source directly from the freedesktop.org drm git repository, and then checkout the modesetting-gem branch. The PKGBUILD provided could be better, but it works well enough.
pkgname=nouveau-drm
pkgver=20090528
_gitdate=20090528
pkgrel=1
pkgdesc="nvidia opensource X driver"
arch=('i686' 'x86_64')
url="http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/"
makedepends=('git' 'autoconf' 'pkgconfig')
depends=("kernel26>=2.6.29" "kernel26<2.6.30" 'udev>=141' 'cairo')
install=${pkgname}.install
license=('GPL')
source=(dont_check_for_pthread.patch)
md5sums=('237f3cdb1bfc5c62bfa7b038b7a20b2a')
build() {
# get git code
cd ${srcdir}
git clone -v git://anongit.freedesktop.org/git/mesa/drm/
cd drm
git checkout --track origin/modesetting-gem
# git archive --prefix=mesa-drm-${_gitdate}/ --format=tar HEAD | bzip2 > ../../mesa-drm-${_gitdate}.tar.bz2
# return 1
# build the drm kernel module
# make sure the system kernel doesn't have "drm" set to "yes",
# default Arch kernel26 has it as module drm.ko, make sure it's not loaded
# cd ${srcdir}/mesa-drm-${_gitdate}
patch -Np0 -i ${srcdir}/dont_check_for_pthread.patch || return 1
./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr # --enable-udev --disable-option-checking
cd linux-core
make DRM_MODULES="nouveau" || return 1
install -D -m 0644 drm.ko ${pkgdir}/lib/modules/`uname -r`/updates/drm.ko || return 1
install -D -m 0644 nouveau.ko ${pkgdir}/lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/video/nouveau.ko || return 1
install -D -m 0644 ../shared-core/nouveau_drm.h ${pkgdir}/usr/include/nouveau_drm.h || return 1
Step 3: Build, Install, and Insert.  This new kernel module now has the modeset parameter, just like the Intel module, Yay!  And you should make sure to unload any nvidia or other video drivers using the card before attempting to modprobe the nouveau kernel module in order to avoid very bad things.
makepkg -s
pacman -U nouveau-drm-*.pkg.tar.gz
modprobe nouveau modeset=1
As soon as you insert the new modesetting module, your console resolution will switch to the native resolution of your display and you are all ready to go!  Adding the new module to your initrd or grub entry should roughly follow the same steps as with the intel drivers.

maybe i'm just too lazy to see the problem, but when i use the PKGBUILD you posted above, i get:

  • Compositing in KDE sometimes doesn't work on Nvidia hardware

    I tried searching whether similar issue was already discussed on the forums, but didn't find anything; sorry if I missed it.
    I have two different systems with Nvidia hardware, one with a 9500M GS, and another one with a GTX 580. After updating to KDE 4.11 (as far as I remember, this issue started appearing at about that time; now it still happens with KDE 4.12) compositing in KDE sometimes doesn't work. By "sometimes" I mean that once in a while I boot the computer and compositing isn't working, then I reboot and everything is fine. Sometimes hitting Alt+Shift+F12 twice helps, but sometimes it doesn't. I didn't gather statistics, but it seems to happen on the 9500M GS system more often than on the GTX580 one. On the former it happens once in about three boots, while on the latter it's something like once per ten boots, but I may be wrong.
    I use proprietary driver, since I sometimes use the computer for gaming, and the opensource driver is still not quite up to the task. Btw, games work fine even when compositing doesn't work.
    I haven't noticed any similar issue on my other machine with Intel graphics.
    If anyone could help in identifying the cause, I would be much obliged, because I have no idea where to start searching.

    Good guess but even if I miss the word or any text, in normal use it still brings up the menu (with options limited to 'zoom in' and 'zoom out'). When I'm not getting the menu for word correction I'm not getting any menu in the body of the document at all - it's strange!

