HP 5MP printer with AEBS?

Can the HP 5MP printer be successfully used via AEBS (and with a PB g4 running 10.4.9)?
I keep reading conflicting information whenever I try searching about this.
In the past I had the 5mp going into a AsanteTalk adapter that allowed me to plug into an ethernet hub. That was back in the OS 9 and imac days.
From what I can gather, I can get a Jetdirect External print server (which type?) and use it with 10.4.9. But will this solution work through the airport extreme?
Or should I just give up and get a usb-printer?

Give up and get a USB printer. Several good ones from Canon to HP sell for as low as $99 and work fine with the AEBSn.

  • Does the HP 5MP printer work with Mavericks?

I have an old HP 5MP printer that currently sits unused.  It served me well years ago so I'm reluctant to get rid of it.
From what I understand, I could use a simple USB Parallel Printer adapter to get the printer working with the 10.6.8 version of X I currently use.  (I'd just be printing out some simple text documents, no images, etc.)
However, I thought I read somewhere that the 5MP will no longer work in Mavericks.   Is this correct?  (I hope to eventually install Mavericks within the next few months.)

No, no other computers on a network to hook it up to.
Honestly, I guess I'm looking for someone to tell me to get rid of it.  Space is limited here and I should probably part with the 5MP.  But I know that even if I try donating it it may end up in the trash somewhere.  It's a solid and decent printer (for simple text items) and don't want to see it killed.

    John,
You may be able to find a Color LaserJet CP1518ni for around that price if you look around. At least here in the states I've found it for $299 and less, although it retails at $399 which is a bit higher then you are looking for. It is the least expensive color laser printer we are currently selling (in the US at least) and it includes PostScript 3 emulation.
    Just trying to help.

  • Need instruction on how to print with HP Officejet 6210

this is with a powerbook G4 1.5, OS 10.4.5, and an HP Officejet 6210 with newest drivers (released 8/06).
I've used an HP PSC950 for years, connected to my AEBS with USB, using Felix's instructions for setting up the foomatic/hpijs driver, always worked great. Once in a while it would go out on me, rarely, and i'd reinstall the driver and it would work again.
Several months ago, i was trying to print something on Mapquest and i gave too many commands at once and the system got confused and ever since then, it won't print wirelessly, reinstalling the driver didnt' help.
Also, i'm not sure i'm adapting Felix's instructions to the new OS which doesn't exactly match the instructions.
Anyway, haven't had wireless printing in months. Finally tonight, i went out and got a new printer, the HP Officejet 6210, first checking and finding it on the compatability list, both Felix's list and HP's list.
I set it up, it works fine with direct computer/printer USB connection.
I just don't know how to set up the Mac to print with the 6210. I have the 6210 connected to the AEBS with USB cable. I dont know what else to do.
I went to an HP page where it gives step by step instructions for USB to Airport instructions.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c00592751&produc t=421991&dlc=en&lang=en
Step one and two are OK. Step 3 says:
"Turn on the printer and verify that the wireless mode is enabled. If you need more information on how to enable the wireless mode, see the User Manual which shipped with the printer."
I have no clue about how to verify that the wireless mode is enabled. In the index of the 6210 User Manual there is not a word about 'wireless.' The word 'network' isn't in there either. Under 'Connection' it doesn't mention anything about wireless printing. So i'm not really able to do this step.
I tried to do the other steps but if they are talking about the Airport pull down menu in Step 4, there is no printer listed there. I tried to follow step 5 but it leads nowhere.
Is there some way to set up the Mac the way i set it up for the foomatic/hpijs driver for the PSC 950, so that i can select 10.0.1.1 in the printer menu and print? I tried going into the set up utility and chose Add and chose internet IPP printing and wanted to choose the HP 6210 driver but it wasn't available. There was an HP 6200 series foomatic/hpijs driver--what does that mean? Am i supposed to use that? I chose that and tried to print from 10.0.1.1 but in Print Jobs it just says "10.0.1.1 is busy, will retry in 30 seconds." In other words, it doesn't work. This is what happened when i tried to get the PSC 950 working again too.
Anyway, the HP instructions don't have anything to do with any of this. They just say to make sure the wireless mode is on and then go to Safari and choose Bonjour and various other things that when i try them, they aren't available as choices.
I know that someone on these forums was able to use Bonjour to print with their laptop so it must be possible (with Windows however).
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1494092&#1494092
Plus HP says they tested the connection with Mac OS and it works. So it must just be a matter of some knowledge i am lacking that would get it working.
If the printer won't work, i have to return it within 14 days so I need to get on it and try to determine if it will work.
Could there be a problem with my AEBS, which would explain why i was never able to get my PSC950 to print wirelessly again after that crash on Mapquest?
Do i need to reinstall the OS?
I seriously don't think this printer has a wireless mode, otherwise it would be mentioned in the manual. I ran through the menu, tools and preferences (on the printer)--nothing about wireless mode. But why should it need a wireless mode if it's connected by USB cable to the AEBS? Isn't this just a matter of setting up the Mac software to print with Airport?

