HOWTO: Resize Bootcamp (NTFS) partition for free using gparted

Hi,
Well, if you find your Bootcamp/NTFS/Windows partition running out of space, you may want to increase it or decrease it. The OSX Bootcamp utility doesn't allow resizing the NTFS partitio nor does Disk Utility. Here is a free solution ...
NOTE: I've tried this on Windows 7 64bit, but it should work with other windows setups in a similar manner.
Requirements:
1. SysRescueCD (for an NTFS capable 'gparted')
- http://www.sysresccd.org/Download
2. rEFIt bootable CD (or install to hard disk, doesn't matter)
- http://refit.sourceforge.net/doc/c1s5_burning.html
3. Windows XP/Vista/7 CD (depends what you've installed)
- just for a quick 'repair' at the end, no reinstall here!
In short:
1 Shrink Mac partition in OSX's Disk Utility
2 Grow the NTFS partition in gparted booting off sysrescue CD (reboot->option key). This may take 30mins to a few hours to complete!
3 Boot the rEFIt CD -> choose "start partitioning tool" -> hit yes when it says it needs to sync the MBR with the GPT.
4 Boot your Windows CD.
Vista/Windows7 CD -> hit the repair option to fix the boot record.
XP CD -> you may need to go to the administrative shell and type fixboot and then fixmbr.
5. Reboot and you should be able to boot into Windows via the option key as before. I liked rEFIt a lot so I installed it to my disk itself. (FYI, I did notice I needed to install rEFIt a few times to get it to show up during boot time)

One bug I learnt:
if
1. you set the 'boot' flag on the Windows partition in gparted AND
2. you use gptsync to sync the GPT with the MBR (i.e. MBR->GPT translation)
then
you will find that your Windows partition becomes inaccessible in OS X. Your partition is OK - you can boot in windows etc - OS X just doesn't see it as a NTFS partition.
Solution:
1. Don't enable the boot flag in gparted. Simple, no need to read further.
If you're done it and have been hit by the bug and would like to see Windows/Bootcamp again in Finder, read on...
1. Goto http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=31562, post #9 has a tool to fix it. Download the diskpart.zip file (it's got diskpart.efi)
2. Extract the diskpart.zip file, copy the diskpart.efi to /efi/tools on your OSX volume (default location for hard disk install of rEFIt).
3. Reboot, in the rEFIt menu, select the EFI terminal
4. type fs1: and hit enter. This should take you to your Leopard volume (for me fs0: was the 1st partition (EFI boot partition), fs1: was the 2nd partition (Leopard)
5. type _cd /efi/tools_ and hit enter
6. type diskpart and hit enter
7. As the post linked above says, type
+select <zero-based disk number>+
inspect
+chtype <zero-based partition number> MSDATA+
For me this was
+select 0+
inspect
+chtype 2 MSDATA+
Look at the output of select to make sure you're using the right number - if you have your eyes open it's hard to make a mistake!
Behind the scene details:
Your partition type is set to NTFS in the MBR table (which is why windows can load it up etc) but if you do the above then the partition type in the GPT is written as EFI instead of NTFS (or more accurately 'MSDATA'). This is a bug in gptsync and I believe Chris (writer of rEFIt) is aware of this - at least another post elsewhere made it look like that. I guess you can't blame it since EFI, GPT tools are still in their infancy.
BTW, to sync the GPT with the MBR, there is a tool gptsync. I believe it's a tool from Intel's EFI toobox. It exists as either an efi program (i.e. gptsync.efi, runs when you select it from rEFIt's menu) or as a OSX program (just gptsync, runs when you download it and type 'sudo gptsync').

Easy to install Lion with BootCamp + Win 8 + NTFS partition for data?

