I just upgraded to 10.8.2 and Mail is having a problem. It won't remember my password for getting mail; but it does remember the password for sending mail, i.e., smtp. Does anyone know of a fix?

The solution surprised even me, and we've been using Macs since 1984 (still have an original 128K).
I contacted Apple support, and because we had just upgraded yesterday, clicked on the "exception" button as opposed to paying the $19.99 one-time support fee. An Apple tech called and the problem was solved in two minutes.
Somehow during the installation of OS 10.8.2 (over 10.6.x) the key chain data for my email ISP login password got corrupted. The solution was to delete both the POP mail and SMTP entries in my keychain.
Back to Mail, it asked for the POP password, I entered it and bingo, mail got busy downloading. Interestingly, the password was also entered into the SMTP panel.
So, that's it. Thanks for you response, Mr. Hoffman, and regards.

    Jerricayoung,
you have a 13-inch Mid 2012 MacBook Pro. It’s modern enough that it supports booting into Recovery mode. To do so, hold down a Command key and the R key as you start up. It should eventually show a Mac OS X Utilities menu. Select Disk Utility from that menu; when the Disk Utility window appears, select the bootable volume from the left-hand side of the window. (It’s typically called “Macintosh HD”.) When the volume is selected, some buttons will appear on the right-hand side. If it’s not greyed out, press the Verify Disk button; if it is greyed out, or if it reports on errors that it found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu; that will restart your MacBook Pro in its normal mode. With luck, that will be enough to get you to your normal login screen, rather than the white screen.

    Try:
Why does my iPod 4th generation say the certificate for this server is invalid when trying to access iTunes? I've never had an issue until this recently.

Hi i got the teacher student plan in october for 1 year but now appears as expired, can somebody help me please?

    Hi there,
Subscription was expired due to non payment for the month of March. I see the new card has been updated in the system and the subscription would be up & running in sometime.
Note: Since subscription was not charged for the month of March, once the subscription is activated you will be charged for the month of March also.

  • I have two iphones one is my wifes and one is mine when i have and update its asking for me to enter the apple id password for her email..... can someone please help me????

when i have an update my iphone 5s is asking for my wifes apple id password for her iphone5..... this is very frustrating because i cant update my apps....can someone help please?

Under whose Apple ID were the apps that you are referring to purchased? If they are displaying her Apple ID and asking for her password when you are trying to update them, then that means they were purchased under her ID. They will continue to do that unless you delete them and purchase them again under your own Apple ID.
    Cheers,

  • Reset password for a restored volume????? Please Help...

    Hi fellow mac addicts.
I had to back-up my HD and now I just restored it to an external Firewire HD.
When I went to boot from it by choosing it as the start-up disk, everything went well. But before it the finder came up, I was greeted with a user name and password dialog box. I tried everything I could remember to have it continue to load, but obviously I didn't have the right combination. I then booted from the system install disk to reset the password. The external HD was listed, but when I chose it, it ghosted the option to reset password.
I don't know what I can do from here in order to boot to my desktop.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated,
    Thank you in advance.
    Eddy

Eddy, I'm getting the picture. Your only available copy of your data is on your external drive, and you are using another (someone else's?) Mac. You want to boot from the external so it's "your system" even though a different computer. Right?
Would another account on the Mac work for you? You'd startup from the Mac internal drive, log in to your own account there, separate from the owner's account, and could access all your files.
If the only way to get yourself up and going is to boot from the expernal, here's what to do. Be careful, be sure you are booted from the external disk, be sure to follow the advice on naming the new account. Mistakes can cause data loss.
Startup with the option key and select the external drive. Immediately hold Apple-S until you get to a commmand prompt.
    type mount -uw /
to mount the external disk for use, then ls -la /Users to check that you are booted from the disk you think you are.
    type cd /var/db/netinfo
to go to the directory that holds the user database. You are going to delete the database, but instead of irrevocably killing it, let's rename it so you have an option to backtrack.
    Type mv local.nidb old.nidb
Then we'll force the setup assistant to run at the next boot.
    Type cd ../
    Type rm .AppleSetupDone
Note the filename has a period as the first character.
    Type shutdown -h now
Reboot with the option key; select the external drive. It'll boot into the setup assistant -- a little movie and song, then the setup process. Make a new account with a name that's NOT Eddy or Eddy <Anything>. Call it "Admin" for example.
Complete the setup process and wait for the desktop. I don't know where your backed up files are, but if they were in the Eddy account or at the root level of the disk, you should be able to access them.
If you have permissions problems or other trouble, let us know.

  • I changed my iTunes password on my device, but now I can't change it on iCloud

I had to change my apple id login and password on iTunes.  I was able to change it on iCloud on my iPhone 4S, but can not change it on my iPad.  My old login is on my iCloud on the iPad, but as I no longer remember my old password, the iPad won't even let me reset to factory setting.  Any idea what I can do?  It's frustrating have two devices that should work in together, not being able to communicate.

If the old ID is yours, and if your current ID was created by editing the details of this old ID (rather than being an entirely new ID), go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPad on your iPad, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iPad when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

  • Iphone 4s will not shut down.  Constant reboot unless powered.  I have done a full restore (losing half my apps) that helped for a while but now back to the same problem

My iphone 4s will not shut down?  Please help??

Basic troubleshooting steps outlined in the user guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new device.  Try each of these steps until your problem is solved. If these steps fail to solve your issue, then you'll need to bring your phone into Apple (or an authorized service provider in your area) for evaluation.

can anyone help as she dont know security questions and will be blocked thanks

    First try:
Can I change the answers to the security questions for my Apple ID?
Yes. You can change the answers to the security questions provided when you originally signed up for your Apple ID. Go to My Apple ID and click Manage your Apple ID. Sign in with your Apple ID name and password, go to the section Password and Security and click Reset your security information.
    next
Rescue email address and how to reset Apple ID security questions
    Last contact iTunes by:
    https://expresslane.apple.com/Issues.action
Click on "Account Management" and then on "Forgotten Security Questions". That will take you to a page where you can talk to iTunes Support right away, or you can schedule a call to talk to them. They should be able to get you squared away so that you can log on to the old Apple ID.