i have duplicate posts because when i tried to post the comments on 'question answered', i got a red error message saying i had violated no posting within 30 seconds of the last post. I carefully counted out 30 seconds and then waited some more, but i got the same error when i tried to post it again. so then i clicked on the Reload or Refresh browser button, "are you sure you want to send this page again?" yes. then i tried sending the answer comments again and it posted, a long with two duplicates.
What ever happened to the Edit and Delete post buttons that used to be available on this site, for a short time after posting?

  • Problem using HP LaserJet 5M with AEBS

    HISTORY:
Well over a year ago I was able to add a 5M printer to the LAN port of my AEBS and print wirelessly using first a G4 PB and later a G4 mini. This is my only printer. It showed up every time I hit Cmd-P. So easy/convenient. Recently I migrated to a Intel duo mini and found I could not print using the laserJet 5M. Talked to Apple Tech Support and they said I would need to wait until HP wrote a new Intel Duo-based driver. Yeeps!
    WHAT I CAN/CANNOT DO:
Went back to the Printer Setup Utility and did considerable experimentation (tried different settings). No luck getting the new mini to print via the AEBS.
However, I did get it to print when I connected the HP 5M directly to the mini using an ethernet cable. However this is both inconvenient and lame as I frequently use a variety of computers.
It feels to me like I'm very close to successful wifi printing with this configuration. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Was finally, on my own, able to get the laserJet to print when it was connected to the LAN port of the AEBS using the Intel Duo mini.
Required a lot of trial and error. So it is possible even though AppleCare said impossible.

  • Airport Extreme and HP 5MP printing

I have tried to get my HP 5MP printing through the new Extreme unit, but while the computer seems to see the printer, nothing prints. It works fine through the iMac USB port, but not through the Extreme USB port.
    iMac 17" non-Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Unfortunately, not all USB printers are compatible with AirPort base stations. A quick look at the iFelix Unofficial AirPort Printer Compatibility List doesn't show this particular model. This doesn't necessarily mean it won't work, but simply that it has not been verified. iFelix also provides the following workaround for printers not on the list that would certainly be worth a try.
Also, you may find the following Apple article helpful.

  • Win xp unable to print using AEBS 802.11n

I have a PC with winxp. Trying to print through AEBS 802.11n causes my printer to freak out. I tried to print this page, and the printer kept printing blank pages over and over. It prints one line of numbers/letters at the top of the page.
I am able to print fine directly from the usb port on the PC.
    thanks

Try installing Bonjour for Windows on your XP box. Available here: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourforwindows.html
This has solved printing problems for me on XP machines on several mixed Apple and Wintel networks.
    Hope this helps.

  • Cab´t Print with Airpot Extreme

When I print with direct USB connection there is no problem. I connected the printer to my Airport extreme, it recognizes that the printer is plugged but when I try to print I get "communication error" and no print. Any help? Because one of teh reasons I bought these router is for printer sharing. HELP!!!

This seems to be a common problem with USB connected printers to the AEBS "n" regardless of printer model. I have had success with a startup item called AirPrintFix which you can get here http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/24661. Put it (the whole folder) in your /library/startupitems folder. Then restart and wait a moment. The computer will ask if you want to fix permissions, say yes, and restart again (it may restart by itself anyway). Then try to print something wirelessly. If it still does not work, open the AirPrintFix script with a text editor. Right click on the icon and choose "open with" and navigate to TextEdit to open the file. You will see a line that says "/sbin/ipfw pipe 1 config bw 12Mbit/s". Make the "12Mbit/sec" read 2MBit/sec" and save the file. Restart and try printing again. What you are doing is slowing down the data transfer rate from your Mac to the USB port of the Base Station because the higher transfer rate causes a bottleneck of data.