  • KMS on Nvidia cards via Nouveau drivers

    So, Fedora 11 is enabling KMS on Nvidia video cards via the open-source Nouveau video drivers: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/ … odesetting
    I've spent quite a while trying to get it to work myself, but have gotten nowhere.  Has anyone else gotten it to work?

  • 32-bit Linux flash 10.3.181.34 nvidia hardware acceleration chroot

    Hi,
    I'm trying to run flash in a chroot in a 32-bit debian linux enviroment (the host is also a 32-bit debian system). I'm running the nvidia proprietary drivers and am able to get iceweasel (the debian rebranded firefox) to run flash with hardware acceleration outside the chroot. At first I could only get the chroot to run flash with software decoding/rendering however i bound the /dev/ directory to the chroot and was informed that flash was running with software rendering but hardware decoding. I was wondering if anyone knew the other pre-requisites for getting flash to run with hardware accelerated rendering inside a chroot.
    Thanks,
    Allan

    There are no 64-bit Flash Players from Adobe released yet. But that does nog have to be an issue for you, you only need to have a 64-bit Flash Player if you have a 64-bit browser. If you do have a 64-bit browser and not a 32-bit browser you could the beta 64-bit player that is currently in beta: http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer11.html
    The usual warnings to using beta software apply. If you try the beta player and have issues with it make sure you report them in the Flash Player 11 forum or directly in the bugtracker if you are familiar with reporting bugs in a software development environment.

  • Nvidia driver with KMS and fbset?

    I read several wiki articles and wanted to try KMS with my nvidia driver so I renamed /etc/X11/xorg.conf to something else and rebooted.  My terminal seems to be running in a rather low resolution.  When I query with fbset, I get:
    $ fbset
    open /dev/fb0: No such file or directory
    Are KMS and nvidia incompatible at this point in time or is there something I'm not setting up properly?

    jskier wrote:
    karol wrote:What do you want, graysky? High resolution - use 'vga=' on the kernel line.
    This is not advisable for KMS (which the NVIDIA driver does not support anyway).
    Per the wiki, if using KMS and you are having resolution problems, use "fbset" which is found in the extra repo.
    I'm using nvidia-173xx and fbset returns "open /dev/fb0: No such file or directory".
    Does it work for you?

  • Qosmio x770 nvidia and battery software

    Hello.
    I've got a qosmio x770 model PSBY5U (Windows7, 64bits) and suddenly I've noticed that my nvidia hardware (GTX560M) was not listed in the device manager lists. Before I've noticed, I've got some blue screens of death (most of them, after coming back from "sleeping" mode).
    First thing I thought about, the driver. Looked for the most updated driver and it couldnt find any hardware to work with. So I restored the whole system and installed the original drvier. So far it was all good and back to normal but after I installed all my software back and after several rebooting, the nvidia was gone again and after sleeping the machine and starting it again, another blue screen.
    I decided on restoring the qosmio to its total factory state, did everything all over again (drivers and stuff), worked just fine and after several normal shut downs it dissapeared again, and so on.
    Any idea of what is going on? Also, starting from these, I've noticed that the "eco utility" doesn't work anymore. When active,  my battery drains very fast (it's not the battery). and these started to happen as soon as the nvidia problem started. While just the system restored, the eco utility works just fine, after the nvidida dissapears, it doesn't economized the battery. Any idea?
    Thank's a lot!
    PS. Excuse my bad english. Not an english speaker.

    If something you're installing is interfering, try using System Restore to restore a previous restore point from before this became an issue.
    Install software one at a time to determine which program is causing the problem.