Hey, I have a MacBook Pro (2011) currently on OS X 10.6.8, but I bought Lion 10.7 and want to use that.
Here's what I want to do:
* install Lion (fresh, not upgrade)
* install BootCamp
* install Win 8 (DevEd) (for games and some other apps)
And here are my questions:
1) What's the best (free) way to save/"ghost" the current OS so I can quickly get back to that in case something happens when I install Lion?
2) What order do I install BootCamp and Win 8 in? Any fool-proof tutorial for how to do this?
3) If I do a backup with Time Machine as the last thing I do before installing Lion, I just copy the data back from the TM drive after install, right?
4) I would like to use Win 8 and some programs there to read and write to the HFS+ OS X partition - is there a free and/or good way to do that?
5) On PC I can use WinAmp, the great plugin "DeleteCurrentSong" and a shortcut key to delete the currently playing track. Is there a way to do something similar in any program in OS X?
6) If not, would it be possible to - early in the install process - make a big NTFS partition and put most of my data there so it can be accessed from both OS X (with Paragon) and Windows? And Time Machine wouldn't back it up as long as it's NTFS, right?

Answer to question 1:
a. Get a USB disc the same size or better larger than your internal HD
b. Download Carbon Copy Cloner (free)
c. Clone the internal HD to the external disc
d. Reboot with the 'option' key held down. Choose the external disc to check that the clone was successful and is bootable.
e. If yes, reboot again, hodling down the 'option' key. Choose the internal HDD.
f. Dismount/eject the external HD and disconnect it from your computer.
g. Go to app store and download Lion.
h. When the download is complete, DO NOT run it. First, copy the file (Applications > Lion Install.app) to another location on your disc (the downloads folder will do). This is because after you run the installer it will delete itself from the Applications folder, and you may very well either want/need to do a re-install later without wanting to wait for hours for the download.
i. Run Applications > Lion Install.app

"...have tried all different sizes with no luck" tells us nothing about what size you tried. If indeed you tried all different sizes then you don't have enough space. What size did you try? What happens when you try? What error messages do you get?

How do i test my magazine for free using the current viewer builder?

I downloaded the adobe viewer builder, and i entered all my license's. I get to the activation page. Then it ask me to purchase a serial number. When it brings me to the
site, it prompts me to purchase something for $400.00.
I just want to test, for free... How do i do that?

I think thats insane considering the adobe content viewer doesnt work on the ipad with the current DPS folios.
Is there any other alternative?

Unable to erase windows ntfs partition thru mac using disk utility

i connected my desktop hard disk to my mac. i am not able to delete any files from the Windows NTFS partition. in disk utility the erase option is greyed out.
please help.

NTFS is a read-only filesystem to OS X. You can read and copy files from an NTFS formatted drive but you cannot write to one.

Invalid sizes for free/used space

Hi All
We have an ipod mini on an XP system. Worked for a few months without any real problems. Recently we upgraded the computer and have had all sorts of issues. The itunes and ipod software is current, we've got all the latest hardware drivers, and xp updates. The itunes and ipod updater both report about 114.5Gb (yes, Gbytes) of space. The updater says that we are current with v1.4 of the software and 114.5Gbyte Capacity. Go into itunes and it says that the library is 431 songs=1.55Gbyte but when I click on the ipod in itunes it says that we have zero songs and 45.92Gbyte used space and 65.87 free which is obviously crap as its a 4G mini. The ipod will not appear in the explorer even though its set to be used for data.
And I have set it up on my toshi notebook and it works fine, so it is not the ipod itself.
Anyone, please help. It has chewed up almost 10 hours of my day today and I cannot figure it out.

Samantha, is it possible you have network drives or an external drive attached to your computer? What you're seeing is a symptom of Windows confusing the iPod's drive with these other drives and therefore showing the incorrect capacities. The solution is to assign the iPod a drive letter that is far removed from those other drives.