  • I cannot access my network printer under AEBS(Airport Extreme Base Station)

The current network configuration of me is
    1. AEBS have static IP address. (e.g., 154.123.12.54)
    2. Network printer in my office have static IP address. (e.g., 154.123.12.55)
    3. My iMac is connected to AEBS. And have virtual IP address. (e.g., 10.0.1.201)
The problem is that when I trying to add my network printer on my iMac,
it works. I can find my network printer in the list.
But when I trying to print with that printer, I think any packet is not sent to network printer.
    I think AEBS block them.
How can I use my network printer under AEBS?
I didn't have any problem with my Belkin wireless router.

When you can, take a look at the old AirPort Express and locate the model number in the faint print on the side of the device.
If you see A1084 or A1088, this is an older Express version that is no longer supported by the current version of AirPort Utility that you are using with the new AirPort Extreme.
If that is the case, your Express is at least 6 years old...probably older...so it is about time to treat yourself to a new version with much faster speeds and more features.

  • Unable to print with my Canon PIXMA IP 4700 and JetDirect network appliance

After many tries I decided to post my question.
I have a Canon PIXMA IP 4700 connected to the network with a Jetdirect 175X box. So I tried to add a new printer with a "HP Jetdirect Socket" port. I have previously installed the driver from the official website. The test page is staying on the spooler.
I also tried with LPD port (supported by the Jetdirect box) and IPP but nothing is working.
When the printer is directly connected with USB, it's working fine. Printing from my others Windows computers is working fine too since many months.
    Thank your for your help.

Hello and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Your problem is being caused by the Canon driver. It cannot be used when the printer is connected to the USB port of a 3rd party print server, or if shared by Windows.
The solution is to use a driver like Gutenprint or PrintFab. Gutenprint is preferred because it is free (it ships with OS X) however the iP4700 is not listed as a supported model. The iP4600 is listed so you could try selecting this model in the Print Using menu (shown as Canon PIXMA iP4600 - Gutenprint v5.2.3). If the iP4600 Gutenprint driver does not work that well then you could look at using [PrintFab|http://www.printfab.net] which does support the iP4700. It costs €49 but there is a 30 day trial so at least you can try it before committing to buying.
Another option would be to use a Airport device, like the Express, instead of the Jetdirect print server. With the printer connected to its USB port you can then use the Canon iP4700 driver on the Mac.

  • How to print with HP Deskjet 2510 with Imac G5 on Tiger ?

    Hi Folks
I desperately need some helping hand....
Today my old trusty printer died (HP 1510 print/scan/ copy) and I ran to buy another one because I need to finish some tax paperwork.
In a mad hurry, I didn't pay any attention to tech specs and I went home with brand new HP DeskJet 2510 All In One device. But !!! : ((
In my home office I still use Imac G5 with 10.4.11 which is still pretty good comp for office work but I found out that the HP 2510 don't officially support my Imac with Tiger. Only from 10.6 and later.... I know that Imac G5 can't run nothing above 10.5.
So, is there any way to "force" HP 2510 to somehow recognize my Imac G5? In "about my mac" on USB port, the HP 2510 is visible ....
    Many thanks in advance.
    Cheers,
    Sven

So, is there any way to "force" HP 2510 to somehow recognize my Imac G5?
You may be able to get it to print with something like this:
    http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php
although i do not see taht modle on the "Supported Printers" page. You might look again.
BUT that workabout does not support scanning, only printing.
I think you need to return the printer and look to either Canon or Brother. Brother especially has been better about suporting older Mac OS versions but you'll still need to get a model number and search the maker's site BEFORE buying to see if they show older drivers for download.

  • Remote printing with iPad

I have installed the HP Print app on the iPad and have no issues printing when I am on the local net work. When I try and print when I am not on the network I receive an error that states: "oops we cannot complete the print job please try again" and there is a retry or cancel selection. My printer is set up with an email address. I can print from my Samsung note 2 using the HP Print app with no issues either on the network or off. Any ideas?

Have you tried the ePrint mobile app?