  • Bluescreen! Updating Lenovo's nVidia driver for Win7 64bit on my w520

    No other messages were found that addressed this:
    Audio out  disappeared for no obvious reason playing web content on a TV through the DisplayPort (DP->HDMI adapter) on discrete graphics settings (in BIOS.) Most important, clicking the nVidia icon in Control Panel didn't bring up any dialog or control box/tool. So I went to the Lenovo driver updates for my machine and there is offered a very recent package of drivers for all the machine's graphics: nVidia and integrated. I downloaded that and ran it. On the restart the w520 bluescreened and a repair routine started that took a while to get the w520 booted. Looking at the "System" log there are a series of kernel power Warnings.
    The event text says:
    "The speed of processor 2 in group 0 is being limited by system firmware. The processor has been in this reduced performance state for 71 seconds since the last report." This doesn't *seem* to be related to graphics...
    When the machine was up and running I went to the Control Panel and the nVidia software didn't start from the icon there, so probably no change. Same as before trying to install the new drivers. I had made a Restore Point just before trying the driver upgrade.
    The driver package was dated August 2012, I believe. Anyone successfully loaded this set of drivers?

    Not getting completely solved. I installed the Lenovo driver with a driver file freshly downloaded. Process seemed to touch all bases... screen went to low resolution in the middle of the process. After two restarts needed to return the display to full resolution I see only one "nVidia 1000 Quadro" device under video adapters in Device Manager. I thought the integrated Lenovo device was going to be there, too. Further problem: there is no nVidia item in Control Panel.
    My goal is to be able to have beter control over when the nVidia board is running, as I use Lightroom, Photoshop, etc. sometimes. I shoot tethered professionally. So I want to *know* when I have the boost from the nVidia hardware.
    Will someone please confirm that I should be seeing the integrated graphics solution in Device Manager? ...and the nVidia control panel in current driver?
    Thanks!

  • Qosmio X300 - new nvidia graphic drivers are uninstallable: no nvidia chip

    hello,
    i have the qosmio X300-14P with windows 7..
    i play actual games (f.e. skyrim) which need the LATEST video driver!
    the x300 is said to have a nvidia geforce 9800M GTX video chip.
    however, when i download the latest driver (295.73 today), at installation it says :
    no nvidia hardware detected - unable to install !
    =====================================
    this is so with all nvidia drivers in the last 2 years (with windows 7 and windows vista alike) !
    what is the problem ?
    did toshiba not include an nvidia chip, but a cheap chinese noname chip, or what is the problem here ?
    whatever notebook i had before the toshiba, it would accept actual nvidia drivers.
    only the toshiba qosmio x300 doesnt.
    why ?
    it is vital that i install the latest drivers, how can i get by this problem ?
    the driver that toshiba offers for the qosmio x300 is almoust 3 years old (2009, now it is 2012!) -
    this is ridiculous!
    an actual video/graphics driver is urgently needed, it is vital that the nvidia drivers work.
    i ask toshiba :
    HOW can i get the latest nvidia driver to work in the qosmio x300-14P ?
    which is said to have a geforce 9800M GTX nvidia chip (though nvidia driver says : it does'nt).
    how can i get the latest `nvidia drive (295.73)r to work ?
    thank you
    q.

    thanks for the answers to all, especially blob.
    yes i am a gamer and therefore i need always the very latest graphics driver.
    (yes, skyrim runs, but not with highest settings of course).
    but i am about to buy a new notebook soon anyway.
    this branding is a problem i came across earlier with the toshiba ram already.
    that's the reason why this time i dont buy a new toshiba notebook anymore,
    i will switch to lenovo.
    i thought about the qosmio x770, as it has some nice features.
    but they removed firewire etc., well ok, i could maybe live with that,
    BUT i CANNOT live without an express card slot !
    the xpress card slot is vital, as only there you can expand your notebook.
    missing firewire could be corrected by a firewire express card, i always
    use e-sata hdd connections, so i have an express card with 2 esata ports
    (to have faster hdd writings). one internal esata port (even a combo port esata/usb2)
    is just not eno8gh for me, i have usually connected 2 or 3 external drives.
    as well i quite often use my express tv + video card.
    that a notebook at this price has no express card slot is unbelievable !
    this is a knockout feature for me.
    i can swallow a lot, but not a missing express card slot, as this is the only feature
    that makes it possible to expand a laptop (with a e-sata card, with a tv card, f.e.).
    and so i could switch my tvc card and my esata card and whatever else i need
    or might need later.
    i might have purchased the x770 had it an express card slot, but without
    it is so ridiculous that i would never buy it, no matter how good the other features are.
    an express card slot is VITAL for every notebook.
    that someone could spare it it like selling a rain jacket without a zip.
    too bad, because else the x770 is not so bad.
    i wonder what made them cut the express card out in a notebook
    (that is not expand-friendly anyway).
    i saw that some others companies did it as well.
    this will not be a fortune, as i foresee that many people will, if not at once, then later
    hate the missing express card slot.
    it was about time that they put good graphic cards in notebooks (while once they are branded,
    they are a hassle, good or not), and now they start cutting the vital express card slot.
    unexpandable is the first that comes to my mind when i think about the x770.
    the product designers at toshiba seem not to be very good.
    branding, missing express card slots - what else may we have to expect in the future ?
    i was about time to switch.