I wanna know too!! I had no problem making ringtones before from songs on my computer and then adding them to itunes, but now it doesn't seem to work. I can actually make the ringtone and add it to itunes and it will play, but it won't sync to my phone (phone doesn't even recognize the ringtone when I try to plug it in and sync).
The only real difference now is I used to have an iPhone 3G and now I have the 3GS.

to output a video file that can be transfered onto

to do is go into setup and where it says "one-click
profile" change that to "SP/320x240/1500..." and then
chose a directory that you want it to output to. SAVE
now, when you go to convert make sure you click on
"one-click transcode" and chose the file(s) you want
it to convert to. to chose more then one file hold down ctrl and click on all the videos you want (it has to be in the same folder from my knowledge). when its done you'll have the orignal video on your computer as well as a mpeg-4 version (you can tell which is which, change your folder view to details and it will say under "type". drag and drop all the mpeg-4 ones into iTunes MAIN LIBRARY, NOT VIDEOS!. if you want, after its done, you can delete the original as well as the mpeg-4 files because iTunes saves it again, at least it does for me since i have a CONSILIDATED LIBRARY which means anything you put into iTunes thats not apart of its directory folder, it will make a copy of and put in its directory folder. If you don't have a consildated library you should not delete the mpeg-4 files. Edit your video files in iTunes and connect your ipod and see the magic happen. And
that is that. ENJOY!!

The full version of Nero has a program called RECODE.
It's output displays well in the IPOD.
You can choose the quality, amount of compression, screen size, etc.
I went to the Quicktime page that shows how to do this in Quicktime and it gives the suggested screensize and bitrates to go by and set NERO to . A 2 hour movie in 300MB appears to have no major sacrifice in quality using the small screen. The video compression properties screen has a checkbox that says "simple - Quicktime compatible" that may or may not have helped, but I set it as a new default profile called IPOD.

Sync iCal and Address Book for free (using Google)

This works like a charm. It is really two-way sync, using google as an intermediary.
For Address Book: import your contacts from Address Book to Google Contacts, put them on My contacts list, set sync to Google on Address Book preferences, then set Google as your primary account on your phone's contacts app. Now, any new contacts or changes you make, on the phone or on the computer will sync. You can find more info here.
For iCal: enter your google info under accounts in iCal preferences, set up google as your primary calender on your phone. In iCal you will have to enter events under the google tab for them to be synced to google calendar and then to your phone. And of course, whatever entries or changes done here or there will sync. What's nice about this is that you never have to go to google for anything, it's just the middle guy working in the background, invisible.
Could this really be "the missing sync"?

I don't know if you can do this with the Centro. I should have mention that I was talking about webOS (Pre and Pixi). To sync with webOS you need Mac OS 10.5 or later for iCal, and 10.6 for Address Book.

Resized Boot Camp partition; now I have "disk0s4"

OK so i was following this tutorial on how to increase your boot camp partition from this website.

I resized my Boot Camp partition to give Windows 7 more space. In Disk Utility on OS X ML, I reduced the size of my OS X partition. So then i clicked apply and now that partition says disk0s4. I tried to verfiy and repair it through disk utitlity but It wont let me as there are problems. I have reiszed my parition before and never had this problem before. What did I do wrong and will I be able to fix it?

As you have found out, those instructions do not work, so.
If you can you still boot to OSX, you can Use Boot Camp to remove the Windows partition and return the Mac to normal, then start agin.
Next time you need to resize an NTFS partition use Paragon Camp Tune, which can do it without borking things.
Do Not Ever use Disk Utility to do anything to a Windows partition, it will make the problem worse.

Disk utility resize mac partition resulted in 'no bootable disk' while starting from bootcamp windows partition

my macbook air had two partitions for Mac OS and Windows XP. Because XP partition is too small, I used disk utitility in Mac OS to shrink the Mac partition, and make a new FAT32 partition, which I expected to use it in windows. Till now, I can find three partitions in disk utitily, MacOS/FAT32(which is totally free)/Bootcamp(windows). And in system preference->boot disk, I can see both Mac OS X and Bootcamp Windows.
But when I reboot the computer and press "option" key while rebooting, I only see two boot device options, "mac os" and "recovery", no Bootcamp Windows.
Anybody can give me a hand to recover my previous windows and use the freed partition in windows? Thanks.