  • G61-511WM and NVIDIA?

    I remember not long after buying my HP G61-511WM (almost 2 years ago), I uninstalled something by NVIDIA that came with the laptop (not knowing what NVIDIA was). Since then I haven't had problems with anything, such as internet, playing just a couple of games, my screen being wonky, etc.
    I want to install The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion on here, and it says under the recommended system requirements 'NVIDIA GeForce 6800 series, or higher video card.' I have no clue if that's what was on here previously or not.
    Can anyone tell me what NVIDIA product came with my G61? I tried Google and the HP Software & Driver Downloads site; that didn't help me much. Or am I just completely insane and some random software installed it on here without me knowing?
    It's Windows 7 64-bit, if that makes a difference.

    Hi:
    You're definitely not insane, but you are a bit off course...
    Below is the link to the product specs for your notebook.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01868469&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en...
    You have the ATI Radeon 4200 graphics adapter. When you look at the driver download page, there is no nVidia hardware that I can see.
    Now, you can try installing the latest graphics driver from AMD and see if that de-wonks your graphics and helps with your gaming.
    http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonmob_win7-64.aspx
    If that driver doesn't work for you, try the one on your notebook's download page: It is 2 years out of date, but you may have to live with it.

  • Jut got a new laptop but the nvidia gpu is no where to be found

    Hi! so yea i recently got my new HP ENVY 15t-j100 notebook pc and im haveing a huge error with the graphics card. I downloaded League of Legends to test the specs of the pc and it was really laggy and low quality whic didnt make sense because the pc has good specs so i noticed right away it must be the graphics card since i right clicked the desktop and the only graphics settings that shows up is the default intel graphics settings. I also looked everywhere in the device manager and the only thing that shows up is intel hd graphics 4600 no sighn of the nvidia geforce card (i know it was suposed to come with one the laptop even has the sticker for it) so i tryed to dowload the driver from hp site it gave me the nvidia driver right away when i autodetected my pc but when i tryed to instal it it said something about that there is no nvidia hardware detected thanks in advance for any help

    Hey Flint355,
    Welcome at the HP forums.
    As far as I know you can set the GPU at the Nvidia control panel or by a right click.
    If you go to the league of legends executable .exe and rightclick it you should see an option of "Run with Graphics processor..." Select the nvidia.
    Otherwise open the Nvidia Control Panel and click on manage 3d settings > then use program settings.
    Let me know if it helped.
    After reading your message twice you can enable the GPU in your bios.

  • NVIDIA display driver on Satellite 2450-201

    i have downloaded and installed the latest nvidia display driver for my laptop which has nvidia gforce 420 go and the driver i installed was the v 36.48 when i boot up the displays are bad and we=hen i log on it says nview load error no nvidia hardware detected on the primary monitor if you are running on nvidia card please make sure it is configured to be primary. what shall i do when i access the nevidia desktop manger in control pannel and check the box the message comes up again then i restart and the graphics are fine but after about 5 boot ups it goes back to the rubish graphocs and message appears again.
    what shall i do!

    Hi
    Did you install the driver from the Toshiba page??
    If not so visit the Toshiba driver page and download the right driver.
    Its not recommended to use NOT Toshiba graphic card drivers.
    Then I would recommend checking the display properties if the notebook screen was set as the primary monitor. Mark the display with the number 1 and check it the option Use this device as the primary monitor was enabled.
    Furthermore check in the Advanced option in the nView tab if the nView mode was set to standard and that the option Make this the primary display was enabled for the notebook screen.

  • Satellite A660 Cant get official updates and iTunes-64 wont install

    Hi,
    I've had my laptop for about 3 weeks now and have some problems that maybe someone here can help with :)
    It is a Toshiba Satellite A660 Windows 7 64 bit, with all the toshiba support options allowed - tempro, bulleting board health check etc.
    Problem 1:
    The toshiba bulleting board asked me to update a load of stuff - Bios, Display Drivers, Wireless drivers etc.
    The only update that (appeared to...it didnt freeze at least ) worked was the broadcom wireless driver update.
    So, for the display update, I download the file, extract it, and nothing happens - I have tried running the tinstallwb.exe myself -
    I get prompted if I want the program to modify the hard drive, I say yes..and thats the last I hear of it..been trying for hours to get this to work, but i look at a desktop with no activity. In the archive folder, if I try and run the setup.exe (i.e. the nvidia part) it says that no valid nvidia hardware has been detected.
    Problem 2:
    I tried the bios update, that the bulletin board asked me to install...it failed, just didnt want to install.
    Problem 3:
    I spend most of the time powering down the laptop, as it freezes on the shutdown screen...
    Problem 4:
    Prob not a toshiba issue - but I cannot install Quicktime or iTunes...the installer just freezes (It doesnt go into not responing though) - I left th elaptop runningn for about 4 hours yesterday, trying to install itunes 64 bit until I had to kill the task (and power down, as shutdown doesnt work)
    Any ideas, I've given up on trying to update the updates that the toshiba Bulleting board is telling me to update?
    I've tried the obvious update everything I can, but the toshiba updates dont update :(
    Other software installed: MS Office and Outlook, firefox.
    Thanks for any help,
    Andy

    Hi
    1) You can download all the drivers directly from the Toshiba European driver page.
    If you really need an update, then you should download the file, should save it on the HDD, should unzip the package and should either execute the setup.exe or should update the driver from the device manager.
    2) Here is a HowTo doc about BIOS update:
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/ann.jspa?annID=60
    If this is not possible, then your Windows OS might be muddled up and maybe you should recover the notebook before running a BIOS update.
    3) As suggested above; all these issues might be related to the corrupted OS and maybe you need to reinstall the OS to get it working again.
    4) see point 3

  • Tesla card in Maximus not being used

    I spent a few thousand dollars buying a Quadro 6000 and a Tesla M2090, but the later inever gets used at any time by Premiere CS6. I tested the usage with the command below and the GPU and memory is always zero, when playing back, when exporting, etc. The card is simply ignored.
    Is there something I am missing? I am exporting a 45 minute video for Youtube only with acceleted effects and it takes about 40 minute to generate the file. Sould it not take much less time?