I have a rather similar problem having a BootCamp Windows 8 Partition. I actually have 2 NTFS partitions for windows and 1 for Mac OS. The situation is:
0 - for Mac OS
1 - BootCamp windows (NTFS - boot) - 60GB
2 - Windows (NTFS) - 100GB
After updating to Maverick I have no idea why, but now I have:
in Mac OS:
0 - Mac OS
1 - BootCamp - 160G
In Windows:
0 - Mac OS
1 - BootCamp - 60GB
I have tried recovering the partition with a windows program, but all it could do is find it, but without any files on it.
How can I restore my partition table to the way it was?!
WHY did Mac OS mess up my windows partition table?
WHY didn't I get a warning that the Boot Table will get altered?!

For free using cellular voice or data? Forget it. Especially if you have Verizon. T-Mobile is the only US carrier with reasonable roaming rates and services. Verizon is the worst for International roaming.
If you have a WiFi connection you can use Facetime, Skype or similar apps for voice, and Yahoo Messenger, GoogleTalk, Twitter or similar for texting.
If you are eligible for an upgrade get an iPhone 5S from Verizon. It is unlocked for International use. So you can use an Israeli SIM while there. It won't be free, but it will be no more expensive than anyone in Israel pays.

Yes. iMessages are free.
If it reverts to SMS due to no connectivity you will be charged normal international SMS rates. This feature can be turned off in Message settings.

Can't install Windows 7 (NTFS partition)

New MacBook Pro (bought in August with version 10.5.8), just updated to Snow Leopard. Boot Camp is v. 3.
Created a 100GB partition for Windows using Bootcamp, clicked install and inserted the Windows 7 64-bit disk. Did this twice - same error "Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. Windows must be installed to a partition formatted as NTFS."
I was never asked - I thought any partition >32GB was by default NTFS?

I have the same problem. I have "Disk 0 Partition 3: BOOTCAMP" highlighted. There is no option to "format." I just see an error message. "Windows cannot be installed to Disk 0 Partition 3." I click for details, and it says, "Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. Windows must be installed to a partition formatted as NTFS."
I've seen screenshots of the install screen with the format button, so I know what it's supposed to look like. I'm not missing it.
EDIT: NEVER MIND, I'm a dum-dum. I didn't click disk options or whatever to get to the screen with the format options.

Can I Create a 2 NTFS Partitions on my iMac

I have an iMac, running Leopard, a 320GB Hard Drive and I want to install Win XP Pro.
My ultimate objective is to have my Windows OS and programs on a seperate dirve (formatted NTFS) and then have a second NTFS partition for my Windows related Data Files, labeled as my second drive (Also formatted NTFS)
I tried so many times in a differant ways using Boot Camp but it didnt work at all. Could any one please assist me, its been more than 2 month since i purchased my iMac and till now i couldnt move my work from my current PC.
Please if any one could help i would be highly appriciated.

You can do what you said, but I don't think what you want.
You can only have two partitions on your internal drive, one for OS X and 2nd for Windows.
You could have a 2nd external drive as your data drive.
If you want 3 partitions on your internal drive, you'll have to use Disk Utility and not BootCamp Assistant; or you'll need to look into how to setup a triple boot system.
You can make a large NTFS partition for Windows, and then take a slice out of that for data, trouble being that some things won't work properly.
If you are wanting to read and write to NTFS from OS X, then Paragaon has a NTFS drive version 6.5. And if you want to read/write HFS+ from Windows, then MacDrive7 can accomplish that.
You can't install and boot Windows from USB drives.
What you want to do is easy, with a system with multiple internal hard drives.