    THE TRUTH, THE TRUTH AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH ABOUT PREMIERE AND NVIDIA
    I finally have the picture clear. In order to reach this "illumination" I assembleda laboratory with
    a) a $25.000 server Dlel R901 with 24 cores at 2.7 Ghz and 128 Gb of RAM and Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise
    b) a Quadro 6000 + Tesla M2090
    c) a Geforce GTX 285
    d) a EVGA GeForce GT 640
    e) a Desktop computer with an I7 980 with 25 GB of RAM and Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise
    f) a Mac 10.7.4 with an 8-core I7 990 at 3.2 Ghz
    Background: I shoot a 45 minute video every saturday for a non-for-profit institution, as a hobby.  That is why I push this so hard. My goal is to shorten the time it takes from shooting the video and uploading it to Youtube. This involves one video track, one title, and some CUDA accelerated effects like RGB curves , zooming plus some audio enhancement.
    Some facts: Even the cheapest Nvidia card available, the GT 640, can do realtime CUDA effects, whoever tells you different is trying to defraud you. It does work, at least in my one video-track scenario. The bottleneck is not realtime display, is exporting it to H264. When Premiere is exporting H264 at 1280x720 highest possible quality, it uses the CUDA engine in full. I proved it. It also uses the CPU, but without CUDA, even if pre-rendered, it takes a lot longer to export, several times longer. Some people say that when exporting Premiere does not use the CUDA engine, but they are flat wrong.
    Quadro 6000 + Tesla M2090, COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY. This is what happens: you would think that having the two most expensive cards in the Nvidia portfolio, the time it takes to export the video would shorten, but it is wrong. The geniouses at Nvidia/ Premiere only use in card at the time, I proved it. If the Tesla is present in the system, they use it above the Quadro, and the Quadro is idle at 0% while the Tesla is running at 90% GPU and it does require cooling or it smells like it is catching fire. All in all, it will not save any time over using the Quadro 6000 alone. However, why would you ever spend the money on either card, when an old GTX 285 can do the same exact job for only 10% more time, I mean going from 40 to 45 minutes? You need to be high on drugs to spend almost $8.000 in hardware for something that a $200 card can do in only 10% more time. It is all a marketing fad. Unless you have 10 video tracks and dozens of effects, no need to spend a dime over $200, even a $100 GT 640 will do it.
    THE COMPUTER: does it matter? No it does not. My $25.000 server will still export the same video in the same 40 minutes, using the cheapest card, the GT 640, which being half-length, is the only one that I could fit in my server. In my desktop box with an I7 980 and 25 GB of RAM, it takes the exact same time to export the same video, so save the server for a higher purpose.
    It gets even better. I don't use Windows 7, but Windows server 208 R2 with full desktop composition, which is the same as Windows 7 for any video editing purpose. But I also have a Mac 10.7.4, with 25 GB of RAM, built by me, with a I7 990 (8 cores at 3.2 Ghz). Premiere takes around 10 times more time to export the same exact video with the same exact CUDA effects and card on the Mac, as compared to Windows. A complete catastrophe. It uses the Mercury Engine for realtime, but apparently not for exporting the video to H264, while in Windows it does use it just fine. Something is wrong here, very wrong. This time I think Adobe is to blame. Please be advised that hard drives are not to blame on this difference. I am not an idiot. In both Operating Systems I created a 2 GB RAM disk and exported to this device. So please stop arguing that raid cards and other gimmicks can shorten export times. It is unrelated, since there is nothing faster than a RAM disk. On the Mac I even tried to store the source on the same RAM disk as the exported file, and it did not substantially improve the time it takes to export.
    Conclusion: if you can find it in Craigslit, buy yourself a GTX 285 used. It is the best bang for the buck, and avoid any expensive Nvidia hardware.

  • Mac mini and Sony tv resolution issue

    Hello,
    I have recently purchased a Mac mini for the purposes of hooking it up to my 51" Sony Wega HDTV. I took the mini out and connected the DVI adaptor that came in box and then hooked the mini to the tv via HDMI cable thinking this was the best possible connection for my mini. I have an issue where the screen is over flowing off the TV screen. I looked in system preference and have very limited resolution options but 1080i was selected and also over scan was checked. If I deselect overscan I get borders which I don't want. My tv doesn't have many options so how can I calibrate these two to work togethor?

    I just discovered this is not a TV issue at all...
    Uh, yes it is. Overscan is a condition unique to TVs. Computer monitors don't do it (overscan) hence there is normally no need for the kind of graphics card driver you are talking about, e.g. one that has precise control of video borders.
    Many TVs on the market today have a method for defeating overscan, tucked away somewhere in their menu system, in order to allow the TV to be used just like a computer monitor. That is always the preferred solution when it is available because it will make the best possible image on the TV.
    Your TV is a rear projection TV. Such TVs are not well suited for use as computer monitors because overscan is naturally baked into the optics architecture, meaning the manufacturer deliberately sets the mirror and lens system in such a way as to cause the native resolution (1280 x 720 in the case of your TV) to extend beyond the edges of the projection screen. Therefore it is impossible to get the native resolution of the projector's engine to display fully and perfectly on the screen. Only scaled or bordered version of it can ever be displayed. It's all fixed at the factory and there's no getting around the fact.
    For the original G4 Mac mini that had ATI Graphics, there was a driver like the one you found for your father's Windows computer that allowed video borders to be set independent of resolution. But apart from that early effort on the part of ATI, I have not seen anything like that since for minis that have graphics based on Intel or nVidia hardware. I think you are going to be stuck with the dark video borders as a necessary limitation of the TV you own in the absence of any driver to counteract that limitation.
    I believe the media center front end app called Plex has a facility for setting video borders, but I've never used it personally since I am able to turn overscan off on my TV. So I can't vouch for how well it works. And in any case, since it is bound to the app, it will only be active when Plex is running and not when, say for example, the Finder is in use, which is when you most need it.

  • Final cut pro quit unexpectedly while using the CUDA plug-in?

    Hello,
       FCP 7 quits on Quicktime conversion export every single time.
         Just to give some information as to how this issue started, we recently had to send our Mac early 2009 OSX 10.8.5 to get repaired because of permissions issues with the start-up drive.  We had been running 10.8.5 and Final Cut Pro 7.0.3 for a while without any major issues.  We also have a 3rd party graphics card installed, the Sapphire HD 7950 for mac which has been running for about six months and still seems to operate correctly.  As part of the repair the Apple certified shop re-installed our OSX.
    After they re-installed our OS, I ran Final Cut Pro 7 and realized that I was unable to export using Quicktime Conversion.  Every time I try to export using Quicktime Conversion, Final Cut Pro instantly crashes saying "Final Cut Pro Quit Unexpectedly while using the CUDA plug-in".  I asked Sapphire/AMD Radeon support what the problem was and they said this is a Final cut pro problem and not related to their card.  Their response was "CUDA isn't supported by AMD hardware in MacOSX.  My best guess is that either an option was turned on in Final Cut Pro to use CUDA, or the program is doing some sort of detection (possibly on installed NVIDIA Drivers).  Without the NVIDIA hardware, the drivers would be running and hence the active but unsupported CUDA would fail."
         Below is the log from the error that happens when I try to export using quicktime conversion.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

    Thank you Michael.
    I was exporting a QT Movie and bringing into compressor but there was a further problem of Compressor greying out the "submit" button, so that option wasn't available when I posted.
        Your solution led me in the right direction to fix my problem.  The Digital Rebellion application is very good and when I ran the crash analyzer, it still said the CUDA plugin was the culprit.  But when I tried looking at the available plugins, it didn't show up.  I ran a search for the plugin and found that there was a folder under Library>Frameworks>CUDA.framework.  I copied that folder into a folder I made on the desktop (because I didn't want to delete something that the computer needed to run) and then deleted it from the Framework folder.  I knew that our third party graphics card we installed didn't support CUDA, so I thought I'd be okay risking this; I could also replace that folder from the desktop if something major happened.  I restarted and then tried exporting using QT Conversion.  It worked!
        Next problem then was Compressor.  I needed to find out why compressor's submit button was greyed out.  The application seemed to work fine, the version of compressor and Q master were the same, 3.5.3, but it didn't allow me to submit anything. I ran compressor repair from the Digital Rebellion application and it didn't change things.  I read up a while on why this was happening and found on a support community that had similar issues.  Many people on it said this update for Pro Applications fixed their problems:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl949
    So I think, now my computer is running the same way as it was before (except for Sorenson Squeeze which I need to fix).  Thanks for the help!
